"Thank you, I made them myself,"
Lily froze for a second at the unfamiliar voice, once again her uncomfortable meeting with Mr. Gold playing through her mind at a breakneck speed that did nothing to diminish its every awkward moment. But she took a deep, hopefully imperceptible, breath and counted to five- as ten seemed too long to wait. Then, her hand slipping around Errol's arm, she turned to face the voice. When she did, the tense feeling that gripped her began to slip away at the sight of a warm smile and twinkling, open eyes.
"We celebrated Mother Superior's birthday here yesterday. Leroy graciously helped me hang them from the trees," "I'm Sister Astrid," "though Astrid would do just fine."
"It's nice to meet you, Si- um, Astrid." Lily replied, reaching out to accept Sister's handshake. After a beat of silence, she realized that she'd neglected to introduce herself and words rushed from her mouth in no particular order. "Lily. Is me. I mean-"
Breathe, Lily. Breathe.
"My name is Lily." She glanced at the somewhat surly looking man standing beside Astrid- Leroy?- and briefly wondered if she should shake his hand too. But the moment for that seemed past and he didn't look overly touchy-feely so she let her hand fall to her side. "She must have loved it! You both did such a wonderful job. I've never seen anything quite like it."
Of course she hadn't. This was her first time outside her own front door. But she decided not to cheapen her compliment by adding that.
"Are there often parties like that here in the park?"

"My name is Lily."
"It's nice to meet you, Lily." Her voice was soft and as sweet as her demeanor portrayed. There wasn't even the slightest hint of a mean bone in her body. In fact, most who knew her thought her to be too innocent, too sweet-natured and too passive to even anger.
"She must have loved it! You both did such a wonderful job. I've never seen anything quite like it."
Astrid beamed at the compliment, looking up at the stars and watching the glitter send tiny little spots of lights dancing as the breeze turned them. She folded her hands in front of her. "Thank you. It means a lot to hear that," she said, sounding a bit shy as a slight shade of pink bloomed on her cheeks. Those were the words she'd wished Mother Superior had said but she knew the brief study followed by a firm nod in her direction was the extent of Mother Superior's show of appreciation of such "frivolities" as she usually referred to Astrid's creative projects.
Astrid bumped Leroy with her shoulder then angled her head toward Lily to remind him of his manners. The lady had just given a compliment that included him and he should also be thanking her.
"Are there often parties like that here in the park?"
Astrid nodded. "When the weather is nice, I do see a lot of people picnicking and the townspeople will sometimes have events. The Sisters of Saint Meissa many times dedicate their time to decorating and will usually have a charity booth. I get to attend those. Well, I get to work at the booth, that is," she said excitedly. "The next big one coming up will be the Miner's Day celebration. Our booth sells candles in honor of the day." She chuckled before confessing, "I've been spending so much of my days making candles in preparation that I'll sometimes dream I'm making them!"

"Thank you, I made them myself,", a sudden voice from behind made him stop in his plan to leave. A female voice he remembered quite well and that was able to conjure a smile on his grumpy face, and that even early in the morning.
"We celebrated Mother Superior's birthday here yesterday. Leroy graciously helped me hang them from the trees," Another gawky looking smile appeared on Leroy's face, when Astrid was giving one to him too. If anyone from the people around were really knowing him and his usual manners, they for sure would have turned apostate, and that was in the presence of a nun. Damn, Leroy, she was a nun.
Leroy made every effort to let that gawky smile disappear from his face.
"I'm Sister Astrid,", she then turned her attention back at the couple next to them. "though Astrid would do just fine."
"It's nice to meet you, Si- um, Astrid.", the nervous-acting girl replied with a handshake to Astrid. "Lily. Is me. I mean-" Her nervousity seemed to intensify. What was the matter with her? Could there really exist a more unsocial person in town than he was? "My name is Lily." Then the girl suddenly glanced in his direction. Leroy gave her a blank expression, not exactly intentionally, it just was the way he was looking at people waiting for any kind of convention.
"It's nice to meet you, Lily."
"She must have loved it! You both did such a wonderful job. I've never seen anything quite like it.", the girl lastly continued, again not gaining any reaction from Leroy to that compliment. Instead he was just standing in the middle of a conversation he didn't feel comfortable with at all. How did this scene happen all of a sudden?
"Thank you. It means a lot to hear that," Leroy looked back at Astrid out from the corner of his eyes. Her cheeks became a slight shade of pink. That was kinda cute. Once again Leroy banished the sudden returning smile. Nun.
Then all of a sudden a bump on his shoulder yanked him out of his passive position he had occupied in this whole scene. But instead of getting the intention Leroy just gave her an asking look. The girl opposite him then thankfully helped bailing him out of this by raise a word again.
"Are there often parties like that here in the park?"
"When the weather is nice, I do see a lot of people picnicking and the townspeople will sometimes have events. The Sisters of Saint Meissa many times dedicate their time to decorating and will usually have a charity booth. I get to attend those. Well, I get to work at the booth, that is,""The next big one coming up will be the Miner's Day celebration. Our booth sells candles in honor of the day.""I've been spending so much of my days making candles in preparation that I'll sometimes dream I'm making them!"
Again Leroy caught himself smiling at Astrid, while she passionately talked about that charity stuff she was doing.

