***Inara enters from Infirmary and Common Area***
INARA
She knew that this was where Kaylee would be. The sound of the engine seemed to soothe the young mechanic and whenever Kaylee was in need of comfort or calming and did not seek it from her, Inara would often times find her here working on the engine or laying in her hammock.
Inara knocked on the door frame of the hatch. "May I come in?" she asked, a pleasant smile masking her concern.

Kaylee laid in her hammock, lettin' the bright colors of the stripes surround her. She'd been hopin' that the gentle, familiar humming of Serenity's engine would help clear her mind some but the last few hours still weighed heavy there. Even pickin' up her tools and fiddlin' hadn't helped none. More than once she thought about goin' to talk to Inara- Kaylee was never one to hide her feelings much and Inara was always the one she'd likely to spill to- but somehow this was different. But then, there she was.
"May I come in?"
Kaylee looked up to see the companion standing in the open hatch, smiling despite the bandage over her lip.
"Early do that?" she asked after nodding her reply.

INARA
"It's only a little cut. It'll heal in no time," she said with a graceful dismissive wave. The last thing she wanted was for Kaylee to take on even the slightest of burdens when the emotional and mental wounds inflicted on her by Early were far worse and would take much longer to heal. She walked to the hammock, and sat with an easy grace, careful not to jostle or overturn it. Not an easy task to accomplish with a hammock but a life of lessons on grace and poise made it fairly easy for her.
"How are you holding up, Mei-mei?" she asked as she took hold of one of Kaylee's hands, giving it a gentle squeeze that conveyed her genuine concern.

Kaylee shifted to allow more room for Inara on the hammock. While she still wasn't in much of a talkin' mood, Inara's presence did make her feel a mite brighter. And as her momma always told her, it always did a heap of good to get the hurt out. Didn't make it easier though.
"Been better...Been worse I guess too." she replied with a shrug, pickin' at the woven linen beneath her with her free hand. It took a few moments before she added, "I guess you heard about everything, huh?"

INARA
"It's a small ship," she said, a hint of a smile flitting across her lips before returning to serious. "We're strong. You, this crew. Even this ship, thanks in large part to you," she said looking around fondly. "We've made it through a lot of difficult situations because of the strength of this crew." She paused. "And perhaps a little bit of sheer dumb luck."
"I'm pretty sure we could get through anything together." We... Together... The fact that she would soon no longer be included as part of the 'we' tugged at her heart as she looked at Kaylee but she didn't let her expression betray her. She took advantage of the space Kaylee had made and laid down on the hammock next to her, leaving a leg hanging over to gently swing the hammock. Inara was settled in for a long visit with Kaylee whether Kaylee felt like talking or not. Just being in each other's presence was a comfort.

Kaylee settled back into her side of the hammock, letting her head dip onto Inara's shoulder. It was familiar, Inara being the closest thing in the 'verse that Kaylee had to a big sister. A smile fought its way through at memories of hours spent talkin' about boys or girly things or just layin' in each others' company if they ran outta things to say. Like they was now except that now there was so much to say and she just didn't know how. Inara wouldn't push her to talk. She never did. But for as much as she didn't show it, Kaylee knew that the companion was worryin' and it weren't right to leave it like that.
"I couldn't sleep so I was workin' on Serenity a bit. He snuck up on me. Said he was gonna..." She couldn't say the word. It was terrifying and humiliating and it just wouldn't come out.
"Said he would if I tried to stop him. That there weren't no one to help me. Then he...tied me up. Asked where River's bunk was. And I was so scared...I told him." That was the worst of it. How quick she gave River up to that man. "Then he just left. Like it weren't nothin'."

INARA
Inara kept her eyes on a fixed point of the ceiling as she gently kept the hammock swinging, careful to school her features and reign in her anger. Kaylee needed strength and stability at this fragile moment and anger was a sign of weakness and emotions in chaos. She could hear the guilt in Kaylee's confession.
"You didn't do anything wrong, mei-mei," she said soothingly. "The man was a monster and he was on a mission. If you hadn't told him what he wanted to know, he would have hurt you and then moved on to hurt someone else on the crew until he got what he wanted. You did the right thing and just look at how brave you were to have followed River's instructions despite his threats. We couldn't have defeated him without you."

"S'pose so." Kaylee mumbled, heaviness pulling at her eyelids. Try as she might to fight it, the night was finally catching up with her body. Along with sleep would likely come nightmares, her mind still being far from eased. But it could have been worse. They were still flyin' at least. Everyone was still in one piece, more or less. Early hadn't broke 'em. Inara was right, they had been in tighter spots than this and come through. This weren't no different. At last, she let herself sleep.

