Mal
It started as tiny distortions at the edges of his vision and boiled into a haze that left the captain unable to focus on anything in front of him. All he could hear was that voice echoing in his head after that smug face he knew was there had silenced. Zhōng wén dà cí diǎn! yíwàng de bā!
Cavanaugh's voice broke through to him, ending that loop from hell. "Mal, I've got a source for a weapons load out back where the Cobblestone Road is docked. Tell me where to find this douche canoe and he'll find out that you have friends he doesn't know about. I'll help arrange that meeting he's so smug about but I can guarantee it won't go down the way he thinks it will."
He took a few deeps breaths and tried to gather his thoughts. "Everyone just... I have no idea where that old... We took out his skyplex a while back, Captain. He's not likely to have moved back in. He could be anywhere." Taking a look around the room Mal made sure everyone was still in one piece. This wasn't news any of them would be likely to take well to. "We all need to tread carefully around places... with people. From here on out." Reynolds looked at Cavanaugh for a moment before continuing. "You are probably the exception, unless you spend too much more time aboard Serenity. I can't be putting you into that kind of situation. There is no mending fences with this guī sūnzi!"

Different from the others Jayne's state of mind went back to normal, after the recording has stopped. There even was shown the usual goofy grin of his in the corner of his mouth. "You better have a second look aroun', Pìyǎn. Then probably realize the chick isn't in ya clutches, hah!" Just as he ended speaking up, Jayne realized the door quietly shut behind someone. And when his eyes on his way back met Mal's, the goofy grin suddenly died down. Did he say something inappropriate? Jayne silenced.

The idea of Niska coming after them, it made him angry and upset. Niska would try and hurt them and most importantly his wife. He remembered his time with Niska and he wasn't looking forward to running into him again. That was one of the scariest moments in his life; but it also brought out his bravery. Oh, soup! and his wife made him soup. Some people didn't know it, but this was a true love. They loved each other, even if they seemed a lot different. It took Wash a long time to break down her walls, but he knew the true woman behind the warrior. He took Zoe's hand, more for himself than anything else. "Mal's right, we all remember what happened the last time." He didn't feel much like cracking jokes, Niska was nothing to joke about. "Alright, how are we going to play this? Where should we head?" He took his pilot seat and fixed his area. "Mal, did you touch my dinosaurs?" okay maybe just a little joke, just to lighten the mood.

Cav
"My recommendation would be heading back to pick up my ship," Cav said. "I've got a contact on the ground who can supply me with a full weapons package." He tapped the monitor. "This seems to be the kind of guy you only go near when you have big guns."
Wash was clearly having his own little internal freak out. Whoever this Niska was, he'd hurt the Serenity crew and that meant he needed to pay. He needed to pay even more for hurting Inara but this just meant he needed to pay that little bit extra.
One thing I've learned. You can't leave a man like that alive in your wake. He'll just keep coming until you're dead or he is and he's got a lot more resources, so you need to take the shot when you get it....

Jayne's comment about Inara being in their hands made the Captain's skin crawl and he was about to snap before he stopped himself. "Jayne... You just tend to Vera. Might be needing her sooner rather then later." He would love nothing more than to let lose the mercenary on that warped codger. The lot chimed in and Mal took a moment to consider their options.
Facing Cav he started laying things out. "I don't know what your plans are Captain but we'll get you back to your ship. From there I'm taking Serenity as far from this rock as I can. Least until I've got something better to go on." Mal turned square on the pilot, "Wash take us down there and do a sweep before setting her pretty. Don't want any more surprises."

"Wash take us down there and do a sweep before setting her pretty. Don't want any more surprises."
"Sure thing, Captain. I'll give her a scan," he pressed a few buttons to check the area out, waiting to see if anything popped up. "Nothing I can see, but who knows what could be out there." Wash was nervous, but he was going to be brave for his crew.

CAVANAUGH
Cav chuckled. "We left there a few hours ago and I doubt anyone thought we would be returning quite so quickly. You don't even need to land if you don't want to. This wouldn't be the first time I've jumped out of a ship."
He mentally kicked himself as soon as he said it. Being on opposite sides hadn't caused any problems with Mal or Zoe yet but that didn't mean bringing up his military service wouldn't stir things up. The fact that he was still wearing the uniform he'd used to tray and buffalo the blue hand agents probably wasn't helping either.

