Simon (temp-played by DarkSideCookie)
"Alright,""I'm here because I need Dr. Tam's help."For a moment Simon stopped doing what he just did and turned around slowly instead. His help? How could she even know he was onboard this ship? He knew too good how dangerous that information was, above all for River. "I've tried to have these duplicated,", Wendy continued, as Simon stepped closer again, having a look at the pills in her open hand. "but so far, none of the other doctors had success. They're not just any ol' pills you can find on the market. They're unique, created in a special unit of one of Blue Sun's labs specifically for my... condition."Wordless Simon reached out for the pills, before he suddenly stopped in his move, raising his head slowly to look at her wondering.

Jayne listened to what the woman had to say, but as she reached for her bag to dig something out from it, his hand suddenly flipped in her direction to grab her hand. "What's that?", he asked shortly before she revealed it. Jayne calmed down again and leaned back into his chair.
"Hey, before anyone here diplicates any kind of party drug for ya, you'll tell us more about that... condition.", he lastly objected, before the doctor could have said something different, though he earned a look from Simon, which was saying the same like a nod of his head would have.

"What's that?"
Wendy only broke attention with Simon to give Jayne a reassuring 'relax, everything's fine' look as she'd retrieved her pills.
"Hey, before anyone here diplicates any kind of party drug for ya, you'll tell us more about that... condition."
Wendy glanced at Jayne and then Simon. "Alright." She carefully returned the pills to the container and spoke in a casual, detached manner. "I assume you're well aware of what they did to your sister the two years she was with them?" she asked Simon rhetorically. Wendy hated talking about her past so she kept it short and clinical sounding. "I've been in the custody of Blue Sun since I was eight." She let their imaginations fill in what she went through all those years. "When I was 17, a procedure went wrong. I was in a coma, damn near died. Blue Sun developed these pills to counteract the effects. They keep me alive which, in turn, kept me dependent on Blue Sun."
She looked down at the bottle, the pills making a little ticking sound as she turned it in her hands. "I was just months away from being able to legally walk away. Rather convenient timing, wouldn't you say?" she added humorlessly as she held the pills out to Simon once more.

Simon was torn between the finely cultivated secrecy that he and his sister had to maintain in order to stay alive, and the curiosity about what this woman knew if he agreed to help her. The circumstances of her 'condition' as she had called it might hold the long-hidden answers to improving River's condition. And though he might not agree with Jayne's methods, he and the rest of the crew would need to know how they found him and River. Especially in the wake of the bounty hunter's ambush and whatever had happened in the cargo bay.
"Look, I know what the Alliance is capable of, and I think it is cruel to keep anyone...women, children, dependent on their kindness," he began. "But you know the Alliance has the best scientists, the best labs. Trying to recreate custom pharmaceuticals..." he trailed off, shaking his head. Hours of trial and error had only resulted in meds that could keep River stable, or something like it. And it was doubtful there was another Ariel to plunder.
"Resources are rather limited out here. I'm not saying I won't try," he added hastily, out of consideration for whatever bond this woman had established with his sister. "But I'll need more information."

Wendy relaxed with relief. Most men in Simon's situation would have probably turned her away outright simply for her connection, forced or voluntary, to the people who had done horrible things to his sister.
Wendy managed a small smile of reassurance. "Try is all I ask. I'm not one to hang my hopes on miracles." It was obvious that she had accepted the worst.
She reached for her bag again but paused to look at Jayne. "May I?" she said dryly, going ahead without waiting for an answer. Wendy pulled a small black leather case from her bag. "I liberated this from their ship," she began as she unzipped the case and removed the tablet. "They keep it with them. I've never known exactly what was on these but they'd have them out when conducting studies. It's not connected to any other source. Believe me, I've tried hacking into them from other Blue Sun devices." She handed it to Simon. "It's got at least one biometric security feature to get passed. A finger print." Apparently the creepy bastards took the blue gloves off on occasion, she thought. "We won't know if there are further securities beyond that until we unlock the first one."
A thought occurred to Wendy and she turned to Jayne, slight concern on her face. "Please tell me we still have at least one of the bodies on board," she said, assuming both Hands of Blue were dead.

