Dr. Hopper's Office

“I woke up at the stroke of midnight yesterday. Or today,” said Marcus Sadler. He sat in the chair that Archie Hopper usually occupied; during their first session, Sadler had taken a liking to it and now sat there while Archie used the couch. Sadler didn’t appear to enjoy the chair, although he did; the strong confidence of his demeanour was always accompanied by a contradictory tenseness. There was no relaxation in him. Dr Hopper had once told him, half-joking, that Sadler reminded him of a sleeping cat. That was because a sleeping cat was never really asleep; it was a spring-loaded rocket that was merely being still. “When I woke, I didn’t even try to get to sleep.”
“What did you do?” “I played solitaire in the den, watched Twin Peaks, flipped through old yearbooks. The usual,” he said evenly. “I had gone to bed at 10, and fallen asleep let’s say, 10:15. That isn’t much sleep for an average person, but I still felt rested.” “And safe?” “I always feel safe, Dr Hopper.” “I meant that you were glad you didn’t have to deal with the dreams.”
Sadler considered. “Yes, I was a little relieved. It’s tedious. You get that, right?” Dr Hopper was quiet for a little while, and glanced down at his notes. “Marcus, I’m not sure what you’re hoping to get out of therapy if you’re not willing to open up-“ Sadler cut him off with a raised hand. “Do not accuse me of not trying. I have opened up more in this office than I ever have in my entire life.”
Hopper nodded. “Maybe that’s the problem. You’re closed off. You distance yourself, what are you afraid of?” “Afraid?” Sadler grinned bitterly. “I’m not afraid of anything, Dr Hopper. If you want to talk about fear, we can talk about you.” “I’m just asking a question.” “And I’m returning the favour. Do you have any idea what the world out there is like? It’s…brutality.” “Honestly, Marcus, I don’t see much brutality in Storybrooke. Aside from the Mayor, maybe.” Hopper forced a laugh, trying to lighten the situation. Marcus would not allow it.
“I’m not saying we’re all setting fire to things and kicking puppies 24/7. I’m saying that the innocence you value so much is…a mask for something else,” he said. “The Mayor isn’t very good at keeping her mask on, but at least honesty peeks out every so often. But in this town, honesty is not the best policy.” “Well, we all lie to a certain extent-“ “I’m a lawyer. Lying is my livelihood. And I can sense lies easier than most.” Sadler smiled again. It was an awful thing to see. Hopper’s brow creased in worry, and then smoothed out as he regained himself. His next words were uncharacteristically blunt and to-the-point. Sadler had driven him there over the weeks.
“Why do you kill yourself in your dreams?”
That gave Sadler pause. The dreams, the nightmares….within them, he always had his hands around the throat of an exact duplicate. “You’re the doctor. Tell me.” Dr Hopper cleared his throat. “Self-loathing, perhaps? A crisis of conscience due to the life you’ve led-“ Sadler laughed so suddenly and abruptly that Hopper jumped in his seat. “Sorry, Dr Hopper. That’s just…thanks, I needed that,” he said, still chuckling. He stood. “Crisis of conscience…I was wrong, you really do have a sense of humour. Let that side out more often, it’s good.” “Uh, we still have 20 minutes left-“ “I’m cutting the session short. If you look at the cheque I gave you for this week, you’ll notice it isn’t as much as it usually is. But for the time, it’s fair, right? See you later, Dr Hopper,” said Sadler, turning and leaving before Archie Hopper could say another word.
***Marcus Sadler leaves***

The clock, which has been stuck at 8:15 for as long as anyone can remember, began to move once again promptly at 8:15 p.m.
Several hours pass. It is now the morning after the clock has started.
A few may have noticed the clock moving last night and those close enough may have realized when it chimed the 9 p.m. hour. Others may have learned by word of mouth or not until they next arrived in town.

