Merry had elbowed Ivy when a small commotion had begun to take place outside the store. They stood behind the counter, watching through the window with only the faint sound of muffled voices. Scarlet entered with a young girl, firmly seating said girl at one of the tables. They eyed the girl, her vibe as fiery as her hair. They exchanged a look mentally passing the same idle thought; another redhead.
Ivy and Merry watched their sister make one last exchange with their previous customer and watched her expectantly as she entered. Fae gave them a dismissive wave, letting them know the matter wasn't urgent and that she had it handled.
Fae gave a nod of thanks. "Let my sisters know what you'd like. It's my treat," Fae said to Scarlet. She knew Scarlet would have one eye on the girl at all times, should the need arise for her assistance, but she doubted that would be necessary. There really was nowhere to run to, no way to get away with anything in such a small town. The girl looked smart enough to know that the consequences of her actions would be far greater if she added attempted fleeing of the scene.
Fae sat with casual grace in a chair across from the girl. "What do you have to say for yourself, young miss?" she asked, folding her hands in her lap. There was not an ounce of condescension or patronizing in the way she'd asked it, only an underlying sternness to her kind voice that warned she was not to be trifled with. Fae watched the girl with curiosity and interest.

"Hmmmm, thought about it and I am gonna have to go with no. You never know someone may try and rob the art gallery it ends up in." Scarlet shook her head, arms crossed over her chest. Scarlet really couldn't talk, she didn't have the best upbringing. She was a troubled youth herself, but the sisters would set her straight... hopefully.
"Let my sisters know what you'd like. It's my treat,"
"Thank you, Fae, let me know if you need anything." She walked over to the counter, "Ivy, Merry, good to see you. I'll have my usual," She took out her wallet and placed some money in the tip jar.

Bass lines and drums clash against each other as a peircing guitar riff put them both in their places come blaring from Eva's headphones which now hung around her neck sending out noise pollution which she defiantly (albeit un asked) to turn down.
Keep looking down on me I am more than you’ll ever be Cut me deep but I won’t bleed Gonna kick kick Kick me when I’m down By all means Put me through hell And I’ll make you see I’ll be your worst enemy Try to kick kick kick me when I’m down Kick me when I’m down
An innocent smile lay on her face as an older lady joined them and the not quite as old lady left presumably to go get some carbs to work off at the gym, just case today was the day the bank got robbed. The way the lady sat was the opposite of Eva's slouched down closedness suggested by the way her arms were crossed over her chest. Even the way she sat down was at odds with the youth, Eva threw herself into the seat where as the old broad floated down onto like a leaf on the breeze. Eva knew this could be a very unpleasant experience for one of them and her track record for today hadn't been the best though as her father would say "Defensive is the best offensive until the bear has your foot in his mouth than it's always offensive."
"What do you have to say for yourself, young miss?" Eva had to scoff a laugh down at being called a young miss.
"Oh I am dreadfully sorry, it will never happen again, it was such a rookie mistake to get caught like that and it can never happen again." Eva said non chalantley the innocent smile of hers never fading away.

"Ivy, Merry, good to see you. I'll have my usual,"
"Good morning, Miss Scarlet," Ivy said.
Merry's attention was half on Fae and the girl and half on Scarlet. "I'll get that right for you," she said as she headed to the display case, her eyes flicking back and forth between what she was doing and at the two at the table.
Ivy leaned forward and spoke quietly for Scarlet's ears only. "I know that expression," she said with a nod toward Fae. Her sister seemed calm and serene but there was a vibe that even she and Merry recognized as one to avoid getting tangled up in. "Do we want to know what happened?" she asked cautiously, knowing whatever it was, it wasn't good news.
"Oh I am dreadfully sorry, it will never happen again, it was such a rookie mistake to get caught like that and it can never happen again."
Fae's expression didn't falter. "Forgive me, but you looked like an intelligent young lady who I assumed would prefer to be treated as such, but if you'd prefer to take the childish route, I'd be more than happy to call the sheriff, who in turn will invite your guardians to our discussion."
She placed her folded hands on the table and sat forward, giving off the clear vibe that though she was kind, she was a worthy opponent who should not be crossed. Her voice turned stern. "Either option will be quick and painless for myself but I've a feeling only one of those options would be for you. Let me also make it perfectly clear," she quickly interjected in case the girl had plans to mouth off again, "that I work with a one-strike rule and you have used yours. Now then," she relaxed back into her kind, yet stern demeanor, "Which option would you prefer?"

