"Good morning, it smells delightful in here ladies. I'm so glad to see you've opened a business up," but she wasn't really, in fact she was annoyed with it. Time was moving now because of Miss Swan and that meant trouble and her possible happy ending to be over. "I'll take a honey glazed cruller," one of her favorite things since coming to this world. "eh, make it two. What's a few extra calories."

Charlie hummed to herself and smiled each time she heard the little bell of the shop door ring. As she kneaded some dough, she listened to the voices carrying to the back and imagined herself behind the counter, greeting and chatting with customers. Something one of her aunts said pulled her out of her daydream and she stopped humming as she stared up. Madam Mayor? Is that what she'd heard? The mayor was here?
Charlie wiped her hands on her apron as she rushed around the preparation counter and pressed her back to the wall next to the door, listening.
"Good morning, it smells delightful in here ladies. I'm so glad to see you've opened a business up,"
She liked it! Charlie's own little place in the world and the mayor liked it! Charlie beamed, putting her hands to her mouth to stop the squeal of delight that had threatened to jump out, effectively leaving behind a smudge of flour on her cheek.
She continued to beam as she listened from her little hiding spot by the door.

Callie was busily transplanting the new cookie trays into the display case when she felt a hand tug on her arm. The next thing she knew, she was standing right next to Merry and Ivy.
"Isn't that..."
Fae answered before Callie had a chance to sign it out. Callie couldn't help but feel a little uneasy whenever in the presence of Mayor Mills. She didn't know why- she had never had any negative interaction with the woman. In fact, it was a fairly unfounded feeling so Callie did her best to push it away and place a bright smile on her face.
"Good morning, Mayor Mills." she signed quickly, before she even realized that the mayor would likely not understand what she had said. Oh well, A+ for effort anyway.
"Good morning, it smells delightful in here ladies. I'm so glad to see you've opened a business up,"
There was something insincere about the smile that accompanied that statement but Callie brushed it off. Perhaps the mayor was having a bad morning.
"I'll take a honey glazed cruller," "eh, make it two. What's a few extra calories."
Callie hurriedly gathered up the freshest crullers and bundled them into a paper bag, offering it over the counter to the woman with another warm smile. If she was having a bad morning, Callie wanted to help where she could.

Fae had been about to prepare the order when Callie swiftly stepped in, proving herself to be prompt and attentive and the bright smile she bestowed upon the customers on that sweet, open and friendly face of hers more than made up for her inability to speak.
"Thank you Callie, dear," Fae said, smiling warmly at the girl before turning her attention back to the mayor.
"Can we get you anything else, Madam Mayor? Perhaps a coffee or tea?"

Regina smiled at the girl, "I'm sorry but I don't speak sign language, what did she say?" She asked as she started to dig for her car to pay for her treats.
"Can we get you anything else, Madam Mayor? Perhaps a coffee or tea?"
"A tea would be lovely actually, could use something a bit soothing." Since Ms. Swan came to town, Regina found herself with a headache and a rage that slowly built up inside her. Also, she felt as thought all of her hard work was slowly coming to an end.

"It was a greeting. Ah yes," she said as she recalled the exact one. "She wished you a good morning." Fae could tell the Mayor was running on a short fuse. Then again, from the town gossip, that was the usual manner in which she conducted herself.
"Hm, soothing but not sleep inducing. That leaves out chamomile.." she tapped her lips in thought. "I know just the thing," she said with a smile.
Callie had already been self conscious in the presence of the mayor and Fae would rather Callie not be subjected to any other indelicate responses from the mayor. As she headed to the tea supplies, she took a quick pause at Callie. "Callie, dear, would you please get another batch of crullers going in the kitchen?"
Merry and Ivy kept to themselves as they continued organizing and cleaning and straightening up. Fae knew they were sticking to the front in their curiosity over the much revered mayor. Fae went to work preparing the tea, transferring it into a to-go hot cup. "Here you are," she said, walking back to the counter. She took a cinnamon stick from a container and gave the tea a quick stir with it before letting it rest in the tea then pressed a lid into place as she continued to talk. "Cinnamon apple spice tea."

