INARA
Inara was relieved that the bounty hunter, Jubal Early, was no longer aboard Serenity. She had only heard bits and pieces of the hurt and emotional chaos he had wrought during his short time aboard the ship and she was worried about Kaylee's emotional state. All she knew so far was that he'd had Kaylee tied up in the engine room and had made threats to do things to her. What, she did not know, but when Kaylee was ready to talk about it, Inara would be there for her.
She entered the infirmary looking for Simon, hoping to have her split lip, compliments of the bounty hunter, taken care of.

RIVER
In the cockpit where Mal, Zoe, Jayne, Wash and RIver were collected to recap on the strange events of that day, all attention was on River. River was loving it. For the first time since she had boarded the ship, she was receiving praise, not suspicion or hatred. She beamed. Maybe they would let her stay for sure. After answering lots of curious questions from the crew, (and mostly with sneaky cryptic answers), she strutted from the cockpit to go check on Simon and his leg before going to bed.

INARA
Inara turned as she heard someone enter the infirmary.
"River, hello," she said with a smile. "I was just looking for your brother."
Inara looked the slight girl over. There was so much more to her than anybody was aware of and even with the schooling of reading people, Inara sometimes had trouble reading River. Like right now, for example. She couldn't tell how tonight's events had effected her.
"If you need someone to talk to, my door is open," she said quietly to River.
Inara stood patiently waiting for Zoe to finish taking out the bullet out of Simon's leg.

Wash
Wash stood by in the infirmary as he watched Zoe take the bullet out of Simon's legs, mopping her brow and watched her work. Reaching over he mopped her brow as she pulled the fragments out piece by piece. Wash couldn't help but wonder tho, how that bounty hunter found them way out here? Was he following them for a while, was he attached to the ship? He just couldn't wrap his head around it, "I'm going to make sure we're on course." He smiled and put the sponge down.
Wash smiled at Inara and River as he passed, "Excuse me ladies, i need to check our course."

((OOC: Can't a guy get a minute to pass out? )) SIMON In one night, their peaceful albeit fugitive existence had been shattered. True, they had come close to being captured on Ariel but the captain had managed a daring escape. And then the bounty hunter had found them, in the corner of No and Where. Would they ever feel safe again? Even though his sister loved this ship, could he honestly say that his and River's continued stay didn't put the lives of the other crew members in danger? Early was right about one thing, though; he knew how much pain a bullet actually caused to its victim now. After Zoe had removed the shell from his leg, he had talked her through stitching up the wound and bandaging it. And as soon as he dealt with the others' injuries, he would prescribe himself a generous dose of painkillers. "Inara," he greeted the companion as she appeared in the doorway. "I'm sorry about..." Simon weakly pointed toward his lip, Inara displaying the effect of being pistol-whipped by Early. Unfortunately he couldn't move from the chair to help her himself. "There's a first aid kit in that top drawer with alcohol swabs and bandages." Soon after, River appeared, reluctant as usual to enter the med lab. "It's okay, mei-mei. Everyone's fine," he assured her.

INARA
"Thank you, but you do not owe me any apologies, Simon. It was not your fault."
The smile of reassurance she'd added caused her to wince and she quickly turned away, walking toward the drawer he'd indicated, hoping the wince hasn't been caught. She did not want him feeling any more guilty than he apparently did. It was her decision to use her companion training to try and distract the bounty hunter to buy as many precious minutes as she could for the rest of the crew and she knew the chances of it being successful were slim. Every fiber of his being had indicated to her that he was dangerously unstable. She knew the risk she was taking and was thankful that she'd only gotten a split lip out of it.
"Is there anything I can get you?" She asked Simon as she took out the first aid kit and removed a couple of alcohol swabs from the pack.

RIVER
River slid into the infirmary with a smirk on her face. The glow of victory still draped her lithe form. A ton of brick had lifted after her staged admittance of feeling unwanted. It was all true.. it had to be to be believable. Early wasnt a fool.
"Hi Simon, I'd like to resign as your defenseless younger sister" she snarked.

SIMON
"I gladly accept your resignation," he replied. suppressing a smile. There were times when she could just be his annoying little sister again. The one that insisted on pulling him away from his studies to talk of warring dinosaurs. He winced as shifting his weight on the chair prompted a fresh wave of pain. "But then you'll have to find some other occupation on the ship," he added. "As I recall, your cooking leaves much to be desired."
"Is there anything I can get you?"
He turned his attention back to Inara. "No, I'm good. I just...could you tell Kaylee that...?" Simon could never find the right words to tell Kaylee, self-proclaimed genius or not. Remembering the threats that Early had made against her brought a knot to his stomach. "Just make sure she's okay," he finally said, knowing that Inara would know all that request encompassed.

INARA
Inara placed a hand on his shoulder. "Of course I will," she said with an understanding smile.
She glanced around the infirmary. It was a little crowded and she wanted to give Simon and River some privacy. Plus she could use a mirror in order to tend to her lip.
"Would you mind if I took these with me?" she asked, gesturing to the alcohol and swabs she'd taken out.