Charlie was outside using the lint roller to remove the bunny fur from her clothing. A funny sounding rattling soon followed by the smell of fumes had her pause. It was faint and she couldn't quite place it. A couple minutes later, she faintly heard a voice from the same general direction.
"It isn't nice to destroy property."
It was faint and a couple words sounded mumbled by the time they reached her ears but once her mind pieced it together, she took an in-drawn breath and her hands fisted in anger. Someone had done something to her bakery? It took all her willpower not to angrily stop straight over and confront whoever would do such a thing but the thought of her aunts taking away her bakery running privileges altogether made her remain put.
Charlie waited a good five minutes after all traces of voices had disappeared and carefully walked down the side of her building. The smell of fumes got stronger and the black paint stood out in stark contrast. She felt anger boiling again as she approached but the image that greeted her distracted her from it.
It was actually very good. A woman with her head buried in her arms, her form conveying that she was crying. Whether purposefully or not, even the dripping paint seemed to mimic tears as if she felt pain throughout her whole being. Charlie sniffed, suddenly realizing that she had somehow transitioned from anger to sorrow on behalf of the woman in the portrait. Though it was an act of vandalization to her bakery, she couldn't muster back the anger over it.
Curiosity over the person who had drawn this now drove her. Charlie quickly made her way back inside and pressed her ear to the door between the front and back room, straining to hear.

"Good morning, Miss Scarlet," Scarlet acknowledged Ivy before looking over at Merry and smiled. She was half paying attention but she did glance her way, "I'll get that right for you,"
"Thanks, you know how much I love your sweets. I have to work extra hard to burn off all the calories but worth it."
"I know that expression, Do we want to know what happened?" Scarlet shook her head, she probably didn't want to know but she would find out either way.
"Just a little vandalism, I think Fae will set her straight." She sighed, "If only she put that art piece on paper, instead of your walls."

"Forgive me, but you looked like an intelligent young lady who I assumed would prefer to be treated as such, but if you'd prefer to take the childish route, I'd be more than happy to call the sheriff, who in turn will invite your guardians to our discussion."
Why oh why did they always threaten that, she did hate the thought of her father having to come down though she did her best not to show it. His thick scottish voice echoed through her head however "You're a wee scunner!" something she remembered him saying when she was but a wee lass... and continued to say on a daily basis.
"Good luck on finding her." Eva mumbled under her breath.
"Either option will be quick and painless for myself but I've a feeling only one of those options would be for you. Let me also make it perfectly clear,""that I work with a one-strike rule and you have used yours. Now then,""Which option would you prefer?"
The way the old lady sat, the motions of her hands no matter how small and the language she choose to use made Eva feel like a worm on a big hook. She knew tears would not get her out of this one and was fairly sure she was past the point of pissing someone off just a little but more before stopping. Eva would prefer the option of fighting till her last breath but she sensed that wasn't really what the woman was asking and instead asking what was in her best interest. Eva lost her smile and stared at the woman sitting before her, she was old and frail her brain probably sturggled to remember to take the pills to keep her alive in the morning, there was no way she could one up a youth was there? Eva's gut told her she was looking for excuses anything to avoid submitting. Letting out a loud groan and dramtically throwing her arms on the table and head over them her hair spreading like wild fire.
"Fine, I choose your way." Eva said through gritted teeth slowly lifting her head.

"Thanks, you know how much I love your sweets. I have to work extra hard to burn off all the calories but worth it."
Merry took her attention off Fae and the young girl to peer at Scarlet through the glass of the display case. "Oh, you have nothing to worry about. You look wonderful, my dear," she said with a dismissive wave of the tongs.
"Just a little vandalism, "
"Vandal-" she interjected in an angry whisper as Scarlet pushed on.
I think Fae will set her straight." "If only she put that art piece on paper, instead of your walls."
Merry looked over at her sister quietly battling the girl. Her anger dissipated as it seemed her sister was taking the upper hand.
"Well," she said grudgingly. "At least it wasn't something vulgar." Still though, vandalism was vandalism. "We appreciate you stopping her before it got any further."
"Before what got further?" Ivy asked as she placed the small plate with pastry on the counter.
"I'll explain later," Merry said, knowing Ivy would most likely cause an outburst that might interrupt the progress Fae seemed to be making. "Why don't you check to see how our Angel Cake is coming along," she suggested, Angel Cake being their code name for Charlie when in the company of patrons. "Oh, and we're running low on chocolate chip cookies. We could use another batch or two of those."
Ivy gave her sister a frown but obliged, disappearing into the backroom to check on Charlie and let her know what they needed more of.
Merry pushed the plate toward Scarlet and the splaying of firey-red curls spreading like wildfire over the table as the young girl dropping her head into her arms caught her eye. She saw Fae gesture to her and knew what her sister was asking for. She sighed. "Wait just a moment, Scarlet, dear." She quickly returned with another plate of a variety of cookies and pushed those toward Scarlet as well.
"Fine, I choose your way."
The girl's head dramatically fell into her arms and Fae smiled. Not a smug smile of victory, but a kind one that held reassurance that her cooperating in working through this together meant everything would be alright from here on out.
She gestured to Merry who gave her a nod and proceeded to follow through with her request. After a lifetime of living together, it was easy to communicate without having to use words. After the plate of cookies materialized next to Scarlet, Fae waved Scarlet over to join them.
"Now, dear," Fae began, putting her attention on the young girl again. "Since we will be working together, let's begin with introductions. That is my sister Merry over there," she said, indicating the woman behind the counter, "and my other sister, Ivy, is the one that disappeared into the backroom. I'm not sure if you and Miss Nicholson already know each other," she added in case they didn't. "My name is Fae." Fae gestured to the plate of cookies brought over by Scarlet as an invitation for the girl to help herself and waited for her to make her introduction in kind.

