Winters tended to take a lot out of Ingrid. If it wasn't the full days of looking after the kids, it was the the gloomy weather and harsh cold draining her energy so it had been early nights and late mornings on her days off. That morning had been one of them, as her mouth stretched into a yawn as she made her way down to the kitchen in her contentment for some breakfast. Covering her yawn which was now over extended by a few elongated seconds, Ingrid began to descend nonchalantly down the stairs. Though, when she threw her gaze over the railing, she did not expect to see Nora hunched over on the couch in a daze. Her feet halted as Ingrid paused in the middle of the staircase as the sight took her by surprise. Ingrid's heart stopped as her mouth fell open, unaware of how tight she was gripping the railing. Suffering from an intense case of deja vu, Ingrid had lived this moment in the past - before Lucille had been admitted to the hospital for the last time. Her eyes remaining on Nora, Ingrid continued to slowly make her way down the stairs and approached her gently. Crouching down in front of where Nora was on the couch, Ingrid placed her hand on Nora's forehead that felt hotter than the sun.
"You're burning up," Ingrid spoke softly, yet grave concern filled her complexion as her eyes met Nora's. She didn't have to tell Nora what she was thinking, she was confident Nora already knew.

"You're burning up."
Nora recoiled from Ingrid's cold hand against her hot skin. "No, I'm fine," she protested weakly. "I just need to take some more meds, go back to sleep upstairs. Can't risk either of you getting sick." Ignoring the protests of her aching muscles, she got to her feet and proceeded to the kitchen. She retrieved a bottle of aspirin from one of the cabinets, shook out a couple of pills, and went to the refrigerator for water. But turning around to the kitchen island left Nora's head spinning and she clutched at the counter's edge for balance.

"No, I'm fine,""I just need to take some more meds, go back to sleep upstairs. Can't risk either of you getting sick."
Ingrid watched Nora divert her telepathic requests as she got up and walked past her into the kitchen. Bringing herself to her own two feet, Ingrid sighed in her concern for Nora as she watched her start to rummage through the kitchen cabinet. Trailing behind Nora, Ingrid didn't say much more as she knew that she couldn't force anyone to get help. Nora would need to want to receive it, and Ingrid knew that would take a hell of a lot of convincing. What happened next might have just been the breakthrough Nora would need to realize that she needed better care.
As Ingrid followed Nora into the kitchen, she was about to prepare some breakfast until Nora took a slight tumble. Ingrid gasped as her reflexes kicked in, grabbing Nora's backside and slowly helping her up from the counter she had fallen onto.
"I think you need something a bit more than aspirin," Ingrid commented with slight worry, it was no revelation that Nora was more ill than she wanted to lead on but Ingrid knew that she needed care that couldn't be provided from simply sleeping it off, "I know you don't like the idea. Neither do I. Though, the hospital is the only place you're gonna get better. They have more medicine and supplies there than we do here. And if this sickness gets any worse and spreads...I don't want to lose you." Ingrid faced Nora. A half grin playing on Ingrid's face masked the pain the parallel of the situation brought forth from the deep depths of her heart. She had already lost her sisters...she couldn't lose another.

"I know you don't like the idea. Neither do I. Though, the hospital is the only place you're gonna get better. They have more medicine and supplies there than we do here. And if this sickness gets any worse and spreads...I don't want to lose you."
Nora hated to see the sincere concern on Ingrid's face. After all they'd been through, there was no way she'd let some stupid stomach virus be the end. "Oh, come on, kid," she scoffed. "It's gonna' take more than a fever to get rid of me. Plus, if I died before Negan, he'd kill me." Thankfully, he was still upstairs asleep. If he saw her in this state, he might mock her for weakness or alternately be excessively worried by it. And frankly, she wasn't sure which was worse.
But despite her protests, she would have to admit that Ingrid was probably right. Her illness was feeling beyond the help of anything they had in the house. "I just hate to take a bed from someone that really needs it," Nora continued. "Dr. Shaw said they were getting overwhelmed --"

After three months of staying, the community had finally started to grow on Negan. There was especially someone from the female population that pretty literally had started to bring something to grow on him. After all, it had been a while, so who would blame a man to get himself one of the few pleasures he can have in times like these? This wasn't about feelings, but Lucille surely wouldn't come back from the dead to doom him anyway. Not twice at least.
Negan was lying awake for a while already, when he heard voices coming from downstairs, probably from the kitchen. With this viral disease going about the community for weeks already, he had started to worry about Nora's condition. She was good at playing it down to just a cold but she was also good at deluding herself. Just as he was good at deceiving himself about how much she actually meant to him. He was even so good at it to cover these feelings up with this permanent teasing towards her and lately with this distraction of another woman, even if that was just a bodily thing.
As soon as he heard a loud noise coming from downstairs, Negan sat up straight in his bed at once. He quickly threw on his clothes before rushing out of his room. When he neared the kitchen, he realized that Ingrid was with her, so he actually eased a little. Also, he wouldn't rush in there like someone who was excessively worried.
"You look shitty...", Negan threw over at Nora, once he had stepped through the door. His tone was rather casually, yet serious.

