Thank goodness Whale had gotten her out of there. He'd have been the only person who knew exactly what was going on and therefore, the only person who could have reasoned with Elle.
"Thanks," she said as she dragged the plate closer and took a bite. She chewed thoughtfully. "Marcus Sadler..." She pushed more eggs onto her fork as she thought over the name. Her fork stopped mid-air as she placed the name. "That scummy lawyer?"

Ruby made a face, still sore about yesterday's interactions with the aforementioned lawyer. "The scummiest," she confirmed, "Be glad you didn't leave with him last night. He makes Leo F. Drummond look like a saint."
Spying a bit of jelly on the countertop, Ruby grabbed a wet cloth and began wiping down the formica. She could talk and clean. Multi-tasking. Granny would be so proud.
Eager to get off the subject of her current arch-nemesis, Ruby remember the new tidbit of information that had kept the diner buzzing all morning. "Well, luckily the town gossip mill has a bigger story today than your wild side." Ruby leaned forward conspiritorily. "Apparently the stranger who took out the welcome sign the other night is Henry Mills' birth mother and it looks like she will be staying in town for a while." Straightening back up, Ruby added with an eye roll, "Can't imagine Madame Mayor is going to be thrilled about it."

Gabriella only let out a sound of disgust before finally taking the first bite of the magical hangover remedy special.
"Well, luckily the town gossip mill has a bigger story today than your wild side."
"Thank God," she muttered before forking in another bite.
"Apparently the stranger who took out the welcome sign the other night is Henry Mills' birth mother and it looks like she will be staying in town for a while."
"Really?" she said, her eyes widened in surprise. Good fortune was definitely smiling down on her. Henry's birth mother arrives just as Elle makes her return. That should keep the townspeople's attention well and occupied if Elle decided to make another appearance and run amok again.
"Can't imagine Madame Mayor is going to be thrilled about it."
"Oh, I'm sure Madame Snooty is baking her famous apple turnovers in celebration," Gabriella said dryly. She didn't see much of anybody, spending a majority of her time at the hospital, but Regina would visit with the John Doe in a coma from time to time and seemed to be moodier with each visit. Tired of being snapped at, Gabriella had started to change up her rounds on Regina's visits, postponing her check-up on Mr. Doe until Regina had left. "It is just me, or lately, does she seem... I don't know... unhappy, I guess?"

Christian
Not really a morning person, Christian usually just scraped together something from his refrigerator before heading downstairs to start his day. He lived in a second floor apartment on the outskirts above the marina, so venturing into town was something he seldom did. But today was different. He just felt like a change so he went for it. Adventurous was the term, right? That's what people would tease him about he was sure, if he had time for them. But he didn't. The daily maintenance and shipments fell to him, but he wasn't complaining. Someone had to do it, even if it meant putting himself on the back burner.
The young man passed the counter and the two ladies chatting on either side. He smiled vaguely but they where engrossed in a conversation so he didn't say anything as he continued on and seated himself in a booth by the window. It was still early he thought but for some reason he had a craving for avocado and he couldn't figure out why... Christian sat patiently while he waited for the waitress. He started counting in his head; the crates one of the captains must have dropped off earlier before he left.

"It is just me, or lately, does she seem... I don't know... unhappy, I guess?"
"Just lately?" Ruby retorted with a cocky raise of one perfectly shaped eyebrow. "I swear, the day she cracks a smile that's not being used as an intimidation tactic..." Her voice trailed off as she noticed the new figure sitting by the window. "Oops, looks like duty calls." She slipped the check onto the counter, "No rush. Just in case you need to head out before I make it back over here." With a grin, she headed across the diner to the new arrival.
"Well, well. Christian Fry. I didn't think anything would ever pry you away from that marina long enough to get you all the way over here." Her voice took on the typical flirtatious tone that so often garnered her a decent tip from the male clientele. "To what do we owe the pleasure?"

"Just lately?" "I swear, the day she cracks a smile that's not being used as an intimidation tactic..."
Gabriella laughed and to her great relief, her head didn't ache in protest.
"Oops, looks like duty calls." "No rush. Just in case you need to head out before I make it back over here."
"Thanks!" she said as Ruby passed her on the way to the new patron.
Gabriella took the last bite of breakfast and without bothering to look at the check, she placed a $20 on top of it. It was a more than generous tip at over 50% but she felt it was well deserved for curing her hangover. Besides, she could well afford to give generously to those who deserved it, what with all the insane amount of overtime and never going out to spend it.
Speaking of work, Gabriella glanced at the clock on the wall. She was due for her volunteer shift at the pet shelter. She gulped the last bit of coffee as she stood and gathered her things.