Jayne was looking to and fro between the woman and the doctor. It was like they were completely ignoring him. He was sent out to get informations from that broad and now she has went into a smalltalk with that Simon guy? What they thought him to be? An Idiot?
"May I?", he was suddenly asked from the side.
"Do as you like.", he mumbled, starting to feel needless here. The woman anyway has already turned to the doctor again, before, after her explanation about what she had tote around in her bag, she called on Jayne.
"Please tell me we still have at least one of the bodies on board,"
"Wanna scour the airlock for some meat scraps?", Jayne asked with a nasty laugh. He didn't know what Mal had done with the other Hand Of Blue, but doubted he was still laying on the ship's floor.

Simon intently looked at the tablet as Wendy explained what it was, the answers it might contain. He had no doubt that Kaylee could navigate its labyrinthine systems. Just another machine that talked to her. For a moment, he was relieved to have something to focus on. The beginnings of a plan.
"Sorry, did you say...bodies?" he finally stammered. It was all the reply he could muster, having only heard the commotion in the cargo bay and not knowing the details. They'd had a close call on Ariel; he never imagined these deadly agents of the Alliance had been on the ship. In their de facto home.

"Wanna scour the airlock for some meat scraps?"
Wendy frowned at Jayne, trying to determine if he was joking without mentally intruding.
"Sorry, did you say...bodies?"
Wendy heard the distress in Simon's voice. She turned to him, sympathy in her eyes over what she knew River and Simon had gone through. Wendy reached out and squeezed his hand as she spoke with calm resolve, hoping to turn his thoughts away from the threat that had been to the final resolution. "Those blue-gloved kuh wu ching soh ba wong won't ever bother your sister again."
She turned her head back to Jayne, the back-and-forth movement sending a stab of pain through her increasingly pounding head. It caught her off guard, causing her to flinch before she could stop herself. Wendy leaned forward and closed her eyes, her hair curtaining her face which alleviated her from needing to concentrate on schooling her features. She splayed her fingertips over her brow and temples, pressing gently.
Logically, it made sense to wait until there was a less populated place to send bodies through the airlock. Wendy wasn't sure if Jayne was just being an ass or if Serenity had already come across a good dumping ground en route to drop Cavanaugh back off at his ship.
"Are the bodies really gone?" she asked Jayne with all seriousness.

"Sorry, did you say...bodies?"
Jayne quit laughing and looked over at Simon. Really? This made a doctor getting weak in the knees? An amused grin still was playing around his lips, before he got thrown back into the role of the watcher.
As Wendy was about to draw her attention back to Jayne, she suddenly seemed to weaken again, before she recollected and addressed him with another question. A redundant one in his opinion.
"Are the bodies really gone?"
"Babe", he began with a lewd grin. "What part of airlock and meat scraps didn't ya understand?"

'Babe?'
Wendy pushed back her hair to give Jayne a glare. She sighed in frustration as she leaned back again, still putting pressure on her temples. "Remind me to punch him when I'm feeling better," Wendy said as an aside to Simon before addressing both men.
"We need to talk to the captain about going back for one of the bodies or that treasure trove of information is useless," she said with a gesture toward the tablet.

"Babe", he began with a lewd grin. "What part of airlock and meat scraps didn't ya understand?"
"Remind me to punch him when I'm feeling better,"
Simon let a slight laugh escape him as once again the ship's PR manager attempted to win friends and influence people. And though he was relieved by Wendy's assertion that the Alliance agents were no longer a threat, that might also mean whatever work she had put into gathering information would be wasted. Not to mention that her pain and weakness seemed to be increasing.
"We need to talk to the captain about going back for one of the bodies or that treasure trove of information is useless,"
"The captain doesn't exactly listen to my advice," Simon replied, with a knowing glance at Jayne. "But he doesn't like uninvited guests on his ship, either. He'll want to know how the Alliance found us. In the meantime, I'll do what I can to alleviate the side effects of your...condition." He moved quickly to one of the cabinets, pulling out a syringe and a small glass bottle of clear liquid. "I've had some success with River in impairing the amygdala function. It will lessen the nerve inflammation without cognitive impairment."

Accustomed to a life of medical procedures and experimenting, Wendy simply nodded and rolled up her sleeve, positioning her arm exactly as required without question. She continued on casually with their conversation.
"Blue Sun doesn't exactly report to the Alliance. They do well enough convincing the Alliance they're in control and they give the Alliance enough to keep them out of Blue Sun's business," she explained. "The Alliance wants your sister eliminated. Blue Sun has other plans, so you can rest easy, Doc," she reassured. "The Alliance doesn't know you and your sister are here."

