"My supervisor's gonna' be so pissed that I'm taking all this time off...."
"You just need a good excuse, like a horrible and traumatic plane crash," he said.
"So do you think your wife is worried about you? Or, y'know, life partner?"
"Life partner? Good navigation of the subject," he said, smiling. "She's here with me. She was on the plane too."

"Life partner? Good navigation of the subject ... She's here with me. She was on the plane too."
"Oh, good. That must be a relief for you," Mia said. "How long have you been married?" She wandered near the treeline to pick up another armful of firewood, noticing an occupied Heidi along the way. "Hey, Heidi, no slackin' on the job." She added a smile to let the girl know she was kidding.

"Oh, good. That must be a relief for you, How long have you been married?"
Cyrus nodded. He had felt relief that Lena had survived, but at the same time, her survival seemed inevitable. He knew her as a survivor, be it through hard times or plane crashes. "Six years," he said, sticking to the story. "And uh, zero plane crashes in those six years."

"Hey, Heidi, no slackin' on the job."
I smiled in amusement. "Just taking one of my fifteen minute coffee breaks, boss. I'm entitled to two of 'em, ya know." I pulled the last splinter free and fell in line close behind them, unintentionally hearing a piece of their conversation.
"Six years," "And uh, zero plane crashes in those six years."
I usually didn't interrupt other people's conversations but I also usually had trouble passing up an opportunity to make a joke. "I think you might want to do a recount because I can think of at least one plane crash," I said with a grin.

"I think you might want to do a recount because I can think of at least one plane crash,"
"Ah, but isn't this one of those things that brings couples closer together?" Mia asked after Heidi's comment. "Certainly cheaper than therapy, and the scenery's better. Heidi, have you met Cyrus?" she added, shifting into introduction mode. "He's either a Federal agent or a sunglass spokesmodel -- I haven't worked it out yet."

I chuckled. "Or maybe a Federal agent posing as a sunglass spokesmodel and you just blew his cover." I held out my hand to Cyrus. "Hi, nice to meet you."

"I think you might want to do a recount because I can think of at least one plane crash,"
"Well, I meant up 'til now," said Cyrus. "This is our first. It's all very special."
"He's either a Federal agent or a sunglass spokesmodel -- I haven't worked it out yet."
"What, I can't moonlight?" Cyrus lifted his hands in mock protest.
"Or maybe a Federal agent posing as a sunglass spokesmodel and you just blew his cover."
"Yeah, shit. I guess I have to kill you all now," he replied. "Uh, but probably later. It's too hot for Tarantino antics."
"Hi, nice to meet you."
Cyrus smiled and took her hand. "Pleasure's all mine, Heidi."

I smiled as I shook his hand, then looked back at Mia. "Speaking of therapy, I'm sure there'll be a lot therapist happy for all the new business once we all get home. Question is, how exactly do you tell someone about those traumatizing moments that the Jurassic Park-like thing knocked down trees as it headed toward your camp without coming off as completely crazy?"

"As long as Oceanic is paying for it, I guess we can say whatever we want and they'll be obligated to believe it. Of course, I talk to corpses all day so I've never exactly been Miss Well-adjusted," she said with a cursory smile. She noted that Cyrus hadn't admitted to being a Fed, but he hadn't exactly denied it either. He did stand a little too apart from things to be law enforcement, but maybe he was preoccupied with keeping his wife safe instead of a bunch of strangers.
"So, Heidi, your friend with the...uh...late fiance--how's she doing?" Mia sincerely hoped that in their haste to bury the man, they'd at least placed him out of boar's range.

"Oh, Jasmine. She's such a social, outgoing person so I was kind of concerned when she decided to build her shelter further away from the majority of us," I gestured toward her shelter, "but she's just the type that copes with things privately. She seems to be doing a little better each day. Hopefully I can convince her to move closer."
With the kind of things that were happening on this island, it just seemed like a bad idea to be too far from everyone. I couldn't blame her though. As traumatized as I was to see Jordan's body with his neck twisted at an unnatural angle, I couldn't imagine what it would be like if it was someone I'd cared for.
"I'm glad I was traveling alone."