Archie
Archie sat down at his desk, pulling out his breakfast. He only had a few minutes before he needed to head over to Lily’s house, but that should give him enough time to eat breakfast. He lifted the blueberry muffin up to his mouth, prepared to take a bite, when suddenly there was a knock at the door.
Who could it be, so early in the morning? Most of Archie’s surprise visitors usually came at night. Maybe, just maybe, Ruby had decided to talk with him after all. He opened his door, completely taken aback to find Regina standing there, looking very unhappy.
“Madam Mayor?” he asked, managing to keep his composure. “To what do I owe this pleasure?” Pleasure might not be the best word to use, but it got his point across without offending her.

This Emma woman wouldn’t leave town? Well fine then, Regina would make her. She has already planted the thought of Henry’s therapy in the blonde’s mind so now all she has to do is get Dr. Hopper on board. She knocks on his door and waits for him to come open it. “Madam Mayor?” he asks, seeming surprised to see her. “To what do I owe this pleasure?” She pushes in past him and strides to the center of the room, giving herself the dominance in this situation.
“Emma Swan has stayed in town,” she reveals. “She is going to come by and ask to see Henry’s files and I want you to give them to her.” Of course the cricket will probably argue a bit with her on this front, but he should be pretty easy to convince. She has several methods at her disposal after all.

“She is going to come by and ask to see Henry’s files and I want you to give them to her.”
“What?” he asked, completely taken aback. She wanted him to do what?! “I’m sorry, Madam Mayor, but that would be breaking the law. I’m afraid I cannot give out patients’ files to anyone.” Surely Regina knew that. But, wait … “Why do you want me to give Emma the files?” From what he’d seen in the newspaper and heard around town, Regina seemed to want to make things difficult for Emma. Now, she just wanted to hand Emma information about Henry? Something was certainly off.

“What?” the cricket asks in disbelief. She sighs in exasperation. Really, for once couldn’t someone make her job just a tad bit easier? “I’m sorry, Madam Mayor, but that would be breaking the law. I’m afraid I cannot give out patients’ files to anyone.” Breaking the law? Who does he think she is? Regina is the law in this town. “Why do you want me to give Emma the files?” Finally, a something useful if not still idiotic comes out of the bug’s mouth.
“I have reason to believe that Emma Swan is going to hurt my son,” she says. After all, she probably wants to take the only person that matters to her away, and taking him away would be hurting him. Who knows what the woman who gave him up for adoption would do to him once she got bored with the responsibilities of taking care of a child? She has to put a stop to this. “She wants to take him away from me and I won’t allow that. You need to give her the files and then say she stole them. I’ll handle the rest.” There. Hopefully Archie would play along now. Otherwise she’ll have to threaten him and while it could be fun if word got back to Henry he’d be mad. No, this was the best way. Hopefully the cricket agrees.

Archie
“I have reason to believe that Emma Swan is going to hurt my son.” No, Regina must be mistaken. There was no way Emma would ever purposely hurt Henry. From the little he’d seen of her, he’d learned Henry’s birth mother seemed to genuinely care for the boy.
“She wants to take him away from me and I won’t allow that.” Ah, so Regina was referring to emotional hurt, which could very well happen. Henry already doubted Regina, and it was quite possible that Emma’s presence would make him certain in his belief that she was the Evil Queen. It was certainly causing Regina to go to more extreme measures. “You need to give her the files and then say she stole them. I’ll handle the rest.”
“That’s still illegal,” he argued weakly, but honestly he could see where the mayor was coming from. She just wanted to protect her son. All it took was a glare from her to weaken him completely. He really didn’t want Henry to get hurt, after all. “Very well Madam Mayor. I still can’t see how this will help Henry, though.”

“That’s still illegal,” he argues as though he thinks that matters. “Very well Madam Mayor. I still can’t see how this will help Henry, though.” He can’t see how this will help Henry huh? Well, that doesn’t matter. He doesn’t need to see how it will help, he just needs to do it.
“I said leave the rest to me,” she snaps at him before pushing past him again to get to the door. She turns around to give him one final scathing look. “When Ms. Swan comes here later and asks for the files, give them to her,” she orders. She can see from the look on Archie’s face that he’ll do it so then she slams the door and walks away. She doesn’t have time to wait around. She has a town to run after all and that will be much easier once she gets rid of Henry’s birth mom. And with the help of Archie, that should be much sooner than this Emma Swan was hoping.