"I just hate to take a bed from someone that really needs it,""Dr. Shaw said they were getting overwhelmed --" "You look shitty..."
Ingrid stared rather blankly at Negan for a moment, as he intruded into the kitchen with his typical arrogant nature. It neither shocked or surprised Ingrid any longer, in fact, she was used to his remarks by now and had grown somewhat immune to what should shock her. It was normal behavior for a normal Negan, and Ingrid knew deep down that he cared for Nora just as much as she did, so she simply ignored the comment from the peanut gallery and pressed forward with the matter at hand.
"Nora, Nora,..." Ingrid sighed, as she returned her gaze soft with concern back at Nora, "...You're one of the most selfless people I know, always putting other first...the residents, your family," Ingrid shed a halfhearted grin as she kept contact with the sick member of their golden trio, "That's what I love about you. But this time, It's time to put you first." Ingrid nodded in assurance, she knew Nora was worth every hospital bed in that facility.

"You look shitty..."
So, condescending mockery it was. "Morning to you, too," Nora replied, mustering all the cheery sarcasm she could. But frankly she just wasn't up to the usual verbal sparring. In fact, she wanted to go lie back down if she were being honest.
"...You're one of the most selfless people I know, always putting others first...the residents, your family. That's what I love about you. But this time, it's time to put you first."
"Ugh, I hate when you get all Hallmark card," she groaned in response to Ingrid's sincere assertions. Admittedly, it was difficult to think of her own needs given their circumstances. Everyone needed something nowadays, and some needed more than others. It was a point of pride for her to give more than she took from the community. But she could give nothing if she didn't take the time to get well. "Fine, I'll go," she relented.

"Fine, I'll go,"
She accepted? Wow, she must be feeling really shitty if she did without any more objection.
"You go?", Negan repeated rather doubtfully though. "You look like conking out any moment. You go nowhere by yourself." His words did come out rather harsh and commanding, yet there was concern in them, just hidden under his usual cloak to hide emotions - surely not because he was ashamed of them but because he was sure they would be doing no service to anyone.
Leaving Nora no time to react, he reached out to her arm to wrap it around his neck. Negan wouldn't watch her collapsing on the ground just to let her keep up with playing Miss Unbreakable.

"You look like conking out any moment. You go nowhere by yourself."
Thank god for Negan, Ingrid thought, as she knew that he would have his way or the high way. Especially when it came to the ones he cared about. "I'll grab her things," Ingrid nodded and a relieved expression of thankfulness waved over her features in Negan's direction as he roped Nora's arm around his neck, "Let's get you on the mend, and you'll be back to kicking ass in no time." Ingrid let out a slightly shaky chuckle as she placed a gentle, brief hand on Nora's shoulder before high tailing it upstairs to gather necessities Nora may need with her in case her hospital stay extended to a few days.

"You go? You look like conking out any moment. You go nowhere by yourself."
"I'll grab her things. Let's get you on the mend, and you'll be back to kicking ass in no time."
And just like that, the decision had been made for her. Not that Nora was in any position to object, mentally or physically. She was frustrated by her present weakness but that was soon overruled by her appreciation for their efforts to help her. And she amusingly wondered how many women would envy her being in Negan's embrace but chalked it up to fever-induced delirium as she let herself lean on his strength.
*** Nora, Negan, and Ingrid head for the hospital ***
Entering the emergency room of the fort's hospital was like sensory overload -- so many people and sounds and movements. Clearly, the flu or whatever it was, was hitting the community hard and the medical personnel were struggling to keep up with the demand.
Again, Nora felt a pang of guilt for wasting their time, but managed to catch the eye of one of the few doctors she knew as a frequent cafeteria patron. "Dr. Shaw, got a minute?" she called out above the noise.
The doctor stopped in his tracks and moved closer, taking in the sight of the three of them. "Nora? You don't look so good."
"Yeah, we've established that," she remarked. "I don't feel so good, either."

Man, this woman was still a bitch even when being sick as a dog, Negan thought with a smirk. He liked that.
"Hey," Negan suddenly intervened before this would become a back and forth between them. "Dr... Shaw," he continued with one hand tapping on the man's name tag, finding it rather sappy to keep to this pre-apocalyptic tradition of wearing uniforms and tags. "Would you do us the favor and not waste time but instead do your job?" Negan couldn't help but throw a sassy sideglance over at Ingrid and Nora, silently asking Was that nice enough? He had given them his promise to try to fit in, but no one ever said he had to do it without a little spite.

