Monty
Crumb catcher? He furrowed his brow, looking deeply into the mouth of his flask. His mustache! Maybe it was the alcohol but that warm feeling spread from his head down into his heart. "You got a way with words little miss. You don't have to thank me for nuthin. We're all still breathin." He gave the 'alliance' commander a quick look. "That's all that matters." He tilted his container in her direction offering a drink. "Shepherd." Monty nodded when he saw the older man with Mal's new guests...

CAVANAUGH
Richard didn't recognize the man who spoke. He, like Book, must have been part of the crew Cav had failed to meet the last time he'd met up with the Serenity's crew. He, like Malcolm and Zoe before his was clearly not a fan of the Alliance. That was fine. Either the man would judge him for himself or he'd continue to lump all former and current Alliance members into one generic pile of dislike or hatred. Either way, Cav wasn't going to be anyone other than who he was. He reached up to unbutton his uniform jacket.
"I'm not going to wander off looking for them," Cav answered. "Wouldn't want to interrupt anything." He took a chair across the table from Monty and watch as Wendy wrapped him around her little finger with practiced ease.

Book
The Shepherd stepped up to avoid as much of the unpleasantness as he could. "Cav this is Monty, a friend of the captain's. Seems we have taken a mite bit of a refugee on that account." As he finished that Book came to stop behind the large man, placing his hand comfortingly on his shoulder. The gesture conveying it was a sensitive issue. With his other hand he placed a moderate sized container down in front of everyone. As he removed the lid it revealed a supply of fresh fruit.

CAVANAUGH
Cav didn't extend his hand, figuring the man wouldn't accept it. "Monty," he said instead, acknowledging the man's name with a nod and not pressing any further into why the man was there. Truth be told, they all had their secrets.
He eyed the fresh fruit with interest. When he'd first met the crew, he'd used a basket of peaches as a combination ice breaker and thank you gift. There was just something about food that made everything easier. "I'll split one of those pears with anyone who's interested."

"You got a way with words little miss. You don't have to thank me for nuthin. We're all still breathin." "That's all that matters."
And a potentially tense confrontation avoided which also mattered much to her in her state. A drink would be helpful and she gladly took the container Monty offered, raising it in a salute of thanks for both the compliment and sharing of his drink before taking a deep drink. She only allowed herself one before handing the container back. It was tempting to drink herself into a pain- and mind-numbing stupor but she needed to keep her wits about her.
"Shepherd."
"I'm not going to wander off looking for them," "Wouldn't want to interrupt anything."
"Cav this is Monty, a friend of the captain's. Seems we have taken a mite bit of a refugee on that account."
Whatever she was about to say was forgotten as Book removed the lid of the container. A good, strong drink and now real, honest to goodness fresh fruit.
"I'll split one of those pears with anyone who's interested."
"I'll take you up on that, Cap," she said with a grin. God, she couldn't remember the last time she'd felt this at ease or found herself compelled to genuine smiles. She found herself distracted from the pain and the upcoming discussions and/or confrontations of her reason for being here. Right now, she found herself living in this moment.

A quick slice of the knife had the pear split in two. Another quick flick and the seeds were sitting in a neat pile on the table.
"Water them and watch them grow," he said, for some reason recalling part of a rhyme from his childhood. He briefly wondered who those seeds would feed, if they did get the chance to grow, before biting into the pear.
As the juice and flesh of the fruit filled his mouth, he let out a groan of pure enjoyment. He chuckled. "I think I understand why we aren't still in Eden."

Monty
"Cav this is Monty, a friend of the captain's. Seems we have taken a mite bit of a refugee on that account." The big man slumped back in his chair at the mention of his situation. He knew Book was just trying to keep everyone on the same page. But that was one he didn't want to be on right now. He had to admire the man's devotion at least, they all had to share this roof for the time being.
"I'll split one of those pears with anyone who's interested. Fir the Shepherds sake and the feelings of the lady he'd mind his manners. "I'll take you up on that, Cap," she said with a grin. Monty watched Cav slicing up the pear. Zoe liked to do that too but for different reasons, he suspected with a scowl on his face. Mind his manners yeah but he could be high brow in his jabs when he needed to be. "Try not to make too much of a gorram mess." Monty muttered gesturing to the seeds on the table as he got up and headed for the exit. Taking a swig from a bottle he withdrew from his duster the old browncoat slipped through the hatch to anywhere but there.