"I'm sorry but I don't speak sign language, what did she say?"
Though she had suspected it would be the case, it still stung whenever she was unable to communicate what she wanted to say. With a silent sigh, Callie looked over at Fae with pleading eyes. Hopefully she would be able to help.
"It was a greeting. Ah yes," "She wished you a good morning."
Callie nodded, her face brightening as Fae correctly translated for her. It was so much more helpful when there was someone who knew signs. Someone like Christian...
Her mind began to wander back to the handsome man at the diner. She wished that they had more time that morning. There was so much she wanted to know about him. 'There is time,' she reminded herself.
"Callie, dear, would you please get another batch of crullers going in the kitchen?"
Fae's voice calling her name caught her attention and she again nodded, grateful to the older woman for getting her out of the slightly awkward situation. She picked up the now empty cookie tray and pushed her way into the back room. Confused when she didn't immediately see Charlie, her eyes searched until she noticed the practically glowing girl almost right next to her. Apparently she had noticed their new customer.
"Can you believe it? The mayor! With such celebrities frequenting your establishment, business will be hopping in no time!" Callie accompanied her sign with a friendly grin. "In fact, she near cleared us out of crullers!"

"The mayor!" Charlie whispered and signed in response, nearly hopping foot to foot in her excitement. She took the tray from Callie as she headed back to the counter. "She likes my crullers! Well," she said, her smile fading, "she bought them but I don't know if she likes them," she corrected. "I hope she does."
Charlie took the oven mits and removed a new batch that had just finished and turned toward the counter, pausing. Her brow creased with worry as she recalled rumors of the Mayor and her temperament. "What if she doesn't like them?"

"She likes my crullers! Well, she bought them but I don't know if she likes them," "I hope she does." "What if she doesn't like them?"
Callie watched Charlie closely, following the movements of her lips to make out what the girl was saying as she went about her work. She frowned slightly as Charlie went from jubilant to worried in 3.5 seconds. Quickly, Callie walked towards the counter and squeezed her friend's oven mitt clad hands before removing her hands to sign back.
"Of course she is going to like them. She is going to love them!" Callie paused, making sure that she still had Charlie's attention before she continued, "If that woman didn't like your crullers, then obviously she had her taste buds surgically removed."
She had no idea if such a thing was possible but that didn't matter. What mattered was getting Charlie to smile before she worried herself into a complex. "And that would be a shame for her, since you have the best crullers in the state of Maine! Now, we better get more out there before word gets around that even grumpy Mayor Mills goes crazy over your pastries and the whole town comes running for them."

Charlie giggled at the image, once again jubilant. She put down the tray and removed her oven mits to reply in sign. "Thank you, Callie. I'm so glad you wandered into my little bakery and became a part of my world."

***Later on, evening***
Charlie stood in the doorway of the bakery's backdoor, appearing as only a dark silhouette as the lights of the bakery shone behind her into the darkness outside. She watched Callie disappear down the dimly lit path along the back of the businesses. "Good luck tomorrow!" she called out quietly after her friend before closing and locking the door. She leaned against it, sighing as she vicariously lived through Callie's plans of a breakfast date. She couldn't wait to hear the details tomorrow. She'd told Callie to take her time and that she could come in later. Because of that, Charlie wanted to get a head start tonight.
Sighing again, she pushed away from the door and headed for the counter.

Ken had waited and waited in the opposing alley, he stalked back and forth back and forth, always watching waiting for her to appear. Tonight he was to hear the screams from the mute girl and he struggled to think of anything that could sound sweeter. The heavenly golden light shined out illuminating his prize as she signed back into the building. Signed back into the building. That was impossible, she was the only one there everyone else had left, there couldn't be anyone else in there, could there, no he knew there couldn't. Kens nose tensed up as his face turned into a scowl, someone was going to pay for this and he knew exactly who it would be.
As Callie stood there signing Ken sneaked around until he could get a good view inside the building and as it turned out he didn't know who would be paying after all. He couldn't quit see her past silhouette but it was one he didn't recognize and he had seen the silhouette of the women in town enough to know them all, this was a curve, this was a surprise, this was a chance for a new game. He now had to brand new women to play with and while this one cost him the screams he desired the mute would keep and now he had a target to inflict his attention on. Callie left and the door closed only to open the door to Kens desires.