"Well, well. Christian Fry. I didn't think anything would ever pry you away from that marina long enough to get you all the way over here."
Christian's head shot up at the playful sound of Ruby's voice.
"To what do we owe the pleasure?"
He opened his mouth but no words came out. As a confused expression came across his face he closed it with a snap. After a moment longer his face smoothed as he replied.
"Breakfast please, surprise me." he said.
That ought to complete his spontaneity for the day. Or year... With a sinking of his stomach, Christian suddenly felt very much alone. He didn't like it one bit. It was a new feeling. Brought on by the attention of an attractive young woman? He shook his head. He'd eaten here before but could hardly say he knew her. Is this what happens when you break the routine then? Something just felt very different about the air around him, it was positively... "abuzz" is the best thing he could think of. Then he remembered where he was and smiled up at his cheerful and patient attendant.
"I'm changing things up today, how is everything in your neck of the woods?" Christian asked, trying not to seem too awkward.

Calliope found she had a new skip in her step as she entered Granny's- a quick pit stop before she made her way to work at the bakery. It was amazing how quickly life could take a turn. Just yesterday, she had been unemployed and frankly, feeling more alone than she could ever remember feeling. Now less than 24 hours later, she had a great job that she couldn't wait to get to and a great new friend who would be waiting for her there. Things were certainly looking up! And she knew that she owed all of it to Charlie and her aunts. So thus, the pit stop to pick up an awesome breakfast. It was a small thing but she hoped that it would convey just how grateful she was.
She walked past the counter and slid into a booth by the window. Ruby already seemed to be taking an order at the next booth over and it was always easier to get the waitress' attention when she was nearby. Callie glanced at her watch. Plenty of time before she had to be in, so she just leaned back and gazed out the window. There was something in the air today. It almost felt...alive. Like something important was about to happen. Positively... abuzz. Yes, that word described it. It was going to be a beautiful day.

"Breakfast please, surprise me."
Ruby watched, a bemused smirk on her lips, as Christian very visibly searched for words. He always seemed to be a bit of an odd duck. Cute. But still, an odd duck. Mostly kept to himself. Out of all her years working at the diner, she could only recall seeing him in there once or twice. She briefly wondered what had made today so different.
"I'm changing things up today, how is everything in your neck of the woods?"
"Can't complain... Well, I could. But I won't." Ruby joked, jotting down a breakfast food that never failed to please. "How are things at the docks?" Out of the corner of her eye, she saw Calliope Murphy slide into the next booth. Ruby took a moment to greet her new customer and placed her extra order pad onto the table. After a few misadventures in the kitchen, both women found it much easier to communicate when Callie wrote down her own orders.

Christian
"How are things at the docks?"
He had to think about that for a second. "Lots of things coming in. Can barely keep up. Sometimes I think I sure could use a crew to spread it around a little." A crew... the thought made Christian chuckle. "Better yet, if I had my own ship, could set my own schedule... Must be nice right?" he mused as he noticed another patron seat herself at the table behind his own. "Ah, don't let me tie you up with my rambling." he said to Ruby as his gaze slowly shifted back to the new arrival. She seemed very familiar though he could not figure out how. He could count those he knew in town on one hand. She was, however, a very beautiful young woman and he felt like he could not pull his eyes away from her. He gave her a slight nod and a warm smile.

**Leroy enters to Granny's Diner**
With a grumpy looking face Leroy let the door slam shut behind him. He didn't mind the looks around. Straightaway he head for the bar. At this hour he needed nothing more than a good drink. The day started with such a dreadful morning and was getting more horrible hour by hour. What did this arrogant bloodsucker named Gold thinks who he is? As his rent wouldn't be high enough yet... "Hey sister...", he called for Ruby while taking seat. "I'll take the usual stuff... no wait, gimme a double one." With a quit sigh he was waiting, his eyes uninterested looking around.

