Part 1
Valentine’s day, a tradition since the Earth-that-was. Just a few weeks back, the crew had been on world and Wash took that chance to make plans. He saved up for a whole year to afford the gifts for his wife but it would be worth it. He was up early this morning and grabbing the supplies he hid in the cargo hold. He hid them in a grate behind some boxes, he smiled when he felt them still there. He was worried that someone would uncover the hidden spot and ruin the day.
“Wash,” He jumped at the sound of Simon’s voice, “everything ready?” Today was also about family and Wash wanted to make sure everyone felt appreciated. He dragged Simon into it when he and River ran into him buying most of the supplies. River suggested a meal and some cards, so Wash put her in charge of the valentines.
“Yep, everything is ready. Did River make the cards?” Wash smiled and handed Simon a small bag of things.
“Yes, she stayed up all night to finish them. Thank you for including her, she needs a bit of normal in her life right now.” Simon was very grateful, he loved seeing his sister happy.
“Great, all the supplies are counted for and this afternoon we strike.” Wash could see Simon’s hesitation as he held onto the bag. “Simon, she’s going to love it.”
“Are you sure?” Simon was always so nervous around Kaylee, always overthinking things.
“She will like anything you give her because it comes from you. Now, go-” Wash shooed him away before grabbing his bag of things and heading back towards the bunk he shared with Zoe.
When he reached the ladder, he noticed the light was on and that meant Zoe was awake. The plan was to surprise her in bed but now that was ruined, “Zoe?”
“I’ll be up in a minute.”
“I have a surprise for you,” She looked up to see him standing there with a grin. “Now get back into bed.”
“Wash, why-”
“Eh, back to bed or you’ll ruin the surprise.” Her brow raised and she begrudgingly made her way back to bed. She was already dressed for the day, “Are you in bed?”
“Yes, I’m in bed.” Zoe couldn’t help but love him, he had become such an essential part of her life. He knew how to make her laugh, he knew when to just leave her be. At times he said nothing and just held her when she needed it the most. He never pushed and he love’s so fiercely, she never knew a man like him. “Wash, shouldn’t you be flying the ship?” When he reached the last step she spotted the bag in his hand, “What is that?”
“This is for later,” He put the bag in his small lock box, “No peeking, promise?”
“Promise,” She even crossed her heart as he plopped into the bed next to her.
“Mornin’,” He leaned in to kiss her lips with a smile, which she returned.
“Mm, Mornin’. I know I didn’t miss an anniversary so why do I have surprises?”
“Because today is an earth-that-was holiday, Valentine’s Day!” Wash prompted, pulling out an envelope from his shirt. “Surprise one of the day, Mrs. Washburne.” Zoe took the paper in her hand, a small smile escaping her normally stern face.
“I don’t have anything for you,” She opened the flap and slipped the paper out.
“I don’t need anything else but you.” A full smile on Zoe’s face was something that Wash lived for. He loved seeing the real her, the smiling face of a girl he never knew. “Read it,” He kissed her cheek before wrapping his arms around her waist. Her eyes scanned the paper, her fingers traced each word as her breath caught in her throat. Zoe could let her hair down when it was just the two of them, she could be open with him. War changes people and it took a long time for Wash to sneak his way in but she finally let it happen.
When she was done, she placed it beside them and turned to face him. “You are about the sappiest, sweetest, Chai Neow I have ever met in my life. I love you,” She leaned in and kissed him, a slow lingering kiss that she shared with no one else in her entire life. He was her everything, body, soul, and nothing would change it. “You’re going to be late for work,” Wash chuckled when she pinned him, so far this day was going just the way he expected it too.
Simon checked on River to kill some time before he made his way to the engine room. Sometimes, Kaylee would fall asleep while working on the engine but today she was not there. He was nervous about giving her this gift, mostly because he didn’t know if she would like it. Would it be fancy enough, would she care? Kaylee wasn’t the first girlfriend he had but she was the most serious and that was scary. He paused just outside of her bunk and took several breaths, he pressed the button and let the door open. “Kaylee, are you awake?” He heard a yawn coming from below, “Should I come back?”
“Don’t be silly, come in.” He descended her ladder and smiled when he saw her sitting on her bunk, reading. “Hey you,” She tapped a spot next to her and he sat down. She leaned in to kiss him good morning and he pulled away slightly, “I brushed my teeth this mornin’, what’s wrong?”
“Nothing, I’m sorry,” He leaned in and kissed her, “I just got you something and I’m nervous.”
“And extra honest today, I’m likin’ it.” She grinned and accepted the box he handed to her.
“Yeah, um, Wash told me today was some holiday. Valentine’s day,” He settled in next to her on the bunk and she leaned against him while she opened it. “I’ve exhausted funds with being a fugitive but I was able to get this for you.” Kaylee opened the tiny box and inside sat on fluffy white, a tiny little charm in the shape of Serenity. “I know how much you like this ship, you’re always tinkering.” Simon sat nervously and waited for Kaylee to say anything, which he hoped was soon. “Do you like it?” He chuckled nervously.
“I love it, its- oh! I didn’t get you anything.”
“It is fine, I saw an opportunity and got it made. You don’t need to get me anything,” Simon could finally breathe, glad that she liked it.
“I’m gonna make you somethin’, guessin’ we’ll see what I come up with.” Kaylee craned her neck to kiss him before placing the little charm on her shelf. “Small things are the sweetest, Simon.”
“I'm used to making grand gestures with expensive things, I was uncertain how you would receive it.”
“I don’t care about expensive things. As long as it comes from here,” She pointed at his chest, “That’s all that matters, so try relaxin’ a bit, doc.”
“I’m trying my best.”
