Wash listened to her go on and on, her brain just opening up and spilling more secrets. It was no secret that Wash liked this girl, she was great and a great ally. He hoped everything went well and she was able to stick around and help the crew.
"And there... we... go, There, He's home." Wash was dumbfounded at her ability to just hack into things like that. If she could do something like this, what stopped the Alliance from doing the same thing?
"You um... should talk to Kaylee about upping the security on Serenity," Wash smirked and took a look at the screen.
"I think you may be the Captain's new best friend, This way, we can see how much security being a retired Alliance surgeon gets you." Young innocent children were being taken from homes and turned into weapons, like River and Wendy. Giving the guise about higher education and being subjected to something like this.
"We should tell the Captain, once he gives the okay I can set a course for Newhall."

"How...?"
"Third year course in Special Agent school," she joked before chuckling at their reactions. "It's--It was," she corrected, "a part of my job. From a young age, I took right to them," she gestured to the computer. "Plus I know the Alliance's programs inside and out so that was a piece of cake compared to other places I'd had to get into."
"You um... should talk to Kaylee about upping the security on Serenity,"
Wendy smiled. "I'd be more than happy to. Already tightened a few things up in order to get through and you should be able to get a clearer connection when reaching out to contacts further out."
"I think you may be the Captain's new best friend, This way, we can see how much security being a retired Alliance surgeon gets you."
"Alliance calls it security, I call it spying to protect their best interests. Nakamura most likely doesn't know he's being watched. Probably assumes he is but the Alliance would deny it. It is an Alliance satellite we're watching him through though," she confirmed.
"We should tell the Captain, once he gives the okay I can set a course for Newhall."
"Good idea," she nodded. "Seeing as he only leaves his farm to attend public functions, this is the most private location we'd be able to approach him. Since he's just returned, most likely he doesn't have plans to be going anywhere soon but better to play it safe and hightail it over soon as Captain approves."

Well, of course the Alliance has eyes and ears everywhere, Simon thought. It would explain how those Hands of Blue agents had managed to track down him and River not once, but twice now. So at this point, he was glad to turn over operations to the Captain, Zoe, and the rest of the crew.
"Since he's just returned, most likely he doesn't have plans to be going anywhere soon but better to play it safe and hightail it over soon as Captain approves."
"But once we're there, we can't just knock on the front door," Simon remarked. "I mean, I attended his lectures but so did hundreds of other residents. And he probably knows I wouldn't be there on the Alliance's behalf."

Wash didn't have any idea on how to get them close enough to Nakamura, so he stayed quiet and let the other two work out all the details. He Focused on setting a course that was heading close to Newhall, so he wouldn't need to do much adjusting when Mal gave the okay. "I'm sure you'll figure out something."

***Jayne enters***
Jayne had spent the rest of the last evening alone in his bunk, as he hadn't seen any job for him to fulfill. In the morning, after taking an unhealthy care of Vera, he had decided to search for the Doc and their new guest. He somehow had a feeling she would mean trouble after all. Also, one crazy chick onboard their ship was enough to his liking.
Jayne had trudged round several rooms to finally found them on the bridge. He tramped in not exactly quiet.
"Hey.", he was greeting everybody around before he headed towards Wendy and the laptop. "Well? Did ya have luck with this? Any news?" Jayne gave her a grin, as he wasn't expecting they would have found out anything by now.