Archie
“I said leave the rest to me,” Regina snapped, causing him to wince slightly from the force of it. “When Ms. Swan comes here later and asks for the files, give them to her,” Archie sighed, looking down at the ground but he didn’t argue. Honestly, he was too terrified of Regina to oppose her. Getting in the way of a mother trying to protect her son would have been one of the worst decisions of his life.
Regina didn’t wait for an answer; simply leaving and slamming the door behind her. Archie resigned himself to his fate, knowing he’d have to trick Emma and break laws to do so. It was a shame; he could tell Henry’s birth mother had honorable intentions. But wait, was he overreacting? Why would Emma come to talk to him about Henry? Surely she’d know he could tell her nothing. That was it, she wouldn’t come, she had no reason to, and then Regina couldn’t get mad at him for not forking over the files.
Archie glanced at his watch, grimacing as he realized he was running late. He’d have to eat his muffin on the way. “Come on, Pongo,” he called, hooking the leash back up to his Dalmatian. He was going to drop him off at the vets, which doubled as a pet daycare. Archie had yet to introduce Pongo to Lily, mainly because he didn’t want to overwhelm her, although he had the feeling she’d love to meet the pooch.
Making sure to walk briskly so he wouldn’t be terribly late, Archie left his office and the knowledge that he might have to betray Emma behind. After all, the blonde would be smart enough to know he couldn’t tell her much about his treatment of Henry.

*Archie, Errol and Lily enter from the main street*
"We're here," he said, feeling a sense of relief as they entered his office. It was designed to be calming, and this morning had been anything but. "Why don't we just sit down for a bit and take it easy? I could make some tea, if you'd like," he suggested. Perhaps the room would be enough to soothe Lily's nerves though, he knew it was for several of his patients. Of course, any new place could wind Lily up; hopefully she'd get used to his office quickly, for her sake but also for his and Errol's.

"We're here," "Why don't we just sit down for a bit and take it easy? I could make some tea, if you'd like,"
Lily's heart was still racing as they entered the office so she gratefully took Archie's suggestion, sinking into a comfortable looking chair. From there, she quietly took in her new surroundings as she attempted to bring her pulse back to a normal speed- assuring herself that there was no way Mr. Gold had decided to follow them to continue whatever that had been on the street. When an image of the pawn shop proprietor bursting into the room, cane drawn like an maniacal knight, entered her mind, she resisted the urge to ask Archie to lock the door immediately. Rather she took a breath and examined the soothing combination of pale yellow and dark green that adorned the walls.
Finally, after several seconds, she acknowledged Archie's offer, "Some tea would be great. Do you have chamomile?" Without waiting for his response, she continued on with the real question pressing her mind, "Is every new interaction I find myself in going to be that...terrifying?"

Archie had been right; his office was working its magic. He watched as Lily’s breath calmed down. She was still shaken up, but she was gaining control. Archie could feel himself relaxing too. His office was able to calm him as well, not just due to the soothing décor, but also its familiarity. He would need the calm to help Lily deal with her first encounter besides him or Errol.
"Some tea would be great. Do you have chamomile?" "Is every new interaction I find myself in going to be that...terrifying?"
“No, it won’t,” he promised quickly. It hadn’t occurred to him that Lily would assume most people were like Mr. Gold. But, since she’d not met many people, it made sense she’d jump to that conclusion. “Mr. Gold is more … intimidating than most.” It really was rather unfortunate he’d been the first person Lily had met. Archie wished things had run smoother, but that just wasn’t the case. “Most people will be friendlier. Don't worry.” Hopefully, the next person she met wasn’t Mayor Mills.
“I have chamomile. I’ll make you a cup.” He walked away from her, only to get to the machine he used to make tea while in his office. It was small enough to be out of the way, unless he needed it as he did now.