Calliope gave Ruby a wave in greeting and busily began to scribble down her order on the pad in front of her. She had decided earlier that morning that, even though she didn't know what her new employers' favorite breakfast foods were, she really couldn't go wrong with pancakes, bacon and sausage. So engrossed in her business, she almost didn't notice it. But as she added the note that the four meals were 'to go', she had the distinct feeling that someone was watching her. Callie raised her eyes from the notepad, half expecting the see Ruby already hovering over her table to get her order. But instead of the vivacious waitress, her eyes met those of a young man sitting in the booth in front of her.
They were green. Not quite an emerald green...more of a stormy, mossy green and Calliope quite found that they took her breath away. Startled to realize that she was staring, she struggled to pull her gaze away from him. But then he nodded at her with a smile so warm that it seemed to take the Maine chill right out of the air and Callie couldn't help but return the nod with a smile of her own.

Sheepishly I tried my best to sneak into Granny's Diner without Ruby noticing, I still felt bad for going quiet on her during our last date. Our last date... I didn't like the sound of that, was too ominous and devoid of any hope what I meant was our previous date, much better. I took a booth near the corner and kept my head down, I had no idea what I was going to say to her, if she even wanted to speak to me, Ruby was completely unpredictable to me but in a good way I believe she called it her flair. The though of that brought a smile to my face and I looked over to her, she was currently talking to someone but she looked so beautiful, her smile paled her surroundings and the promised the shined through her eyes it amazed how no one else seemed to see it in her, or how she couldn't see it god I could sit here waiting forever just to see her smile. That was when it dawned on me, how creepy it must look for me to be sitting here smiling staring at her so with a slight cough and clearing of my throat I slyly buried my head in a menu.

Ruby raised her eyebrows at the two sitting in the booths in front of her. Well, this was an interesting development. Apparently love was in the air in Storybrooke. She quickly excused herself, grabbing the order pad off of Callie's table to put the order in.
"Hey sister...", "I'll take the usual stuff... no wait, gimme a double one."
She heard Leroy's voice over the typical restaurant din and rolled her eyes a bit. Definitely one of their regulars and getting grumpier by the day. "Leroy, it's like seven in the morning. You know we don't start serving that stuff until dinner." She stopped next to his stool. "Now if you want some breakfast, that I can help you with."
Out of the corner of her eye, she caught a glimpsed of Kitt sitting towards the back of dining area. The immediate flurry of mixed emotions annoyed her a little. What was wrong with her? She was supposed to be in control.

"Leroy, it's like seven in the morning. You know we don't start serving that stuff until dinner."
Leroy answered with a grumpy sigh, while let his eyes wandering around to catch the clock over the bar behind Ruby. 'Yah yah, for you it's just seven in the morning, but for me it's the end of an annoying night shift at the hospital...', he replied in thought.
"Now if you want some breakfast, that I can help you with."
Leroy furrowed his brow. "I don't asked the time, did I?", he suddenly answered with the typical gruffly tone in his voice, ignoring her offer to have a breakfast instead. "There're bottles in troops", Leroy pointed his head to the bar. "So what's the problem gimme a drink, sister..?" Unmistakable today Leroy seemed even more grumpier than normally. It really was a suck day/night.

Christian
He had caught her eye, and Christian's heart skipped a beat when she smiled back. It made him think of a journey's end, of returning home to a warm embrace and that shinning smile. The young man snapped back to the moment and he shook his head. Were these his thoughts? With those powerful emotions running through his head his expression must have appeared strange indeed. This was shocking to him, but he couldn't help but feel this day was about to get a whole lot more interesting. He needed to speak to her. He slipped out of his booth and walked to the side of the young woman's table.
"Is this seat taken?" Christian said with his heart in his throat.

Callie opened her mouth to reply. Her face fell as her error hit her like a ton of bricks. For just a moment, she forgot. It felt so natural speaking to him...How could that be when she had never been able to? Instinctively, her hand brushed against her neck as she tried to put the smile back on her face. Not as bright as before but just as genuine. Once again she looked into those green eyes and shook her head in response to his question. No, no one was sitting there. But before he could sit down, she quickly pointed at her throat and shook her head again. Callie had been in this position before and most of the time, it ended with the guy walking away when he discovered they had no way to communicate. It saved time, and her feelings, to reveal it right away before any attachment began. But as she looked at him, she had to admit that though they had barely even met- she didn't even know his name!- that this was a rejection that would hurt.

