The fog that had turned her world black was beginning to dissipate and with it, a throbbing of her head. She groaned and reached up to her temple but stopped as the motion made her queasy. Her eyes opened in momentary panic but when she registered that she was in the cargo bay and Mal and Book were hunched nearby, the panic disappeared and she closed her eyes against the light that stabbed at her eyes like needles. "What happened," she asked weakly.

"Agent Carter," "You have been away from the Academy too long, perhaps? I would look to your tracking when you can not smell the cheese dangling in front of your nose."
"Kinda hard to do a decent job with a splitting head and teetering on a spiral to certain death, thanks to the bang-up job you guys did the last time you meddled with my brain," she gritted as she fell in step behind him. "You know damn well that I'm almost out of meds and that the only reason I'm standing here is because I've been spreading my dosage dangerously thin and resisting tapping into my senses at a deeper level, so you'll have to pardon my shoddy work," she said bitterly.
"And if my heart stops so does this ships part in this little adventure."
She glanced out at the missile turret as it adjusted and settled in their direction. Double gǒushǐ. She should have shot him already, before he had the chance to activate the dead-man missile but she'd let her anger and bitterness distract her. Wendy knew damn well he would activate the missile as soon as they were clear of Serenity. They always 'cleaned up' after a mission.
With no other option, Wendy shot the crew a 'Get ready, I'm about to do something stupid' glance. Thankfully, the Hand of Blue had bought Wendy's bullshit and felt no qualm about having his back to her as she followed behind like a good little soldier. Taking advantage of her position, she cold-cocked him on the back of the head with her gun.
Due to her position, she wouldn't have been able to try and stop River from hitting the ground but she didn't have to. Having read her glance, the closest of the crew, Book, had gotten there in a flash and had caught her just as she'd reached the ground, a hand behind her head before it could hit the cargo bay floor. She gave him a nod, impressed at his speed and agility. Not surprising though, given his file. He hadn't always been a shepherd.
Letting someone else attend to the Hand of Blue, Wendy went for the remote that had fallen from his hand and skidded across the floor. Just a glance at it as she picked it up had her hopes drop. It was a small and simple one-button remote, designed only for a one-time use. To activate. "Shit," she said, throwing it at the ground. "No kill-switch. I'll have to get on board their ship and manually shut it down."
[gǒushǐ = shit]

Mal
The man crumpled to the floor and the preacher sprang into action before River had a chance to follow him into a heap. "I'll have to get on board their ship and manually shut it down," the woman said. The captain turned his head to his mechanic, propped up next to him. "Kaylee? Think you can give this woman a hand? I know you're tired but we are in a world of hurt if that thing goes off. Serenity needs you." After her display Mal was willing to give in to that gut feeling, this Agent Carter did alright by him so far. But the charade was a little convincing so she wasn't in the clear yet. "Zoe you go with em," he added quickly as he stood up and made sure everyone else was moving. "Jayne, the suit." He didn't need to elaborate.

CAVANAUGH
"I'll lend a hand," Cav said. He didn't need to tell either Mal or Zoe that he was more than familiar with Alliance weapons systems. Zoe had recognized the name of his ship as having come from one of the tanks they'd faced on Serenity. It was a soldier's understanding that the battle was long over that kept them from trying to kill each other anew.
"Hopefully the crew, if there is one, will be co-operative." He headed down the ramp, a few steps behind Wendy.

"They generally prefer to work alone," she called over her shoulder in response. Wendy kept a quick pace, not wasting time glancing behind but by the sound of footsteps, knew at least one other besides Cav followed.

"So I'm dealing with an automated firing sequence," Cavanaugh said. "Good. If all else fails, you pull the plug." What he didn't add was that certain systems had a built in fail-safe, or rather a fail- UNsafe. If the system lost power, the weapons discharged. The those systems were rare for a reason; they were too dangerous for 'civilized' society. Out here, all bets were off. ***CAv follows Wendy as she exits to Planets, Places, and Other Ships - Hands of Blue's Ship*** Follow the yellow brick road....

