***INARA enters from the Infirmary and Common Room***
INARA
Inara placed the alcohol and swabs down at her vanity as she sat. She leaned toward her mirror for a closer at the damage to her lip. When she put her hand to her face, she was flooded with memories of earlier. The feel of his hand cupping her chin as he leaned in close, gazing at her lips. It was such an innocent thing; him checking the damage done by the bounty hunter but the flood of intense emotions that had overtaken her scared her out of the momentary daze and she made a quick exit. Did he know how close he was to shattering the wall she'd carefully constructed around herself? It was why she told him she was leaving. One word from him was all that it would have taken to change her mind. Stay. But he said nothing and he let her walk away which was why she had to leave.
Inara closed her eyes as she imagined that moment earlier today. Imagined what could have happened if she hadn't taken the coward's way out.

There was a light blinking on the shuttle's wave generator, indicating a waiting message. It wasn't uncommon for Inara to have waiting messages. It was the nature of her profession. There was one among the waiting messages that wasn't from a potential customer, however. It was a message from out of the past and a path not taken.
"Hello, Inara. It's Cav. I know it's been a while since we last had a chance to talk and that's my fault. You don't talk in a while and then you realize that and feel like it's been too long but waiting just makes it worse. Eventually you just give up on the idea. You aren't someone I'm willing to give up on, Inara. No poetry this time. Just a hello that is long overdue. I'm sorry it took so long."

INARA
The blinking light of a message pulled her out of her reverie. Inara poured alcohol onto a swab and carefully dabbed at her cut lip, wondering who had left her a message. Most likely it was a client or potential client. After today's events, she wasn't sure if their destination plans would remain the same. She was also currently not in the right state of mind to be exchanging pleasantries with a client, nor was she at her most presentable. But it couldn't hurt to view the wave. Perhaps it would help start the process of mending the crack in her carefully constructed wall.
She surveyed at the damage as she fastened the lid back onto the alcohol. With the dried blood cleaned up, her lip didn't look as bad but it was still noticeable. She'd have to postpone taking any clients until it healed which suited her just fine. She needed a break.
Inara settled in front of her screen and retrieved the message. A smile touched her lips as Cav's face appeared on the screen and by the end of his short and sweet message, she found herself in much better spirits. Glancing down at her casual yet decent form of dress and lack of make-up made her hesitate a moment before deciding to return his wave. She knew he wouldn't mind because he saw her as more than just a Companion.
"Cav, this is Inara. Are you receiving transmissions?"

CAVANAUGH VIA WAVE
"This is Cav. Receiving loud and clear. I-" He stopped suddenly, the smile that had crept onto his face fading. "What happened and why am I not allowed to break the person responsible? Please tell me that it is because they've already paid for their crimes." He shook his head, then continued rather sheepishly. "I'm sorry. I shouldn't be prying. Are you okay?"

INARA
Inara's hand subconsciously went to her lip in a momentary lapse of self-consciousness before she demurely returned her hand to rest in her lap. "It's only a minor injury. It'll heal in no time," she said with a small reassuring smile, carefully avoiding opening the wound. "An... unexpected visitor let himself aboard Serenity. The situation has been remedied so I'll have to take a rain-check on your chivalrous offer." She made light of the situation in hopes of easing any remaining doubts or anger he may have on her behalf. "How have you been? You're looking well."

CAVANAUGH VIA WAVE
"Living the dream, as they say," Cavanaugh answered with a chuckle. "If all works well, I have a semi-long term contract with an acquaintance of yours. This trip is a trial run but if all goes well, I'll be playing personal pilot to Ghanima Atma." He turned to look at his passenger. "Want a few minutes to catch up?"

"Oh, well that's wonderful news!" Inara said sincerely. She looked off to the side of the screen, waiting for Ghanima's face to appear. "Hello, Ghani. It's been too long since our paths have crossed. The ball on Persephone, I believe it was?"

CAVANAUGH VIA WAVE
Richard listened as the two Companions conversed. There was an intricate dance of words as they spoke, he was certain of it. Far more was conveyed in that conversation than he was aware of. Likely there was a sophisticated code, practiced until it because second nature. Either that or he was being paranoid.
"Keeping busy?" he asked, when he finally had the chance to talk to Inara again. "Not meaning as a Companion," he corrected suddenly, feeling the sudden, unwelcome blush turning his ears crimson. "I mean with other things."