CAVANAUGH
Cav paused to watch Monty go. I wonder who pissed in his porridge? Probably me, given the fact that I'm wearing my uniform.
"Any place I can stash my jacket, Book?" he asked, shrugging off the jacket he hadn't work in what seemed like a hundred years. "I don't want to go waving any red flags in front of any bears."

**River enters from Inara's shuttle**
The door opened with a creaking noise. At first only five thin fingers were seen on it, until River lastly walked in. Voices. "I'll split one of those pears with anyone who's interested." "I'll take you up on that, Cap," Too many voices. "Water them and watch them grow," A biting noise. "I think I understand why we aren't still in Eden." "Try not to make too much of a gorram mess." Steps coming nearer the door. "Any place I can stash my jacket, Book?" Everything was going to explode in her head. Not only the voices. She was used to it. But something was different here. Something mentally. Something grabbing her mind. Making her going crazy. "I don't want to go waving any red flags in front of any bears." "No!", River suddenly shouted, holding her head in her hands. "Go away!"

CAVANAUGH
Cav froze. He'd had limited expose to Simon Tam's sister. She was, as far as he knew, a significant number of dots shy on her dice. It's never a good thing to provoke a lunatic.
"I'm afraid I can't go anywhere," he said calmly. "My ship is back on the planet and I'm stuck here until we get Wash and then head back."

Wendy didn't try and stop Monty from leaving. Things were a bit too tetchy as the men had just come face to face without forewarning. Though they had all just fought a battle on the same side against the Hands of Blue, it was the war that stuck with you. The emotional toll war brought on did not end when a war ended and for some, it never would.
Besides, she was preoccupied. Her attention had gone on alert as soon as she senses something... different. Another person on her same frequency. Someone open on more levels, higher levels, different levels than everyone else around. Someone like her. The fruit forgotten, Wendy stared at the new yet familiar face and out of habit and curiosity, looked deeper in an attempt to read her. It was her. The girl she'd heard whispered about at Blue Sun. One of the very few she'd heard them compare to her. Wendy was in no condition to be pushing herself but now that she was finally facing her, she couldn't help trying to determine how alike they were.
"No!", "Go away!"
"I'm afraid I can't go anywhere," "My ship is back on the planet and I'm stuck here until we get Wash and then head back."
Cav spoke calmly but Wendy felt herself go into a panic. She quickly pushed herself out of the chair and rushed over to River. "I'm sorry. I'm so sorry. I didn't mean to pry," she said as she pulled out the nearest chair and ushered River into it. The room was loud enough, not just the talking but the higher than normal emotional levels throughout the ship. Wendy knew exactly what River was going through. She'd gone through it plenty enough before she learned how to work with it.
"I know it's very loud on the ship right now. Everyone shouting all at once," she said, an odd statement as the room was currently quiet but high emotions could ring her head louder than any shouting and she figured it was the same for River. "It can be overwhelming." Wendy knelt in front of River and took her hands, squeezing them in comfort. "Want to know a trick I taught myself?" Wendy waited for River to give her some kind of indication that she was getting through to her and continued. "Pick just one out of the crowd and concentrate on that one. Concentrate on me. Let that concentration drown out the others." Wendy closed her eyes and pulled a happy memory into her mind, concentrating hard on it and letting the serenity of it calm and soothe her so that those feelings would pass on to River.
Wendy lay in the grass, side by side with her best friend. She was young, before she even knew Blue Sun existed. It was a lazy afternoon, just she and Pickett watching the clouds and pointing out shapes that formed as they moved across the sky, sharing dreams of one day joining them, going beyond them...