“No, it won’t,” “Mr. Gold is more … intimidating than most.” “Most people will be friendlier. Don't worry.”
"Well that's a relief. I'm not sure I could handle another disaster like that!" Lily cracked a smile to support the joking tone of her voice, though her words were one hundred percent true. She'd been wondering if maybe her mother had been at least a little right this whole time and maybe she couldn't handle herself outside of her own walls. But she had, mostly, kept a hold of herself with Mr. Gold and if he was the toughest person she may run into in the town then it could only get easier from there. At least, she hoped.
“I have chamomile. I’ll make you a cup.”
"Thank you, Archie." she responded gratefully. The tea would do wonders for her lingering nerves. Feeling much calmer already, Lily stood up, intending to examine the office more closely as Archie prepared her tea. She rolled her eyes, amused when she caught sight of Errol crouched by a small children's area. Apparently he'd been telling the truth about Dr. Seuss. 'He'd be an amazing father.'
She hoped neither man caught the twinge of pink she felt flush her cheeks.
Not wanting to disturb what was obviously very important reading, Lily turned her attention back to the red haired man. Though he'd been working with her for a few months now, she realized that she actually knew very little about him. 'Well Lily, you wanted to learn how to carry on a conversation. May as well start practicing.'
"So Archie, how long have you been in Storybrooke?"

"Well that's a relief. I'm not sure I could handle another disaster like that!"
Archie tried not to wince at her words as he mentally tried to figure out who he should keep her away from for now. So long as they didn’t go near the diner or her office, they shouldn’t have to worry about Mayor Mills, but was there anyone else in town that would be difficult for Lily to interact with? No one came to mind, so Archie would just have to hope his memory was serving him well.
It didn’t take long for the machine to get going; it would just take a couple minutes to finish. "Thank you, Archie." He turned away from the machine to face her.
“It’s why I have it,” he admitted. He preferred earl grey to chamomile, but he knew the calming properties that tea possessed. He kept some around for his patients’ sakes. The calmer they were, the more likely they would be able to solve some of their problems.
He noticed her turn red, and wasn’t quite sure why. It didn’t seem to indicate she was nervous, though, so he didn’t comment. If she was embarrassed for any reason, he didn’t want to draw attention to it and make it worse.
"So Archie, how long have you been in Storybrooke?"
That was a rather good question. Perhaps too good of a question; Archie was honestly at a loss for the answer. “I’ve been here for quite a while. For as long as I can remember.” It almost seemed like, for his entire existence, he’d been a psychiatrist in Storybrooke. He knew that was impossible, but that was what it felt like. “I’ll be a great tour guide for you,” he joked lightly.

“I’ve been here for quite a while. For as long as I can remember.”
"Wow, that's a long time!" Lily exclaimed in a teasing tone. "That's about as long as I can remember being alone in that house." Suddenly it didn't seem so funny anymore. But Lily made a valiant effort to shake it off.
“I’ll be a great tour guide for you,”
"I can't wait to see it all, Archie." And Lily was surprised to realize that she meant that. As freaked out as the morning had made her, she wanted to see everything. She wanted to meet everyone. She felt ready to be a regular human being with not strange quirks. Now if only her mind would cooperate. "So. after we stop here, where are we going to go next?"

"Wow, that's a long time” "That's about as long as I can remember being alone in that house."
He frowned slightly at her remark. She had people now; Errol and him. But she’d been alone for so long. If only someone had managed to find her sooner.
"I can't wait to see it all, Archie." "So. after we stop here, where are we going to go next?"
She was still optimistic and ready to face what was next. This was hard for her, he knew, but she was facing it not only bravely, but energetically.
“I thought we could go to the park. I also told my friend Marco that we might stop by sometime today.” Marco was friendly; a perfect person for Lily to meet. However, he was going to leave the decision up to her. “Which would you prefer to do next? We do have time to do both.”