"But once we're there, we can't just knock on the front door," "I mean, I attended his lectures but so did hundreds of other residents. And he probably knows I wouldn't be there on the Alliance's behalf."
There was most definitely no way anyone with ties to Blue Sun would think Dr. Simon Tam would be doing anything on the behalf of the Alliance. She thought there was a chance that Nakamura might recognize her and the chances of him or most anybody outside of Blue Sun knowing she'd gone AWOL were very slim. Still though, she didn't feel it was necessary to fool Nakamura. She'd prefer to appeal to his sense of decency; the part of him that worked so hard to safely remove himself from the horrible things Blue Sun was doing.
"I'm sure you'll figure out something."
Wendy simply nodded in agreement. It would be better to save her thoughts and ideas for the time they'd be sitting down to discuss plans with the person that would make the final call present.
Wendy tensed, sensing an oncoming disturbance just before all 6'4" of it stepped over the threshold and filled the room with the aura of trigger-happy chaos.
"Well? Did ya have luck with this? Any news?"
'Terrif.' Wendy thought sarcastically. At least he appeared to be in a less antagonistic mood. Still snide and smug though so it gave her great pleasure to angle her chair more toward him to return a casual smug look of her own as she spoke.
"As a matter of fact, we did. That right there is live feed of Dr. Evan Nakamura." She gestured to the monitor above then crossed her arms again and remained seated casually in the chair. "He used to work for Blue Sun and the Alliance but is retired now, living on Newhall. Wash has already made some minor course adjustments and we're ready to work out the details with Captain Reynolds."

"Dr. Nakamura is unparalleled in the field of neurological regeneration," Simon added in explanation. "He likely knows what the Alliance did to Miss Carter, and to my sister. Which makes him our best hope at undoing it." He looked back at the monitor, observing the surveillance feed. "And his former position would buy the best in security on a border planet, so there should be a lot of things for you to shoot," he told Jayne, hoping this would improve his outlook on their new mission.

"-so there should be a lot of things for you to shoot," Like Jayne needed an excuse to shoot things. Wash just didn't get Jayne, he didn't really understand him. All he knew about Jayne, he liked money, drinking, and boy did he love his guns. Wash could see that Jayne maybe cared a bit about them all, he stuck around, he did saving when he had to, Wash knew deep down there was a man down there who cared- sometimes it just took a while to come out.

Mal leaned against the bulkhead in the hatchway watching them all fawn over the cortex monitor. "Shall I call Mal over the com?" Mal smiled to himself as he continued to remain silent. It wouldn't take long for Wendy to realize he was standing there, he had no doubt. That's why he left his mind back in his room. Where he had remained for a good long while this morning... Late morning... Okay early afternoon.
The Captain had earned it. Almost having his brains fried and killing more feds for some runaways he barely knew gave him that privilege. "You can certainly try," He said as he pushed himself away from the side of the hatch. "Good job Miss Carter. Very impressive. So now we know at least that its a trap. We can't just walk in there to his home without being live on every bodies personal data pads. Everybody who wants us dead. Most of us."
Reynolds studied the screen for a good long moment. "Appeals to me just fine but not many people would choose that life that wasn't born to it. 'specially core folk used to their comforts. Like as not his prison rather than his home. Bet they paid for it and everything." He weaved his way around the group to lean against the wall next to the console. "That being the case he probably doesn't like being called up and dismissed on a whim. You might get his support. If you can get to him quiet-like. What's your plan?"

"Shall I call Mal over the com?"
Wendy was about to reply in the affirmative when she felt a sense of amusement coming from a different direction than the group she faced. She hitched a thumb over her shoulder with an amused smile of her own just as Mal spoke.
"You can certainly try,"
Wendy turned along with the group to watch him shift away from his casual lean. She wondered how long he'd been standing there. It appeared for far longer than it usually took her to know someone had sneaked up on them. Not that she was surprised. Wendy already knew she was glitching but even still, he'd done a commendable job keeping his mind and emotions in check. She suspected that was because of her.
"Good job Miss Carter. Very impressive. So now we know at least that its a trap. We can't just walk in there to his home without being live on every bodies personal data pads. Everybody who wants us dead. Most of us."
"Appeals to me just fine but not many people would choose that life that wasn't born to it. 'specially core folk used to their comforts. Like as not his prison rather than his home. Bet they paid for it and everything."
She nodded to let him know he was most likely right, mentally adding what everyone figured, 'Easier to set it up with all the nice spying amenities that way'. She'd seen many "VIP homes" in her days.
"That being the case he probably doesn't like being called up and dismissed on a whim. You might get his support. If you can get to him quiet-like. What's your plan?"
"His file doesn't place him as a high-risk. He comes when he's called, knows to keep his mouth shut so they've rewarded him with a long leash. This satellite providing the feed," she tapped the monitor near her, "is a fairly older model. I'm not finding any additional components--video or audio--from within the compound feeding into it. Seems this overhead view is enough to appease them, far as Nakamura is concerned."
Now that she'd explained the target and his environment, she got into a couple of possible plans, looking between the group but mostly to Mal as he was the final deciding factor. "I could shut down the satellite while we're down there. Since it's old, it's like to be glitchy on occasion. That might bring a casual sort of suspicion that could result in sending a person or two out right away to sniff around. Other option is I could set the feed on a loop. There's a team of bored Alliance underlings who sit all day and watch as different feeds pass across their monitors. Anyone happening to be glancing as his feed passes their monitor wouldn't notice but in the off chance someone decides to zoom in or change the angle of the camera, well, that might well bring a fleet of Purple Bellies to Nakamura's doorstep."