Christian
As he stood there he saw her smile falter. She brushed her throat and shook her head. Was she sick perhaps? Christian's first impression was that she had lost her voice. Then realized she wasn't sick but he wasn't too far from the mark either. Her eyes met his and she pointed to her throat as she shook her head one more time. Her smile had returned but there was a hint of sadness behind those ocean blue eyes. He knew just what would make her feel better.
"My names Christian." he said as he lowered himself into the booth across from her. He signaled to her in sign, pardoning himself and he hoped he wasn't interrupting her.

"I don't asked the time, did I? There're bottles in troops. So what's the problem gimme a drink, sister..?"
Ruby sighed. She was definitely not in the mood for this today. "Sure I'll give you a drink, Leroy," she firmly crossed her arms over her chest, "In eight hours when we actually start serving liquor. Right now you'll either have to settle for breakfast or order some grapes to start the fermentation process on your own."
The diner was beginning to get busy with patrons stopping in before their nine to five shift, something Ruby was thankful for. It gave her the perfect excuse to avoid that back booth like the plague. Kitt was something that she couldn't deal with right now. This was just a reminder on why she didn't do relationships. Feelings and emotions got in the way. They ruined everything. That's why, even with her resolve to ignore him, she kept finding herself stealing looks in his direction. Forcing herself to give her attention back to the cantankerous hospital orderly sitting at the counter, she shifted into a 'no nonsense' stance. "So, what will it be?"

"My name's Christian."
He signed! Callie's face lit up like a tree on Christmas day. She could barely believe her luck. Like all of a sudden some sort of magic had come over the town, making everything go just how she always wanted. Friends, job and... Christian. Just his name made her get all dreamy.
"Oh no! You're not interrupting at all," she signed back eagerly, "I'm glad to have the company while I wait. It's rare that I meet someone who can understand me." It was like fate brought them here. If she didn't get the job at the bakery, she never would have been at Granny's this early to meet possibly the only man in town who knew sign language. "I'm Calliope but you can call me Callie. It's very nice to meet you, Christian."

"Sure I'll give you a drink, Leroy. In eight hours when we actually start serving liquor. Right now you'll either have to settle for breakfast or order some grapes to start the fermentation process on your own."
'Oh, what a wonderful idea, sister.', Leroy again replied in thoughts. And even in his thoughts there seemed to be a gruffly ton. While Ruby's eyes watched around the other patrons, he gave himself a stretch. The bone popping let him feel awake. It really was a suck night at the hospital. Above all Spence from Room 143 again had bung the toilet... Leroy really hated that job. How often he asked himself if there really isn't something other he's good at... besides knocking down a drink.
"So, what will it be?"
Leroy looked up to Ruby with a depreciative sigh on his lips. "Bring me Pancakes or whatever.", he mumbled with a shrug of his shoulders. From the corner of his eyes he realized Granny herself, giving a disapproval in their direction.

"It's a pleasure to meet you Callie." he was glad he could make her smile. The way her face lit up, it made his heart race. He could feel his face start to warm, he had really put himself out on a limb this time. "Looks like you had a system with Ruby, it's just a shame more people don't know sign." The one thing he didn't feel, like he usually did, was fear. He really felt... comfortable with her. "People should learn other languages or forms of communication... today I'm glad I choose this one."

