"I took the half-pill before going to sleep. I'm only feeling a little off and there's a dull ache in my head still but other than that, it feels as if it helped nearly as much as a whole pill normally does. I just don't understand it."
"Well, soon enough we'll be able to talk to someone who does," Simon offered. He could sense her frustration, not just with the physical symptoms of her condition but with the uncertainty of not being in complete control of her own mind. He'd seen it often enough in River to recognize it. Even felt it a few times himself.
"Owie, tap dancing mice- running. Tippy tap, tippy tap-"
River's words caused him to notice her in the doorway, as she mirrored the same pained gestures as Wendy. The strong bond between them seemed to have positive and negative effects. Much as he wanted to know more, he didn't want to cause River further pain. "It's alright, mei-mei. Miss Carter will be feeling better soon," he assured, hoping he was right. "The distress call -- does the captain know where it's coming from?"

"Well, soon enough we'll be able to talk to someone who does,"
Wendy felt a bit of tension leave her over that reminder and raised her head once again to find River standing in the doorway rubbing at her temples.
"Owie, tap dancing mice- running. Tippy tap, tippy tap-"
A pang of sorrow overcame Wendy's features. "I'm so sorry, baobei. Come here and take my hand." Wendy held out her hand with a smile of encouragement. She should be avoiding straining herself but it was breaking her heart to know that her pain was causing River pain. It was completely unfair for River to suffer because of her so Wendy was more than happy to pay a small price to take River back to the clouds and flowers.
"It's alright, mei-mei. Miss Carter will be feeling better soon," "The distress call -- does the captain know where it's coming from?"
Wendy's eyes went passed Simon through the doorway to the empty staircase. "I have a feeling Miss Serra is on her way down to fill us in."
Inara had finally reached the lower portion of the stairs viewable from their vantagepoint just after Wendy had finished announcing her approach. Trying to reduce her strain as well as setting her concentration on easing River, it was hard to block out others, especially those who emitted such strong emotions. The Companion's inner turmoil was particularly heightened at the moment and had hit Wendy before Inara had even begun to descend the staircase.

***Inara enters from Bridge***
"I have a feeling Miss Serra is on her way down to fill us in."
Her graceful footfalls as she descended were quiet and she had not yet gotten into view. Inara could hear Wendy's words drifting up from the Infirmary. She paused and her brows lifted in surprise but she was quick to remember that their visitor had a gift outside of the normal senses that gave her the ability to know when someone was approaching.
"Indeed I am," she said with a warm smile as she floated down the last few steps. "And please, call me Inara." Inara stopped in the doorway, her hands gracefully folded in front of her as she gave the occupants of the room equal attention while filling them in. "The distress call came from Captain Madison Haley of the Shadowheart. We were able to communicate with her briefly and Wash has set course for their ship." Inara quickly went over the details of the ship's technical problems and their estimated arrival time. "It turns out Madison, the captain of the ship, is an old friend of mine from the Companion House. I know her and trust her but Mal thinks like a captain, preferring to always remain on the leery side." There wasn't any ridicule in her statement, only fact and understanding for how any good captain would handle all situations. Her attention now went to Simon. "There is a woman on board their ship who is in need of medical attention but we did not divulge that we had a doctor on board. Whether you wish to remain here or accompany us on board their ship is entirely up to you."

"The distress call came from Captain Madison Haley of the Shadowheart. We were able to communicate with her briefly and Wash has set course for their ship...Whether you wish to remain here or accompany us on board their ship is entirely up to you."
Simon listened intently as Inara shared the details of the distress call. It was somewhat comforting that the Companion could vouch for its source, but he was in agreement with the Captain on playing things safe until they knew the real situation. "Of course, I'll do whatever I can to help," Simon agreed. "You'll take care of River while I'm gone?" He made the request of Wendy even though he felt sure she would agree. The newcomer had already demonstrated her commitment to his sister's safety and as he had already said, he trusted her.
He placed a bag on the counter and began to stock it with basic first aid supplies and medications, making his best guess as to what they would encounter. He slung the bag over his shoulder and headed for the door. "We'll be back as soon as we can. Behave, mei-mei," he cautioned, semi-seriously. Wendy was already under a great deal of stress and didn't need River's antics to make things worse. Simon slid past Inara and headed for the stairs leading up to the bridge.