Mal
The captain watched as their allies boarded the agent's shuttle. He didn't know what they were going to find and he also didn't know what they could do about it. Mal looked down at Kaylee and put on an encouraging smile. He knew his mechanic, and that little lady could get anything done. Their lives depended on it. But he wasn't going to send someone somewhere he wouldn't go himself. He nodded to Zoe, he would take care of this.
Jayne hoisted the unconscious assailant by the seat of his pants and hauled him away so Reynolds didn't give that another thought. He knelt down next to the young woman at his feet. "You ready for this little Kaylee?" he gave her a moment and then slid one hand under her legs and the other supporting her back. His eyes met the Shepherd's and he got serious. "Shepherd, get her to safety." It was not so much of an order as it was full of concern as he looked down at Inara. And he let it show in his voice. He hoped she was still out of it but this was no place for her to be... Without another word, up they went and he carried Kaylee into the enemy ship.

Speechless, Inara couldn't help stare back up at Mal and then he was gone. It was rare when he let his guard down and looked at her like that and every time, it caught her off guard. She watched him and several people, one of which was a stranger, head off the ship. She looked back at Book. "Was that Cavanaugh?" And the sight of Jayne picking up a man by the seat of his pants caught her eye. "What happened?" She asked Book as she watched Zoe also going about cleaning up whatever had just occurred.
Book had River back on her feet. The fall had jostled her out of whatever trance the man had placed her in with just a few muttered words. He'd be sure to bring this trigger problem to Simon's attention. Satisfied that River appeared to be fine, Book was quick to act on Mal's request. He crouched in front of Inara. "Let's get you to your shuttle and we'll fill you in later," Book responded with his deep, calming voice. He stood and held out his hands to her and to lighten the mood, added, "Captain's orders."
Inara smiled weakly and reached up for Book's outstretched hands and found herself swiftly lifted from the ground. Dizzy and disoriented, she wobbled. "Woah, easy there, Shepherd." She let him put her arm across his shoulder then he placed his arm around her waist, holding her steady as they headed for the stairs. "Someone ask Wash to stop spinning the ship," she joked.
"River, could you please get your brother?" Book called over his shoulder.

Zoe tightened the constrictor knot around the living assailant's wrists, just below his blue gloves. He wasn't going anywhere now- his arms and legs bound together like a tied hog. Just the way they needed him. With her part of the 'clean up' done, Zoe left Jayne to finish up and briskly made her way to the bridge to track down her wayward husband.

Jayne was grabbing at the end of the rope, with which Zoe had bound the leftover Hand of Blue. This was more like a job for him. "C'mon, blue piece of shit, we're gonna take ya for walkies now.", he said with a smirk on his lips, dragging that one along behind him. Even if he had to admit, that this would be way more fun, if the dog wasn't unconscious. Well, can't have everythin'…

The blue light still was on. No. It got dimmed. Still there were that voices. Dimmed either. Her feet were touching the ground again. For a little moment they were just free. Made her fly. But then someone was holding her head. Stopped her flight. Simon? No. Simon wasn’t here. Where was he?
"River, could you please get your brother?"
In amazement she was staring down. Down to the man with the creepy hair. Well, hair was bound together. Thank goodness! River gave him a little nod, before she turned around to get back to the ship. She has to find Simon to tell him the blue light has broken.

"River, could you please get your brother?" Book called over his shoulder."
"The infirmary will do just fine," she called after. "Simon's leg," she added in answer to Book's are you sure look.
It would also be easier on Book and herself to not have to try and manage the stairs in her dizzying state. Honestly, how many times did she need to insist on being treated no differently than the rest of the crew? Just because she paid passage aboard Serenity in the manner of renting a shuttle rather than joining in whatever odd-ended wobbly-headed doll caper or herd of cow transport job they wrangled up. She'd done her fair share of contributing nonetheless. Enough of a contribution to warrant equal treatment. Wanting to become a part of a rag-tag crew, wandering the black, never knowing where the next job and pay will come from... She reminded herself that this was yet another reason she'd been considering leaving and told herself to stop further dizzying her head with these thoughts until at least whatever she'd been shot up with was out of her system.

"I'll give you one reason," Cav said as he followed Wendy back into the Serenity's cargo bay. "You just did Malcolm Reynolds and his ship and crew a solid. Out here that means something. You and I just helped pull this ship out from literally under the guns of the Alliance. If there is any way he can help you, he will."
He looked back at the Blue Sun ship. "Did you really have to scuttle her? We could have got some serious coin out of that thing. Would have made life a whole lot easier out here."

