4 8 15 16 23 42! Yes, this episode was great and finally gave me an idea what all this numbers are about!
Lol, I look forward to when you have them memorized like me!
My mom has them memorized. I'm so proud of her! *wipes away tear* Lol!
Oh yah, what is the place the numbers are written on in the end scene? Is that the porthole they've found before, but weren't able to open yet?
Yup, that was the side of what's known as the hatch! Holy crap!!! Don't open that thing, you guys!
Okay and I had almost a whole thing written out a few days ago and I fell asleep at my computer! So I'm going to paste and continue that now.
4 out of 5 stars from me! The revelation at the end alone made me want to give it a 5 but I held back. So hard, lol!
I take notes while I watch and man, I'm telling you, I think I nearly ran out of ink just trying to jot down the number sightings flying left and right! So now you all finally get why I've been making note of them all! I remember when this first aired, everyone was introduced to the importance of the numbers and we all went back to our DVRs and rewatched the whole show so far, hunting for the numbers!
I also tried to jot down all the mentions of bad luck that happened and after getting down mostly Hurley's stuff, I just ran out of steam. It's insane! For Hurley, his grandpa Tito died of a heart attack, Father Aguilar was struck by lightening when a freak thunderstorm came in during Tito's funeral, Diego's (his brother) wife left him for another woman, his mom broke her ankle just as the house he bought her started going up in flames and when he goes to call 911, the police pull up and mistakenly arrest him, sneaker factory he owns in Canada burns down killing around 8... something people, and as Hurley was talking to his accountant, some guy had jumped or fallen off the building and goes flying past the window. Yah, I don't care what you believe, that is a heapin' pile of bad luck!!
4 8 15 16 23 42.... Yes, I and millions of others have played these numbers in the lottery despite what those numbers have brought to the people on the show, lol! I remember there was a little blurb in my magazine about it. They'd found that in one drawing, there were somewhere in the thousands of people who played them. I remember it saying ""Um, hello, do you people watch the show?"" Lol, yup, but we're crazy and gonna play them anyway.
How creepy are those numbers? Overheard by a two guys while serving in the U.S. Navy, a stunningly boring job of monitoring radio frequencies when they suddenly pop up on repeat. Eventually, it landed one in the loony bin and the other to use as a guess of how many beans in a huge jar right to the bean, leading to him eating his gun when convinced it plagued those around him with bad luck and death. Overheard by Danielle and her crew, leading them to investigate and shipwreck on that island. Branded on the side of the hatch. Hurley using them to win the lotto and to travel to Sydney to find the other guy who'd heard the numbers got him traveling home on the very plane that crashed on the very island the numbers had originated from. Crazy random happenstance or something more?
There are a couple of great character connections which I'll be adding to the Character Connections thread. #1, the lottery girl reading the numbers is the same woman that Sawyer had brought to his room at the beginning of the previous episode. #2, Hurley is the majority shareholder of a box company in Tustin.... the very place that Locke works! In a way, Hurley is Locke's boss.
They don't even know it!
Danielle made mention of this Black Rock again. What is it?? I loved the whole Hurley/Rousseau scene. So funny and especially love the end of it where he totally bear hugs the heck out of Danielle.
I really loved the Locke/Claire scenes and had no clue what he was building until he lifted it to turn around at the end. That is so sweet and thoughtful and Claire was grateful not only for the cradle but to be included in doing something. So great! Happy Birthday, Claire.
Omg, the scene where Hurley and Charlie stop to fight while they look for Danielle and then suddenly stop talking after the gun shot was hilarious! They're calmly standing there and Charlie's like, "Was that a gun shot?" Lol!! You know, it's probably more realistic than running right away unless you're used to the sound of gunfire and used to being shot at. I think I'd kinda be like that too at first. More of a "What was that noise?" and "I think something just wooshed passed me.... wait, is someone
shooting at me?"
I love how things just come around nicely in the show. Another fine example of this is how after Hurley said he used the numbers to win the lotto, Leonard said, "You shouldn't have done that! You've opened the box!" and at the very end, the numbers are engraved on the hatch, a sort of other kind of "box" that they're trying to open and now I'm like, "DON'T OPEN THAT BOX!!"

The Hurley and Danielle scene
Lenny: You used those numbers to play the lottery?
Hurley: Uh, -- yeah.
Lenny: Well, you shouldn't have done that. You've opened the box!
Hurley:
That thing in the woods, maybe it's a monster, maybe it's a pissed off giraffe, I don't know!
Hurley: (to Sayid after returning from Danielle) She says 'hey.'
Charlie: I just told you the biggest secret of my life. I thought you'd want to reciprocate.
Hurley: Okay. Back home I'm worth 156 million dollars.
Charlie: Fine. Don't tell me.
Hurley: Dude.
Charlie: I bare my soul, and all I get is bloody jokes!