*Mal, Madison, and Crew enter from Shadowheart Escape Pod*
Mal and the crew enters in just a few minutes after Simon, Sally, and the tall intimidating man Jebediah. Not that he couldn't take care of himself if things went south but things were good- for now. He really hoped they stayed that way, Mal stood outside the Infirmary door and waited. He didn't want to get in the way, he wanted to give Sally the best chance.
"Doc will do what needs to be done," Mal noticed the concern on Madison's face as she watched from the window. He could see that she truly cared about the other.

It had been a long time since Madison was on a Firefly class ship, it brought back memories. Though right now she didn't have time to reminisce on them. She was too worried about Sally to let her mind wander to anything else. "Doc will do what needs to be done," She looked at the man and nodded her head, he seemed sure of this young man's skills- she would hold the same hope.
"I have my reservations but that's the cynic in me. Usually, bad things come in three's but for us, it just keeps coming. Sally attracts bad attention, she doesn't know when to stop and that leads us into situations like these. Yet, I can not pull myself away from her or our protector. Jeb saved us more times then I can count, they are everything to me- Captain Reynolds. Just as your crew is everything to you, I swear we mean you no harm." Madison sat down on the couch, trying her best to relax and focus on her breathing. Nothing left to do but wait and hope for the best...

Simon tried to run through his mental checklist as he rushed around the infirmary. Once Sally was laid comfortably on the table, he started to set up an IV. Since he was unaware of the woman's blood type, he obtained a package of Type-O Negative from the freezer and hooked it onto the stand. The next order of business was inserting the needle into a vein so that she could receive the fluids. He then grabbed a cooling blanket from one of the cabinets and laid it across her chest to help with her temperature.
The second priority was the leg wound. He grabbed a pair of scissors and held them out to the woman's shipmate. "I need you to cut the fabric away from that wound," he instructed Jebediah, "and be careful not to open it further." He began gathering the sterilizing alcohol, gauze, needle and thread that he would need for stitching.

All Sally could feel was her being moved around, she knew the arms she was in were that of Jeb. His warmth, his strength, and his familiar smell calmed her and she settled against him as they moved. Then all of that was gone and she was laying down on something, a mix of voices and face's she could not distinguish between.
The fever made it hard for her to focus, She couldn't feel the IV in her arm- as her whole body was on fire. "Wh-" Words were hard to form and she couldn't move. Her body felt limp, dead weight, she couldn't do anything but lay there as a couple blobs hovered above her. "Mads? Jeb?" She was scared, she didn't know what was happening, did the Alliance have her? Were they going to hurt her...again? She tried to move again, to get away but she was so weak. "No, s-s-sop." Memories of the war, of her laying in that ditch started to take over and she was in full panic.

"Mads? Jeb? ... No, s-s-stop."
Simon muttered a curse under his breath as it looked as though his patient was regaining consciousness. He had hoped she could have slept through all this unpleasantness, but now it looked like he would need some assistance. "You're okay, ma'am," he assured her, realizing in all his haste he hadn't caught her name. "My name is Dr. Simon Tam, and your crew got you here just in time. I'm going to help you, but that wound on your leg is going to need stitches. I can give you something for the pain, but I can't take the risk of using anesthetic. Not when your blood pressure is so low. Are you okay with that?"
He held his breath, waiting for her answer and knowing that it was a lot to process. Also aware of her shipmates who were likely alternating between concern for Sally and distrust of him.

Jeb followed the Doctors instructions taking care not make her wound any worse.