INARA
A small smile touched her lips as she saw him blush at his unintended double meaning but other than that, she showed no reaction and carefully avoided him any further feelings of embarrassment. "There's never a dull moment aboard Serenity. Living here does keep you on your toes." It was easy to see that she loved it there, despite the unfortunate incidents they're sometimes faced with.
"And you? Have you been keeping yourself out of trouble?"

CAVANAUGH via Wave
"Trouble is a relative term," Cavanaugh said. "Nothing too serious. A few minor breakdowns and a run in with a little weasel who slipped me some counterfeit cash but nothing I couldn't handle. Dull would be a good term for it and unlike some, I enjoy the occasional moment of tedium. I've had too much excitement in my life to want to embrace it as a constant. Don't forget there is a standing offer of a footrub, if we ever end up in the same place at the same time."
Speaking to Inara brought into sharp contrast how much he missed her. It wasn't quite to the point of being physical pain but there was a sensation in the pit of his stomach. It was a hopeless situation. Inara was millions of miles away and like to remain so. She was a Companion. There was also the small issue of the Serenity's captain and his strange, unpredictable and volatile relationship with Inara. They could turn into lovers with the same ease that they could become enemies. Dealing with that sort of passion was something like trying to defuse a time bomb, while wearing mittens and a blindfold.

Mal
**Enter's from Infirmary and Common Area**
In his customary fashion Mal approached the hatch to Inara's shuttle with the intent of engaging her, most likely without her consent, when the voices within stopped the Captain in his tracks. He leaned closer to better hear what was being discussed.
"I've had too much excitement in my life to want to embrace it as a constant. Don't forget there is a standing offer of a footrub, if we ever end up in the same place at the same time."
Mal did not recognize the man's voice nor did he care for where he thought the "gentleman" might be steering the conversation, but despite every fiber urging him on he could not step over the threshold... not this time. Whatever she was planning and whoever that involved... she had made her decision, he thought as he quietly turned and left.

INARA
After ending her transmission with Richard, Inara sat in silence, a ghost of a smile still playing on her lips. He'd managed to distract her from recent events but as her reflection in the blank monitor came into focus, so did reality. She did not mention that she planned to leave Serenity. She'd said it out loud to Mal in the heat of the moment so she felt there was no turning back. Saying it out loud to anybody else only made the decision more of a reality and she wasn't ready to face it, nor the comments or looks she'd have to endure from the crew until she was off board. There was also the possibility of them, Kaylee in particular, trying to talk her out of it and she was afraid she'd be too easily swayed into staying.
Inara gingerly pressed her fingertips to the split in her lip and was relieved to find the bleeding had stopped. It would be at least a week before she would be presentable. Seeing any clients was out of the question. Her injury would lead to questions that would be difficult to answer without endangering Simon and River. Worse, if word got back to The Guild that a registered Companion had been physically harmed, it could lead to a full fledged investigation that would bring the entire crew under scrutiny.
Inara sent word to The Guild that she would be out of contact for the next week, adding that her video feed was malfunctioning as explanation for the written message.
With one of the many weights lifted from her mind, Inara lit some incense and lowered herself onto one of the cushions, hoping meditation would help quiet her mind further.

INARA
With too much still on her mind, Inara was finding meditation difficult. Her concern over Kaylee outweighed her previous decision to give Kaylee time to seek her out. But seeking out Kaylee may lead to a run-in with Mal which she dreaded after their last confrontation.
Don't be a coward, she chastised as she stood up and collected the items she'd borrowed from Simon. Returning the items would give her an excuse to see if Kaylee was still by Simon's side. If she was, Inara would be satisfied for the time being that Kaylee was not alone and could easily excuse herself to let the two be.

***Inara and River enter from Cargo Bay***
As Inara neared her bed with the support of River, she was flooded with relief. She'd been worried she wouldn't make it but by sheer stubborn willpower, here she finally was. She was immensely grateful that Monty had happened across her when he had. If not, who knows where she'd be right now. The little bit of fight she had mustered up had only temporarily distracted her attacker and she'd known she wouldn't make it out of the alley before he'd caught up with her again. She made a mental note to reach out to Monty to express her gratitude.
Inara was also grateful for the fact that it seemed they were out of danger for the time being. The dead weight of an unconscious crew member--two if you counted Kaylee's fading in and out--would have added unnecessary complications and distractions.
Kaylee. Her poor mei-mei. As she fell onto her bed, she vowed to also find out who had been responsible and was again annoyed at her situation. She might miss important information while she slept off the sedative and knew Mal and the crew would most likely wave her off and tell her they had things under control if she pressed for information.
"Thank you, River," she said sleepily. "Do me one more favor?" Fading quickly, she didn't wait for an answer. "Let me know everything you find out about what happened. But be discrete." Inara closed her eyes and surrendered to the sedative.