"Good to know it's true what's said about him. But it's also known that he's fiercely protective of his crew," she pointed out. "Best I have less working against me."
"Did you really have to scuttle her? We could have got some serious coin out of that thing. Would have made life a whole lot easier out here."
"Not if it came with the risk of getting Blue Sun on your tail," she said with a stony expression. "Trust me, you're on the easier path." She heard Serenity's engines roar to life and as the cargo bay was deserted, made a path for the infirmary. "Have your people keep watch. I'm guessing after Blue Sun is done, they'll leave it for the vultures. Let other people clean up their mess. That was part of my job description." Wendy readjusted her hold on the box. "They prefer getting rid of evidence of any failures. Burn. Bury. Dismantle." Her brows furrowing in anger as she bit out the word they'd used for her. "Deactivate."

"I'll take your word for it," Cavanaugh said. "Sounds like they're firing up and getting ready to launch. I'd better bail and head for my ship, unless I want to go for a long ride."
He gave Wendy a quick hug. "Let me know how things turn out." It was better than asking her to contact him if she didn't die. She likely knew what he meant anyway.

***Inara and River enter on top level from Infirmary on way to Inara's shuttle***
They were safe now so her adrenaline levels were back to normal. Inara felt her eyelids growing heavier, each step a little harder to make and becoming more dependent on River's help. Almost there, she thought. She heard voices below and glanced down as they passed. A man hugging a woman holding a box. The woman was a stranger but the man, she recognized that uniform. And the build and the haircut. She suddenly remembered that she'd thought she'd seen him earlier in the chaos.
"Is that Richard?" she asked, a tired slur in her speech. But she didn't have the energy to stop and exchange niceties.

"Sounds like they're firing up and getting ready to launch. I'd better bail and head for my ship, unless I want to go for a long ride." "Let me know how things turn out."
Wendy managed to awkwardly return the hug one armed as she balanced her hold on the box with the other. He was leaving. The only person she knew. He'd done enough for her already and she couldn't ask more.
"I will," she promised. "Thank you. For everything." She hadn't intended it to sound so final. It was simply the facts of her situation that made it so.
"Is that Richard?"
Wendy glanced up in the direction of the faint voice and watched as two ladies disappeared into one of the shuttles right as the Captain's voice came over the comms.
"We're getting out of here. Everyone who's coming aboard, get aboard."
She was struck with a sudden realization. "Do they even know I was coming aboard?"
"Not to worry. You're welcome here as my guest," came the deep soothing voice of the Shepherd from the lower entrance of the cargo bay.
He made her feel even more welcome when he signaled her over to join him at the entrance, a gentle hand on her back guiding her over the threshold. She smiled at him gratefully.
"Wait here," he said as he stepped into the cargo bay and headed for the bay door. "Captain," he began, now addressing Richard, "we're setting out to retrieve our pilot before leaving the planet. You're welcome to stay if you wish without fear of a long separation from your ship." With hand resting on the button, he waited for the Captain's decision. "The choice is yours."

Richard. Not many called him that. It made him pause long enough to hear the Shepherd's words.
Cav wasn't familiar with the man who extended the invitation but he clearly had the authority to do so. The was something about him, a quiet power that went beyond the physical. Cav smiled.
"I think I can handle being away from the old girl for a while. Besides, I need to thank Wash for tipping me off as to what was happening. Walking in blind would have been bad. And if he's not at the controls, you might be in need of a pilot for a while. If you'll have me, I'll gladly take the ride."
He extended his hand. "Richard Cavanaugh, captain and entire crew of the Cobblestone Road II. I don't think we've met."

Book
The captain extended his hand. "Richard Cavanaugh, captain and entire crew of the Cobblestone Road II. I don't think we've met." The shepherd reached out and took that outstretched hand, pulling his new acquaintance aboard. "I don't think we've had the pleasure." he added as he hit the controls to close the inner doors to the cargo bay. It was best to keep things simple and leave it at that. It was true, he had never met- "Shepherd Book, you may call me Book." the older man said with a warm smile as the ships engine's started to shudder.

CAVANAUGH
Shepherd.... That explained the presence the man had.
"Book it is," Cavanaugh said with a smile that felt oddly unfamiliar. "Call me Cav."
It had been a long time since he'd been this close to a shepherd. The last one had helped him bury friends, reciting prayers in a faith not his own to make sure the dead rested peacefully. He'd been a short, thin man but he carried himself with the same strength of faith and quiet wisdom that Book did. He'd offered to let Richard unburden his soul over a bottle of very cheap, very strong bathtub gin but there were graves to dig and they'd never gotten around to it.
He'd stayed behind when Richard was evacuated, to tend the wounded, they dying, the dead and those who just needed a quiet word of encouragement. His name had been Tailor. He'd made a joke about how badly Richard's uniform needed mending when they parted. Cav picked at a loose thread self-consciously.
"Are you a drinking man, Book?", he asked conversationally. "I knew a shepherd once who was a drinking man. He said it helped him relate. It made him easy to talk to."