“I thought we could go to the park. I also told my friend Marco that we might stop by sometime today.” “Which would you prefer to do next? We do have time to do both.”
Lily blanched at the prospect of having to make a decision like this on her own. Decisiveness, they'd discovered, was not her strong suit and there was much riding on this next step. What if she made the wrong choice?
Not that Archie was looking for a right or wrong answer. Of course he wasn't. So many things could go wrong in both scenarios and with her choosing, what happened next would be her own fault. Though she'd also made the very big choice to come out here at all and so, in a way, she supposed anything that followed would be her fault anyway. But that was somehow not comforting.
She could pick the park, where they could run into Mr. Gold again. And he'd have her or Errol or both of them thrown into the pokey for stealing his tiara and she'd be locked up. Behind bars but without her paints or kitchen or Errol. According to what she read in some old fifties mystery novels, the pokey was not a place she'd want to be.
Or they could run into someone even worse than Mr. Gold.
The thought made Lily shiver.
Picking Archie's friend seemed the safer choice of the two. She was sure that any friend of Archie's must be as kind and understanding as the ginger haired man. But what if in her lack of conversation skills, she made a big fool of herself? What if she accidentally insulted him or she was clumsy and broke something or what if she had a panic attack right there and he thought she was as crazy as she suspected. What if she couldn't keep her composure and made a mess of things and had to excuse herself. And she'd go outside and Mr. Gold would be there and he'd have her thrown into the pokey and-
"I-I don't know. What do you think is best, Archie?" She'd copped out. She knew it. She knew that Archie knew it. And she somewhat suspected that even though she'd asked Archie's opinion, she would ultimately have to make this decision anyway.

He watched as she made herself more and more nervous. She was getting so worked up over this choice. He understood she was nervous, and that this must seem daunting to her. Still, he’d hoped it wouldn’t have made her quite this nervous. He needed to remember not to push her beyond her capabilities. She was handling everything wonderfully today, but that didn’t mean she was suddenly ready to take on the world free of fear. They needed to go slow. But, that didn’t mean that she was done growing for today.
"I-I don't know. What do you think is best, Archie?"
He wasn’t going to let her completely off the hook with this. She could still do it, he knew she could, and she would feel better for having completed this herself. “Well, it depends. The park is very nice this time of year. It’s great weather to be outdoors in. It has some paths to follow, and plenty of benches. At Marco’s, we wouldn’t be outdoors. But, he is very friendly, someone you would enjoy talking too. It really depends on what you feel would be the best for you right now.”
If she had any questions, he would gladly answer them. He’d let her take some time to think about which option appealed to her the most. But, this was a decision she was going to have to make on her own. He wouldn’t do it for her. Only she knew the choice that was right for her.

Yup, wasn't getting out of that one so easily. She did appreciate Archie highlighting the good things about each choice. It did some to alleviate the negative associations she had been attaching to them. But still they lingered. So in thought was she on her choice, she barely noticed as she rose from the chair and began to pace.
She did think that she would like to meet Marco but she didn't know if she was quite up to meeting another new person just yet. Not after the scene in the street. The image of Mr. Gold would probably keep her awake at night for the next month.
The park sounded more appealing especially after all the time she spent cooped up inside. It was the option she was leaning more towards. Except...
"If we went to the park, do you think...." she trailed off, her nerves riling at just the thought of mentioning his name. Like somehow just saying it could summon him. Her voice dropped to a whisper, just in case. "Do you think we might run into Mr. Gold again?"

She was willing to think of a different answer. He sat back, not staring at her so she didn’t feel rushed in any way. Lily should be completely free to take her time with this.
"If we went to the park, do you think...." "Do you think we might run into Mr. Gold again?"
Ah, so that had been part of the problem. She had been worried they would run into Mr. Gold again. Archie couldn’t blame her. Gold could be extremely intimidating when he wanted to be.
“I think it would be very unlikely for us to run into him at the park. Mr. Gold is most likely at his shop right now. We can do our best to avoid him, but I don’t think it will be an issue.” Archie didn’t want to promise. He couldn’t read minds, after all. For all he knew, Gold could suddenly decide to take a stroll in the park. But, it was a very unlikely situation. Most likely, they wouldn’t have to worry about running into him or Regina at the park. He wasn’t just hoping things would go smoothly there, he was fairly certain they would. “So, to the park, then?” he questioned. Her answer would probably be yes, especially since Archie had tried to reassure her that they wouldn’t run into Mr. Gold.