"Well, I think you'll find this crew rather resourceful when it comes to evading the Alliance," Simon interjected, after listening to the exchange between Mal and Wendy. Once a mission was in the planning stages, he had little to contribute. Usually he was needed when the plan went wrong. "If you'll excuse me, I should go check on River."

"Ah.", was everything Jayne came up with when Wendy told him that they indeed had already found something out; And not an insignificant amount either.
With crossed arms he looked from man to man, or in this case from woman to man and back to woman, let the conversation around pass him when eventually the captain was there to intervene too.
When the doc walked pass him to leave for his sister, he had to think of something he had said before. Something about undoing it. It was not that Jayne earlier would have swallowed down his words because of something people called a sense of tact, but rather had the doc's legs been faster than Jayne's thoughts.
"Well, as for his wacko sister I doubt it's possible to heal what had been greatly damaged." Jayne burst out into a dumb-sounding laughter until he noticed no one except him was getting the joke - like always.

"You can certainly try," Wash spun his chair around to face Mal and smirked, he could be mighty sneaky when he wanted to be. He wondered how long the captain was listening for? He guessed the whole conversation once Jayne made his way onto the bridge.
Wash stayed quiet and listened to everyone else as they spoke.
"If you'll excuse me, I should go check on River." and no sooner than Simon left, Jayne opened his mouth.
"Well, as for his wacko sister I doubt it's possible to heal what had been greatly damaged." Sometimes Wash just couldn't believe the things that came out of Jayne's mouth. He let a cuss escape before turning to Jayne and slammed his fists down on the arms of his chair.
"Do you even let the words get to your brain before you speak?"

Just as Simon disappeared through the door, Jayne opened his big mouth, speaking loud enough that Simon had no doubt heard.
"Well, as for his wacko sister I doubt it's possible to heal what had been greatly damaged."
Wendy's smile faded away along with a bit of her color as she felt the light of hope within flicker out. The fact that she could feel the amusement and ridicule he'd felt when saying it only made it worse. She was angered over his cruel words against River but what he said had struck a very personal cord with her. It was a stark reminder of the damage done to her that left her with the slim to none chance of seeing more'n a handful of days. Wendy suddenly felt utterly foolish for allowing herself to feel hopeful, especially after all the fruitless time and effort that had been put in in the past regarding her situation.
"Do you even let the words get to your brain before you speak?"
Wendy stood and quickly interjected before more could be said. "Seems we have our course. If you don't mind, Captain, I think I'll finally take the Doc's advice and rest up a bit, talk details after." She took quick steps, pausing beside Jayne. She looked up at him with a mix of anger and hurt and added in a dry, even tone, "Or maybe I'll save y'all the trouble of a wasted trip and toss myself from the airlock."
Without waiting for the Captain's approval or giving Jayne the chance to reply, she quickly made her leave.