A red light went off in Cyrus' head. He hated having to fake sympathy for someone he didn't even know. "Well, I was lucky in that regard," he said. "Speaking of, I'm going to check on the light of my life. It was nice to meet both of you."
He nodded with a smile, and turned in the direction of his shelter.

***Roose enters***
Roose sat crouched in the sand, wiping sweat from his neck with a dampened piece of ragged cloth. He'd spent most of the morning helping to haul some of the more useful wreckage away from further down the beach, some of which he'd managed to squirrel away to improve his shelter.
When he looked up, he saw the young woman return, holding up the black guy who had the kid. He didn't look good. "What the hell is all this mess?" he muttered under his breath. He knew he should've gone along...or maybe, considering the man's state, it was a good thing he didn't.

Some time has passed and evening
has fallen. Locke had returned
before nightfall with a boar.
The fuselage is set on fire and
people begin to gather there for
the memorial service led by Claire.

CLAIRE LEADS THE FUNERAL SERVICE "Judith Martha Wexler from Denton, TX, guess she was going to catch a connecting flight. Um, she wore corrective lenses and she was an organ donor, or at least would have been. Steve and Kirsten, I don't know their last name, but they were really in love and were going to be married. At least, wherever they are now, they're not alone."
"... video store receipt lists his overdue charges for Willie Wonka and A Little Princess. Looks like he hadn't traveled much... as far as I can tell from his passport."
"... Wollstein, Harold, seat 23C. That's all we have on Harold, his name on a boarding pass... I just wish there was something more... Goodbye, Harold."
"Millicent Louise D'Agostino. Teaneck, New Jersey."

KATE
Kate approached the fuselage and listened as she looked around. "You seen Jack?" she asked Charlie quietly as he stepped up near her. He only shook his head and Kate turned her concentration to the memorial service.
HEIDI
I'd gone back and forth during the day about whether to attend the memorial or not. I hated funerals but this wasn't about what I liked or didn't like. This was about paying our last respects to all those people who didn't make it. So I attended though I stayed more toward the back, listening to as much as I could pick up from Claire over the sound of the roaring fire.
Claire was doing as good a job as anybody could but it made the whole event even sadder to hear these strangers being remembered by such random, impersonal pieces of details gathered from drivers' licenses and passports. At least it was better than being a nameless corpse.

Severin was sat near the funeral pyre, watching the orange glow and smelling the peeling crackle. He remembered the oil fields. He remembered the towers of flame that curled upward like some apocalyptic vision.
His head hurt, and his stare was impassive and unfocused. Severin couldn't stop thinking about the bodies, which by now would've cooked together and joined together in black-red union. The young pregnant woman was doing a fine job, and her sentiments were clearly motivated by a certain...nobility. But Severin still couldn't get past the thought of all that raw flesh. Those people weren't people anymore. Whatever they'd been, their...souls, their collective memories and experiences, or anything else, it was long gone.

As she walked by Heidi to get closer, Mia placed a hand lightly on her shoulder and gave her a small smile. Neither of them had family or friends being honored at the makeshift memorial but they felt the need to be there. She recognized Severin's silhouette in the glow of the fire and sank to the sand beside him. "Two funerals in as many days...we gotta' stop meeting like this, Darling," she remarked. She gave him a soft nudge with her elbow to let him know she was kidding, then wrapped her arms around her knees as she settled in to listen to the rest of Claire's speech.

Severin looked over at Mia, smiling weakly in response to her prod. "Perhaps next time we meet, it'll be because we both want the window seat on our rescue helicopter," he said, watching her for a moment before looking back at the shifting flames.
"They'll see the pyre," he said after a moment of silence. "If they're looking, they'll see it." Severin lifted a small bottle of water, half-full and held it out in an offer to Mia. "How was your day?"

