"Ray!" He jumped and dropped his snack on the ground. You still wanna' help?" He did indeed, better than sitting around and dreaming about food. He stared at the vines and the metal bits and smirked, "I'm gonna' string up a perimeter around the camp, make sure we can hear anyone that tries to sneak up on us again."
"Count me in, I love a good DIY project." Ray smiled and started to untangle the vines.

"Count me in, I love a good DIY project."
Ana smiled as Ray got right to work, grateful that she wouldn't need to be persuasive. "Thanks," she said, taking a seat in the sand. "Remember, it doesn't have to be pretty, it just have to work." She busied herself quietly for a while, sorting pieces of shrapnel and trying to devise the best way of linking together this makeshift motion sensor.
"How long you been married?" Ana asked of her crafting co-worker. She wasn't one for small talk, but the silence could be equally annoying.

Late morning and the rest of the day passes.
It is now late evening. Most people have already settled down for the night.
The crew from the main survivors who trekked out to the cockpit decided to camp there until morning and a group of Others is descending upon the Tailies' camp.

Sleep was usually hard to come by there on the beach. Ana Lucia would divide her attention between the fire, the other survivors, and the treeline. But since she and Ray had spent so much time that day working on a makeshift perimeter alarm and encircling their camp with the tangle of vines and metal, her eyes insisted on closing almost as soon as her head hit her arm tucked beneath her head as she laid down on the sand. They had found no evidence of the visitors while out there in the jungle, and Ana found it hard to believe they could come and go without a trace. But then again, this was their home turf.

Harley's large eyes were heavy with fatigue, yet she kept the pair fixed protectively on her sister Lillian who was sound asleep beside her as the late hours of the night crept in. Harley knew that she should be sleeping too, but with everything that had happened in the last couple of days the wheels in her brain were constantly keeping her up. And the new discovery from early this morning definitely did not help her current case. She worried that something might be after them, or someone. Even the professor did not dismiss her theory. Though, perhaps he was right in thinking that maybe they were thinking too deeply into ideas that could be nothing more than just fantasies of their wildest nightmares. The stillness of Lillian's porcelain complexion glowing against the shadows of the campfire was the last thing that Harley saw before her eyes finally gave in to her sleep deprivation.

Ray looked at his activities as a crafting project, it got him through the hard labor of it. The vines and metal were a nice touch and he was grateful to have Ana and Eko to offer protection. After they were done, Ray looked over the work and nodded in approval. Cracking a few jokes with Ana before washing up a bit in the water.
The fire was so warm, it was like a blanket. He curled up on the sand and let his eyes close, unaware of anything but his own fatigue.

Vivian made herself useful and gathered some extra vines and metal for Ray and Ana. Helping to attach the metal onto the vines, it was nice to be useful. After her last jungle adventure, she was happy to never set food inside again.
Settling in next to Ray, she smiled when he placed a fatherly kiss on her forehead- chuckling. She yawned and closed her eyes, trying hard not to think about where they were. Trying hard not to cry herself to sleep yet again- she missed her family.

"Behind you! Behind you!"
Ana wasn't sure if she was dreaming or not. She had so many nightmares these days. Noises, voices, were they real?
"Help us, please!"
A child's cry jolted her awake, and she realized the voices were real. It was them. They had slipped into their camp, undetected, and were attacking them again.
"The kids! They took the kids!" Libby was shouting. Ana couldn't let that happen, wouldn't let these people take the kids or anyone else. She was here to protect her people. Now fully awake and focused, she launched herself headlong at the nearest stranger in tattered khaki clothing and knocked them to the ground.

"The kids! They took the kids!"
Jolting upright, Harley had been startled awake from her slumber by the shrill of Libby's terror, though before she could fully register what was happening in their camp she felt someone forcefully grab her. Everything was still rather fuzzy to her half woken state, yet Harley screamed at the top of her lungs and kicked in any direction she possibly could to get away. Suddenly, she heard a loud groan of pain and she was released. Tripping through the sand, Harley managed to bring herself to her feet as she began to run but not making it very far as she began to trip and fall once more, but this time landing in the helpful arms of the professor.
"Derek! Help...me...," Was all that Harley was able to muster in her state of sheer panic and fright as she managed to catch her breath, yet before she could attempt to form a sentence, she felt someone come up behind her and began to tear her away from Derek's grasp.

Ray had only just started to drift off when he heard the cries and screams. Instantly he was at alert and stood from his place on the sand. Looking around and trying to see what was going on, "Oh god," The sound of Libby's terror had his own set in. Why on earth would they go after the children? Ray found the closest stick he could find and was ready for the attack.