Cookies were placed on the table between her and the old lady, Fae, Ivy, Merry whatever one she was Eva wasn't too concerned with. And what was with all this talk of working together? Did she poison the cookies and expect Eva to eat one then work for the antidote? Was she trying to kill her with kindness? Was it too late to run? Eva looked at the door judging weather or not she could make it, considering if she was too hasting in agreeing to doing it the old broads way. Quickly reconsidering not wanting to test Scarlet who along with her freakish strength was probably freakishly fast like she was an amazon in a past life or something.
Eva lightly shook her head at the cookies before mumbling "They are more my brothers thing." Was she going to have to start making these things? Is that what the insert whatever flower name lady meant? No, a job... Eva recoiled at the thought of having an actual job, wearing a hair net, it seemed to scream out the way to permanence in this hell hole of a town. Eva guessed that Firry or whatever was waiting to hear her name so Eva crossed her arms and shrank back in her seat feeling incredibly vulnerable before mumbling again. "Eva"

"They are more my brothers thing."
Fae shrugged it off as the girl's loss and gestured for Scarlet to help herself if she so chose to.
"Eva"
"Well, Miss Eva, despite your actions, you are nearly an adult and I will treat you as such. You will report here tomorrow morning at 6 a.m. with the proper supplies to clean up your expression of art from my property before we open for business. That should do it."

"Oh, you have nothing to worry about. You look wonderful, my dear," "Thank you, I do my best to keep up my figure. Hard when most of your job requires sitting on your butt." Scarlet smirked and continued on to explain, causing the hushed whisper to escape Merry's lips. "Vandal- Well, at least it wasn't something vulgar. We appreciate you stopping her before it got any further." Scarlet was about to say it was no problem, but Ivy made a reappearance. "Before what got further?" Merry said it was nothing and told Ivy to go check thing in the back, which the older woman didn't seem happy about, but soon Scarlet had her plate in front of her. She was about to leave when Merry stopped her, sliding her a second plate.
"No problem," She quickly realized this was for the girl and smirked, picking up the plate and heading over to the table. Seems things were going well and Fae got the girl where she wanted her.
...I'm not sure if you and Miss Nicholson already know each other,"
"We haven't," Scarlet grabbed a cookie from the plate and smirked, sitting at the table close by with her own. "nice to meet you, Eva."

Eva gave a quick blink and you'd miss it smile. This all sucked, like big time. Why are they being so nice to her? I mean there were threats made but they weren't threat threats, they were the realistic outcomes... Yelling, shouting, insults those were things she could deal with as it all just feed into her ammo but niceness....
"Well, Miss Eva, despite your actions, you are nearly an adult and I will treat you as such. You will report here tomorrow morning at 6 a.m. with the proper supplies to clean up your expression of art from my property before we open for business. That should do it."
Eva's first instinct was to pout over how unfair this was and give excuse after excuse as to why it wouldn't work but she instantly knew it wouldn't wash with either of the women. Instead she balled her hands into fists let, let out a long angsty groan and flopped her head down on the table her hair spreading over it like wild fire.
6 a.m.? She couldn't even make it to school on time... or at all most days... She wasn't even hugely aware there was a 6 a.m. she always assumed it a creature of myth. And what the hell are the proper supplies to clean up 'expressions of art'? She never had a need to get rid of anything she did, art wasn't suppose to be wiped off regardless of how good it was... or whoevers property it technically is.
Slowly Eva raised herself her wild and untamed hair following along, she just figured she had to play ball or gin or shuffleboard or whatever game old fogies played.
Delicately placing one hand over the other and in a polite gentle tone Eva articulated every word. "That sounds perfectly acceptable."