"Jayne... You just tend to Vera. Might be needing her sooner rather then later."
"That sweety's fit for service as always, Capt'n.", Jayne answered with a wagging thumb and a grin, and just as he wanted to take her out of his retainer to show, he had to realize how fit for service she actually was... Mal already didn't pay attention to him anymore, while he was thinking about where to have seen Vera the last time. Might left her on his bed. Jayne even didn't hear the others further talking, as he left the bridge to do what he was told to: tend to Vera. For now he had his order and that was it.

So far Wash didn't see anything on the scan, but he was still getting a feel for the area. "That sweety's fit for service as always, Capt'n." Wash shook his head, he didn't want to know what that brute did to his poor weapon.
"Do you service her by candlelight?" He smiled and leaned back in his chair, but he was already gone.

The Captain let the small talk wash over him, taking just what he needed from it. Things weren't so settled right now that he was willing to relax just yet and contribute. Seemed he wasn't the only one since Jayne had already scooted from the Bridge to see to his business. Mal turned on Cav, "No needin' be jumping from any ships just yet. We'll set you down right where we found you. Meantime somebody take Kaylee down to the Doc. Probably be able to find your friend still down there Captain. Wash when we land come on down to the shuttle with me. I want to make sure those two feds were acting alone."
**Mal exits towards Inara's Shuttle.**

CAV
"I think I can escort the young miss Frye to the med bay," Cavanaugh said. "I'm not sure that Wendy will be ready to go, not unless Simon has figured out how to save her from whatever it is that the Alliance did to her. I appreciate the drop off, though. And please convey my respects to Inara."
It was probably the wrong thing to say. Mal had a volatile relationship with the Companion and Cav reminding Mal of his interest wouldn't go over particularly well. He was disappointed that he'd be leaving the ship without seeing her but the last thing this ship needed was his bad case of unrequited love.
"Shall we go?" he asked, offering Kaylee an arm.

Wash was bored, he had little to no sleep since the whole shuttle. So he set the scanners to scan before resting back in the seat to get a little shut-eye. he set everything on high alert, so if anything got close to the ship or anything was found on the scan, he would be alerted. "Nappy time,"

Wash leaned back in his chair for a bit but sleep wouldn't come. He sighed, "Think after my ordeal I'd be tired enough." Standing up, he started to stretch his legs. "Could use some refreshment." He set an alarm to go off if anything happened before making his way to the kitchen.

The day Niska's men then the Hands of Blue had attacked finishes out, luckily without any further fanfare.
It is now mid day of the following day.

After they had that meeting, Wash had made his way back to the bridge to check on things. He stayed there for a long time before keeping the ship at a steady pace. They had no destination, at least Mal hadn't said anything to where they were going. So, he set the ship to use the least amount of fuel and that was that. He turned in for the night and spent the evening with Zoe, glad he could have this time with her. Wash was surprisingly up before Zoe that morning, he kissed her awake to help her start the day. "It's usually you waking me up," He teased before they both wasted just a little bit of the morning with each other.
Now Wash sat in the pilot seat, leaning back as he watched the nothingness of space and sighed. All he could do was adjust course and wait.

Once they had access to the tablet that had been carried by the Hands of Blue, he and Wendy had taken turns poring over its contents, trying to see if there was anything of value. Simon had continued to monitor her physical condition but knew there was little he could do for her mental state. At least not until they knew what people like she and River had been subjected to. But he had seen something as he scanned the files, a name from what now seemed like a lifetime ago. Back when he was an up-and-coming trauma surgeon on Osiris. Back when that was all he wanted.
"Hi," he greeted Wash as he stepped through the doorway and onto the bridge. He didn't spend much time here -- all were agreed this was the pilot's territory -- but he couldn't really use either shuttle at the moment. "Mind if I look up something on the cortex?" he asked, pointing at the screen on the console across the room.

"Hi," Wash had started to doze off just a little bit, mostly out of boredom. He didn't expect anyone to come up here, no one ever did but Zoe and Mal; sometimes Kaylee when she was replacing bits and pieces. "Mind if I look up something on the cortex?"
"Hi," He wasn't sure what Simon wanted with the cortex but he didn't see a problem with it. "Go ahead, see what you can see." He smirked and pressed a couple buttons to adjust course once more time. "Find anything on that tablet that can shine some light?"

"Find anything on that tablet that can shine some light?"
"Perhaps," he replied, not wanting to get anyone's hopes up. "There was a name in a personnel file. A Doctor Evan Nakamora. He was a visiting fellow in neurology back when I worked at the hospital on Osiris. There were rumors that he'd consulted with the government on top-secret projects," he explained as he searched through screens. "Turns out those rumors were true."