INARA
"Of course it can," she agreed. "Thank you."
Simon's wounds were the worst; at least the physical wounds. She would wait patiently for Kaylee to be ready to talk about what she'd been through but if she didn't show up in the next 24 hours, Inara would go to her.

SIMON
"River, he was a dangerous, unstable man," he replied. "I wasn't going to let him take you anywhere. We've been through too much..." He stopped himself from a lecture that he didn't have the patience nor desire to deliver. "You love this ship. This is...home, for lack of a better term. No one is going to force you to leave it until you're ready to do so," he stated. "Besides, you can't leave me here alone with these crazy people."

RIVER
She hated and liked whenever Simon took charge of her life. His brave act of risking his life for her had come like a double edged sword. She felt safe but sheltered, cared for but useless. At least he'd openly admitted he appreciated her company... but what if her current state of vulnerability was the only thing their relationship was currently based on? She suddenly wished she wasn't such a brat when she was younger before the whole Academy incident.
"I'm sorry about your leg. 'though it seems he missed hitting the femoral artery or major tendons. Getting hit in the muscle is a good place, really (smirk). Also...a long time ago... I was the one who told your date Jennifer that you had a severe allergic reactions to fur coats, dust mites and bleached hair. I'm sorry"

A smile passed across his face after taking a moment to retrieve the memory. "Well, I think the statute of limitations has probably passed on that crime," he said. "Not that I didn't make my own significant contributions to dates ending very badly."
He leaned his head back against the chair and let his eyes close for a moment. "And yes, I suppose if I had to get shot anywhere, somewhere other than the femoral artery is good as any. At least my room is on this level. Not sure I'll be taking the stairs anytime soon."

Kaylee had avoided the meeting in the cockpit after everything had settled down, not wanting to be in the center of any attention because of what had happened. She knew in the least the Mal and Inara would be looking to check on her and she wasn't quite ready to talk about it. So she wondered for a bit while everyone talked, getting her head back on straight and trying to talk away the lingering fear that still gripped her. When she heard the sounds of the crew walking around again, she made her way towards the Infirmary to check on Simon, preferring to check on him than be checked on herself.
She heard the sound of Simon and River talking and rapped lightly on the door fram to the infirmary before poking her head in. "Hope I'm not interruptin' nothing. Just wanted to see how the patient is doin'." She walked in, hovering hesitantly just inside the door.

"Hope I'm not interruptin' nothing. Just wanted to see how the patient is doin'."
"Kaylee...hi," was all Simon could muster as the mechanic's bright smile cut slightly through the haze of pain. "Remind me not to tangle with space bugs. They have a serious bite."
He once again shifted his weight and dealt with the resultant wave of pain. "Have you spoken to the captain?" he asked.

Having been shot before, Kaylee recognized the pain Simon was in. She wished there was more she could do to help him, like he'd helped her when she was the one on the table. "I'd say you're farin' mighty well, considering the circumstances," she said, by way of comfort.
"Have you spoken to the captain?"
Shaking her head, she walked farther into the room, coming up beside the table. "Not yet. I know he means well but he's one for questions and I ain't really up for any just yet," she admitted.

"I'm sure he's just concerned about you, as we all are," he added, with the more general pronoun to take attention off himself. "And he's probably trying to figure out how that bounty hunter found us so far out in the black. I mean, if we're not safe here...."

MAL
Mal leaned against the window to the infirmary but didn't see what transpired within, listened but was unable to hear. His head was abuzz with something worse than what his injuries could deal... questions. Those the others must be asking themselves, he thought briefly. How had Early managed to get the drop on them... who was really after River... and what would they send next? Having no answers plagued the Captain to such maddening depths that he had to suppress these thoughts and return to the moment. Here and now. His gaze drifted in the direction Inara had taken when she departed, where it lingered for some moments.
"Have you spoken to the captain?"
He looked back into the bay just long enough to see Kaylee and Simon conversing in seemingly good spirits and turned to leave the Common Area.

INARA
As she approached the infirmary, Inara could see that Simon had drifted off and that Kaylee had left. Inara quietly returned the items she'd borrowed from Simon, stopping on her way out to look down at the doctor. He'd given up everything for his sister. His extravagant life, his friends, even his mother and father. He was a good man. Definitely good enough for her mei-mei and Inara would ask him to look out for Kaylee once she left the ship.
Her breath hitched at the realization of just how much she'd be leaving behind and Inara pushed the thought away again as she left Simon to sleep.

**Enters from Cargo Bay**
The white was staring at her. Silencing. Observing. But was not so bad as the blue was. It was just white. Like the North Pole. River was shivering. What must it be like to live at the North Pole? Aside from being cold. Cold and white. White and bright. Bright and… A sudden noise outside. River hold her breath. Listening. "Simon?", she asked from inside the white. Standing still. Waiting.

