The Greater Calling - Part One: The Promise
Have you ever felt called to something greater? Something that excites you and scares the daylights out of you all at once? Imagine being called to play a pivotal part in the way that the future of the galaxy sets it's course. Good or bad, it could go either way. Some have a choice to make a difference in the world or to carry on in the background of all the chaos. And then there are few that don't have a choice in the matter, for this is what they were born into this universe to do. If Neera'lan Kenobi had a say in the matter, she wouldn't be serving as lieutenant Lyra of the Starkiller base. Side by side General Hux, commanding crews and armies against the resistance and practically the rest of the galaxy that stood in the way of not only for the First Order but for their commander Kylo Ren and supreme leader Snoke. And yet, here she was at the lookout bay, peering out into the dark abyss that was the universe. This moment she had taken for herself was no more than a brief pause in this hectic life of Lieutenant Lyra's that she had been living for quite some time now. She was never on leave and her job was never done. Not until all of Snoke's sinister wishes had been granted, complete ownership of the galaxy included. As crazy as it seems, this is where Neera'lan needed to be to fulfill her destiny's beckoning. And it all started with a simple promise made to a mother, desperate to save her son from toxic destruction that had now almost swallowed him entirely. This moment she had chosen for time to stand still for just a few minutes was an attempted getaway from General Hux, more or less.
Embarrassed and ridiculed in front of her whole crew for her supposed lacking method of instruction and command was not the way she intended for today to go. Clutching her clipboard tightly against her somber colored uniform, she recalled back to the moments of belittlement by her General. Just because she didn't treat her team like disposable incompentents as he treats his own. Though, Leutenant Lyra understood well that Hux was under an immense amount of pressure as one of Snoke's right hand men, especially with the new weapon of mass destruction almost ready for action. Everything had to go perfectly according to their plan. And she needed to start acting the part.
"Lieutenant Lyra,"
Lyra's distracted mind was brought back to the present as her gaze snapped over to one of her crew members looking mildly distressed.
"What is it, soldier?" Lyra commanded as she composed a stern expression.
"It's the messenger that was sent to Kylo Ren, about the missing driod. He was told that nothing bad was going to happen...but by the sounds of it, things are getting out of control. A couple of the crew mates are terrified, lieutenant."
Lyra raised her eyebrows slightly at this revelation. Hux was supposed to deliver that message himself to Kylo, as it was known to likely spark a rather negative reaction from the commander. However, if this was the decision the general has made then it was not for her to question. Pursing her lips in an annoyed manner, Lyra took a couple of steps forward.
"And what is it you expect me to do? Go in there and save your friend's ass? He'll suffer the percussions our commander seems fit."
The crew mate stood their silently staring Lyra down. He wasn't going to quit so easily.
"Soldier, I could have you punished for speaking out of line to your authority figure. Stand down."
As much as she wanted to in her heart, Lyra could not show this crew mate compassion. In the eyes of the first order, they were all disposable and anyone could fill this man's shoes. Coming to the conclusion of his defeat, the crew member frowned.
"I understand. My apologies, Lieutenant."
He gave Lyra a respected nod before rapidly returning to his station, leaving Lyra replaying the scenario that just unfolded. Rolling her eyes, she contemplated her next move out of guilt. "Can't believe I'm doing this," This messenger sounded like he had people aboard who cared about him, and Lyra knew they couldn't afford to carelessly lose any more lives of their crew. After this, she would remain low key until the time was right.

The doors to the control room slid open as soon as Lieutenant Lyra was granted permission to enter, just in time to witness the messenger forcibly gliding across the room and into the choke hold of their commander, Kylo Ren.
"What girl?!"
Kylo's booming voice sounded through his black and chrome helmet. Great, this officer just fed the commander more than he needed to know. Even Lyra and Hux knew little of this mystery girl who now had posession of the bb8 unit that Snoke holds an intense desire to obtain, and even more of a coincidence that the escapee trooper was accompanying them. It was still rather baffling to the crew how a Droid could hold such importance to someone like Snoke. However, Lyra had gained respect and trust within her ranking which led for her ears to retrieve some interesting intel. She didn't know the complete story, but enough to know that there was more to the story that met the eye.
"Commander, officer," Lyra saluted, announcing her arrival into the room as Kylo was wrapped up in shooting the messenger boy. Kylo Ren eased his force grip on the officer, allowing him to fall hard to the ground. Kylo did not address the Lieutenant but had turned away from the officer he had just been taking his anger out on, resting his hands on the dashboard he had just destroyed in what looked like an attempt to collect himself.