Happy. Really and truly happy. It made her want to sing and so she did, her clear, strong, beautifully lilting voice filling the quiet air and echoing in the empty kitchen. It had been a long time since Charlie felt more than just content. For so long, she'd only had her three aunts, all parental figures and well past her own age. She had a friend now. One who was a peer. Someone she could really talk to and confide in without fearing the scowl or judgment parental figures were so quick to give.
She'd also started to make a place for herself as part of the town. Well, a secret part but it was a step in the right direction. This small step of opening a bakery had already led to the meeting of a couple other townfolk. First the kind landlord, Mr. Gold. Oh, and another friend, Ruby. Then there had been the skeevy lawyer, the only negative thing to come out of this new venture.
And then there was Aiden. He was due to give her an update on the rabbit they'd rescued. She found her smile brightening and a dance in her step to accompany her song as the image of him gingerly cradling the injured rabbit flitted through her mind. And then of him with a protective hold on her. Something about a car nearly hitting her as the involvement of that situation but she could only seem to think of that warm, safe haven of his arms. Funny how it took seeing that protective hold on a defenseless animal to make her realize the effect it had had on her.

Ken skulked through the darkness towards the door the identity of the mysterious silhouette salivating on his lips. Reaching the door Ken lightly tried the handle, locked as he figured, next he reached into his pocket and pulled out a couple of little tools which he stuck into the key hole and began to twist and turn them until a sly subtle pop could be heard and the door began to rest ajar. A light push is all it takes to give Ken his entry way, she is singing her voice upbeat and melodic he screams will be beautiful. Ken sneaks around the bakery trailing her catching glimpses of her and her reflection she was new. SHE. WAS NEW. An orgasmic smile stretched across his lips and for a moment he lost his composure and knocked something to the ground with a loud bang leaving him to quickly find a darkened corner to hide in.

Charlie's singing jolted into a startled gasp as a tray of raw cookies on the opposite side of the counter fell to the floor. They had been precariously close to the edge as she'd been running out of counter space with all the goodies prepared and ready for the oven early the next morning. With all her carefree flitting about, she must have bumped into the ones nearest her causing the trays to shift just enough to push that one off balance.
That was the only logical explanation. Still though, she felt a chill go through her and rubbed her arms coming to the sudden realization there actually was a chill in the air. She turned toward the direction of the cold breeze and stared at the door standing ajar, confusion etched on her face.
Hadn't she locked it? She could have sworn she had. Then again, her mind had been preoccupied with a dozen daydreams. She cautiously walked toward the door, peaking out into the darkness. "Hello?" she asked in a quiet, shaky voice but was answered only by another cool breeze. She was being ridiculous. Her aunts put too much fear into her. She simply hadn't pushed the door completely closed which was why the latch had not locked properly into place. She mentally chastised herself as she closed the door, giving it a firm push and making sure she heard the latch click into place before locking it.
With a sigh, she knelt down and righted the tray and began throwing the ruined cookies onto it. Still feeling a little uneasy, she gave a nervous laugh and repeated a line she heard often from her aunts. "Head out of the clouds, girl."

He watched her move around the room her voice trembling as she called out the slight trembling in her wrist as she closed and locked the door again. He had to stifle a laugh as she chastised herself before picking up the cookies he knocked over. Ken quickly walked past her silently his step soft and inaudible the grab of her loose hair swift creating nothing but a breeze as he disappeared to the other side of the store. Where had she been this whole time? Was she off sleeping while he was busy working? Had he been too busy with other projects while she was day dreaming? This woman, this sleeping beauty came from nowhere and flooded him with emotion.
Ken looked around him, jams, sauces, icings, wicked flashed on his face as he stocked up on the dark red ones and made his way towards the door. Quickly he began to scrawl a message on the wall by the door, the baking ingredients began to run and drip down the wall, when he was content with the message Ken took the evidence as his new strands of hair and slipped through the door leaving it unlocked and open once again with the a message towards his new prey reading...
'Wake up Sleeping Beauty, I'll love you today & kill you tomorrow."