"Thank you, River,""Do me one more favor?""Let me know everything you find out about what happened. But be discrete."
River kept watching the sleepy face. Inara's eyes were closing, before River was going to give an answer. Did she already fell asleep? River's hand stretched out to brandish it in front of the closed eyes. No reaction. For good measure she bend her ear over Inara's lips. A warm breathe was tickling it and made her giggle. "I will do that.", River answered the sleeping beauty's favor after all, before she turned her head and gave a kiss to Inara's forehead. Hm. Sleeping Beauty didn't awake. Who believes in fairytales anyway... With a shrug of her shoulders River was going to leave.

Mal **Enters from the Bridge**
The captain hesitated at the threshold for a moment or two and when it became clear she had to be in there alone, he took the initiative. Quietly but with a purpose he did a quick survey of the room and for a second thought the shuttle was empty.
That was when he saw her. Inara lay on the bed and she seemed to be sleeping. It must be a peaceful slumber from the look of it but it was better safe than sorry. Mal didn't know what the extent of her ordeal had been. Now that things were slowing down his concern was growing steadily.
Slowly approaching the companion he needed to make this quick. Last thing he needed was company. Or Inara waking up. The captain checked her pulse. That was strong and steady. He then placed the back of his hand on her forehead to check her temperature. Had to just be a sedative. But why? As he thought of the motivations he realised he was staring very intently at her face. She was... stirring! Mal took a step back and waited to make a move until he was sure she was still out.

Flashes of images, of color, broke through the black, dreamless sleep as the sedative began to wear off. Other senses began to fade in and out though her foggy mind couldn't tell the difference between imagined and real. The sound of a shuttle door. The crew laughing around the table. Kaylee sitting in front of Inara's vanity, giggling as she relayed another awkward Simon moment as Inara brushed her hair. Complete silence. Clothing material shifting as a person very near moved. The feel of silk sheets under her fingertips. Something warm against her forehead.
Each flash more vivid than the last until she finally pulled through the haze enough to peer through heavy eyelids. Had she seen Mal standing there? Was she imagining things? Inara addressed the real or imaginary Mal all the same. "Are we being manly and impulsive again?" she asked groggily as she shifted to her side toward him, hugging one of the pillows to herself as she half waited for an answer and half dozed.

Mal
And she wasn't... Inara was awake, sort of. "Are we being manly and impulsive again?" she asked, eyes peering through heavy lids. Her expression did not diminish her allure from the previous moment. If anything it intensified as the captain now felt an almost overwhelming series of emotions sweep through his chest and right over his head. As she shifted to her side toward him, hugging a pillow to herself, one perfectly smooth leg slipped through the slit in the side of her dress. Now it was time to look away!
Just like that he was put on the defensive! He had seen the companion hundreds of times but this was a whole new situation for him. What the hell was it with this shuttle!? On came the uncontrollable babble of one caught red handed. "I was just checking on- you had a long day so I figured- Wash and everyone's... Dinner's in ten." His face went strangely blank after that last remark... Dinner's in ten? He abruptly turned and vanished back the way he had come. He leaned against the comforting metal bulkhead of the cargo bay beyond the reach of all those... wiles.
Down the opposite side of the catwalk Mal could see Simon, Jayne, and Wash just exiting the other shuttle. Good! He needed a distraction. Not wasting a moment he scooted up the passage to the galley to wait with the others.

After allowing herself to be pulled under a couple more times, Inara grudgingly opened her eyes. She turned to her back, stretching as she blinked up at the ceiling, feeling lost in time and place. Where she was was obvious but why did she have no recollection of what day it was or even remember actually going to bed? Worried, she shot up to a sitting position, looking around. She wasn't with a client, was she? That would have been bad form to leave him--or her--unattended and to their own devices.
Seeing her shuttled was in slight disarray assured her that she was alone as making sure her shuttle was neat and immaculate before entertaining was a must. Inara's hand automatically rubbed at a sore spot on her upper arm, the sting of it bringing the memories rushing back. She'd been drugged. River had helped her to bed and she'd made River promise to tell her everything she'd missed. But knowing River, what she'd witness or heard may not come across quite the same when she relayed them to Inara. And Kaylee! Inara was worried about her.
That last thought was enough to have her jumping out of bed. She grabbed hold of the nearest piece of furniture to steady herself as the quick movement nearly sent her toppling. "Whoa, steady," she said as the room spun. The sedative still had a lingering effect on her system. In truth, she should still keep to her bed for another couple of hours but that wasn't going to happen. "Take it slow and easy," she said to herself. With a steadying breath, Inara let go and slowly, carefully, made her way to her vanity.
A memory hit her as she was touching up her lipstick and she paused. Mal, unintelligibly babbling as he stood over her. Inara caught her reflection, eyebrows drawn together and a frown of confusion. "It had been a dream, hadn't it?" she asked her reflection. Mal certainly did the occasionally unintelligible but never babbling as if she'd gotten to him and though she'd tried to use her wiles on him in the past for the benefit of getting him to do the right thing, he'd never shown that he'd been a bit affected by them. Quite the opposite. It must have been a dream then. But that thought caused her to frown again. Dreaming of Mal? She rolled her eyes. Certainly not. She ignored that worrying thought as she continued.
With hair and make-up touched up and a change into a casual, sleeveless red dress, Inara headed for the dining area.