"Hey," "Dr... Shaw," "Would you do us the favor and not waste time but instead do your job?"
Amidst their attempt at finding Nora any shred of care for her ill condition, Negan felt it was a good time to intervene with ... well, being Negan. He cared for Nora just as much as Ingrid did, and sometimes she even got the feeling that Negan might even like Nora more than just a survival pal. If it were any other woman it would definitely bother her. But Nora was special and became almost like a sister to Ingrid. At this point, she was just waiting for them to get together already. But right now, Ingrid knew he was trying to be on his best behavior. Ingrid turned her head to Negan as she felt his glace, anticipating her approval of whether he did good or not. Giving him a pursed grin, Ingrid gave him a single nod that spoke 'good job, buddy' before turning serious and addressing Dr. Shaw herself, "Nora's had a fever running rampant all morning long. You don't think she's got what's been hopping around the Fort, do you?"
"We can't be sure without running some tests. But you are right, Nora definitely is unwell," Dr. Shaw wrote a couple of notes on a consult clipboard and flagged down a nurse attempting to scoot by, "Please admit Nora to the next available ER bed with a dosage of T3's and an IV drip for hydration please." Dr. Shaw turned to the concerned faces of Ingrid and Negan after uttering his doctor talk to the nurse, "We're going to take really good care of your friend. She'll be on the mend in no time." Dr. Shaw attempted to comfort the entourage as the Nurse returned with a wheelchair for Nora.

Nora stayed silent as Negan and Ingrid respectively spoke for her, not having the energy to interject. Just being in the hospital made her anxious. Especially since the last hospital she'd spent any time in was overrun by a throng of grasping and biting walkers.
"We're going to take really good care of your friend. She'll be on the mend in no time."
"A wheelchair? Really?" Nora whined, feeling it unnecessary and overdramatic. But a scolding look from the nurse, the doctor, and surprisingly Negan made her relent. "Fine," she sighed, extricating herself from Negan's supportive shoulder and into the chair. She settled into the seat as the nurse wheeled her to her next destination, all the while catching snippets of conversations between other emergency room attendees.
"We brought our dad in yesterday. Why can't we see him?"
"My wife came in over a week ago. You said she wouldn't be contagious after 24 hours!"
Finally they arrived at a bedside where Nora was instructed to lie down while the nurse busied herself with setting up the IV. She still felt terrible but at least she was taking the first step on the road to getting better.

"Nora's had a fever running rampant all morning long. You don't think she's got what's been hopping around the Fort, do you?"
"We can't be sure without running some tests. But you are right, Nora definitely is unwell," Negan would have loved to intervene with another comment to finally put the doctor's ass into motion instead of telling them things that they already knew, but, luckily, Dr. Shaw spoke up again before he could have, now speaking to a nurse nearby. "Please admit Nora to the next available ER bed with a dosage of T3's and an IV drip for hydration please." It was then that concern reappeared back on Negan's features. He wasn't exactly educated in doctor's language, but what he knew was that these instructions didn't sound like they were commonly necessary for someone who was just having a bad cold.
"We're going to take really good care of your friend. She'll be on the mend in no time.", Dr. Shaw was answering their concerned faces before the nurse returned with a wheelchair for Nora.
"A wheelchair? Really?" Although Negan had a bad feeling about this - and he was sure that this was coming from more than just his loathing for any hospital ever since it had been a hospital that became his wife's last station and also his first real-life nightmare - he was doing his best to hide that and even gave Nora a scolding look for not cooperating. "Fine,"
But then why did he feel this sudden urge to not allow that Nora leaves from his side and stop the nurse from wheeling her away, even though he knew that they had no other option. For some reason, he really hated to trust this community, and now there was something at stake that was actually important to him - Nora's life.
"I don't like this.", Negan said to Ingrid in a quiet yet slightly aggressive way as they watched the doctor and the nurse wheeling their friend away while they couldn't do anything but pray for her - if Negan would be one of those pathetic persons who pray instead of doing something useful, that was. But what could they actually do? There must be something. While he was growing with anger, a hard expression lay on his face.

"I don't like this."
Ingrid kept her gaze forward as Negan spoke, her eyes glued on Nora as she was wheeled away by the doctor and nurse until she was no longer in plain sight. She stood beside Negan with her arms crossed defensively. Finding herself in the middle of a hospital setting, she tried to repress old, painful memories that she wished that she could just simply forget. She knew that Negan felt them too. They went through the same traumatic experience together, in slightly different ways, but together nonetheless. Watching another one they both loved very much having to be cared for in a setting like this was increasingly off putting, and Ingrid blamed her raging gut feeling on her memory recollection. Yet, she knew they both had to be strong for Nora, just as they were for Lucille.
"Yeah, I don't like it either," Ingrid shook her head, her arms still crossed over her chest, "But they've got what she needs here to get back into shape. Our Nora is no good being ill," Ingrid finally tipped her gaze up to Negan's, who appeared to be hardened in anguish, "Hey," Ingrid placed a hand on Negan's shoulder, "She's gonna be okay. This is the best we can do for her - trust me." Was this really the best thing for Nora? Ingrid sure hoped so. She was no good at home, this place was her last resort to making a recovery, "Should we see if this place has one of those god-awful cafeteria's with the shit coffee and the creepy jell-o?" Ingrid looked up at her brother-in-law as she cracked a half smile, hoping to find them both a distraction.