"I have my reservations but that's the cynic in me. Usually, bad things come in three's but for us, it just keeps coming. There was something in this woman's eyes, something that made him believe her words and he dropped his standoff nature- most of the way. He sat down next to her and relaxed a bit, wanting to reassure her that Sally was in good hands. but he was Mal and that didn't come easily to him, especially to a stranger but she knew Sally and that was close enough.
"Truth be told I wasn't sure if I could trust the call, wouldn't be the first time I ended up on the barrel end. But Inara said she knew you, said you could be trusted, so here we are."
"Sally attracts bad attention, she doesn't know when to stop and that leads us into situations like these. Yet, I can not pull myself away from her or our protector. "My crew can be trusted," He wanted to say 'but Jayne' but decided against it. This woman didn't need any more worrying at the moment. "Kaylee will have your boat up and runnin',"
"It's going to take a bit of work," Kaylee appeared from the top of the stairs and sighed. "the damage it sever but I'll get her afloat again, Miss Captain." Kaylee smiled, "Just be needing a few parts from my stash and time."
"Get to work,"
"Aye Aye, Captain's." And off Kaylee went.
Mal heard the commotion in the next room, getting up to peer in.

"Truth be told I wasn't sure if I could trust the call, wouldn't be the first time I ended up on the barrel end. But Inara said she knew you, said you could be trusted, so here we are." Madison smirked, nodding her head at the Captain.
"I don't blame you, I'm grateful that Inara is on board- otherwise you might have passed us by." Madison needed to see Inara but first she needed to make sure that Sally was okay. She knew Jeb would not leave her side, which eased her mind a great deal.
"My crew can be trusted,"
"I've heard good things about you and your number one, Zoe, that is her name?" Mal nodded, "You both did good work during the war, people tell stories of Serenity Valley- I know things..." and she had said to much, because Mal was quick to change the subject. She would drop the talk of Serenity, knowing it was a sore subject to him.
"Kaylee will have your boat up and runnin',"
"It's going to take a bit of work, the damage it sever but I'll get her afloat again, Miss Captain. Just be needing a few parts from my stash and time."
"Keeping this ship in the air is a marvel in itself. I'm sure my ship is in capable hands, Miss Kaylee. Try not to change to much, Sal gets a bit anal about her set up down there."
"Get to work,"
"Aye Aye, Captain's."
When she heard Sally call out, she was on her feet instantly. She made her way past Mal and over to Sally, taking her hand and giving it a squeeze. "I'm here, baobei," Madison kissed her hand before leaning in and pressing her lips to her forehead. Cupping her face, she looked right into Sally's glazed eyes. Waiting for her eyes to focus, "baobei, you are safe here. We're here, these people are going to help you." Her voice was light, calm, using her companion training she sent her a sense of calm in the tone of her voice and the light touch she was taught. "You are not in that ditch, Sal, you are on a ship. Calm," She could see Sally calm down and slowly she settled, Madison looked up at Simon. "She's ready for you now, Doctor Tam." Madison straightened back up and Steps aside, placing a comforting hand on Jeb's arm. "She'll be fine now, stay with her, Qīn ài de." She leaned up and kissed him before walking back out and gathering herself. It was so hard to see Sal like that, it was almost too much at times.
Translation: baobei = Sweetheart Qīn ài de = Darling/Beloved or Dear.

So the patient's name was Miss Whitewater, and she was apparently adept at bar-brawling, Simon gathered. Or maybe not so adept, given that severe laceration. He kept his distance and observed as the other captain spoke to her shipmate.
"She's ready for you now, Doctor Tam."
Simon nodded in gratitude, as it did seem that Sally's heartrate and breathing had slowed and stabilized. Bedside manner seemed to also be part of companion training. "I'm going to use a local anesthetic on your leg so that I can stitch up the wound," he explained, placing a pneumatic syringe against her skin and hearing it hiss as he pulled the trigger. As it worked, he went about cleaning and sterilizing to prepare the area.