That was a good piece of information to go on, he hoped it panned out for the good doctor.
"Sometimes rumors can be truths, I just hope you get all the answers you're looking for." Wash had never imagined this would be his life but he knew it was right. The alliance hurt so many people and it was about time they were stopped, even if it took time to bring them all down. "If anyone can figure it out it's you, Simon. Your sister is a lucky girl, she had a big brother who cares about her deeply."

Simon gave the pilot a smile in exchange for his kind words, but then his expression slid back into sadness. "Unfortunately, a brother who wasn't there for her when she really needed me," he sighed. Ever since breaking River out of that lab, he'd been trying to make up for lost time, find his own brand of redemption or atonement. "My hope is that in helping Miss Carter, I can find a way to help River."
He was still working his way through faculty and alumni notes, trying to figure out the current whereabouts of his old professor. "Speaking of rumors," Simon began, "Is it true that you spent a month juggling geese?"

"You are there for her now and that is what matters. You can't change the past, no matter how hard you try." Wash didn't normally give out rousing speeches but he felt compelled to put the doctor's mind at ease. "We're here to help you, you're not alone in this."
"Speaking of rumors, Is it true that you spent a month juggling geese?"
"I did indeed, I spent six weeks on a moon where the principal recreation was juggling geese. I gave it a try and found it quite therapeutic."

"I did indeed, I spent six weeks on a moon where the principal recreation was juggling geese. I gave it a try and found it quite therapeutic."
Simon nodded at Wash's assertion that he wasn't alone. Time and again, the crew had come through for one another, even Jayne. Not to mention Kaylee who remained a bright light in the black. "I, uh...I never heard of the therapeutic properties of juggling geese," he replied, "but I'll take your word for it."
He stayed quiet for a moment as he pulled up an article and began to read. "Looks like the last time Nakamora was on Osiris was at a fundraiser for the hospital. Says he came out of retirement at his ranch on Newhall for the occasion. Newhall..." he repeated slowly. "Do we have any friends on Newhall? Or anyone the Captain has yet to antagonize?"

"Yes, it would be nice if we could find someone with whom the Captain has exchanged pleasantries rather than bullets," Simon noted. "Failing that, there may be someone on our companion's client list." He continued to search the screen but could find nothing further. "Assuming that we can even get to Doctor Nakamora, there's no guarantee he'll be willing to share his knowledge with us. We need to know more about who he worked with, why he left...."

"Assuming that we can even get to Doctor Nakamora, there's no guarantee he'll be willing to share his knowledge with us. We need to know more about who he worked with, why he left...."
"Maybe this doctor Nakamora saw the error in his ways? Whatever they were doing do those kids, the horrors, I know I wouldn't be able to sleep." Wash sighed, he hoped that this Nakamora would be willing to help. If not, he was sure Mal, Zoe, and Jayne would convince him- he hoped it didn't come to that. "I'm sure we'll find him, soon as Mal gives the order I'll make my way towards Newhall."

Wendy had been up early to get to work on the tablet with Simon. She'd gotten some long needed rest but in truth, she felt she could sleep a day or two away. Thankfully at least, her headache had reduced to a dull, aching throb. Wendy also noticed that she'd started glitching. That's the term she'd given to the times when she was having trouble filtering and blocking after having gone too long without her medication.
Ever the kind, patient, and observant doctor, Simon had left her to rest while he'd headed up to research a name that had popped up on the tablet. She'd tried to lie down and take a nap, fruitlessly hoping to ease herself back to normal. That had lasted all of 15 minutes. It wasn't possible to get herself back to normal without the meds and on top of it all, her mind would not allow her to rest. It kept running with questions and possibilities over what they'd learned from the tablet.
With the realization that rest would not come until she eased her mind with some answers, Wendy headed up the steps in search of Simon and followed the faint sound of voices coming from the bridge.
"Afternoon," she said with a warm smile toward Wash as she stepped over the threshold. "Find any--" Distracted by the feathery tail end of something disappearing behind the console gave her pause. She knew it was the glitching which could cause things on the minds of those around her to manifest as hallucinations so she quickly recovered and turned back to Simon after only a brief baffled expression had passed over her features. "Find anything on Nakamura?"