Vivian had drifted off but was up instantly when she heard screaming. She was about to get up but that is when she felt her body being pulled from her spot on the ground. She tried to scream but she didn't get a chance as something pressed firmly against her nose and mouth. The world spun and she was out cold before she could react.

"The kids! They took the kids!"
It was only then that Derek got jolted out of his concentration on his little notebook with all those photos, notes and scribbles in it. Probably most of the others had been sleeping already but not Derek. He was used to working late hours, one of the reasons his ex-wife had started arguments with him. Anyways, it seemed his assumption of everyone else already sleeping was wrong after all.
Derek took the screaming serious, especially because of the message within, and hurried to rush out of his tent - though not without taking his time to tuck the notebook back into the bag that was more like an chaotic accumulation of miscellaneous odds and ends than what one might expect to be the belongings from a professor, or rather ex-professor.
Outside he tried to get an overview of the situation that already seemed to have gotten out of control. And before he knew it, he had become part of it himself, as suddenly someone was landing right in his arms, pleading for help.
"Derek! Help...me...,"
"Harley! I..."
One moment of hesitation or actually rather of confusion had been enough to allow the attacker coming up from behind her and tearing the girl away from his grasp. "No! Harley!"
Unfortunately, Derek was anything but a fighter. Maybe a fighter when it came to science issues or to the hours one could stay awake while brooding over something, but not a fighter in the physical meaning, for which he blamed himself a lot right now.
He felt like the chaos around closed in on him so that he wasn't able to do anything about it. And while everyone else was bustling around, Derek just stood in place like paralyzed, his eyes still watching the spot where Harley had been pleading at him only seconds ago, and his arms still held out to nothing but a bygone moment in which he should have helped the poor girl but hadn't been able to.

Ana had grabbed the nearest weapon at hand, a rock, and slammed it against the woman's head. She finally stopped resisting and fell limp. Ana took a brief moment to fully take stock of the movement and sounds around her.
"They took Jim! and Eli! Nancy's gone! They're gone!" Libby yelled.
They had come back, as stealthily as they had done before, and now they had taken more of their people. Ana's attention shifted back to the now motionless woman before her. "Which way did they go? Which way did they go?!!" she demanded of the stranger. "Wake up! Who are you? Talk to me!"
"She's dead, Ana," Goodwin declared, placing a hand on her shoulder to break her out of this futile interrogation. "She's dead."
Dammit, Ana cursed under her breath. Witnesses were no good if they couldn't talk, but maybe this woman still had something to say. Ana began to rifle through her tattered clothing for any piece of evidence that could be useful.

"No! Harley!"
"Derek!" Harley's exasperated pleads were startled into a scream as she felt forceful hands try to tug her away from Derek's grasp. She gasped as the hands on her were replaced with strong arms wrapping tightly around her waist, and tried to scream for Derek again but after she got dragged away from her friend, everything happened so fast. The dimly lit beach and the horrific screams melded together in one big blur as she felt her legs and feet getting dragged through the gritty sand against her will. Then, the entire world went black, and Harley could have been dead for all she knew.

In one pocket, Ana found a silver rectangular object and held it up to the fire light. She pulled the blade from its casing and studied it. Seemed old but still pointy enough.
"What are you doing?" Goodwin asked insistently. "Is that a knife?"
Ignoring the question, Ana shoved the knife into the pocket of her jeans and continued to search the woman. The immediate danger was over as her friends seem to have disappeared back into the jungle. Eventually Ana found a crumpled piece of paper and unfolded it. There was writing on it, in English. She moved closer to the fire in order to read it.
"What is that?" Goodwin inquired.
"It's a list," she replied, trying to wrap her head around what she was reading. This attack wasn't random, it was targeted. They were being watched, studied. Selected.
"A list of what?" Libby prompted.
"Nine -- of us," she answered.

As the noises around died somewhat down, Derek was still standing like glued to the spot. Every voice, same as every sound in general, seemed to lower to no more than a dull echo inside his head. He didn't even care about them right now. All he cared about was his own inability to not have been able to protect the poor girl. Why, just why would they kidnap her and seemingly also some more of these people? That didn't make sense, or did it?
"...""A list of what?"
"Nine -- of us,"
At that Derek's head slowly turned around towards Ana Lucia, still saying nothing though. Why would they have a list with nine of their names on it? Should Derek have focused his research on the islanders rather than on the island itself? His sense-perception partly came back as he produced a cigarette pack from the pocket of his jeans to get a clear mind. Smoking always had that effect on him, even if it might have a very different effect on other people watching him doing just that while everything around was a total mess.