Nora felt like she'd been lying in the hospital bed for hours waiting to hear something from someone. She tried to remind herself there were other people there in worse condition who needed more serious care. Still, it was annoying as she tried to catch her breath from another round of coughing and gulped some water from the plastic cup beside the bed.
"And that would be a dry, hacking cough I hear," Dr. Shaw noted as he reappeared with the clipboard that seemed perpetually attached to his arm.
"What's the damage, doc?" Nora asked.
"Well, the cough plus high fever, headache, fatigue, all point to the flu," he informed her. "We want to make sure it doesn't turn into pneumonia, though, so we'll get you upstairs to a scenic room on the third floor and start you on Tamiflu coupled with a decongestant."
"How long am I gonna' be here?"
"Shouldn't be more than a few days," the doctor answered. "Don't worry, I'll write you a note for the head lunch lady."
"Doc, I heard..." Nora began, hesitant to discuss something she wasn't even sure she had really heard. She did have a high fever, after all. "Some people, they said they hadn't been able to see their family...."
He nodded solemnly. "Sadly, some people have taken a turn for the worse. Like I said, pneumonia. We're trying to keep them isolated from the general population. But hey, worry about getting better yourself right now. Okay?"
"Yeah, thanks," Nora agreed with a slight nod.

"Yeah, I don't like it either,", Ingrid eventually agreed with him after a long pause of silence. There hadn't been any agreement necessary anyway, for Negan knew that they both were taking the same horror trip down memory lane. And if she hadn't spoken up again, Negan might have done something stupid or at least something inconsiderate.
"But they've got what she needs here to get back into shape. Our Nora is no good being ill," And yet, that was what they always said, no matter how fucking miserable someone looked.
"Hey," Ingrid suddenly added more emphatically, placing a hand on his shoulder. "She's gonna be okay. This is the best we can do for her - trust me."
Negan said nothing in return but instead lowered his head towards her with one heavy sigh. He still had a feeling that something wasn't alright, but she had a point. There was nothing else they could do for her right now anyway.
"Should we see if this place has one of those god-awful cafeteria's with the shit coffee and the creepy jell-o?"
At that, Negan suddenly chuckled, not exactly a joyful chuckle but instead similar to the half smile on her face. "Am all set for that. If we're lucky enough, we might end up in the same room with Nora." She was not yet in a critical condition, or he hoped so at least, but nobody really loved jokes like that. Negan was lucky, though, that Ingrid knew him well enough to look behind his way of inappropriate joking. "Let's go."

*** Two Days Later ***Ingrid was determined to make something of herself that day. By mid morning, she had found it within herself to follow through with her morning routine of getting washed and dressed to conquer the to-do list that she conjured up in her mind. She wanted to be motivated and keep herself busy. Yet, she found herself laying down again on top of her neatly folded bed with barely any energy to leave her own bedroom. Her eyes bore heavy bags of exhaustion that weighed her head down on the pillow that was tucked under the covers as she stared up at her ceiling. Her sleep had been severely broken the past couple of nights as her fears ran rampantly wild the moment she would close her eyes. They were supposed to hear from the hospital by now about Nora's condition. Ingrid wouldn't have been as worried if the officials of the Fort hadn't tightened up restrictions. The virus that appeared to be spreading through the Fort only seemed to get worse with reports of new cases every single day. Everyone was highly advised to stay home and away from others that weren't within their own living quarters. Ingrid hoped that the hospital was simply too busy dealing with the incoming sick cases to make the call, and that Nora was almost ready to come back home. But after what her and Negan went through with Lucille, Ingrid was absolutely petrified to even begin to put any sort of energy into optimism. She didn't want to even begin to think about losing another sister, not again.
Ingrid had no idea just how hard it would be to not have Nora around, until living through the past two days that is. She didn't realized just how much the floorboards squeaked in the kitchen, let alone just how empty the entire house felt without her. Whether it be endless conversations on the porch at night or times of emotional support, Ingrid began to realize just how much she depended on Nora. The same day that Ingrid lost Lucille, little did she know that she was about to gain another older sister. Lucille could never be replaced, yet Ingrid felt that Nora cared for her deeply as one of her own. Ingrid didn't realize just how much Nora meant to her until now. Which also made her feel incredibly homesick for Lucille. A war raged within Ingrid's mind over the little diary tucked away perfectly under her mattress. Lucille's Diary, the one she had recovered from Lucille and Negan's home before the life they built together went up in smoke and flames. She craved more of her sister's words, but with everything that had happened with Nora lately, Ingrid was terrified to reopen another wound that hadn't really healed in the first place. Ingrid's mind said no, but her heart said yes as it pulled her to a sitting position on the bed. Heaving a deep sigh, Ingrid reached her hand underneath the mattress for the first time to retrieve the diary. One hand held the diary, her other hand placed itself over her chest to keep her heart inside of her chest as it beat so rapidly against her chest that it felt as if it was about to burst outward. Closing her eyes, Ingrid took a moment to herself to draw in a deep inhale. Letting the exhale go, her eyes opened back up again and placing her gaze on the journal, Ingrid thought no further on the matter. Her heart had won, and it was time to embrace Lucille's life on the pages of Chapter Two...