Book
Shepherd Book was going to try and say something, he liked to think he was developing a good rapport with River but when their new friend stepped forward to calm the young girl down it seemed to be doing the trick. "My, my... you certainly have a good intuition when it comes to sensitive matters..." With a disarming smile he stepped back and was about to take a seat when Zoe and Jayne came running through the compartment from the direction of the bridge.
"Better strap in", Zoe shouted over her shoulder as the whole ship rocked from one side to the other tossing the inhabitants around a bit. "Perhaps you would all like to join me over in the lounge?" Book indicated the seats in the corner of the room away from the dinning table. They had straps to keep them steady but the preacher waited to see how he could be the best host.

CAVANAUGH
Cav tried to keep his footing but failed as the ship rocked. "Who's flying this thing?" he asked, knowing it clearly wasn't Book, River, Zoe or Jane. That left Mal, Kaylee, Inarra or Simon Tam. God forbid, maybe it was Monty. He didn't know which one was the worst option.
He crawled the few yards to the lounge and grabbed one of the straps. Rather than pulling himself into the seat, he looked at Book. "You think maybe they need a seasoned pilot up there?"

"My, my... you certainly have a good intuition when it comes to sensitive matters..."
Wendy had hoped to save her story until the crew had gathered, or more preferably, just to Simon. She wasn't much for drudging up her past and sure as hell didn't want to be on the receiving end of pitying glances throughout the short remainder of time she had left. But with the look Book was giving her, it was clear he was extremely astute. Wendy opened her mouth to give a brief explanation of the exchange with River but was spared when the ship began to erratically toss.
"Better strap in",
"Perhaps you would all like to join me over in the lounge?"
Wendy looked to where Book motioned and nodded before returning her attention to calming River. It was strange, this immediate feeling of kinship she'd developed in only moments of River's company. After a lifetime of feeling alone, she was finally facing the proof that she wasn't. "We're two of a kind, you and I. We gotta look out for each other," Wendy said softly before grasping the table to keep her footing as she stood up and took hold of River's hands, boosting her out of the chair. She looped her arm around River's waist as they made their way to the lounge, stumbling and weaving with the tossing of the ship.
"Who's flying this thing?"
Wendy winced as her hip slammed into the corner of the counter. "Apparently, a deranged monkey," she said dryly as she and River finally managed to make it to the chairs. She released River into one of them and fell into one of her own, digging for the belt.
"You think maybe they need a seasoned pilot up there?"
Wendy looked between Book, Zoe, and Jayne awaiting their answer and perhaps an explanation of what in the sphincter of hell was going on now.

"I'm afraid I can't go anywhere,""My ship is back on the planet and I'm stuck here until we get Wash and then head back."
The ringing in her head didn't stop, and so she didn't react on the man's comment. His voice was sounding like an echo far far away anyway. But the other noises were coming closer instead. No! Enough! Suddenly someone rushed over to her, threw her into a sitting position.
"I'm sorry. I'm so sorry. I didn't mean to pry,"
"Uh...", River uttered, painfully holding her head.
"I know it's very loud on the ship right now. Everyone shouting all at once," "It can be overwhelming."
The woman in front of her took her hands. "Uh." Her head pulsated. Everything was so loud. Overwhelming. Yes, it was.
"Want to know a trick I taught myself?"
A trick to... For the first time River raised her gaze. She didn't give an answer, but instead slowly nodded her head, though even that seemed to overstrain her.
"Pick just one out of the crowd and concentrate on that one. Concentrate on me. Let that concentration drown out the others."
The sound of the woman's voice was so loud. Not the voice itself, but the noise behind. Like static. But River tried. She instinctively closed her eyes. Closed her ears. Tried to block out everything but the woman in front of her. And actual, it calmed her down. Her breath was getting back to normal. Her heart slowing down. Something in her mind brought a warm feeling to her and chased the shadows away. Green grass. White clouds.
"..."
River was so much concentrated on the woman in front now, that she even didn't heard the other's voices around for the time being. She also didn't heard the steps of someone entering the room.
"..."
The grass under her feet suddenly rocked. The clouds above seperated for a moment, until they formed to new figures.
"..."
"We're two of a kind, you and I. We gotta look out for each other,", the friend in the grass next to her said. Her voice was soft now. Calming. The friend took her hand and they walked along the meadow. The ground under their feet still was weaving a bit.
"..."
"Apparently, a deranged monkey,"
River giggled. A monkey, totally out of its mind, hopped over the grass, passing them. Then her friend stopped their walk. Did they reached their goal?
"...ed a seasoned pilot up there?"
A male voice. The meadow disappeared. The clouds melted into thin air... River was sitting in a chair, feeling the ground weaving underneath. Her breath was getting louder. Her heart getting faster again. A little bit of panic came back to her. But this time controllable. "I can do that.", River suddenly said. To fly a ship would be awesome. To see the stars outside, passing by. A childish smile was formed on River's lips.

