"Spleen -- or what's left of it -- 150 grams," Jemma stated, as she removed the organ from the scale and placed it in a waiting silver tray. She was dictating the autopsy of a homicide victim. A rather messy one, at that, which made her glad to have the Zephyr's lab to herself for the moment. This was a mysterious death that they had been asked to look into, by a friend of a friend of someone with powerful political ties. Otherwise, another junkie who'd met a violent end in a New York city alleyway who wouldn't warrant a second look.
But the cause of death and the condition of the young man's corpse had flummoxed the NYPD coroner and the FBI pathologist, so someone had called in a favor from SHIELD. Jemma still didn't understand it but she had her marching orders. And frankly after the mind-bending craziness of being stuck in the Mainframe, a little routine dissection was almost welcome. It had the added benefit of giving her and Fitz an excuse to avoid a very difficult conversation for a little longer. However, Jemma was no closer to having an answer than the previous investigators.
"Simmons, how goes it?" Coulson asked from the doorway.
"Still stumped, sir," she answered, hitting pause on her dictaphone. "It looks quite literally as if this man was sliced open in a dozen directions at once. Cause of death is obviously exsanguination, but method of death? I've no idea what sort of weapon could do this."
"A new threat we haven't seen before? How exciting," he remarked in his usual deadpan way.
"Well, Fitz is using the dwarves to take a look at the alleyway where he was found, see if there's anything he can find," Jemma reported. "And Daisy is searching through surveillance of the nearby businesses."
"Good, but I'm afraid we'll have to put this on the back burner. Unidentified aircraft entered airspace over Norway earlier today."
"Friendly or no?"
"Not sure yet," Coulson advised. "That's why we're on the welcome wagon. Wheels up in 10."
"Yes, sir." She quickly peeled off her rubber gloves and secured all her work in the lab to prepare for their hasty departure.
