Johnny Depp to star in epic crime drama
Johnny Depp is to star in and produce a movie about a man who escapes jail in Australia and flees to India.
Shantaram, an adaptation of Gregory David Roberts' bestselling novel, is set in the 1980s, reports Empire.
The central character Lin, to be played by Depp, ends up in Bombay after his escape from a high security prison.
He meets Prabakar, a guide, who introduces him to the shady Indian underworld of beggars and gangsters.
Lin's epic story includes an apprenticeship with the Bombay mafia, fighting in Afghanistan, working as a doctor in a Bombay slum, drug addiction and - inevitably - falling in and out of love.