CAVANAUGH
"I can do that."
Somebody had taught River to fly. Somebody had taken the loon with the missing screws and put her in the pilot's seat. It had to have been Wash. He was the only one with the skill and was likely the only one River could intimidate into doing such a ridiculous thing. In the face of such lunacy, there was only one thing Cavanaugh could do.
"Need a co-pilot?"

***Many minutes pass***
Before any decisions regarding the assistance of flying the ship could be made, the erratic flying had smoothed until finally, she felt the ship come to a smooth landing.
"Jayne, take the doc and meet that shuttle. If Wash isn't too needy get him up to the galley. The rest of you just sit tight. Family meeting in 10."
The steadiness and confidence in the voice over the comm did not denote an ounce of recent distress that would have accompanied complications resulting in the erratic flying. She looked up at the comm speaker through slit eyelids. "He did that on purpose, didn't he?"

Book
"He did that on purpose, didn't he?"
With a tilt of his head and a smirk he simply nodded. "Very probably." Zoe and the shepherd unhooked themselves and proceeded around the cabin to make sure everyone was in one piece. The preacher stopped at Wendy and looked her over with a checked concern. He didn't want to make a scene as she seemed to be holding her feelings close. But he had noticed her wince of few times and it didn't seem to be a physical distraction so much as... "Are you alright my dear? The captain does have a way of making people feel right at home."

"Very probably."
The amused smirk that accompanied the answer gave her a sense of ease. If the crew could find amusement in the Captain's shenanigans, hell, the fact he even pulled shenanigans, made her believe that perhaps the Captain wasn't as menacing or unapproachable as reported. Or perhaps he simply was just a deranged monkey.
Wendy was all for shenanigans but bumping around in a ship did not help her throbbing head. She winced as the tempo of the throbbing picked up speed and closed her eyes as she concentrated on calming, meditative breathing while clearing her mind of emotions and feelings of those around her penetrating through her weakened barriers.
"Are you alright my dear? The captain does have a way of making people feel right at home."
Her concentration fully dedicated to what she was doing, she did not sense that she was being observed and had been approached. She opened her eyes and looked up at the Shepherd, drudging up a smile of reassurance as she answered truthfully while simultaneously withholding the truth. "As well as can be expected, Shepherd. I appreciate your concern."
The Captain entered and Wendy made quick work of releasing the restraints and standing at attention in show of respect. She watched him take stock of the room and people within, still irked over the unnecessary erratic flying. 'Deranged monkey!' she mentally shouted at him as she kept her expression unreadable.