A whole tray of cookies, ruined. Nothing to salvage out of this mess. Such a waste. Perhaps if she did heed her aunts' wishes, take her head out of the clouds and ground herself, this wouldn't have happened and she wouldn't have scared the wits out of herself with her carelessness. But it was hard to. So many new things and feelings and all the excitement in the past couple days. It was something akin to sensory overload. Emotional overload? Was that a thing? Again, she found her head in the clouds.
Despite the fact she had worked out the strange occurrences with the fallen cookies and open door, she still felt an unease niggling at the back of her mind that had her questioning her conclusions. As if to validate her doubt, hinges creaked as another cold breeze invaded her kitchen.
Charlie quickly stood and spun toward the door, nearly losing her footing. Instead of the door, she found herself staring at the darkness of the outside until the red writing bleeding down the wall commanded her attention.
She would have screamed if she could breath. A fierce trembling overtook her as she felt a fear like nothing she'd ever experienced in her sheltered life. Unable to tear her eyes away, Charlie slowly walked backward, grabbing blindly for something off the counter, ignoring the sound of more trays crashing to the ground until her hands closed around a spreading knife. She held it tight, backing up until her back hit the wall. She reached behind her for the phone attached there, awkwardly balancing it as she dug in her pocket for the little piece of paper with a phone number, cursing as her shaking finger pushed the wrong button. She managed it the second try and held the phone to her ear as it rang.
"Please pick up, please pick up, please pick up..." she pleaded, her voice a weak tremble.

"...Yeah?"
The sound of his voice, just that one word had relief flooding through her. She let her legs give out and slid to the ground, hugging her knees until she sat in a tight little ball, a vise-like grip on the knife in one hand and the phone in the other. "Aiden!" she cried out in a sob of relief. She spoke rapidly in a shaky, barely coherent voice. "Aiden, someone was here. I thought I was alone, but someone was here. He--he left a message. He's gone now. I--I think he's gone now. What if he isn't gone now?" She found herself staring hard into the darkness with a fresh panic.

Aiden arrived in the alley outside the bakery cutting the engine to his motorcycle and engaging the kickstand he swung his leg over in one swift motion and ran towards the open door stopping just inside the doorway. Charlie sat in a ball hugging her knees, tears streamed down her face and her breathing was haggard and in the instant it pained Aiden to see her like that. Pained him, he still found it weird to actually feel things he was use to be numb to the world but now the beautiful broken creature before him brought colour to his monochrome world. Aiden slid down to his knees nest to her putting his arm around, pulling her in, holding her, protecting her.
"Shhh, It's just me Charlie. There is no one else here I promise."
It was while comforting her that Aiden first saw the message written on the wall for her and he felt a fire burn inside him. It was familiar filled with anger and violence, glee and pleasure, he wanted to find the person who did this and he wanted to hurt them slowly for they had done.
"It'll be ok, I'm here for you, I wont let anything happen. I swear it."

She gave a startled cry when someone emerged out of the darkness but it turned into a sob of relief.
"Shhh, It's just me Charlie. There is no one else here I promise."
Charlie let the knife and phone clatter to the floor as she threw her arms around him. She held on tight and hid her face in the crook of his neck from the horrible bleeding words, tears of relief wracking her.
"It'll be ok, I'm here for you, I wont let anything happen. I swear it."
Charlie held on for a few minutes after her tears subsided and her tremors cease. She felt completely and utterly safe in the warm haven of his arms. Grudgingly, she pulled back, wiping at her eyes with the back of her hand. She'd been a blubbering mess. A slight embarrassment colored her cheeks.
"I'm sorry," she said, averting her gaze from the wall. "I didn't know who else to call."

"I'm sorry, I didn't know who else to call."
Aiden gave her a comforting smile before scooping her up and carrying her away from the door and the message that taunted her. He carried her to a counter near a sink and placed her gently on to the counter before getting a small cloth and dabbing away her tears. Aiden put his hand under her face his index finger resting against her chin his thumb lightly rubbing her chin, just touching her a comfort to him and hoped she felt it in return.
"It's fine Charlie, really I would rather know you are safe."
Aiden carefully dabbed under her eyes wiping away her tears before taking her hand, it still trembled and she felt cold, Charlie was in shock which is no surprise given that she seemed scared for her life. Aiden began to shuffle his long black coat off. "Here" He placed it around Charlies shoulders pulling it in around the buttons to keep her warm.
"Anytime you want me to, I will always be the man to save your day."