While peering over the menu I hid behind I noticed Ruby noticing me and her look was not one of promise, I must have really messed her up last night. I bowed my head in shame and sighed while calling myself an idiot, I let my menu fall down no longer using it as a fortress to hide behind and began to think and that is when I came up with my plan, not really plan and more of a noble act of loserishness. I got up and walked over to the side of the diner where a small jukebox was kept usually unacknowledged and over looked by the diners usual crowd. I scrolled through the selection trying to find something that was just right, most just weren't right it had to have the right amount of honesty and cheese other wise with Ruby being Ruby I will more than likely end up with a knee in a place I may need in the future. That was when I found it, yes it was perfect, I put the appropriate amount of coins in the slot provided and pressed the corresponding buttons and waited for the song to play.
The casual intro to the song began to kick in shortly after "Ohhhhh ohhhhhh ohhhhhh ohhhhhhh" I took a deep breath in as my heart pounded along with the kick drum and began to sing allowed with the song.
"Oh, her eyes, her eyes Make the stars look like they're not shinin' Her hair, her hair Falls perfectly without her trying She's so beautiful And I tell her everyday"
I moved towards one of the other waitresses in the diner and began to use the song in a semi pseudo conversation.
"I know, I know When I compliment her she won't believe me And it's so, it's so Sad to think that she don't see what I see"
I then turned to face Ruby and like always she couldn't help but bring a big goofy smile to my face.
"But every time she asks me "Do I look okay? " I say When I see your face There's not a thing that I would change Cause you're amazing Just the way you are And when you smile The whole world stops and stares for awhile Cause girl you're amazing Just the way you are"
A couple of skips later I found myself parked up in a booth next to Callie in what would possibly be a more awkward situation than the entire thing put together. I placed two of my fingers on my lips before pointing at Ruby hoping to get my point across, along with a slight hope she could lip read song lyrics.
"Her lips, her lips I could kiss them all day if she'd let me"
Next I quickly swung into the booth next to Callie's to find Christian a big goofy smile spread across my face as I give him a quick nudge with my elbow.
"Her laugh, her laugh She hates but I think it's so sexy"
In what seemed like a leap of Superman proportions I found myself putting my arm around Leroy's shoulder regardless of his smell and general demeanor and leaned in to him like I was telling him a secret only he was privvy too.
"She's so beautiful And I tell her everyday"
Turning my attention back to Ruby I looked into her eyes hoping to convoy an apology and home truth to her through the gaze.
"Oh you know, you know, you know I'd never ask you to change If perfect's what you're searching for Then just stay the same So don't even bother asking if you look okay You know I'll say"
Placing my foot on a chair I pushed myself upon a table I took my place as if calling out to the heavens.
"When I see your face There's not a thing that I would change Cause you're amazing Just the way you are And when you smile The whole world stops and stares for awhile Cause girl you're amazing Just the way you are"
I jumped down off the table and walked over to a table which housed a vase containing a couple of fake flowers and picked one up before walking towards Ruby.
"When I see your face There's not a thing that I would change Cause you're amazing Just the way you are And when you smile The whole world stops and stares for awhile Cause girl you're amazing Just the way you are"
And I then presented Ruby with the single fake flower and the grandest gesture of love I had ever done.

"Bring me Pancakes or whatever."
"Now that I can do, Leroy." Ruby replied, jotting it down on the order pad. She poured a cup of coffee and set it in front of the gruff man. "On the house. Poor substitute, I know, but at least caffeine takes the edge off a little." As she walked towards the window to place Leroy's order, she faintly registered the sound of the jukebox starting up. A little weird for a weekday morning but she shrugged it off until a very familiar voice began singing along with Bruno Mars. In what was almost a comical slow motion, she turned to face the sound. Kitt. Singing loudly in the middle of the diner. What the hell was he doing?
Then he turned to her and suddenly it made sense. To everyone. Ruby's jaw dropped. Every eye in the place was now on the two of them. She felt frozen to the spot. "Kitt, what are you doing?" she almost hissed out but he had already moved across the diner to Callie and Christian. Oh lord, Leroy?! What was he thinking?! Ruby's face turned bright red as he came back towards her. This was either the most humiliating or most romantic thing that had ever happened to her. The jury was still out.
"Kitt, knock it off!" she whispered loudly as he leaped up onto one of the diner tables. "You're going to break your neck!" Then suddenly he was in front of her again, holding a plastic flower with the sincerest look of apology that she could ever remember seeing. The music ended and silence filled the room. No one seemed to go back to their pre-song activities, more interested in what was about to happen between the Town Harlot and the Town Boy Scout in the middle of the diner. And Ruby did the only thing she could think of. She ran out the front door.
The cool Maine air hit her face as she push her way through the front patio seating, through the gate in the picket fence and around the building into the side alley. Finally fight or flight mode switched off when there were no more prying eyes and she slowed to a stop, leaning against the side of the building.

As if having a strange man jump into the booth with him and Callie wasn't odd enough, the man continued serenading Ruby using the rest of the patrons as props until the poor waitress ran out the front door. He was utterly at a loss for words and just looked startled across at Callie and started to chuckle. "Maybe I should start taking some orders until she comes back? That would sure round out the spectacle. Poor Ruby I hope she's okay." He could imagine how mortified she must have been but he just couldn't keep a straight face.