CAVANAUGH
Cav nodded to the captain, happy that he hadn't had to sit second seat with the loon. She was cute, to be sure, which might have been part of the reason the Serenity crew adopted her, like some puppy that was just a little short of sense. Having a doctor for a brother certainly helped.
Of all the women on the ship, Cav put River on the bottom of his list. Certainly Inara was at the top of the list be he knew she was out of his league. Kaylee was next but she was firmly attached to Simon Tam and who could blame her? He was a doctor and not a bad looking one either. Given the choice between Wendy and River, Cav would take sanity every time.
Of course Wendy was in serious trouble and if Simon couldn't help her, River would be moving up one on his list and that wasn't something Cav really wanted to think about.
"So what happens at a family meeting?" Cav asked, wondering if he and Wendy would be asked to take a short walk while the crew met.

*Enters from Mission shuttle*
"People, beautiful wonderful people!" Wash smirked and walked into the room, "Mal! You actually managed to scoop me up. Are you telling me you can fly this ship? Sir, i request time off." He smirked and turned to Zoe, "Wife, sweet wife!" Grinning he walked over and wrapped his arms around her.

"Need a co-pilot?"
River's smile widened. She really is allowed to do that? Just as she opened her mouth to respond, the Captain's voice over the comm interrupted her.
"Jayne, take the doc and meet that shuttle. If Wash isn't too needy get him up to the galley. The rest of you just sit tight. Family meeting in 10."
So, no other pilot needed anymore? River's face went sad like a child, who doesn't get the chocolate bar at the checkstand in the supermarket. While the others kept a conversation and the Captain and Wash entered the area, River started to gnaw her nails, her gaze turned to the ground. Too many people in here. Too many voices. But she couldn't leave through the door, as the way leading to it was crowded either. River's face went visible nervous again.

"Jayne, take the doc and meet that shuttle. If Wash isn't too needy get him up to the galley. The rest of you just sit tight. Family meeting in 10."
Phew, that was right on cue. For a moment Jayne thought the others seriously would allow this mental case to lay hand on the ship.
"So what happens at a family meeting?"
Before Jayne was going to do what he was told, he turned around to Cavanaugh. "That's why it's called family meeting." These guys were kinda too nosy, so someone has to tell them. If Mal allowed them to stay on the ship, fine. But doesn't mean they belong to the crew. Shouldering Vera he walked in the door's direction, turning around to Wash before leaving to find the doc. "You heard the Captain. You've got time for this later, boy.", he said with a dirty smirk, alluding to Zoe.

CAVANAUGH
Had the words come from anyone other than Jayne, Cav might have taken them at full value. As they stood, the big tough muscle was trying to flex whatever authority he had, despite the fact that on the Serenity he had next to none.
"I'm sure Mal would rather know where I was, rather than me just wandering the ship," he replied. "Once he gets here, I'll wander off to the cargo hold with the rest of the strays."

Monty **Monty, Kaylee, and Inara enter from Infirmary/Inara's Shuttle**
It hadn't been long before the older man had once again come across Serenity's young mechanic as she was trying to navigate her way to the upper levels. Monty had been getting a little sentimental with his flask as he had not had a real moment to morn his crew. But he had snapped out of it quick enough to lend a hand and as they reached the top of the catwalks Inara had joined them from her shuttle.
He watched her close enough to see she was still taking great care but seemed to be largely in control. It wouldn't need to be like back in the alley on New Melbourne. So here they where as the three came into the galley. Mal seemed to be letting things run amok, had something happened to his old friend back there? The captain seemed a bit shell shocked Monty thought as he pulled out two chairs for the ladies and settled back in the shadows to wait for what happened next.
Mal
As soon as he had entered the room there was an awful lot of chatter mucking up his thoughts so as he took stock of his surroundings he went into that zone of his and blocked it all out. He was still thinking about Inara. She had intended on leaving and now that just didn't seem possible. Someone was after them again and they were all fair game.
"I'm sure Mal would rather know where I was, rather than me just wandering the ship."
That was his cue. "And you would be right," Mal said with all the authority he could muster to silence the room. "Whatever happened back there it involves us all. You both included." The captain nodded to their new female companion as she had stood at attention. Some kind of military background perhaps? He would find out. "I hate to break it to you but that was no small effort and you might be wishing you had not crossed our path before this is over... So what's your story Captain, and Miss...?" Reynolds crossed his arms as he waiting for one or the other to take the lead.