Nora wasn’t sure how long she’d been lying there in that hospital bed. But there had to have been some passage of time given the light and dark that played across the closed blinds of the room’s windows. At least her head was clearer and her body wasn’t racked by chills or aching pain anymore.
The thermometer beeped in her mouth to signal its readiness, and Dr. Shaw retracted it to read the display. “Your fever’s come down a lot,” he advised. “Almost back to normal. How are you feeling?”
“Much better, doc.”
“Good. We’ll keep you on the meds and the IV fluids so that you don’t get dehydrated. Sorry to tell you you'll be back slinging mashed potatoes at the cafeteria in no time."
"Sounds good to me," Nora declared.
Suddenly a nurse burst into the room and made a beeline straight for the doctor. "You’re needed up on 5.”
“I’ll be there in a sec,” Dr. Shaw replied.
“He said now,” the nurse insisted.
“Fine." He gave Nora an apologetic look and laid his clipboard aside. "I’ll be right back.”
"Yeah, go ahead," Nora said, watching both of them leave in a hurry. What was happening on 5 that was so urgent? Maybe a patient needing immediate attention? But she hadn't heard any alarms. Ugh, how much longer was she going to be stuck here? Maybe there was something in the doctor's notes. Curiosity got the better of Nora and she tried to scoot out of the bed and over to the clipboard.
Her chart on the top page was an illegible collection of handwritten words and numbers. No hints to her future there. But underneath were other pages. One was a printed chart with columns that read “Patient ID," "TOA," "TOD," and "TOR,” and then military times listed underneath. What did all this mean? She was engrossed in reading but still listened for footsteps in the hallway. When it sounded like the doctor was returning, she tossed the clipboard back onto the table and resumed her position in the bed.

It had come with the circumstance of Nora not being around, that Negan had started to really miss those times where it had been only the three of them - especially the rare times where it had been only Nora and him. Sometimes he was secretly blaming himself for the chances he had missed, and at the same time being glad he did. Of course, he wouldn't go so far to give more weight to the whole thing than a desire of hooking her up, because if he did, there would be no turning back. He would either become a man who wanted a woman he couldn't have - or worse - a man getting who he wanted but then hurt that someone - again. Negan had been there, and he had done that. Many times.
Anyways, the thought of never being able to talk to her again was driving him mad. He might naysay this whole situation, but what if not? What if she had caught that damn virus everyone was talking about lately? Why the fuck didn't the hospital just make the call? Anger was, yet again, rising up in him, although Negan knew that wouldn't change anything. But if he had to just sit here and to wait any longer, he probably would just go and beat a path to the hospital doors.
With a heavy sigh, Negan sat up from the bed. All this thinking was only making things worse. He wondered how Ingrid was doing, and if he should pay her a visit, though, he felt like they didn't really have had a serious conversation one-to-one ever since they had left Lucille's last memorial - a memorial he had to set on fire to save their lives. Or maybe this whole situation was just too much reminding him of the past where they had a lot of those conversations; of the days when they both had made the decision to leave their own needs behind just to be at her side for the rest of her days on this rotten earth.
Negan sighed again before he finally rose to head towards the door of his room. Maybe sometimes it was better to be alone together than to be it all by yourself.
***
Once he had reached Ingrid's room, he suddenly paused in front of the door. Usually, he was without manners, but this time he actually respected her privacy, and so he reached out with his hand and knocked on the door, waiting for her to answer it.