Book
"Call me Cav." The captain picked at his uniform somewhat self-consciously. There seemed to be a great deal going on beneath the surface with the man. That made two of them. "Are you a drinking man, Book? I knew a shepherd once who was a drinking man. He said it helped him relate. It made him easy to talk to." A knowing smile crossed Book's face for a moment before moving on. "I'm afraid I will have to disappoint you there Captain." He furrowed his brow slightly and added with a rise in his tone, "But I think you might find some interesting conversation non-the-less. I wasn't always a shepherd after all."
He once again took Wendy by the hand and lead her into the hold before turning to face them both. "Allow me to show you to some of our personal best by way of refreshment. I keep a few items in the galley for special occasions like this." As he started to walk towards the stairs, the Shepherd turned his head towards the young woman by his side. "I don't believe I caught your name my dear?"

It had been a long time since she'd been treated as other than a tool of the Alliance or object in a lab experiment. A genuine smile touched her lips and as it seemed the worry of being thrown off the ship was gone, she felt the tension leave her.
"Wendy," she said as she matched his pace. "Thank you for your hospitality, Book."
Until he'd mentioned refreshments, she hadn't realized how long it had been since she'd eaten. Suddenly, the thought of food took precedence over the urgency of speaking to Dr. Tam. Tracking him down had been the near impossible part and now that that had been accomplished, sparing a little time for a meal and to relax could be afforded.

Wendy stood near the hatch door with the others who'd be boarding the Shadowheart. She heard the ports of the two ships seal and when the hatch doors opened, felt the rush of air as the other ship greedily sucked in the oxygen from Serenity.
Other than the flashing red warning lights and the repetitive shrill of the emergency alert, there were no signs of movement or life on the other ship. Its crew were huddled in one of the shuttles and may not have a way of knowing that they'd arrived until the slight jostling of the two ships docking.
She stood back respectfully, waiting for Mal to give orders.

Mal and Zoe, joined Wendy by the open cargo bay door. Mal was still skeptical about this but Inara seemed certain that this Madison was friendly. He trusted her judgment, he wasn't getting that deep down uncertain feeling. "Kaylee, Doc, you two ready?" He called out.
"All set, Captain." Kaylee smiled and held up her toolbox, ready to tinker.
"You and the doc stay behind us until we're certain this isn't a trap. We still don't know if this captain is speaking the truth." He turned and looked at Simon, who was just joining them at the cargo bay door. "I told Jayne to stay put, we don't have to worry about him." He said it more for Wendy but Jayne was a wild card and this situation didn't need his guns. "Not that you need too," He smiled.

"You and the doc stay behind us until we're certain this isn't a trap. We still don't know if this captain is speaking the truth."
"Of course, happy to stay behind," Simon agreed, tightly grasping his medical bag. The captain's orders put him beside Kaylee, which was always pleasant, but also out of harm's way. Simon still had nightmares about the ship they'd come across that had been ravaged by Reavers. All those people suffering such torture. Even though that kind of brutality wasn't waiting aboard the Shadowheart, it was still hostile territory until Mal, Zoe, and Wendy had cleared the crippled ship and Kaylee worked her magic with the engine to get it working again.

Wendy was relieved that Jayne wouldn't be accompanying them. That man was a headache and she had enough of one as it was.
Time was not on the side of the Shadowheart crew. She hoped they'd made it here before life support had completely depleted. Oxygen was pouring in via Serenity until repairs could be made but this was a large ship and the shuttle was most likely sealed to preserve what oxygen it had had left. Hopefully that hadn't depleted as well. While Simon spoke, Wendy took a step forward into the corridor of the joined ships and closed her eyes, reaching out with her mind, searching for the feelings of life.
Pain. Love. Worry. Anxiety. She was hit with the flood of emotions of several people that caused her headache to spike. Wendy flinched and cut off her sixth sense. She quickly composed herself as the spike of pain faded back to the more tolerable ache. "Found them," she announced. "This way."