***Inara enters from Bridge***
Inara paced with angry strides, silently cursing Niska, doubly so the few times she stumbled or bumped into a piece of furniture. The adrenaline was doing a good job of burning off most of the remaining sedative, making her footing steadier with each lap.
How dare he crack the invisible shield of protection and safety she thought had surrounded her for the simple fact she was a companion? Companions were held in high regard and well protected. Atherton had been stupid enough to threaten her and raise a hand to her and he'd paid the price. She was angry at her own foolishness, thinking she was untouchable. She knew there were dangers when she decided to leave the companion house. It was maybe even a small part of what drew her to the decision. Adventure, see the universe, have a few thrilling encounters with less savory people and places, perhaps a little flirting with danger on occasion.
But not this. Not this shuddering fear that a psychotic madman had nearly gotten hold of her and thrown her to his men, turning what was supposed to be a beautifully deep and meaningful joining of two bodies, minds, and spirits into a nightmarish desecration of a person's body, mind, and soul. How dare he?

Anger was not solving anything. It barely managed to help her mask the fear she denied she felt, even to herself. Anger only muddled the mind. She needed to think, to come up with a plan. A solution to the problem at hand, she thought in an emotionally disconnected, business-like manner. Something to put all her concentration into.
Step 1, relax. Clear the mind," she thought as she chose a calming lavender incense and arranged her meditation pillows. Inara calmly and gracefully assumed her meditation position and took a deep, calming breath and began easing into relaxation.

**Mal enters from the Bridge**
Walking down the catwalk Reynolds stopped at the base of the ramp that lead up to the crew's quarters. Ahead of him standing by the door to Inara's Shuttle was Jayne. He was listening intently. To what Mal could only imagine but the man had a orgasmic expression on his face. "Shouldn't you be in your bunk? Jayne? Better yet I have something for you to do." He closed the distance with the man and got a little close for comfort. "Get down to the med bay and find out as much as you can about our guest. She needs some doctoring right enough but I'd like to know why, and where she came from. Besides Cavanaugh's ship. Before that."
The Captain stepped aside and let Jayne pass. He waited a moment for the large man to squeeze by and head down the stairs to the cargo bay below. Mal started to walk through the hatch but then he paused. Gritting his teeth he raised his hand and held it suspended there for a few moments. Finally he brought it down and knocked a couple times on the edge of the hatchway and waited.

"Shouldn't you be in your bunk? Jayne? Better yet I have something for you to do."
"Whoa!", Jayne jumped up, almost got a heart attack at the Captain's sudden arrive. "Hey Mal, this is not..." Normally he even wouldn't have tried to appologize at all, but this was about Mal and Inara. Not that Mal would ever check her come-to-bed eyes, she was throwing at him at times. Well, if he was Mal, he would have immediately...
Suddenly Mal was standing right in front of him. "Get down to the med bay and find out as much as you can about our guest. She needs some doctoring right enough but I'd like to know why, and where she came from. Besides Cavanaugh's ship. Before that."
"Right, Capt'n.", Jayne replied with a nod of his head. For another moment he just stood there, obviously waiting for Mal to enter Inara's shuttle and to peek through the open door. But instead the Captain was waiting for him to pass and to do what he was told to. With a last dirty smile Jayne vanished and head down the stairs. "Sǎoxìng...", he whispered while walking.