"The Alliance wants your sister eliminated. Blue Sun has other plans, so you can rest easy, Doc. The Alliance doesn't know you and your sister are here."
"Well, I suppose that affords us a small measure of comfort," he said as he prepared the solution. He placed a pneumatic injector against her arm, hearing a slight hiss as he pulled the trigger. "This should help with the headaches. You can rest here a while if you like," he offered, even though he anticipated the answer. She clearly wanted to speak with Mal, and frankly Simon was curious about what she had to say as well. Although putting some space between her and Jayne might be a wise move at the moment.

Jayne didn't care about her glare. In truth he was used to such glares at that kind of comments. Instead a goofy grin lay on his face, looking like he would have made a really good remark.
"Remind me to punch him when I'm feeling better," Jayne didn't care about that either. To say again that he was used to it, might have been a little exaggerated though. Most of the time women ignored him, with the exception of some lucky days he finds one (or on very lucky days two at a time) that is pathetic like him.
"We need to talk to the captain about going back for one of the bodies or that treasure trove of information is useless,"
Was she listening to what he says at all?! Jayne shook his head in the background, while their conversation went on.
"The captain doesn't exactly listen to my advice,""But he doesn't like uninvited guests on his ship, either. He'll want to know how the Alliance found us. In the meantime, I'll do what I can to alleviate the side effects of your...condition.""I've had some success with River in impairing the amygdala function. It will lessen the nerve inflammation without cognitive impairment."
Whatsoever..., Jayne thought with another shake of his head. He really hoped the Captain would make the right decision as for an other uninvited guest. One crazy psycho on this ship was enough.
"Blue Sun doesn't exactly report to the Alliance. They do well enough convincing the Alliance they're in control and they give the Alliance enough to keep them out of Blue Sun's business,""The Alliance wants your sister eliminated. Blue Sun has other plans, so you can rest easy, Doc,""The Alliance doesn't know you and your sister are here."
"Well, I suppose that affords us a small measure of comfort," Simon went on doing some medical stuff on her, while they talked. "This should help with the headaches. You can rest here a while if you like,"
"Better not make yourself at home too much.", Jayne suddenly intervened in Wendy's direction and with one disparaging glare at the doctor. "In the end the Captain's word is rule."

"Well, I suppose that affords us a small measure of comfort," "This should help with the headaches. You can rest here a while if you like,"
She took a moment to close her eyes and lay back, letting the solution run through her system. The pounding of her head did ease a bit, making the pain more manageable and the ability to think straight easier. "Thanks, Doc," she said after a sigh of relief.
"Better not make yourself at home too much.", "In the end the Captain's word is rule."
"You're an ass," Wendy said casually. She opened her eyes a slit to look at Jayne and blamed her statement on, "The meds," in a matter-of-fact tone with a gesture to the spot the Doc had given her the shot. She gave a knowing look to Simon and closed her eyes again, the hint of a smile playing on her lips.
Gorrammit, she wanted to surrender to exhaustion but she had a feeling Jayne would be of no help. She'd have to drag her exhausted, worn out self back up those stairs and face a meeting real soon-like, before they got too far from the body drop and before someone else came across it.

"You're an ass...The meds."
Simon took advantage of Wendy's eyes staying open just long enough to remove a pen light from his pocket and shine it into her pupils. "Normally, I would chalk that accurate assessment up to your advanced perception," he remarked, clicking the light off and placing it back, "but most people come to the same conclusion within a few hours."
He stayed nearby to offer assistance if she needed it. "Mal will likely want everyone to gather in the kitchen. Are you sure you're okay to go upstairs?" he asked.

"You're an ass," Jayne just showed an unimpressed grin. "The meds,", she added quickly, before getting back in a lying position.
"Normally, I would chalk that accurate assessment up to your advanced perception,""but most people come to the same conclusion within a few hours."
Jayne's grin disappeared and for a moment he looked like he would have to think about what Simon just had said, when suddenly the penny dropped. But just as he wanted to give backtalk, the doctor spoke again.
"Mal will likely want everyone to gather in the kitchen. Are you sure you're okay to go upstairs?"
"I'm finish here.", at last Jayne piped up, annoyance in his eyes. "You take the crazy chicks along." He couldn't resist on another dirty grin as for his remark, before he turned and walked outside.