The nun spoke with such excitement that it was nearly impossible for Lily not to get caught up in it, her nerves swept away for the moment. "Miner's Day! That sounds fun, what is it?" Her courage bolstered, she charged on, "If you ever need any help, Errol and I would be glad to lend a hand. Even if it isn't with making candles. I mean, I love making candles so I'd be glad to help with that too if you need it but I'm also an artist and I'm pretty good with a paintbrush. It would be nice to get involved."

Errol stood by Lily's side, her arm tucked between his. It was the least he could do to help her feel a sense of reassurance. But he had to hand it to her too, she was doing very well for herself so he didn't want to break her stride. His mind began to wander somewhat. The man in front of them hadn't said a word, much like himself. He kept throwing a dopey smile at the nun and it was making Wayne start to wonder. And the shorter fella could not possibly be wearing any more layers. When the weather broke, probably a denim guy...
His internal alarms started to go off. "Errol and I would be glad to lend a hand. Even if it isn't with making candles. I mean, I love making candles so I'd be glad to help with that too if you need it but I'm also an artist and I'm pretty good with a paintbrush. It would be nice to get involved." He had just been volunteered for something. Charity work? Oh boy. "Errol would? Huh that's funny, whose Errol? Anybody know Errol? Not me, you'll have to introduce me to him sometime. Hi! I'm... mum mum mum, Jeans! Jean. Eugene. Yeah that's me." Whatever, he would roll with it. He was glad he hadn't been formally introduced yet. They should probably move on he thought.

"Miner's Day! That sounds fun, what is it?"
Astrid's enthusiasm matched Lily's, no doubt overwhelming the men with the force of so much bubbling excitement on something most would find a rather mundane subject.
"It's a celebration that stems from an old tradition. The nuns used to make candles and trade them with the miners for coal. Now we sell the candles during the celebration as a fundraiser."

Astrid hardly took note of Errol's joking, as she assumed it was. In her excitement, she steamrolled over the last of his words. "Oh, that would be wonderful!" She reached out and gripped one of each of their hands, giving them a quick thankful squeeze before clapping her hands together and holding them over her heart. "Perhaps your gift of art could help spruce up the candles. They are rather plain. With an added artistic flair, I'm sure we could sell a record number!"
Astrid was beaming at Lily, nearly hopping from foot to foot with enthusiasm at the thought.

"Miner's Day! That sounds fun, what is it?"
And so the conversation went on...
"It's a celebration that stems from an old tradition. The nuns used to make candles and trade them with the miners for coal. Now we sell the candles during the celebration as a fundraiser."
As uncomfortable as he felt with it, Astrid's angel-like voice made it almost comfortable for the time being. Angel-like voice... God, Leroy, where did that coming from?...
"If you ever need any help, Errol and I would be glad to lend a hand." Leroy threw a short look at the girl's male companion, who seemed to find this conversation not actually less uncomfortable. women, right?, he mentally remarked to him. Well, at least he would have, if he wasn't seemingly even more unsocial than this guy's lass. So Leroy looked back at the two women, or pretended to do so, still a blank expression on his face. "Even if it isn't with making candles. I mean, I love making candles so I'd be glad to help with that too if you need it but I'm also an artist and I'm pretty good with a paintbrush. It would be nice to get involved."
"Errol would? Huh that's funny, whose Errol? Anybody know Errol? Not me, you'll have to introduce me to him sometime. Hi! I'm... mum mum mum, Jeans! Jean. Eugene. Yeah that's me."
Leroy let out a quite sigh. Gosh, this guy really thought to be funny, didn't he? ...
"Oh, that would be wonderful!""Perhaps your gift of art could help spruce up the candles. They are rather plain. With an added artistic flair, I'm sure we could sell a record number!"
Oh how cute she was, Leroy caught himself thinking again, while watching Astrid from the side, nearly hopping from foot to foot out of enthusiasm.