Ray took notice that several of their friends had been taken. Ray was still trying to gather himself, he still held the stick but it never made contact with anything or anyone.
"A list of what?"
"Nine -- of us," Ray still couldn't wrap his head around this.
Slowly he made his way over to the group, trying not to go into a full panic. "We're not safe here."

"We're not safe here."
"We're not gonna' be safe anywhere until we figure out who these people are and what they want," Ana responded. When she noticed the large black man returning from the trees, she rushed over to meet him. "Did you see them? Where'd they go?" He met her questions with a negative shake of his head. "Nothing?" she persisted. "They drag 9 people into the jungle -- the kids -- and there's no sign of them?"
He didn't even bother with a movement of his head while he continued walking, but she pursued him. "Now's not a good time to talk?" He had been helpful in protecting them that first night, but now the strong silent act was not helpful. "What needs to happen to make you say something?!"
"Hey, calm down," one of the men, Nathan, interjected. "Let's figure this out."
"Calm down?" Ana repeated in disbelief, rounding on him. "Let's figure this out? Here are the names of every single person they took," she stated, holding up the list for him to see. "All 9 of them. What they look like, what they were wearing. One of them had a list of us."
"They could have gotten our names from the people they already took," Nathan guessed.
"Nobody knew anybody's names the first night," Ana reminded him.

"Maybe they're watching us?" Nathan continued to conjecture.
But he was talking a little more than he should be. Some suspects decided to get chatty when they were caught. "You were gone for two hours yesterday," Ana observed.
"What?" he sputtered indignantly.
"Where were you?"
"I was going to the bathroom."
Once again, Goodwin decided to break into her beginning interrogation. "Hey, stop! We're all scared. Let's not get paranoid here. We don't know anything."
"He's right," Bernard agreed. "Why would they try to infiltrate us? That's crazy!"
"Well, whoever they are, they know we are here," Libby summed up. "We need to leave this beach."
Moving into the island's interior might mean more risk to all of them. But staying on the beach, just waiting for another ambush was equally foolish. She turned to Goodwin for his guidance. "You said we needed to keep the signal fire burning."
"I think it's time we let it go out," he declared with a resigned sigh.

All throughout the night the image of Harley's hand slipping his had kept preying on his mind. There had been moments though when it was difficult to figure out whether it had been his memory or images of a nightmare agonizing him during the few hours that he'd actually been able to find some sleep.
The sun had barely come up on the horizon when Derek had made a decision. He couldn't just laying around here, haunted by his own guilt, while Harley and the other people that had been kidnapped only some hours ago, might have been in great danger or, heaven forbid, already dead by now. It actually had been this last thought that had him rise with the early sun to do what he should have done right away - going after them.
***
Although Derek had a feeling that every further minute could be one too much, he took at least his time to pack all of his most important belongings, for he was a man of science, and a man of science never rushed into something without being prepared.
Ready to leave the camp behind, Derek threw one last look around. He'd witnessed how these people, especially Ana Lucia, had started to accuse each other and how they were doing anything but working together. He really wouldn't like to end up as the next culprit, for he was sure at some point they might find out things that they could be using against him.
With one last nod that was to hurry himself on, Derek left the camp towards the direction They had dragged nine of these people. Finally, it was on time to go into action instead of just reading a journal...

It had been a sleepless night for most of them, but Ana was satisfied that Eko was keeping watch. Even though the decision had been made to leave the beach and move inland, they wouldn't be able to do so until sunrise. She had no idea which direction they would go in or what they might find. And the possibility that one of their group was a spy for the people that had taken them just added another layer of fear and uncertainty.
Ana knew that she could trust Eko since the strangers had tried to kill him on the first night. And Bernard since she had found him in a plane seat stuck in the tree canopy. Ray had been on the flight crew, and her gut told her that Libby and Vivian were genuine as well. But everyone else would have to be treated as suspect from here on out.
"Come on, everyone. We need to get moving," she announced, gathering a few things of her own.

Ray didn't get much sleep at all, after the attack he could not relax. The lack of sleep would hit him later but right now all he could do was think of his friends. They had known each other for a short time but that didn't make it any less jarring.
"Come on, everyone. We need to get moving," Ray was fine with getting off the beach but more terrified about heading into the jungle. Even with Eko and Ana, he felt uneasy about the whole thing.
"Agreed," Ray would normally be cracking jokes at this point but he just didn't have the energy. He also knew when the time was inappropriate. "We're going to be alright, I know it." He gave her a smile and walked along beside her.