Though the talking had silenced, the room was still loud. Wendy was having trouble keeping the filter on but once the Captain addressed her and Cavanaugh, the unspoken noise seemed to silence considerably as they waited in curiosity.
"Carter. Wendy will do." She shifted uncomfortably at having the attention of the room. "I don't suppose we could discuss this in private?" She waited a beat, reading the answer as well as seeing it on his face. "Didn't think so." Her eyes shifted to where Cobb had disappeared to retrieve the person she was here to see. She kept her answer simple and to the point. "I'm here to see Simon. I need his help."

Inara had been thankful for Monty's fortuitous timing when he'd happened upon her on the way to galley. Her world had still been tilting and she had been dreading the possibility of faltering in her steps in front of the crew. They had enough to worry about without fussing over her. She'd be fine and besides, she didn't want to risk missing the family meeting should Mal have felt the need to order her back to her quarters. Not that he had any jurisdiction over her. Her eyes shifted to him, wondering again if he'd been in her cabin or if she'd imagined it but pushed that aside as the family meeting had begun.
At the mention of Simon, Inara reached out and squeezed Kaylee's hand in reassurance. She did not believe this Wendy woman's intent to search out the Tams was in the same vain as the others had been. Upon closer scrutiny, Wendy appeared to be in pain but hiding it well. She looked worn down. Not from a lack of sleep but something... more severe. She suddenly realized this request for Simon's help was personal.
"Perhaps it would be best we grant her request of privacy," Inara said as she gripped the arms of the chair to help steady herself as she began to rise.

"I'm sure Mal would rather know where I was, rather than me just wandering the ship,""Once he gets here, I'll wander off to the cargo hold with the rest of the strays."
What a smartass! Jayne let out a quite grunting sound instead of an answer, as the room filled up with even more people, including the Captain. "And you would be right,", Mal fell in their little conversation, whereupon everyone seem to keep silent, at least for the moment. "Whatever happened back there it involves us all. You both included." Then he applied to the new woman on board, asking her questions about the meanings of her presence on board their ship.
"Perhaps it would be best we grant her request of privacy,", Inara suddenly interrupted them.
Jayne couldn't resist to let out a dirty laughter. "Dude, being a doctor seems to make the chicks go crazy.", he said with a short look at Kaylee.

River still was gnawing her nails, her gaze turned to the ground. Don't hear at the voices. Concentrate on something else. But on what? There was nothing in this room, but voices. Another time the door opened. Open and shut. Shut and open. The room was already full. The air was running out. River started to cough. A laughter sounded through the room. Coming from everywhere. The cough was getting worse. She had to leave. River's hand stretched out, but she couldn't catch the door. Instead he caught something else...

Mal
Captain Cavanaugh didn't seem too keen on doing the talking or perhaps he was being noble? Mal didn't care, but his new friend Wendy seemed in a bit of a rush to talk to the doctor. But why? It had been a while since the ex alliance officer had crossed paths and he didn't know how 'ex' that might be anymore. Those men hadn't been alliance back there so it would explain the assistance. This Tam business always managed to bring the worse out in people. "Dude, being a doctor seems to make the chicks go crazy." Jayne never failed to bring a conversation into the gutter. "Jayne... Go be in your bunk."
"Perhaps it would be best we grant her request of privacy," Inara cut in. Mal hadn't even seen her come in but there was another country heard from. "And what exactly am I supposed to do, let them take the doctor for a little drive too? We still don't know what this business is all about and there are no secrets here. Well, there is but not usually with strangers. Except what I think is necessary... Important thing is my ship, my rules." The companion had a peculiar look on her face and the Captain didn't like it. She seemed to know... things. Reynolds turned his expression on the newcomers once more. "If your need is genuine and harmless, I would go a might bit towards trusting you if you give me something to go on. 'n if you have anything geared towards melting anyone's brain you might want to turn that over now too."