Jayne had interjected and made his exit before Wendy had had a chance to answer the doctor. Wendy bit her tongue and let him have the last insult in an effort to avoid prolonging his charming presence. With Jayne's departure, she dropped her head back against the upraised bed and closed her eyes, groaning in protest at not being able to slip into the deep sleep her body and mind longed for.
"Yah, good to go." She savored a few precious seconds of peace before sitting back up.
Wendy put one leg then the other over the side of the bed, carefully maneuvered herself to a sitting position before pushing herself to her feet as smoothly as she could. The less jostling, the better.
Something Jayne had said made her wonder what awaited her upstairs. A little strategizing couldn't hurt. She knew Reynolds was fiercely loyal to his crew but to what point? Would how she'd helped earlier count for nothing in the face of such loyalty? Would any further attempt to help and the offer of giving them all the information she had be dismissed?
Wendy glanced toward the direction Jayne had disappeared. "What do you think, Doc? Should I pack my bags and bring 'em with me?" she asked wryly.

"What do you think, Doc? Should I pack my bags and bring 'em with me?"
Simon's hands were at the ready to catch the woman if she faltered. "Well, Captain Reynolds can at times be a less than cordial host," he remarked, remembering the conflict and bloodshed that followed hard upon his first setting foot on the Firefly-class transport ship. "But he appreciates anyone willing to earn their keep. Sounds like you did that and more today."
He met her gaze with a reassuring smile. "He's also quite fond of confounding the Alliance and if what you say is true, the information on that tablet would be a sizable thorn in their paw," he asserted, adding, "If River trusts you, so do I."

Wendy gave a satisfied nod and felt her tension ease a slight bit.
"He's also quite fond of confounding the Alliance and if what you say is true, the information on that tablet would be a sizable thorn in their paw," "If River trusts you, so do I."
Wendy smiled warmly at Simon. "You're an even better brother than doctor, which is saying a lot," she said, giving his arm a squeeze before looping her arm through his, both companionably and to keep her footing steady.
Wendy had felt an immediate bond with River and the rush of warmth and love she'd felt through River toward her brother gave her a sort of sisterly affection toward him. With the state the Hands of Blue had left River in, it was most likely she had trouble articulating her feelings and emotions, let alone separating them from the flood of feelings and emotions belonging to others around her. "She loves you fiercely, you know," she began as they headed for the kitchen. "You are the 'verse to her."

Simon smiled and nodded, as Wendy placed her arm in the crook of his elbow and they moved slowly toward the door. "Well, that may be true," he began, "but my mei-mei can still be a real brat sometimes." His leg still ached from the bullet wound, so neither of them were prepared to sprint up the stairs. He knew of his own sacrifices for his sister, wondering if this unstable and often dangerous life in the black was worth it. It was nice to have his belief validated.
"When I think about what would have happened if I had stayed on Osiris, cozy and comfortable in a sterile, highly efficient and well-managed environment..." he mused with a wistful sigh. "I really miss the food at those charity galas. Jayne cooks about as well as he converses."

***Wendy enters from Bridge***
Teeth still tightly clenched in anger and frustration, Wendy grabbed her bottle of pills from the infirmary then slammed it down on the table in the common area as she fell into a seated position on the couch in front of it.
She sat back with her arms crossed, glaring at the bottle as if it were the people who had caused her need for them. She was tired of hurting. It was damn near impossible to sleep. Wendy had been dealing with it and putting off taking another pill as long as possible. She was already dangerously walking the line but it was Jayne's heartless words, words that were all too true and that she'd been ignoring in her own mind, that were convincing her to just screw it all and take a pill. Why prolong the inevitable and live out her remaining days in excruciating pain?
Wendy got up, taking angry strides to the infirmary to fill a glass with water, then angry strides back. Before she could talk herself out of it, she shook the few pills into her hands, contemplating taking the half or really screw it all and take a whole one. She leveled herself enough to go for the half and quickly downed it and half a glass of water then laid down on the couch with a sound of frustrated annoyance at Blue Sun, the Alliance, Jayne, her entire situation, and herself.
After a few minutes, her breathing calmed as did the pounding in her head. She was amazed at how fast it was working, let alone the fact it had been only half a pill. Maybe it was because she hadn't taken one in so long? She didn't question it, only embraced this moment of peace and let herself slip into sleep.