"Afternoon. Find any -- Find anything on Nakamura?"
"It appears he's no longer on the faculty at the teaching hospital," Simon replied. "But he was there recently for a fundraiser, then he returned to his ranch on Newhall. Which could be good for us as it's further from the core. Wash and I were just discussing what might have led to his retirement. Nakamura was one of the foremost minds in neurological regeneration. Leaving that to herd cows ... I don't really see it."
He rose from his seat, both to offer Wendy his chair and to assess her condition. "How are you feeling?" he inquired. "Were you able to sleep?"

"Afternoon. Find any -- Find anything on Nakamura?" Wash could see something playing behind her eyes, her paused gave him a bit of concern. He wouldn't worry too much, not unless Simon gave him a reason.
"Hello," Wash smiled and offered her a sweet smile.
"It appears he's no longer on the faculty at the teaching hospital, but he was there recently for a fundraiser, then he returned to his ranch on Newhall. Leaving that to herd cows ... I don't really see it. How are you feeling? were you able to sleep?" Wash had hope that River and Wendy would find some peace.
"Maybe he's studying neurological regeneration on cows?" He blinked, "No? Well, maybe the alliance has something going on out there? Considering he still goes back for visits."

Wendy listened as they discussed, forming her own thoughts when there was a slight veer from the topic.
"How are you feeling?" "Were you able to sleep?"
"No," she said shaking her head as she took the offered seat. "I can't shut my mind off," she added distractedly, her fingers already moving quickly over the screen after a quick study of its version and programming.
The topic veered right back on track.
"Maybe he's studying neurological regeneration on cows?" "No? Well, maybe the alliance has something going on out there? Considering he still goes back for visits."
Wendy spoke up to fill in the blanks for them, fingers and eyes moving quickly over the screen, pages of coding and different programs flashing across the monitor as she worked around them and through them. "Blue Sun keeps their eyes peeled for brilliant doctors. They have the Alliance lure them over with promises of salaries double what any hospital could pay and the potential of their names becoming a part of medical history. I'm sure they would have approached you if there hadn't been a conflict of interest," she said with a quick glance to Simon.
She was haunted again by the memories of What happened in those facilities, what they did to her and others. "Perhaps his conscious got the better of him but once you're in, there's no going back. They own you. You keep up appearances and keep your mouth shut. A quiet retirement while they keep you on call is an extremely lucky way out. It must have taken a lot of time, patience, and careful maneuvering. I wouldn't challenge the guy to a game of chess," she threw in for levity.
A quiet pause before she revealed more of an inside look into the world she'd grown up in. "Some took to it, finding a sick fascination in the work they were doing. Others were scared and tried to hide it. The ones who attempted to argue morals, take a stand, they mysteriously," she lifted a hand to make a magician's poof gesture, "disappeared. Along with the scared ones who'd attempted to flee and go into hiding. 'Moved to some rim planet, to pursue a more charitable line of their work' or 'to another offer on a more desirable core planet'." She said the loosely quoted lines with sarcasm, she and everyone knowing it was complete bullshit.
Serenity's cortex was old and outdated but with a little help from her, she'd made it do things that went beyond a couple models newer. A smile of triumph tugged at her lips as she broke through the last security wall. "And there... we... go," she said with a couple more taps of her fingers.
The monitors overhead pulled up a live feed of a farm, cows scattered here and there lazily feeding on grass. "There," she said, spotting movement amongst them and with a few keystrokes, zoomed in on a figure in a wide-brimmed hat pouring water into a trough. As if on queue, he stood back up and temporarily removed his hat to wipe his brow and stretch the kinks from his back, giving them enough time to see a slightly weather worn version of the image from his personnel profile. "He's home."
She turned in her chair to face the two men. There was a lot to explain about what she'd just done and how she'd been able to do it, let alone how they were able to be watching the very person they were looking for. Wendy figured the fastest and least confusing way would be to let them ask questions.

"There ... He's home."
"How...?" Simon sputtered, looking between Wendy and the image of an older Nakamura on the ship's screens. When he thought of all the planning and research that had gone into the job on Ariel, and how she managed to do all of that with a few swipes of her fingers, it left him speechless. Along with everything she already knew about Blue Sun and its procedures. He suddenly found himself very grateful that she was on their side. Or at the very least, that their interests were currently aligned.
"I think you may be the Captain's new best friend," he noted with a wide smile, certain that Mal would appreciate not going into a situation blind. "This way, we can see how much security being a retired Alliance surgeon gets you."