Unable to rip her eyes away even if she wanted to, Ingrid's gaze was weighed down by the emotions dripping off of each and every handwritten word by her late, beloved sister. She could feel her cheeks swell with a tint of pink as she read further into the entry, as if she was prying and reading something she shouldn't. It felt strange to read about the life of someone close to you that no longer exists in their now physical nightmare of a world. Ingrid read further, becoming captivated by Lucille's words and experiences. Especially for the love she had for Negan as Ingrid bled over into the third entry without even knowing. At this point, Ingrid mindlessly was turning the pages as she swore she could hear Lucille's voice through the pages...
Suddenly, Lucille's voice was interrupted by a rapping sound at the door. Ingrid's eyes grew wide as they whipped up towards the door as her heart stopped momentarily. Panicking, Ingrid's reflexes worked fairly fast and within seconds the diary was wedged back underneath the mattress. In that moment, Ingrid had absolutely no idea what to do with herself, so sitting upright on her bed she folded her hands in her lap and remembered to breathe.
"Come in."

Negan heard some noise like when somebody was hurriedly clearing the place, but he didn't think it to be anything else than a jumping young woman not awaiting a visit in the morning.
"Come in."
Negan entered through the door, yet pausing at the sight of Ingrid just sitting upright on her bed with her hands folded in her lap. Not because it would make her look suspicious but because she seemed to be at loose ends with herself just like him.
"Hey," Negan said as he closed the door behind, the muffled tone in his voice fitting the lines of worry on his face. Once he was inside the room, his sister-in-law looking up at him, he actually didn't know how to do this. Talk. However, the mere thought of spending another day alone in his room without any news from the hospital was driving him mad.
"Not sure how you feel about that," he finally spoke up again after a while of awkward silence, "but one more day and I might give a shit about their goddamn rules."

Since Nora really had nothing better to do at the moment, she was observing. The faces, the names, the timing of their rotations. Something felt off, especially the way the nurse and the doctor had spoken about the fifth floor. Seemingly where the most chronic cases were. And the people in the lobby demanding to see their family members but getting the runaround … she couldn’t let it go. The fever had broken and her breathing had eased. A rational person would stay there and rest like they’d been told. But since when did rational get you anywhere in this world? Nora looked at the clock and knew that the nurses would be on break. Plenty of time for her to sneak up two floors, take a look around, and come back without being missed.
She steeled herself to pull the IV out of her hand, giving herself to the count of three and then yanking it out. Dammit, that hurt! She swung her legs to the side of the bed and lowered herself to the floor. The grey tile was cold, even through her thick socks. Nora pulled the door open slowly and peeked out in both directions. Since the coast was clear, she left her room and proceeded down the hallway.
Not wanting to get caught in the elevators, she decided to take the stairs. Which left her feeling winded and weak by the time she finished one flight, but she willed herself to keep going. When she finally reached the fifth floor, she looked out the small window in the door but saw nothing. The clank of the metal bar and the hinges squeaking as she carefully opened the door sounded deafening in the silence.
Why so silent, Nora wondered. The way they talked, this was the hub of the action, but there was no one there. Even the lights were dimmer than the other floors. As she walked further down the hallway, she noticed hash marks on the door – some more numerous than others – seemingly made with a black marker. The plastic hanging tray by each door held the same chart she had seen earlier, with the columns and the times, but these were all different. Belonging to the patient in that room, she guessed.
The ding of an arriving elevator echoed down the hallway and put her on alert. There was nothing to hide behind or beneath, and Nora didn’t have the energy to make it to the other end of the hall. She began trying doors and finally finding one unlocked, she slipped inside. Closing the door quickly, she pressed up against the window to see who was coming.
She could only hear her own rasping breath, swallowing hard and praying that a coughing fit wouldn’t give her away. But then she became aware of another presence in the room. She could smell the death and decay, heard the unmistakable guttural growling. She turned her head slowly to see a person lying in the bed. No, someone who used to be a person but now a monster. They must have died there and then turned. Handcuffed to the hospital bed, its rotting teeth snapped at the air as its hands desperately pulled against the restraints and clawed in her direction. “What the f—?!”

"Hey,"
"Hi," The corners of Ingrid's mouth tried to curl up into a warmer greeting, however she was no master of concealing her true feelings and failed miserably. She could feel her voice linger in the silence between them. A silence thick with many emotions and feelings. She stared at him, her eyes glazed with exhaustion and worry. Ingrid studied the stress lines that embroidered his facial expression. Ingrid and Negan didn't speak for a minute or two, though by reading the mutual feeling of the room, no words were needed to convey how worried they were of Nora.
"Not sure how you feel about that," "but one more day and I might give a shit about their goddamn rules."
"It's been two days. We should have heard something by now," Ingrid dropped her gaze away from Negan as she could feel the frustration begin to cut deeply within her. Turning her head to the side, she peered out the window at an even more dreary sight of barren streets full of protocol signs and caution tape sectioning off parts of what was their beautiful Fort. Ingrid knew nothing lasted forever, though she had been beginning to like the idea of this small community becoming their forever home. Seeing it begin to crumble tore her a little, but the thought of losing Nora in all of this madness would break her completely. "I thought that we were doing what was best for Nora - but what if I was wrong? What if we let her down? What if...," Ingrid's gaze still pointed out the window as she spoke out loud to Negan. Bracing herself, she didn't want to cry. She hated crying or showing signs of weakness, especially in front of him. Yet, she felt her whole world caving in around her at once. Instead of putting her complexion on the brink of an emotional burst on display for all to see, she hid it as her forehead folded forwards into the palms of her hands.