"Do you even let the words get to your brain before you speak?" Jayne turned to Wash, the same blankly expression on his face that had appeared once he had realized no one except him was laughing. And just as he was about to defend himself or at least to come up with something, their guest was interjecting.
"Seems we have our course. If you don't mind, Captain, I think I'll finally take the Doc's advice and rest up a bit, talk details after." Jayne's eyes wandered to the side, when she paused right next to him, actually on her way to step out. "Or maybe I'll save y'all the trouble of a wasted trip and toss myself from the airlock." He frowned at that for a moment, as he watched her passing by and noisily closing the door behind.
"Oh c'mon... No one here takin' a joke?", he eventually shrugged, throwing a helpless look around the remainders.

"Oh c'mon... No one here takin' a joke?" Wash really didn't understand how this man was able to form breath.
"Nothing about any of this is funny, none of it." Wash pressed a few buttons and started off in the correct course. "We can't even begin to understand what they went through. You really need to think before you speak, try hard." Wash didn't know what else to say, if he was a strong man he would punch Jayne in the face. Wendy and River had been through god knows what and Wash couldn't imagine the pain.

The captain watched as everyone was excusing themselves one by one and remained silent. He didn't see the point in stopping anyone since what had been needed, was said. Wash was plotting his course but doing so angrily. To spare him the distraction and possibly plotting their course through a star, he decided to intervene.
"Jayne your... humor, while sometimes poetic, can be a bit out a place at times. As our public relations officer you have had your hands full with our little River. Do you really want to tango with another stranger who would make your brainpan a might bit leaky... well, more so. Than keep it up."
The captain walked past the large man and started taking his own leave. "I've got to say, it would be a bad choice to put any coin on you coming out on top this time." Mal stopped in the hall outside the crews quarters and looked back at Jayne through the bridge's hatch. "You're more than welcome to speak your mind, just play nice now." He cast a knowing expression at him and held it a moment. Wendy could take care of herself, so long as her health kept up. Which he was intending to assist her in making sure it did. But if Cobb didn't lay off the crew then they would have a problem. He trusted Jayne to remember their little talk at the airlock the last time the man didn't let his brain in on his personal plans. He didn't need to say anything out loud. Reynolds simply nodded and turned, proceeding down the hall and out of sight.

"Nothing about any of this is funny, none of it.""We can't even begin to understand what they went through. You really need to think before you speak, try hard." Just as he had thought. No one's taking a joke.
"Calm down, man. Got it.", Jayne said with rolled eyes. Why was everyone making a big deal out of it? It was not that he would have said they shall toss themselves from the airlock, to say it with their new guest's words. But behind all these self-made excuses Jayne, in fact, felt a little bad. Mal's following speech about his poetic humor didn't make that any better.
"Jayne your... humor, while sometimes poetic, can be a bit out a place at times. As our public relations officer you have had your hands full with our little River. Jayne replied with an slight affirmative nod, before he watched Mal leave. He didn't want to get into trouble with everyone just because of his loose mouth. Well, that was until he again wouldn't remember and release another of his misplaced jokes.
Eventually, Jayne turned around to the only left person with him. With a shrug, he stated: "Gonna grab some lunch. Just in case someone needs me." And the joke in this was, he really contemplated someone could need him right now. Without another word, he walked towards the hatch.

"Calm down, man. Got it." Did he really though? Did he actually get it or was he just saying that? Wash wanted this man off his bridge, far away before he did something his face would regret.
"Jayne your... humor, while sometimes poetic, can be a bit out a place at times. As our public relations officer you have had your hands full with our little River. And just like that Mal was gone, situation defused- as much as it can be with Jayne.
"Gonna grab some lunch. Just in case someone needs me."
"Pi Gu Hwen Dan," Wash muttered under his breath as he ran his hand over his face. "Breathe," He told himself and leaned back in his chair, "just breathe, Hoban." When it came down to it, Jayne was family and Wash cared a great deal for him. He showed his loyalty in different ways but sometimes Wash wondered what went on in his head. One day he half expected Jayne to sell them out for the right price, what a day that would be.

A little bit of time had passed and Wash couldn't help but wonder if Wendy was okay? As much as Jayne made him and everyone else crazy, he was a needed member of the crew. Wash wouldn't stop worrying about him and his loyalty but knew Mal and Zoe would keep an eye on him. It didn't make it any easier," Wash sighed.