Inara could practically feel Jayne's intrusion, even from the other side of her door. She made a mental note to renew her warning that violation of her privacy would be hazardous to his manhood, but for now, she tried shutting it out and continuing.
Muffled voices outside her door pulled at her mind and she sighed with the realization that meditation would have to wait. Mal, she guessed, was giving Jayne an earful. The talking stopped and Inara braced herself, ready for Mal to walk in unannounced and without warning in his usual manly and impulsive manner. Instead, there was a knock at her door. Surely that couldn't be Mal.
Inara was surprised. The scene she'd envisioned taking place outside her shuttle must have been incorrect. Her instincts were usually spot on. Perhaps it was Richard? Intrigued, rather than calling out for the person to enter, she went to the door and opened it.
"Mal," she said, her brows lifted to match the surprised tone of her voice. She stepped aside and invited him in with a graceful motion of her hand. "To what do I owe the formal visit?" she asked as she closed the door. She couldn't help teasing about his having knocked. There was amusement in her smile as she turned toward him and waited for one of his quippy replies.

He didn't have to wait long before he was ushered inside. "Mal, to what do I owe the formal visit?" Inara said as an amused smile appeared on her face. The wiles? The Captain's shields went up! He wasn't going to lose his cool like he did the last time he was in the companions shuttle. His face was stern, unyielding. But for a second it cracked as he noticed ever so slightly that something was wrong.
Her brow was creased from some tension, her soft skin hadn't quite returned to its usual calm. Her posture was starting to relax but it wasn't settled completely. Her cheeks were slightly flushed. She was angry. At least her jaw wasn't clenched so she couldn't be mad at him... Could she? Had he driven her so far away from the ship which put her in that situation? Stop! Mal had to tell himself. She was staring, he needed to say something. "Inara, I... Have you been to see Simon?"

Inara had attempted to make this one of their light and airy interactions. The kind where they volleyed playful quips and sarcastic jabs at one another. She was partial to this type of interaction with him as she found it a fun, mostly safe form of flirting, though she'd never admit to flirting with Mal. Every now and again, it helped ease the tension that would build up between them. It was easier to flirt with what lay below the service and brush it off as a harmless banter session, then bury it again and continue ignoring it was there. Much easier than when things turned serious as they did now.
She found herself caught in another of their odd moments. They both silently studied each other, trying to extract what the other was thinking or feeling through the thick, nearly impenetrable walls they'd built up around themselves and between each other.
"Inara, I... Have you been to see Simon?"
"I checked myself out of the infirmary before he had a chance to see to me. It wasn't necessary for me to be there in the first place." It was difficult to keep her walls steady and strong when he was serious and looked as if he cared. Facing him at close proximity only made it worse.
She moved to her meditation area and began tidying as she continued. "It was only a sedative." She picked up the lavender incense, putting out its flame in a small decorative glass filled with sand and other incense sticks. "I just needed to sleep it off." Inara casually brushed off any notion of importance as she started to align the pillows in a neat row.

The captain picked up fairly quickly that Inara did not want to talk about what had happened. She was doing that thing she did where she started cleaning up. Rearranging everything. Messing with her incense. He was pushing her even further. The game was wearing on him at this particular moment. Without a goal in mind it tended to do that. Mal just needed to sit down as he threw himself onto one of her couches with a sigh. His boots went up onto the table nearby.
He could change the subject if that's what she wanted. "A sedative... Well at least it wasn't your old friend Ath, trying to take you away from me, us. I haven't been brushing up on my swing." He was batting a thousand as he realized what he had done as soon as he had done it. Ask! "May I?" Reynolds blurted out though he did not move from his spot. Better to ask forgiveness than permission. Hopefully she didn't try to throw him out.

"A sedative... Well at least it wasn't your old friend Ath, trying to take you away from me, us. I haven't been brushing up on my swing."
Inara brushed off his slip up as it was easier to let them both believe it was a simple slip of the tongue. However, a smile touched her lips at the memory of attempting to teach him to use a sword.
"May I?"
Inara gave his boots a disapproving look and abandoned her tidying. "Sit on my couch, yes, you may. Feet on my table," she gracefully picked up his legs and swiveled them off the table as she moved past him to sit on the couch, "no, you may not." She gave him a you know better look before addressing his previous comment.
"Atherton did cross my mind but I don't think he'll be bothering us again, since you cut his ego down to size." She added the last part as an amusing aside. She'd seen how Atherton's ego had been taking him on a downward spiral. Ego had a way of blinding a man into thinking himself invulnerable to others and the law. Mal had most likely done him a favor. She almost wished it had been Atherton behind all this. Atherton, they could handle. Niska, on the other hand...
Reminded of the fact she'd been Niska's target, she felt tension returning. Inara leaned forward and started to straighten the few items on her table. "Have you given any thought to what we're going to do about our Niska problem?" she asked casually.