"Yeah I'm here Miss Whitewater. The Captain trusts these people and I'm not going anywhere. The Doctor here is gonna fix you up good as new so you'll be bar brawlin' in no time." Sally heard him but she couldn't focus her hand reaching out for someone, anyone. The soft delicate hand was in hers before she knew it, Madison.
"I'm here, baobei," Sally had never been more grateful for Madison's training. She felt her panic subside as she listened to her words. "You are not in that ditch, Sal, you are on a ship. Calm," Sally couldn't hold back the few tears that shed, falling down the sides of her face. The vision of Madison's calm face was enough to even her breathing, she felt Madison wiped them away before she moved away.
"I'm going to use a local anesthetic on your leg so that I can stitch up the wound," She had nothing against this doctor but she hated doctors so much. Him touching her leg, it only made her angry but it was misplaced and she knew that.
"Okay." Was all she could manage before she squeezed her eyes shut.

"Okay."
It was all Sally could squeeze out before forcing her eyes shut. Jeb knew she wasn't fond of Doctors but not to this extent, he had never really asked her why as it wasn't his business but seeing someone he was close to going through this tore him up inside.
Jeb placed his hand on Sally's shoulder giving her a reassuring squeeze as he watched the Doctor carefully go about doing his thing.

Simon methodically traced the needle and thread along the open wound, working as quickly but as smoothly as he could. "So...is your crew in the habit of inciting bar fights, suffering major injuries, and getting stranded in the black with little hope of rescue?" he asked Jebediah. "Because we do that pretty often. Ask the Captain, practice makes perfect." He added a knowing smirk as he finished stitching and cut the end of the thread. He then applied a bandage over the leg wound to help it heal.
"You should be feeling much better in a few hours, Miss Whitewater," Simon pronounced. "Once your fluids are back within normal range, I'll put you on a strong antibiotic to stave off any infection. Can I trust you to lay here and rest until then? Or does your shipmate have to hold you down?"

"I'm here, baobei," Mal wasn't one for gawking but he stayed close to listen in. Sal had always been "different" growing up, many had a lot of things to say about her. That never mattered to Mal and he didn't care much for others who treated others poorly. Mal had once been devout but he could never bring himself to harm others, not until the war- that is when everything changed. His attention napped back to Madison's words, "You are not in that ditch, Sal, you are on a ship. Calm," Mal knew all to well the terror of war, he had his own set of nightmares.
Mal watched the interaction between the three, something more was going on but once again- none of his business. So, instead he waited until Madison walked out of the room and found her seat. He decided to leave her to her thoughts, she didn't seem like she wanted company.
Mal disappeared for a few minutes, making his way to the kitchen. He grabbed a large cup and filled with with water and brought it back for Madison. "Here."

Madison was close enough to hear the conversation inside the room. The doctor's comment made her smile, they did have a knack for getting themselves into trouble. Sal was a big factor in that but- Madison couldn't place all the blame on her. As the captain she could say no to bar visits but they made Sal happy and she could not deny her.
"Here." Madison looked up to see a cup being extended.
"Thank you," She took hold and brought it to her lips, "So, tell me about your crew. They are certainly an eclectic bunch," She took another sip and smiled.

Can I trust you to lay here and rest until then? Or does your shipmate have to hold you down?" Sally blinked a few times, clearing her vision and a smile broke out on her face.
"Wouldn't be the first time," Sally smirked, "but since I got myself two good lookin' boys to keep me company. I don't see why I can sit a spell, got myself a couple o' studs to stare at." She caught a glimpse of Madison, who was glaring at her but playfully. "I'm teasin'," Sally still had healing to do but with Simon's help she would get back on track. "it's my way," Sally winked at Simon before closing her eyes.