Simon withdrew another vial of blood from Wendy's arm, trying to be as gentle as possible with the needle. He then handed her a bandage to place over the puncture. So far, all her bloodwork had been normal. Exceptional, even. And he was glad that she had been able to get some sleep that night.
"I must say you're taking this all remarkably well," he commented. "Strange ship full of strange people, planning to infiltrate and possibly abduct a high-profile Alliance scientist. Guess this is just another Tuesday for you."
"Hey guys, we got a distress call coming in."
Simon looked up as Wash's voice filled the room. "Sounds like that could be a change of plans," he sighed, curious as to who else could be out here needing assistance. "Just another Tuesday for us, too."

Wendy was pressing the bandage into place, thinking of how best to tactfully explain how she was able to be taking this all so well. Her thoughts were interrupted.
"Hey guys, we got a distress call coming in."
Wendy had looked up in unison toward the direction of the disembodied announcement.
"Sounds like that could be a change of plans," "Just another Tuesday for us, too."
Wendy sat up, swinging one leg over the table. "I should..." she broke off and stopped her motion of getting off the table at Simon's disapproving doctory look. "...uh, not go and see what I can do to help 'cause they've got this?" she finished as if answering the unspoken question in the look of a disapproving parental figure when you were caught doing something wrong. Wendy pulled her leg back up on the table and attempted to relax while he continued his doctoring.
With a heavy sigh, Wendy let her head fall back and stared ahead, her thoughts going back to Simon's previous comment.
'Just another Tuesday,' she thought. In the general sense of a mission, maybe, but she'd never been face-to-face with her own demise with barely any confidence that she'd make it through. "'Strange' isn't a word that comes to mind in regards to this ship and crew. I can't recall ever being in a safer place surrounded by a better group of people. Y'all are like a family--or at least what I'd imagine a family might be like." An awkwardness crept over her, feeling as if she'd just unintentionally delved too deeply into emotional scars. "Then there's Jayne..." she added.
Wendy buried those scars back deep inside and pushed on in a more matter-of-fact tone. "There's no point in dwelling on unfamiliar surroundings and people or what could go wrong when your clock's about to run out. My problems are short-term," she said, managing a quirk of a smile in Simon's direction despite the grim comment. Wendy faced forward again, resuming her staring at the wall. "I'm more concerned about causing any long-term problems for you guys if things go sideways."

Relieved that Wendy had taken the hint to remain in the Infirmary, Simon pulled up a chair and sat beside her as she continued to talk. About the crew and the feeling of being safe. He wanted that for her as much as he wanted it for River. They deserved that after all they had been through.
"I'm more concerned about causing any long-term problems for you guys if things go sideways."
"Well, I don't know if you'll find this comforting," he began with a hint of smile, "but the captain has a fair amount of experience with things going sideways. Somehow it always works out for us. And you're right, this crew is the closest thing I have to family. I gave up everything to save my sister, but I'd do it again. Those of us on this ship, we have each other's backs, in good times and bad. There's trust and loyalty and respect...and then there's Jayne," he said, repeating her words.
"So my official prognosis is that you're about as stable as I can make you, given my limited resources. How many of your pills do you have left?" he inquired.

Wendy couldn't hold back a chuckle at Simon's own interjection of 'and then there's Jayne'. Though pain in the ass he may be, there had to be something good about having him around, otherwise she was sure Mal would have chucked his ass out the airlock long ago.
"So my official prognosis is that you're about as stable as I can make you, given my limited resources. How many of your pills do you have left?"
"Two," she said solemnly. "I took the half-pill before going to sleep." Wendy took a moment to analyze how she felt. "I'm only feeling a little off and there's a dull ache in my head still but other than that, it feels as if it helped nearly as much as a whole pill normally does." Was this a one-off? Could she prolong it further by cutting back to half a pill whenever she felt she was beginning to toe the line or would she be increasing her odds of another seizure with the risk of spending her remaining days in a coma? Wendy shook her head in confusion, the action sending a twinge of pain through her head. She lowered her head and pinched the bridge of her nose, giving a sigh of annoyance. It was frustrating, not knowing anything about something that had control over you. "I just don't understand it."

River heard Wash's voice over the ship, her interest peaked but she already knew what was going to happen. Instead, she made her way towards Simon and Wendy and popped her head in. Staring at them both with a smile but it faded and her hand went up to her temple and rubbed. She could feel the pain coming from Wendy, unable to ignore the headache she was now feeling. "Owie, tap dancing mice- running." She rubbed at her temples harder before bringing her finger up to her eyes. "Tippy tap, tippy tap-"
