Simon
They had almost been found, for the second time in just a few days. Simon groaned with pain as he kneaded his shot leg. For the last hour River and he were hidden in some kind of an air duct, always in fear the man with the blue hands could find them. Deep in fear they could be found he didn't even had the courage to move his leg even when having a bad spasm in the leg. But then River declaired they weren't in danger anymore and left there hideout. He really hoped that she was right as he wasn't able to follow her with that injured leg.
For a short moment he was thinking about the words of that bounty hunter Jubal Early. "Know the kind of pain you're dealing with..." He was wondering if the bounty hunter was still alive, if somebody found him. Maybe he was on that ship of the blue hand. Simon felt the rush of adrenaline in his body as all of the sudden River was running past the entrance to their room. Only in his mind he was rapidly repeating her name.
"River, River, River..." but just a second afterwards he was scolding himself a fool. Of course she wasn't always reading minds especially when she was on the run. He was rising and leaving their room clumbersomely always sweating out running into the next bounty hunter but the floor was empty...

The day Niska's men then the Hands of Blue had attacked finishes out, luckily without any further fanfare.
It is now mid day of the following day.

Inara sat across from River on her bunk, passing the time away with a game of Tall Card. River wasn't always a big conversationalist and Inara respected that, allowing her to start and steer any conversations whenever she wished and at her own pace. Inara patiently did her best to follow along and contribute.
River was doing well at the moment. A good patch. Inara felt the slight vibration of impact when one ship docked to the other. Her eyes went to River to make sure she remained in her good patch. "It seems we've reached the other ship," she said calmly as she placed a round card onto the stack between them. Her eyes momentarily went in the direction of the cargo bay. "I'm glad we were able to pick up their distress call and help. I have an old friend aboard that ship," Inara reassured River.

River sat just staring off into space, or so it seemed. In actuality, she was listening to the ships collide. Two becoming one as the two sealed, "It seems we've reached the other ship," Her eyes landed on the cars, "I'm glad we were able to pick up their distress call and help. I have an old friend aboard that ship,"
"Madison, she's worried about her friends. One's really sick," River knew that reading thoughts made people feel uncomfortable but she was trying her best but sometimes she just couldn't stop it from happening.

Inara looked up from her study of her cards, a bit of surprise sneaking through her calm composure. River's gift never ceased to amaze her.
Inara gave a calm, serene smile. "Yes, Madison. I'm sure she's very worried. But your brother will be at their side soon to tend to the injured. They're in good hands." Inara placed her cards aside and put her full concentration on River. "How are you feeling, bao bei?" she asked, affectionately reaching out and pushing River's hair out of her eyes. Her hand gently brushed River's cheek before returning to her lap.

"Yes, Madison. I'm sure she's very worried. But your brother will be at their side soon to tend to the injured. They're in good hands." Yes, Simon would make everything better- he always made things better. "How are you feeling, bao bei?" River blinked, smiling at Inara and nodded.
"Clarity, so, okay." She was feeling better today, however, she seemed to have only good moments. Time meant very little to her, a week could pass and it seemed like only a day or even minutes. "Inara," She looked at the woman and tilted her head to the side but then she was just lost. "boil, sick, sick." She whimpered and placed her head in her hands before curling up, resting on Inara's lap.

"Clarity, so, okay."
Inara was always worried about River but she never let it show on her face. She used her training to bury the feeling in River's presence in order to avoid it circling back to be picked up by River, potentially causing the girl distress. "I'm so glad to hear that," she said, her voice rich with heartfelt sincerity. Inara took that as a cue to continue with her turn. She picked up her cards and looked them over again with her mind making side thoughts. Distress over the distress someone is feeling toward you. It was quite the catch-22. Wendy might be able to give her better insight on what it was like to live like that and, current issue with the pills aside, how she'd learn to function in a seemingly normal manner. If she found a private moment with Wendy, she'd remember to talk to her about it.
"Inara," "boil, sick, sick."
Just as she was reaching for a card in her hand to play, River pulled her full attention back. She quickly placed her cards aside once again and opened her arms. River's head came to rest in her lap. Inara tenderly ran her hand over River's forehead, first brushing the girl's hair aside and then continued to do so to soothe her. "Shh, you're okay, mei-mei," she cooed. "Everything will be okay."