“I think it would be very unlikely for us to run into him at the park. Mr. Gold is most likely at his shop right now. We can do our best to avoid him, but I don’t think it will be an issue.”
It wasn't until the sigh of relief when Lily noticed she had been holding her breath. But normal breathing did wonders and that, combined with Archie's comforting words, were enough to bring her back to a relaxed state. Well, as relaxed as Lily ever got when she wasn't painting. Archie seemed to take note of the change and her likely decision.
“So, to the park, then?”
"To the park," she replied after a long moment full of reconsideration, in typical Lily fashion. To lighten the moment she sent a pointed look at the uncharacteristically quiet former thief and newly discovered Dr. Seuss fanatic. "That is, if Errol isn't too caught up in his reading..."

He had done his best to get her to this point but Errol had a sinking feeling that if he opened his mouth the good Doctor would lose his chance and this space would be ruined for Lily once and for all. It needed to stay a happy place. So it seemed like a perfect time to catch up on some... light reading. After a few moments he knew it was hopeless, the man kept losing his focus as his attention shifted to the conversation going on behind him. He maintain the illusion as best he could. Let Archie work his magic, right?
Then there was silence... "That is, if Errol isn't too caught up in his reading..." The book slapped shut in his hands and he perked up instantly. "Reading? No no, I'm good! Really." She was expecting him to chime in, but on what? He searched the edge of his thoughts for the important little bits he could recall. 'Where to from here, Marco's, the park (Lovely time of year!), Mr Gold's shop? (He had to have heard wrong!), the park again.' Errol wouldn't keep her waiting, he decided to run with that last one and hoped he had chosen wisely. "The park... the park, yes! I think that would be stupendous!" With a smile he rose from the table and gave a soft yet enthusiastic exclamation to punctuate his sentence.

Lily had to laugh as Errol's reaction reminded her somewhat of herself as a child when Mother had discovered her sneaking cookies from the jar in the kitchen. Though Mother had not been quite so quick to let such indiscretions go. She laced her fingers through his and gave his hand a little squeeze.
"Well then, I guess it is decided. We are going to the park." Letting go of Errol's hand, Lily boldly took a few steps towards the door. She was ready to show that she could take on this next step. But her literal steps faltered when she realized one small problem with her leading the way. "Um, how do we get to the park?"

Hopping up out of his seat he shot to the door with as much calm as he could. Errol wanted to make a good impression but not startle Lily with so many sudden movements. He pulled open the door and dipped into a bow. "Right this way please. Oh you're going to love it at the park, I'll have my driver bring the car around and we will be off in style!"
Archie was looking at him with a mix of confusion and terror at the spectacle he was making. It seemed his expression was suggesting Wayne didn't know the meaning of the word subtle. Which was of course ridiculous. But as he cleared his throat he changed tactics. "Or we could just walk, its only a couple blocks from here. Pongo?" The dog let out a single bark of protest so Errol stuck his chin into the air and walked out ahead of the dog making sure to stand by Lily's side as they exited the building.

Gabriella had been up early and walking from business to business, making use of public announcement boards or clearing with the owner the posting of the fliers she'd printed when she'd gotten home late last night. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
Will's Itty Bitty Wonderworld has suffered minor fire damage. William Robinson has been a kind and giving member of the community. Looking for volunteers who would like to show the same kind and giving spirit by helping with repairs and refurbishment so that he has a home and store to return to when released from hospital.
Costs are covered. Supplies and paints have been purchased. Additional tools and paint supplies would be helpful but it is your dedicated time and work that would be most appreciated.
Work to begin noon Friday and continue at all hours throughout the weekend until completed. Volunteers are welcome to report for whatever times are convenient.
Thank you.