After the family meeting, Wash excused himself from the lounge and headed for the bridge. Plopping down into his seat, he set a course for Newhall and than just kicked back to relax. Zoe joined him for a bit of the trip, sitting on his lap and sharing a kiss or seven. Soon she was off to get ready for the away mission and it was just him and his dinosaurs. "I got the time." He grinned.
He had exactly a half an hour before the little light went off on his console, followed by a distress call...
Wash pressed a button and grabbed the walkie, "Hey guys, we got a distress called coming in."

"Wash, locate that distress call. We need to shut it down..." Mal sighed, this really wasn't the time for this. He hoped it was serious... "Play it." He watched as Wash pressed the button and a voice sounded over the system- she sounded in desperate need of aid. They would have to take a tiny detour, he just hoped this wasn't a trap.

***Inara enters***
Inara had been keeping mostly to her shuttle, relaxing and continuing to work on her potential back-up plan. Certainly not because she was avoiding someone so that time and distance could rebuild walls.
Curiosity and concern about the distress signal and feeling a little stir crazy, Inara had emerged from her shuttle. Mal was already there, as she knew he would be. She caught herself observing his profile but quickly tapped into her training, blocking whatever thoughts and feelings were attempting to surface. Mind now clear, she picked up on the last part of the distress call.
"...this rendezvous at these coordinates."
The voice triggered a familiarity. Something vague and distant. "Could you play that again?" she asked, stepping over the threshold and sidling between Wash and Mal at the console. Her eyes and attention were fully intent on the monitor while she waited for Wash to comply.

"Could you play that again?"
"Play it." Some of the other crew came onto the Bridge to watch as well.
"A please would be nice," He pressed the button and a slightly blurred and snowy image appeared and a woman's voice sounded over the speakers on the bridge.

"A please would be nice," Mal didn't pay attention to Wash once the image came on the screen. The grainy image appeared before them, this woman's face all over the consoles of the bridge. It was hard to make out at first- as the message played the sound warped slightly.
"Can you clean up the image?" Wash started to turn a dial only able to make it slightly clear. "There she is," It didn't look like a trap, she looked worn down, sleep deprived. Either way they needed to get out there, to that distress call.
"Trap?" Mal heard Zoe ask and Mal shook his head.
"Can't be sure, either way, we need to shut it down."

Inara intently watched the screen and honed in on the familiar voice. The image was grainy and Mal beat her to requesting it be cleaned up.
The face clicked with the voice and the name... Madison Haley. She knew this woman, but from where? Inara quietly racked her memories while the others spoke.
"Trap?"
"Can't be sure, either way, we need to shut it down."
Various locations ran through her head and finally, one of them aligned with the face and voice and triggered memories from long ago. 'Mads,' she thought to herself. That's what they'd called her and why 'Madison' hadn't fully clicked. "No..." she began distractedly. "No, it's not a trap." She pulled her eyes from the monitor and looked at Mal, giving a graceful gesture to the still image of the woman that remained there. "I know her. We were at Madrassa together a lifetime ago." More memories flooding back of the woman had her saying with confidence, "We can trust her."

"Could be a trap, wouldn't be the first time. Only, that sounds like pure desperation." Wash added.
"Can't be sure, either way, we need to shut it down."
"No..." The Bridge turned their attention to Inara, "No, it's not a trap. I know her. We were at Madrassa together a lifetime ago. We can trust her."

"No...No, it's not a trap. I know her. We were at Madrassa together a lifetime ago. We can trust her." Mal wasn't sure, even Inara said it- a lifetime ago. Madison Haley could be someone very different from the woman she knew.
"People change, she could very well be playing us for fools. We'll go, we'll check it out and hope she's not a scavenger. As a sign of good faith, we'll send the wave. Let's see if anyone's home." Wash pressed a button and nodded towards Mal. "This is Captain Malcolm Reynolds, we got your distress call. Are you still there Captain?"