"Lieutenant Lyra," the messenger hastily picked himself up from the ground and stood at attention.
"At ease, officer, I'll take matters from here. Return to your station," At Lyra's confirming tone that dripped with annoyance of the officer's pitiful attempt to deliver the disturbing news, the officer quickly made his exit, not wanting to bathe in Kylo's wrath for one more moment. But for Lyra, she had a different outlook of Kylo Ren than the majority of the inhabitants of this ship. She knew of his story, who he used to be, how he was still loved by the ones who had given him life. For most of the crew members aboard, they saw Kylo Ren as the powerful command under Snoke whose merciless demeanor should be feared by all who cross his path. However, for Lyra there was no wrath but just a corrupted boy behind a scary mask. And now silence filled the air as the Lieutenant was faced to finish this meeting with the commander that most had dreaded.
"Commander, we have teams that have deployed immediately in search for the coordinates of the falcon. There is no doubt that we will succeed amidst this peculiar roadblock-"
"Roadblock," Kylo cut Lyra off, scoffing at the word she had just used to cover the damage of the situation to appease her commander, "Don't mask this failure as minor setback, lieutenant. The Droid has been stolen by a traitor and a girl, and this mission has now failed!"
The gloves that covered Kylo's hands formed two fists of fury as they came crashing down on the dashboard, a couple of sparks flying from the broken circuits. The sound made Lyra jump slightly, but firmly stood her ground nonetheless. She knew he was worried, as now he would have to report this very message to Snoke. He would carry on the duty of messenger only to be reprimended and scolded.
"You're right. Yes, we failed the mission. We failed you, Commander. And we would be deserving of any punishment that you would have to serve us. But the Droid is still out there," Lyra said affirmatively as she moved up beside Kylo Ren at the dashboard he sulked at, "And we are all living and breathing this mission, because we all know what's at stake. So I promise you, we will not fail. Not again. And you can hold me to that, commander."
Kylo's helmet slowly turned to face Lyra as she spoke. Her heart hammered greatly against her chest, knowing she may have been speaking out of line just as her crew member had done to her earlier. Kylo stared at Lyra for what seemed like ages, and it was hard for Lyra to read him with that rediculous mask on his face. However, this was not her first encounter with Kylo Ren and had always remained loyal to her commander in order to attempt to fulfill her secret mission. She was confident that he wouldn't hurt her.
"The only thing that's peculiar here is the way you think you can speak to your Commander, Lieutenant. And to not even tremble one bit in my presance," Kylo Ren stood up right as he slowly began to circle around Lyra like a vulture scouting it's prey, "Do you need me to demonstrate to you what I am capable of?"
"Your powers are immense, Commander, I have witnessed you take down men within seconds. It is feared by all," Lyra confessed, however not very convincingly. She knew of the great powers that sith lords had possessed in the past and could only guess that Snoke had trained Kylo under that same scope. Lyra could practically feel him see right through her lies and hoped she hadn't given herself away this early in the game.
"Correct. Feared by all. But apparently not by you." Kylo Ren completed the circle as he came around to tower over Lyra as they stood face to face, "But don't worry, I sense that we both know of the plan in which the Droid is nothing but a key. Something greater is coming, and that should make you terrified of me, if not already."
Kylo and Lyra stood in a face off for a moment more before Kylo tore his gaze away. With the wave of his hand, the doors to the control room opened before he returned to the destroyed dashboard.
"Find the Droid. And if the girl and the traitor are with it, bring them to me. Do not fail me again, Lieutenant."
"Yes, commander." At that moment, Lyra took her leave as she exited the opened doors and into the corridors.
Leaning against the nearest wall, she managed to catch her breath. Placing her hand over her chest, she felt her heart rate slow with every exhale she let escape. Too close of a call. This mission was going to be a lot more difficult than she thought. But she reminded herself that she had to keep her sight set on her promise to the true general she served, the reason for why she was even posing in the first order. No matter how difficult it got, and no matter at what cost.
" I will not fail you...General Organa. I will bring your son home," Lyra whispered to herself as she gathered her composure in the barren corridor.
Heading to her station, Lyra knew her next move would have to gain Kylo's trust. She couldn't afford to fail. The galaxy depended on her.