Lily answered her companion with a light jab to his ribs. "Eugene! I mean, Errol!" she chastised under her breath, the sing song tone of her voice undermining her attempt.
"Oh, that would be wonderful!" "Perhaps your gift of art could help spruce up the candles. They are rather plain. With an added artistic flair, I'm sure we could sell a record number!"
Lily was surprised when the nun took her hand, but not unpleasantly. "I've just been reading about a method to paint on candle wax. Now seems as good of time as any to give it a try! I can come up with a few designs and maybe stop by the convent one day so you can choose which ones you like best." Though Lily had been doing pretty well, the shyness crept back into her voice as she finished her sentence. Did she just possibly make a new friend? Or did she just awkwardly invite herself over? She reached out for Errol's hand, seeking the reassuring warmth she typically found there.

Now Leroy really wasn't able anymore to retain a sigh of annoyance. Not only was he tired as hell, as he was just coming from his nightshift at the hospital, also was this conversation leading into a direction he wanted to be part of by no means! It was one thing to listen to only one woman talking about candles and flashing stars, but to listen to two of that sort was too much for him.
He threw another short look into the other guy's direction, before he interrupted the lady's talk. "Well, that's all nice, but I really have to hit the hay, okay?" With a shier look on his face he addressed Astrid directly. "If you need any more help, uh... just say so." He had another look at the two watchers around, which made him feel a little foolish all of a sudden, so he didn't come up with more than an actually grumpier as intended sounding: "Bye". With quick steps he left these awkward situation behind, his eyes rolling about his own behavior, once he was out of their sight.

"Oh, I would love that! Stop by any time you'd like," Astrid reassured.
She was still beaming, excited over this newest development. The candles would be beautiful, she was sure, but it was the thought of having a visitor, a potential friend, that really put the smile on her face. It was strange how lonely she felt sometimes, despite the fact she lived in a place full of her fellow sisters. They were all kind but tended to devote their time to their calling which left little or no time for personal connections. The fact they found her to be odd and perhaps a touch out of place amongst them didn't help matters.
"Well, that's all nice, but I really have to hit the hay, okay?" "If you need any more help, uh... just say so." "Bye".
Leroy looked uncomfortable and the worry that she had caused it had deflated her enthusiasm. "Thank you, Leroy," she called after him. As she watched him walk away, she caught site of the clock tower and was surprised how much time had gone by. "Oh goodness, I should get going. Mother Superior is expecting me back soon with the shopping!" she exclaimed in a rush. Astrid always seemed to find herself upsetting Mother Superior by accident so it was best she avoided it when she could. "It was lovely to meet you, Lily, Errol. I'll see you soon, Lily!" she said excitedly with a wave as she rushed off.

Gabriella had been up early and walking from business to business, making use of public announcement boards or clearing with the owner the posting of the fliers she'd printed when she'd gotten home late last night. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
Will's Itty Bitty Wonderworld has suffered minor fire damage. William Robinson has been a kind and giving member of the community. Looking for volunteers who would like to show the same kind and giving spirit by helping with repairs and refurbishment so that he has a home and store to return to when released from hospital.
Costs are covered. Supplies and paints have been purchased. Additional tools and paint supplies would be helpful but it is your dedicated time and work that would be most appreciated.
Work to begin noon Friday and continue at all hours throughout the weekend until completed. Volunteers are welcome to report for whatever times are convenient.
Thank you.

Kitt had walked into town like he had every day for what felt like his entire life. Slowly he made his way through the Town Square Park soaking in what the day had to offer so far, his attitude very happy go lucky. As he was making his way through he noticed a new flyer on the noticeboards.
"Work to begin noon Friday and continue at all hours throughout the weekend until completed. Volunteers are welcome to report for whatever times are convenient." Kitt read the flyer under his breath. Kitt had thrived doing things for this community and was always helping out with after school programmes for the school so this was just one more way he could help and was happy to lend the hand.