Fae waited patiently as the girl made another un-adult dramatic gesture. Then to counteract it, Eva sat back up and demurely folded her hands whilst speaking in a mature tone. Whether the girl was mocking Fae's own demeanor and posture mattered not to Fae. She decided to take it in as Eva attempting to work peacefully to resolve the issue.
"That sounds perfectly acceptable."
Fae gave Eva a reassuring smile that showed she believed in the girl and trusted she would keep her word. "Alright then. It's settled." Fae stood up, patting Scarlet's shoulder as she passed. "We'll see you tomorrow morning, 6 a.m. You're free to go or your welcome to sit and relax for a bit. I've work to get to, as do you in preparation for tomorrow," she added before disappearing into the backroom.
Merry watched her sister disappear to the backroom, itching to join them to hear it all out but one of them had to remain to man--or woman, as it were-- the front. She knew Ivy would gleefully gossip the whole thing to her later.

Scarlet sat silently as she ate the pastry in front of her. Amused at this younger girls gestures and surprised she so quickly agreed. "Pleasure as always Fae, thank you for the snack." She stood herself and looked down at the girl, "I'll come by and check on you after my morning coffee, making sure you're still in one piece. Behave yourself," She smiled and waved to the sisters before leaving with her last pastry in hand... back to the grind.

Eva watched as the old lady made her way into the back room. She collected her belongings, throwing her headphones back on to catch a female singing about tearing the a boring world down brick by brick. With her backpack slung over one shoulder and her skateboard tucked under the other she made her way out of the small bakery a mischievous grin stretched across her face.

Charlie and Ivy's voices were quiet so as not to draw attention to any patrons who may be in the bakery but it was obvious by the tone of their voices that the two were in some sort of debate.
"What's the matter," Aunt Fae asked.
Charlie spoke up before Aunt Ivy had a chance to.
"I'd like to hire that girl you were talking with."
"What?" Fae said, eyebrows raised in surprise. "You have Callie."
"That's what I said." Ivy gave a stern nod. "The more people who know about you the more dangerous--"
"I don't mean to work back here," Charlie interrupted before having to hear about the dangers of people for the millionth time. "I'd like to see if she'd be interested in painting murals on the storefront. She wouldn't even have to know I exist."
Aunts Fae and Ivy eyed her suspiciously. "You went out there, didn't you," Ivy said disapprovingly. How else would she have known the talent of the girl?
Charlie sighed heavily but avoided raising her eyes heavenward. That might have been pushing it. "Only for a quick moment. It's a small alleyway between buildings, not clearly visible from the main road," she explained. "No one saw me. Will you at least think it over?"
Now it was her Aunts' turn to sigh heavily. Her aunts looked at each other as if silently exchanging thoughts. "Very well," was Aunt Fae's reply while Aunt Ivy mumbled under her breath as she disappeared back to the front.
Charlie smiled. "Thank you," she said as she handed Aunt Fae a newly loaded tray of goodies to take with her to the front.

Charlie shut the back door behind her aunts. She waited a couple seconds before turning back and beaming at Callie.
"Finally! Now, tell me everything!" she said, rushing to the other side of the counter where Callie stood. Charlie placed her elbows on the counter and rested her chin in her hands, waiting for her friend to start signing.
She'd been dying to ask Callie about the date but her aunts seemed to constantly be popping into the back needing this or that and the number of customers seemed to have increased, which meant supplies were going faster than usual and Charlie and Callie were kept busy preparing and baking. Charlie had held onto her patience with the notion that she didn't want to see it signed in bits and pieces but wanted the whole play by play without any details forgotten and she wanted to be able to absorb it all and live vicariously through Callie.

"Finally! Now, tell me everything!"
Callie's eyes lit up as Charlie made her way behind the counter. It felt like years since she'd been able to privately talk to her friend, particularly when she was just bursting to share about the blissful morning she'd spent with Christian. Her hand exploded into a flurry of motion, "Charlie, I'm telling you now- I am going to marry that man. We had the most amazing time." Her excitement melted into a semi-amused grimace, "Well, except for a little run in with this harpy named Vanessa Bennett at the diner. Oh, that reminds me. I owe a few hundred dozens of cookies to one of the waitresses over there."
Her fingers seemed to move a million miles a second as she recounted every moment of the date to Charlie, leading up to the....unusual trinket in Mr. Gold's shop. Charlie retrieved the shell from the safe spot she'd stored it in, placing it upon the countertop so the girls could look at it. "Charlie...you're going to think I'm crazy. There's a part of me that thinks that I might be. But the second I saw this shell I....it was like I wasn't here anymore."