James stood alone, arms folded, staring listlessly into the flames. He dared not look directly into them in case he got sight of Jess' burning body. He'd thought he'd be ready for this, had told himself that her soul or spirit or whatever it was that made Jess...well...Jess, was long dead and that this was merely a send off. But here he was, staring into the fire as a swell of sorrow rose up inside him. He tried to focus on what the blonde girl was saying but he felt as if he was drifting in and out of reality. The situation was too bizarre, too unreal for him to fully comprehend.

"They'll see the pyre. If they're looking, they'll see it ... How was your day?"
"Well, let's see," she pondered before taking a drink from the proferred water bottle. "I didn't have to bury anyone's dead fiancee, there weren't any knockdown dragout fights, our mysterious friend in the jungle kept quiet, and that bald guy actually bagged a boar for everyone's dinner, so...it was a pretty good day." She was willing herself to believe Severin's words, that rescue was coming. Even though the longer they stayed lost, the harder it would be to find them and the worse conditions for the survivors would get.

Severin listened carefully for a moment, and then was silent for a moment longer. "Ups and downs, I suppose," he said, finally. He looked back to the fire. "That young woman is rather admirable. All the worries we have must be twofold for her, being pregnant. And she still thinks to organize this."

***Heidi and Joanna enter from G3 - Beach and Shore - Day 6***
HEIDI
As we headed for the supplies, I looked around for the millionth time at the situation we all found ourselves in. "Thankfully, I have an overabundance of hope and optimism." I paused as I reached the shrinking pile of supplies, giving it a quick once over before digging around. "We all seem to be handling the situation with a level head. I think a lot of that is thanks to Jack."
Please let him get back to shore safely, kept repeating in my mind. If he didn't, who would keep this crazy train from derailing?

Joanna helped Heidi search through the small pile of supplies.
"I agree" She told her as she dug through a suitcase for anything that would help make a shealter. "I hope he's going to be okay. If Jack doesn't come back, it'll be chaos here without him"
Who eles was going to stop a fight from breaking out? Or help heal the hurt? He was their doctor and somehow had become their leader.
"I also hope that the guy who also went out in the water will be okay. Who was he anyway?" Joanna asked as she set the useless suitcase to the side and went digging through the pile some more.

"I hope he's going to be okay. If Jack doesn't come back, it'll be chaos here without him"
"That's kinda what I was worried about. There's others here who I'm sure could keep things calm. Like Sayid. I mean, I know he got in that fight with Sawyer but Sawyer could provoke anybody into a fight. Sayid's pretty much level headed and whenever I see him, he always seems to be doing something productive for the good of everyone."
"I also hope that the guy who also went out in the water will be okay. Who was he anyway?"
I sighed. "That's Stu. He'll be okay as long as he doesn't let his stubbornness outweigh his common sense." I grabbed a piece of material that looked like it could be used as a roof and tugged it free, tossing it aside when it turned out to be just a jacket. "I'm pretty sure his ego will keep him afloat," I mumbled half-jokingly.

Joanna chuckled a bit at the joke that Heidi had mumbled about the guy, Stu's ego as she tossed a single shoe to the side.
"I take it you know him" Joanna said as she moved an empty suitcase out of the pile.
She hoped that there were something in this pile that was useful for a roof, or they would be making a roof out of single shoes, jackets and suitcases.

"Actually, I don't know him all that well. I just met him the second day so that's like, what..." I had to recall how long we've been here, "four days ago?"
Considering I was frustrated and annoyed with him for the millionth time, this time for that stupid suicide mission, I stopped myself from elaborating. The last thing I wanted to do was to start venting frustrations about someone who's fate was unsure and right now, I wanted to take my mind off of Jack and Stu.
I settled for one of the questions from the Plane Crash Survivors: Breaking the Ice handbook. "So what were you doing in Australia?"

Joanna frowned a bit. It's been six days since the crash. Six days since she last seen her brother, father and new sister-in-law. She missed them very much and wondered from time to time on how they were doing. The question that Heidi had asked her made her think of them again.
"My brother's wedding. He and his new wife got married there about seven days ago" She told her, "What about you?"