Wash had been very curious about their new friends, especially since the exchange over the wave. He knew that Zoe would come and fill him in once things had calmed down and he was right. Zoe sat down on his lap and Wash wrapped his arms around her and filled him in on everything. Seems like they reached them just in time and that made Wash feel better.
Wash had basically parked the ship, leaving Serenity to move at the lowest speed. He guessed they were not ready to carry out any plans with strangers on board. With that, he decided to introduce himself to the crew of the Shadowheart.
"Glad to see everyone is good," Wash headed for Madison, since she was the first he saw. "Hoban Washburne, but everyone calls me Wash." He extended his hand.

At the end of the day they belonged to each other and that is what counted.
Madison was still getting a feel for the people around her. Captain Reynolds didn't seem like the sharing type and it was confirmed by his next statement. "Not much for conversatin' but my crew loves to hear the sound of their own gums flap."

***Inara enters from Inara's Shuttle***
Inara gracefully descended the steps, one hand lightly floating down the rail, the other holding the skirt of her dress up so the hem floated just above her ankles. As she took the last two steps, she looked around, taking note that most of the crew had made their way here. The two non-crew in the infirmary with Simon were Madison's crew but not Madison. Inara smiled and gave a friendly nod to those who looked her way then she set her sight to the common area, finding Madison there.
A warmth came into her smile. "Madison," she said, beckoning her friend to stand for an embrace by reaching her hands out as she approached. "You are looking well."

"As are you, you have aged into a beautiful woman- Mei-Mei." She took Inara into a hug, she was glad to have another friend among strangers. "This was the last place I expected to find you but I'm so glad I did. You saved my life and the lives of my crew," They had so much catching up to do but for now this was enough. "Later, we can share our adventures but for now I just wish to gaze at you."

Jeb sighed as Sally was already back to herself, didn't take too long after all though part of him figured she was being brave in the face of the big bad doctor. He could hear the Captain talking to Mr. Reynolds and a few others though he didn't pay their conversations much heed. Instead he took his hand off Sally's shoulder and approached the Doctor with his hand out in a gesture of gratitude.
"Thank you Doctor..., Sorry I didn't manage to catch your name."

Satisfied that his patient was awake and alert and joking with her crew, Simon figured Sally was out of the woods and well on the way to recovery. However he would stay close by and monitor her condition for any changes. He peeled off his gloves to discard them and began tidying up his supplies.
"Thank you Doctor..., Sorry I didn't manage to catch your name."
"Oh, uh, Simon. Simon Tam," he replied, shaking the man's offered hand. There was a hesitance to say his real name, he was still a fugitive after all, but he somehow doubted this crew were ready to run to the Alliance with that information. "She should be fine. It was lucky we found you. And while I've been patching her up, Kaylee's been working on your ship. She'll have her flying again in no time. Kaylee is...well, she's very good with fixing broken things." Simon made no effort to hide the affection in his voice or his expression; the optimistic mechanic was the brightest thing he'd found out in the black.

"As are you, you have aged into a beautiful woman- Mei-Mei."
Inara's smile warmed and she accepted the compliment with well practiced grace. "Thank you. High praise, indeed, coming from one of Madrassa's prized pupils. You were still fondly spoken of well after your departure."
"This was the last place I expected to find you but I'm so glad I did. You saved my life and the lives of my crew,"
Inara gave Madison's hands an affectionate squeeze. What may have happened had Serenity not been in the right place at the right time was a thought she did not wish dwell on. "All credit goes to the crew and captain," she said with genuine modesty. "It is only by happy coincidence that it happens to be the same ship I call home."
"Later, we can share our adventures but for now I just wish to gaze at you."
A smile lit up Inara's features once again as she held their joined hands outward to allow each of them an unobstructed study of the other. "So many years have passed but you remain just as beautiful and radiant. The path you chose agrees with you." A reminder of said path and the current situation, Inara's features changed to concern as she cast a glance toward the infirmary. "How is your injured crew member?"