Mal
**Enters from Hand's of Blue's Ship**
"Simon?"
"No, its just little old me - if you don't mind." The captain finished as he squeezed by River. He moved into the room and gently deposited Kaylee on the bed against the wall. "Doc, wakey wakey. Got some folk who need tending too now you got your beauty rest." The Shepard followed Mal in shortly after with Inara and he didn't waist a second scooting to the other side of the room to clear her a spot. As Book set the companion down Reynolds couldn't help the concern that took hold of his emotions and he feared, his expression.
His feet remained rooted but after a few moments without a response the captain turned to Simon. "Paging Doctor Tam." Mal glanced around only to see that Simon was nowhere to be found. He didn't know when the doctor had managed to sneak out but the Captains head was starting to hurt... And his temper starting to rise.

Simon
Silently he followed his sister down the corridor until he reached the infirmary. His heart was beating incredibly fast in his chest while he was expecting the mercenaries or blue hands just behind every single corner. Suddenly he realized the sound of quickly approaching steps and hide behind some metal shore. His fingers were sweaty and for a short moment he was even holding his breath. He didn't have a weapon with him but even in case he would have one he wasn't sure if it was really helpful. Deep in his mind he knew that he would do everything what was necessary to protect River, but in reality only one look to his continouosly shivering hands made him realize that this would be harder than it might sound. As his view turned back to the corridor he just saw Mal entering the infirmary and from one second to the other he calm down. Quickly he was following him to the place he passed most of his time in this ship, depending on Mal's trigger-happy adventures. Following a hidden instinct he enfolded River in his arms. "Listen to me. Don't do that again, ok? These guys have been here. It was dangerous to be here all on your own." It took some time to realize that not only Mal was in this room but also the Shepard and Kaylee. His heart skipped a beat. Was she alright? "What happened?" He didn't even waited for any explanation but hurried to her bed.

"No, its just little old me - if you don't mind."
River turned around, as Malcolm passed her to deposit an unconscious looking girl. Light brown hair. Like caramel chocolate. What would she give for caramel chocolate now... Suddenly something enfolded her in someone's arms. River deeply breathed in. She knew the soft scent.
"Listen to me. Don't do that again, ok? These guys have been here. It was dangerous to be here all on your own."
Instead of reacting on the words, she just looked up on her brother's face. "Don't wrinkle your forehead, Simon, that makes you looking old." She tightened the grip, before her brother turned to face the others.
"Paging Doctor Tam."
"What happened?", Simon almost fell in Malcolm's words and hurried to Kaylee without waiting any explanation. River stood still. Let her arms sliding down. Watching the others.

Mal
When he was sure the newly arrived doctor was getting down to business he spared his attention from Inara long enough to address the young girl standing in the doorway. "Despite what your brother says, you had a part to play in that madness..." River was a bit leaky in the brainpan, but she was his kind of crazy. And the captain gave credit where credit was due. "You did a damn fine job back there." Mal said making sure to lower his voice so that last comment remained between the two of them.

Inara felt Mal's gaze which is what kept her from looking his direction. She didn't want to chance catching a glimpse of what lay behind the carefully constructed walls of stubborn, steely resolve they had both constructed. It was moments like these that those feelings unwillingly escaped through the cracks of that wall and with each passing day aboard Serenity, she felt its foundation grow weaker as the cracks multiplied.
"What happened?"
Nobody answered because nobody knew exactly what had happened. Inara had been the only one there and even in her case, she had been drugged and going in and out of consciousness. "I think she may have a concussion," Inara offered. "The man who attempted to take me... I think he hit her." She placed her fingers to her temples trying to drudge up any other recollection. "I'm sorry," she said, dropping her hands. "I was barely conscious."

"The man who attempted to take me... I think he hit her." "I'm sorry," "I was barely conscious."
"We were at the antique shop lookin' for...uh, some pretties." Kaylee quickly covered with a sidelong glance at the doctor currently checking her vitals. No need for Simon to know what it was they were doing. "I turned into an aisle, wantin' to show Inara something but some big guy had her over his shoulder. Must a knocked me out 'cause I don't remember much 'til Monty and Inara found me... 'cept my head hurtin' something awful." Something was nagging at the back of her mind. What was it?
She inhaled sharply as Simon's hand grazed her bruised cheek. It was startin' to hurt more now the action died down some.
"Think it had something to do with those creepy guys in the blue gloves?"

"Despite what your brother says, you had a part to play in that madness..."
River's eyes raised up, as he heard Malcolm's voice right beside her.
"You did a damn fine job back there."
A childish smile appeared on her lips, just like one of those when parents praise their child. She was never used to get praise. Simon and her, both of them weren't.
"Think it had something to do with those creepy guys in the blue gloves?", she suddenly heard someone saying.
"Two by two...", she started to whisper quietly. "... hands of blue... Two by two..." Her look was lowering at her naked feet. She hated shoes. Shoes were done to cage feet. So she didn't wear them most of the time. Only if Simon told her she had to, when they were outside the ship.