"Shh, you're okay, mei-mei, Everything will be okay." The pain came and went, the comforting voice of Inara helped soothe her. She stayed pressed against her, not sure how she got into that position but was glad to be in her arms. Sometimes it was like she just blacked out, bad episodes left her confused and dazed. Some days she even felt like she was back at home, or worse- back at the school.
"Nice." She mumbled, eyes slowly closing.

Minutes passed in silence. Book appeared in the doorway, mouth open with the intention of asking after the two of them but with the serene picture of rare peace before him, his mouth closed and transformed into a gentle smile. Inara gave him one in return and Book quietly closed the door.
Inara rested her head against the wall. She closed her eyes, took in a breath, then let it out slowly, relaxing into a meditative state. Her hand stilled, resting gently on River's forehead as she cleared her mind of thoughts and emotions. Perhaps River would be able to pick up on it via transference and be able to do the same for herself. Wendy had been able to help via transference, but Inara figured it was their shared gift that gave them the ability for a more in depth connection. Wishful thinking though it may be, at the very least, in this meditative state, River wouldn't have to contend with Inara's thoughts and emotions.

***Wendy enters from Ship - Shadowheart - Escape Pod***
Well practiced with calming her mind and disconnecting, Wendy was the picture of serenity both inside and out when she gently knocked on the door of Simon and River's bunk. She heard Inara softly beckon her in.
Taking note of Inara's quiet tone, Wendy slowly slid the door open to find River resting her head in Inara's lap. It was unfortunate that such a rare moment of peace for the poor thing had to be interrupted. "Hey there," she said, stepping into the room. Reading the concern on Inara's face, Wendy answered her unspoken question. "We got to your friend and her crew in time. Kaylee's already on repairs. Their infirmary is down so they're on their way over with an injured crewmember."
Wendy shifted her attention to River, squatting to be at her eye level. "Mei-mei, it's gonna get loud and crowded down here real soon." For the two of them, 'loud and crowded' was more of negative connotation in a mental sense. "I could really use a bit of peace and quiet myself," she said companionably, standing and holding out a hand to River. Wendy looked to Inara for her input on where they should retreat to.

Inara was relieved to hear that they'd gotten to Madison's ship in time. She watched Wendy talk to River. Despite River and Wendy having been strangers just a short time ago, she saw the genuine care Wendy had for River. It had been immediate. Something borne from unique life experiences. The way Wendy put her own problems aside to concentrate on River had endeared the near stranger to Inara in turn.
"Why don't we go to my shuttle?" Inara offered. "There is no better private sanctuary aboard the ship. No one is allowed in there without my invitation," she reassured. Though on a few occasions, the Captain had taken it upon himself to invite himself in when hit with a manly and impulsive mood but Inara kept that to herself.

River felt Wendy come in, her eyes slowly opening to see her friend. She smiled, Wendy is very nice and River liked having her around.
"Hey there, We got to your friend and her crew in time. Kaylee's already on repairs. Their infirmary is down so they're on their way over with an injured crewmember." Sally was very sick, that was the name of the sick member. She wasn't sure how she knew that, no she knew- she could read minds. Right, that was it.
"Mei-mei, it's gonna get loud and crowded down here real soon." River wanted to see the crew but she knew it was best to leave. Her mind connections had been all over the place, "I could really use a bit of peace and quiet myself," River knew it was for the best, if she stayed there she wouldn't be able to focus. All she would feel was the lady and that wouldn't go well, and Simon would need little to no distraction to help her.
"Okay," She took Wendy's hand and smiled, giving her a hug.
"Why don't we go to my shuttle? There is no better private sanctuary aboard the ship. No one is allowed in there without my invitation," River looked at Wendy and nodded, just as they reached the doorway to leave. River saw Simon leading two strangers into the infirmary, with the sounds of the others close behind. She didn't get a look before she was ushered away by Inara and Wendy.

About a half hour passes.
During that time, Dex Wilde returned on the Shadowheart away shuttle to reconnect with his crewmates aboard the Serenity and Mal calls for everyone to collect in the Dining Area for a meeting with Dex volunteering to collect Wendy and River for the meeting.

The speakers momentarily crackled to life with Inara's usual serenely toned voice following. "Kaylee, I could use your assistance in the Common Area, please."