INARA
Inara remained quiet as she felt Kaylee relax into sleep. Inara felt more at ease now that she knew Kaylee would be okay and with that ease came the exhaustion. She was about to ease her way out of the hammock to return to her shuttle but then it struck her that she might not have many more moments like this with her mei-mei. Resting her cheek against the top of Kaylee's head, she closed her eyes and let the humming of the engine lull her to sleep.

Mal
**Malcolm enters from direction of the Corridor (Fore Passage)**
Before the captain even reached the hatch he called out, "Kaylee! Jayne's settling in for a siege in the kitchen, thought maybe you would..." he stopped himself as he crossed the threshold. Suspended in the hammock at his side were Kaylee and Inara... It wasn't terribly unusual to discover them like this but Mal still found himself a bit unprepared. Dismissing the urge to jump back out into the hall he just gently cleared his throat.

INARA
Inara groaned in protest at being woken from a deep slumber. Half asleep and refusing to open her eyes just yet, an often used lecture automatically came tumbling out. "Mal, what have I told you about barging into my shuttle?" she mumbled sleepily.

Mal
Mal couldn't keep the smirk off his face at that. How could he forget her words? Manly and impulsive... But he also knew just what her response would be if he threw them back at her. "Think your a might bit adlepatted if this is what you've done with the place darlin." the captain said as his smirk spread. He was glad her eyes were still closed.

Kaylee blinked a couple times, letting her bleary eyes adjust. A gentle sounding hum told her she musta fell asleep in the engine room...She snuggled closer to the warm object beside her that she guessed was Inara, not yet ready to leave the coziness of the hammock.
"Think your a might bit adlepatted if this is what you've done with the place darlin."
"Heya Cap'n." she murmured with a sleepy smile.

INARA
"Think your a might bit adlepatted if this is what you've done with the place darlin."
Darlin'. In her unguarded state, a smile touched her lips but as the fog of sleep lifted, she found herself wide awake as reality set in.
"Heya Cap'n."
Immensely thankful for Kaylee's timing, Inara seized the opportunity to avoid any possibility of a discussion that may lead to her leaving. "Kaylee, Bao Bei, I believe the captain needs you. Shall I make us some tea?"

Mal
"Heya Cap'n."
Despite his personal feelings he was glad to see Inara and Kaylee had passed the night away, keeping each others dreams in check he was sure. They needed that. Mal spared one last thought to the bounty hunter and hoped his had not passed as peacefully after what he'd done to them.
"Kaylee, Bao Bei, I believe the captain needs you. Shall I make us some tea?"
The captain checked his smile and returned his expression to a somewhat neutral disposition when Inara stirred awake. "Truth be told its not late enough in the day for that yet, don't worry about the captain... Just don't get used to that now." Mal kept that last bit lighthearted, didn't want to be too abrasive so soon. "Just wanted to check and see whose coming to breakfast... Before Jayne takes all the choice pieces for himself." the ironic part being it was all the same. He longed for some fresh foods in the galley but they'd been out of the world for a bit too long for that luxury. With a nod of his head he turned and walked back out to leave them a moment longer to rest before the day swept them away.

Only one word got through Kaylee's sleep addled state: Breakfast. It conjured up an image of a huge bowl of strawberries, plump and juicy and all those other things that made a strawberry perfectly ripe for the picking. Even half asleep, she knew that wasn't what she was gonna find in the kitchen but her stomach still gave a great growl of annoyance that she was layin' there when she could be on her way to feed it. So she sat up, taking care not to tip the hammock in the process.
"May as well get to the kitchen before Jayne eats everything." She was well on her way to the hatch when she stopped suddenly and glanced back at Inara with an amused raised eyebrow. "Did Cap'n just call you darlin'?

INARA
"May as well get to the kitchen before Jayne eats everything."
She laughed. "We may already be too late."
"Did Cap'n just call you darlin'?"
"Oh, he calls everyone 'darlin'," she said smoothly. Though up until now, with her, it had always been attached to a condescending statement. "It's just something people tend to do as they get older and have trouble remembering names," she said with a teasing grin.
A good-natured jab at Mal's expense put things more into normalcy and, she hoped, would steer Kaylee's mind away from whatever fanciful thoughts were starting to form.

The speakers momentarily crackled to life with Inara's usual serenely toned voice following. "Kaylee, I could use your assistance in the Common Area, please."