Before she could even think to insist she could walk on her own, she found herself swooped off the ground and carried to the counter near the sink. As she quickly wrapped her arms around his neck to hold on, she was glad to not have gotten the opportunity to protest. That along with the way he gently caressed her face made her momentarily forget the terror. Then the connection was lost as he removed his jacket and placed it over her shoulders. She hadn't realized how cold she'd been until she was cocooned in his warmth.
Anytime you want me to, I will always be the man to save your day."
She smiled shyly at him finding it suddenly difficult to look him in the eye. Her eyes fell on the center counter behind him, the trays eschew and two other trays now missing as she'd knocked them down when blindly seeking a weapon. Her smile fade as her eyes stayed glued to the counter while she spoke.
"I'm sure I locked the door when Callie left. It's something my aunts engrained in me. Always make sure you lock the door." She paused. The way her aunts went on about it gave her the impression a locked door guaranteed your safety. How wrong she was. "But he got in somehow." The events played in her mind again. "I heard a tray fall off the opposite side of the counter. I thought I'd somehow caused it but I realize now how unrealist that sounds." It had been him. She pulled the coat closer around her as the realization he'd been there far longer than she'd realized sent another chill through her.
"He was here the whole time and I didn't even know it."

Aiden looked deeply into Charlies eyes he wanted to hurt whoever had done this to her and hurt them badly, slowly and repeatedly. He wanted to hold her to just wrap his arms around her and take all her pain away and give her the brightly innocent world she thought it truly was instead Aiden put his hands on his coat the hung around her ensure it was snug on her. Aiden gave Charlie a small smile of comfort not that he expected it to do much good.
"Hey, it's not your fault you did nothing wrong. I'll give the Sheriff a call so he can find the sick fu-, whoever did this and make sure he will never be able to do it again."

Charlie felt his gaze and it drew her eyes away from the messy counter and back to him. She was momentarily lost, the situation and the world around her forgotten. It took her a second to register what he'd said.
"No!" she said in a quick panic, her hand shooting out to grip his arm to stop him from going for a phone. "No, you can't," she said more calmly. If they involved the Sheriff, her aunts would find out and she'd lose this bakery and all the progress she'd made in gaining this small freedom. Probably the whole town would find out as well. It was hard keeping secrets with the noisy residence of a small town and she feared the result would be to lock her up in the basement. Perhaps a bit exaggerated but she knew her aunts would put in place rules that were even more strict than even she was used to and she'd be lucky to ever leave the four walls of the cabin again. She needed a distraction. Some normalcy to steady her nerves and take the severity out of this situation in order to back up what she was about to say. Charlie pushed off the counter, putting her arms through the jacket and pushing the long sleeves up over her hands.
"I mean, there's no reason to get the Sheriff involved," she corrected, adding a dismissive wave as she knelt down to clean up the mess. "It was only a cruel prank. I'm sure they were expecting the place to be empty and were annoyed to find it wasn't. It can't have been personal," she pointed out. "There are only a few people who even know I exist and there's no way any of them would have done this." She shrugged. "I just need better locks. Maybe an alarm."
Her logic made perfect sense in her mind. There just wasn't any way she could have drawn the attention of someone. The only part she couldn't rationalize was the reference to Sleeping Beauty. Could it have been someone who was familiar with the contents of Henry's book or had it been merely a coincidence? But she kept that information to herself as she promised Henry to take care with the secret. Still though, she could casually ask Henry if there was anyone else who could have come to the same conclusion Henry had made about her place in this supposedly magical world he believed the residence of Storybrooke hailed from.

No cops. Aiden could tell that is what she truly wanted and he found himself unable to disobey even if not calling the sheriff could end up detrimental to her health, though he had his suspicions that Gold would prefer the Sheriff be left out of this. As for it being a prank Aiden had his doubts, if it were a prank the culprit/s would have bolted and fled with panic about someone being there this was calm, collected and methodical. Aiden found his hand balled into a fist at the thought of it all and hoped it would be just a cruel prank even then he still felt a lesson would need to be taught.
"If that is what you wish but I insist on chaufering you to and from work just to be sure and I think..." I need to spend time with you, those last seven words he desperately wanted to say but couldn't find a way to let them past his lips. Aiden took Charlies hands in his "..It would be good for you. "If that is what you wish but I insist on chaufering you to and from work just to be sure and I think..."
Charlie kept her eyes on her task, dropping the ruined cookie dough and pastries onto a tray and listened as he spoke but when he took her hands, she met his gaze.
"..It would be good for you. First thing tomorrow I will work on your locks and alarms, there is nothing more precious that they could protect than you."
She smiled gratefully at him for his offer and felt her cheeks heat with a blush at his last comment. "Thank you," she said. "I'd really appreciate the help with the locks and an alarm." She truly was, especially since she couldn't exactly call someone out. "But, I don't want you to feel obligated to chauffeur me back and forth. If you accompany me because you want to rather than feel obligated to... well, that's different." Her smile faltered with the slightest uncertainty as she searched his face for any hints that she'd overstepped and read too much into what might have simply been a friendly offer to help and the words meant to soothe and calm rather than to flatter or hint at something more.