"It's been two days. We should have heard something by now,"
He'd known she would agree with him there. Maybe they would choose different ways, or rather would differ as for how far each of them was willing to go to take things into their own hands, but they damn both were willing to do just that; Taking things into their own hands. Negan's gaze was following hers to outside the window. This was not anymore the place they had secretly wished to become a place to stay. Yet, Negan never really wanted to stay forever. It had been a place, but not their place. Or just not his place? However, he'd had a different vision on his mind for the three of them; Maybe already long before they had settled here.
"I thought that we were doing what was best for Nora - but what if I was wrong? What if we let her down? What if...," Ingrid eventually spoke up again.
"Hey, listen.", Negan said harshly, yet Ingrid would know where this harshness was coming from, or rather where it was directed at. Also, he might be an insensitive asshole at times, but he wouldn't poke fun at somebody he cared for in a situation like this. Or maybe he wouldn't do so nowadays. God, it must be a family thing to have this good influence on him. Negan banished these thoughts, for they weren't of importance right now. "We both didn't do anything wrong. All we could do was to trust these people, so all we can do now is to check if they deserved this trust. You can believe me that, if I should find out they don't - I'm gonna let them pay." As his words were sounding a little bit too much like a mission of vengeance instead of one of rescue, Negan made a step in her direction and added less harshly: "Nora is one of the most badass women I've ever met. She survives shit, just as we did. Whatever they try to hide from us, it needs more than two days to strike her down."

Out of sheer instinct, Nora fumbled with the door handle and bolted back into the hallway, slamming into one of the doctors she’d just been trying to avoid.
“Nora?” Dr. Shaw blurted, his hands on her shoulders to steady her. “What are you doing here?”
She tried to right herself, her embarrassment at being recognized outweighed by the horror of what she’d seen. “What am I doing here? What … is that thing doing here?” she demanded, pointing toward the room. “It’s dangerous. It will kill everyone here.”
“Oh, nonsense,” the other doctor chimed in. “Mrs. Tilley hasn’t bitten anyone in at least the last week.”
Nora rounded on him in anger. “You think this is funny? That used to be a person – someone’s wife, or daughter, or sister. And you’re keeping it locked in a cage?”
“Nora, I can explain,” Dr. Shaw began solemnly. “Dr. Ecksley here and I are doing research.”
“Research?”
“Not that it’s any of your business, but we’re trying to gather information about this disease,” Ecksley explained. “Find out how long it takes from time of death to resurrection. You see, the incubation rate varies from person to person. Some take hours,” he said, pointing to a door with only a few hash marks. “Some…take days.” He then pointed to another doorway with several rows of hash marks. He continued walking down the hallway as Nora and Dr. Shaw followed.
“We thought at first that it was a virus spread through the bite of the infected,” Dr. Shaw added. “Easy enough to quarantine, isolate the infected and prevent it from spreading to the rest of the population. But then other people began to exhibit symptoms, ones who hadn’t been in contact with positive cases. Which means that the source could be airborne, waterborne – I’m afraid we just don’t know enough yet.”
Nora continued walking silently, passing one occupied room after another. “How many of them are in here?” she asked. “Do their families even know that they passed?”
“They’ll be informed in due time,” Ecksley stated plainly.
“We can’t risk causing a panic,” Shaw agreed.
“You’ve already got one, Doc,” Nora insisted. “The longer you leave people guessing, the worse it’ll be. And your…your research subjects, they need to be put down. All of them. Buried if you have the manpower and space, burned if you don’t. Does the Colonel know about this?”
Ecksley gave her a smile without mirth. “Colonel Lutrell signed off on the project,” he advised. “He understands that our efforts are necessary for the safety of the community.”
“Safety?!” Nora scoffed. “You are putting everyone in this building, everyone within these walls at risk! I wanna’ talk to the Colonel now.”
“I believe he’s coming by for a briefing this evening. Shame he won’t have time to speak with you.” Ecksley crossed his arms over his chest, clearly not planning to budge from his place. He looked over at Shaw to make it clear to the other doctor that he was expected to do the same.
Nora tried to appeal to the one she still considered a friend. “Shaw, you know I’m right. You have to let me go.”
"It's not my call, Nora," he protested.
“You’re still a very sick woman, Nora," Ecksley added, in a way that gave her chills at her own name. "Dr. Shaw couldn’t in good conscience let his patient leave this hospital in her current condition. In fact, you should probably stay up here where it’s quieter.”
Before Nora had time to react, the taller and stronger Ecksley had opened a door and pushed her through it. The door was then quickly closed and locked. She flung herself against it and began banging feverishly. “No! No, no, please! Please don’t do this!” she cried, till what little voice she had left was fading. She jostled the door handle, but it stubbornly stayed put. Through the narrow rectangle of glass, she could see the two doctors walking away. “Let me out, you son of a bitch!”
With a frustrated grunt and one last slam of both fists against the door, Nora found herself exhausted. She turned to actually take a look around the room that was now her prison cell and was somewhat grateful to find it empty. No research subjects here. She slid down the wall and crumpled to the floor, her eyes beginning to cloud with tears as she realized how very alone she now was.