Ruby took off outside and I felt my stomach drop as it turns out a grand romantic gesture is very easily translated as a noble act of loserishness. I took off after and found her leaning her back against the side of the building, I walked over to join leaning my back against the building as well. Silence. What do you say after something like that? What could you say? "I'm not going to lie, I pictured that all going differently in head." I sunk my head back against the building as I continued to talk and/or apologize. "I didn't mean to embarrass you, I just wanted you to know that I think you are perfect and amazing with a flair like nobody else." I smiled as I moved to lean my shoulder against the building so I could gaze upon her. "Or if you prefer I could always go back inside grab a glass of whiskey and do 'When I Was Your Man.'"

"No, no! No more singing." Ruby quickly replied, an edge of humor to her voice despite her recent mad dash from the diner. "It always seems to end badly for us. In fact, uh, maybe we should ban all music from now on." It was a joke but it lacked the certain light heartedness that she had come to expect when bantering with Kitt. She mimicked his action, turning onto her shoulder so that they were now facing each other. "I'm sorry. I shouldn't have run out like that. It's just...I guess I freaked out a little. And everyone in there was staring at us and...I mean...Kitt. What are we doing? You're like a saint to this town and I'm...well, I think we know what I am."
She pushed off from the wall and walked a few more steps down the alley. Away from him. "When things took a turn for the worse last night, all I could think was that you had finally come to your senses and seen what everyone else sees. And it hurt so much more than anything I've gotten from anyone else here. That scared me. I'm in the business of not getting hurt." It was more honest she had ever been with anyone. Possibly even herself.

"On the house. Poor substitute, I know, but at least caffeine takes the edge off a little."
Leroy watched the cup of coffee Ruby placed in front of him. "Thanks.", he mumbled awkwardly, as she already turned around tending to his breakfast. Leroy sipped at his coffee, when suddenly the sound of a jukebox started up. But as that wouldn't be enough that early in the morning, a man loudly singing along with the song. Leroy spat out a bugged sound, while shaking the head. To crown it all that embarassing performance seemed to be a decleration of love to the barmaid. Leroy took another deep sip of his coffee.
"Kitt, what are you doing?"
Ruby seemed not to be that impressed the guy expect. How understandable, Leroy thought, knocking down the rest of his coffee. Then all of a sudden an arm was putting around his shoulder. But just as he wanted to punch it away, the guy already skipped around to turn his attention back to Ruby. What an idiot... The next things happened very fast. The music stopped, the guy hold a plastic flower up to Ruby and then she suddenly left the diner with an overstrained look on her face. Leroy again was shaking the head, turning around to the counter ahead. What a bummer... Ruby forgot to serve his pancakes because of that crackbrained idiot.

Callie was certain her jaw was on the table. That was quite a display that Kitt had put on- something that would have thrilled her if her certain someone, if she had one, had done it. But obviously not Ruby. Callie's heart went out to the waitress. It wasn't fun getting embarrassed in front of a group of people. She managed to close her mouth as Christian looked at her and they shared a shocked look. Then he started to laugh and it was the most melodious sound that Callie had ever heard.
"Maybe I should start taking some orders until she comes back? That would sure round out the spectacle. Poor Ruby I hope she's okay."
Callie smiled and signed back, "I do too." She looked around awkwardly for a moment, not sure of what to say now. She thought back to what they were talking about before the music had started. Her smile turned shy as she signed, "I'm really glad too. That you chose sign language, I mean."

Christian
"I'm really glad too. That you chose sign language, I mean."
Out of the corner of his eye he saw a face in the window to the kitchen looking rather lost. Christian excused himself for a quick second and walked over to peer inside. "That isn't by any chance for the table against the window is it?" When the cook repeated their order he helped himself to his plate and Callie's order to go. As he passed Leroy he leaned over. "If you got pancakes, I think yours is up next. I saw him making it now friend." He hurried back over and placed Callie's food in front of her and then took his seat. He set his plate aside since he figured she would be leaving. The thought of her departure threatened to overwhelm him so he wanted to make the best of the moment. "You know I don't get out much to town but I'm really enjoying myself," he felt the corner of his mouth raise into a smile again. He was caught in her spell now he thought, there is no turning back. "We'll have to do this more often."