"But, I don't want you to feel obligated to chauffeur me back and forth. If you accompany me because you want to rather than feel obligated to... well, that's different."
Aiden could think of nothing greater than spending time with her, protecting her, loving her... But Gold! Screw Gold Aiden thought to himself, he had never liked Gold and never wanted to work for him in the first place and was unsure why he still did and under his orders he was spending time with Charlie in order to change her world on behalf of someone else but now Aiden was thinking he should try change himself to fit into her world. Aiden threw caution to the wind and decided next time he saw Gold he was quitting as he had found something better, someone better. Aiden scratched the back of his neck,
"Charlie for you I would bend steel bars into flowers, I would wait at your door for hours, just being with you would never be an obligation. For you I would do the impossible for the mere privilege of chauffeuring you around."
Aiden felt a fool after saying it and realized how over bearing it may come off but it still felt right whatever colour she had splashed into his monochromed world was beginning to rub off on him, and he liked it that way.

The words brought a flutter to her belly and a warmth to her heart. She couldn't help but beam at him, a bright smile that came straight from her heart. It was odd, hearing such a heartfelt declaration after knowing him only a short while and only being in his company a handful of times but strangely, the connection felt as if it went beyond that. Was it the excitement of these new feelings? No, it was something more and again, it made her think of Henry's story.
"I'd very much enjoy your company on my walks," she easily confessed. She loved her walks through the woods and the fact that he'd be there to share them with her made her look forward to them even more.
With the tray of ruined cookies in hand, Charlie stood and dumped them in the trash. "If you don't mind waiting, I need thirty or forty minutes to replace the ruined cookies." The dripping red jam caught the corner of her eye but this time, rather than fear, her new-found belief that it had been a tasteless prank had her glaring at it in annoyance. "And to clean up this mess." One of her good, homemade jams gone to waste. She grabbed some towels and paused after a couple of steps, finding it difficult to get any nearer to the eerily bleeding letters or to stand in the same spot she knew the offender had stood for a long enough time to scrawl it out.

Aiden watched as she grabbed a bunch of towels and moved over to the wall only to stop and freeze in her tracks on her approach. Aiden walked over to the spot where she had planted herself he places his hand on her forearm and lightly traces it down to her hand before sliding underneath it to the towels she was holding.
"Here why don't I take care of this and you do what you have to do to get ready so I can take you home."
Relieving her of the towels and job of cleaning the jammy faux bloody mess Aiden waited a second and checked around making sure Charlie wasn't watching and when he was sure she was preoccupied he snapped a couple off pictures of the message on his phone. Once satisfied Aiden put his phone away and began to clean up the calling card of fear.

Charlie was pulled out of her thoughts when Aiden stepped in front of her, blocking out her view of the wall.
"Thank you," she said breathlessly. Even through the jacket sleeves, she still felt a tingle where his hands had traced down her arm. Finding herself suddenly warm, she shrugged out of his large jacket and neatly hung it on the coat rack.
As she headed for the cold storage, she marveled at the feelings he brought upon her just with a simple touch and his nearness. The temperature seemed to rise. A fluttering in her heart as she felt the pace of it quicken. Butterflies in her belly. Such strange and yet wonderful feelings.
Charlie retrieved the large container of her pre-mixed chocolate chip cookie dough. She'd be two trays short of the amount she usually prepared for baking the next day but it wasn't anything that would raise any suspicions with her aunts or Callie. They probably wouldn't even notice and if they happened to need more than what was left, it was one of the easiest recipes to whip up.
After a wash of her hands and gathering of trays and utensils, she got to work, forcing her entire concentration on her task in order to avoid her eyes wandering to Aiden and the white towels staining a gruesome blood red as he worked to remove the remnants of the message.