"We both didn't do anything wrong. All we could do was to trust these people, so all we can do now is to check if they deserved this trust. You can believe me that, if I should find out they don't - I'm gonna let them pay."
Not only did Ingrid expect Negan's act of tough love, she appreciated it more than anything. Since knowing him, and actually really knowing him, he had helped her step out of her corner of vulnerability with thicker skin. The small, weak girl Ingrid once knew was morphing into a warrior. Some of that was internal changes she made along the way, but she also owed a lot of the person that she was today to Negan. And to Nora, too. Ingrid felt the emotions within her begin to simmer as she collected herself. She pulled her face out of her hands and peered down at her palms that were surprisingly dry before gazing upon him with eyes of a fighter. This was no time to cry.
"Nora is one of the most badass women I've ever met. She survives shit, just as we did. Whatever they try to hide from us, it needs more than two days to strike her down."
"This place made us let our guards down, maybe even go a little soft," An alarmed look dawned across Ingrid's face, as if something within her had woken up from it's slumber. She spoke abruptly as she brought herself to her feet just inches away from Negan, "And I don't know about you, but I don't wanna forget just how alive piercing rotters with my bow made me feel. And if they can't be trusted and you're gonna make them pay for whatever they're doing to our Nora...you can't do it empty handed." Ingrid's heart raced in her chest from the excitement that bubbled up from within. She knew Negan had been craving to feel his precious bat between his hands since the moment he gave it up. It was time for them to find that spark again and find their beloved Nora.

"This place made us let our guards down, maybe even go a little soft,"
Negan was glad that, finally, somebody spoke out loud what he was thinking for quite a while already. Maybe not even fully aware that he had, himself, but that was a fact. For a while, it had been satisfying, maybe even a little funny, to play ideal world, but now it was on time to get back out there - back into the real world.
"And I don't know about you, but I don't wanna forget just how alive piercing rotters with my bow made me feel. And if they can't be trusted and you're gonna make them pay for whatever they're doing to our Nora...you can't do it empty handed."
"Now, that's the girl I know.", Negan replied with an expression on his face that seemed to haven't been there for a long time. He felt the muscles around his jaw freeing themselves while something inside of him seemed to awake from a deep slumber. Lucille... Oh god fucking shit, had he missed her. He hadn't even realized how much until this very moment. How long had it been since she'd bashed into something, sending blood and guts everywhere around her? She really must be thirsty, just as he was. "Let's get back to business, I say."

Nora took several deep breaths, calm and measured, and swallowed hard. She brusquely wiped the tears from her eyes. No more self-pity, it was time to get to work. She'd had no intention of dying when she arrived at this hospital and that wasn't going to change now.
There were no obvious weapons in sight and nothing to help her force open the door. The window was sealed shut and even if it could be opened, it only offered a five-story drop. There was only a hospital bed, a small bathroom, and a set of upper and lower cabinets against the wall. She tore open the cabinet doors and pulled out the drawers, searching for anything, but finding only medical supplies. Nothing particularly sharp or threatening.
Maybe she could send a signal. That kind of thing worked in movies, right? Animated by the inspiration, she yanked the pillowcase off the pillow and quickly wrapped the fabric around her elbow. This would probably hurt like hell but she'd try to prevent any bleeding. She then went into the bathroom and slammed her elbow into the mirror above the sink. A few more impacts and it had shattered into some decent-sized fragments.
The fabric now covering her hand, Nora picked up one of the glass slivers from the floor and rushed to the window. She tried to gauge the angle of the sunlight, tilting the reflective surface this way and that. "Come on, come on, somebody look up," she urged the figures on the street below.

DWIGHTDwight had had enough of sitting around and waiting. Sherry had been worrying about her sister, Tina, since she'd been taken to the hospital three days ago. A touch of the flu, the doctors had said before leading her away. And if Sherry was worried, that meant he was worried. He wasn't getting a straight answer out of anyone. So it was time to pay a visit to the only other person who shared his low opinion of the people in power. Dwight walked over to his neighbor's house and began banging on the door, like he'd done so many mornings before. But now he wasn't just trying to annoy his grumpy coworker. "Hey, Negan!" he called. "You home?"