Charlie, I'm telling you now- I am going to marry that man. We had the most amazing time."
Charlie's face split into a huge smile as she gave a couple hop and clap combos, then quickly quieted and returned to her casual lien, a dreamy look on her face as she watched for more of Callie's story.
"Well, except for a little run in with this harpy named Vanessa Bennett at the diner. Oh, that reminds me. I owe a few hundred dozens of cookies to one of the waitresses over there."
Charlie scrunched up her nose with the mention of this Vanessa person, then shook her head. "Tomorrow, we'll make her a fresh batch or two!"
"Charlie...you're going to think I'm crazy. There's a part of me that thinks that I might be. But the second I saw this shell I....it was like I wasn't here anymore."
This sudden shift in topic added with the seriousness of Callie's expression had Charlie sobering. She moved around the counter to stand in front of Callie and carefully transferred the shell that hung from the chain to her own hand, examining it. "It's beautiful," she said, smiling, then furrowing her brow as she released it back into Callie's care. "But, what do you mean though?"

"But, what do you mean though?"
She didn't know what she meant. Like she'd said to Charlie, the whole thing seemed crazy and there were moments that she doubted that it had actually happened at all. She felt a little crazy relaying it to Charlie right now. But it had seemed so real...
Her fingers moved slowly, almost haltingly now. It was obvious she was hesitant to go on. "Christian and Mr. Gold were talking. But when I saw it...it was like someone turned down the volume. Suddenly the world melted away and all that was there was me and this..." She was getting lost in the memory now.
Her eyes caught the object in question and startlingly, it was calling to her. Before the voice could start, she ripped her gaze away and focused on Charlie. "There was this beautiful, sad voice. She was singing and it seemed so familiar but I don't remember ever having heard it before. And then, just as suddenly as it started it was gone. Everything was normal again and Mr. Gold was saying something about mermaids..."
Callie looked away, careful to avoid the shell, her cheeks slightly flushed from embarrassment. "I know it's ridiculous. You must think I'm insane."

Charlie put a hand on Callie's arm to get her attention back. She gave Callie a warm smile. "Not at all," she both said and signed for emphasis.
"Shells have a magical connection to the ocean. You can be in the middle of nowhere, far from any bodies of water but still hear the ocean when you put a shell to your ear. As for mermaids," Charlie smiled, looking dreamy and fanciful, "the ocean is so vast and deep that they're still just discovering things that have lived there for centuries. Who's to say Mermaids aren't among them?" Charlie shrugged. "They also say all legends are based on some grain of truth."
With Charlie having experienced life through stories and dreams, anyone was safe from being thought of as remotely crazy or ridiculous in her eyes. If anything, her outlook encouraged embracing the crazy.
For a moment, her eyes wandered to her bag hanging from the back of the door where the book was safely tucked away, then back to Callie. If Henry was right, if the storybook was some true reality to a false life they were living, her friend must have a connection to the ocean. Time had run away from her today but tomorrow, she would take a break and sneak out to start exploring the book.
Charlie made a dismissive wave with her hand. "We can talk more about that later. First, tell me more about your future husband, the first date, and the moment you just... knew!"

Looking for volunteers who would like to show the same kind and giving spirit by helping with repairs and refurbishment so that he has a home and store to return to when released from hospital.
Costs are covered. Supplies and paints have been purchased. Additional tools and paint supplies would be helpful but it is your dedicated time and work that would be most appreciated.
Work to begin noon Friday and continue at all hours throughout the weekend until completed. Volunteers are welcome to report for whatever times are convenient.
Thank you.

Eva stumbled into the bakery, it was early morning, too early. Her eyes were barely open and the can of energy drink in her hand now empty. Waiting for her was not only paint but also a pastry, a hot chocolate and a note. Eva eyed them suspiciously, she eyed the note but didn't bother paying attention to what it had said probably something about not screwing up the painting. Slowly she picked up the hot chocolate and sniffed the contents. It didn't smell like poison not that she really knew what poison smelt like and it didn't look like there was anything wrong with it that was something she was able to tell, growing up with 3 brothers had really taught her when something was out of place. Taking a little sip caused her eyes to bugle open, it was so good. Eva was pretty sure her left leg went numb as she indulged in this chocolate heaven.
"Oh my god, I want to freeze it over and skate on it then thaw it out and drink it!" Eva couldn't help but declare as she continued to drink the hot chocolate ignoring the burning it was causing her tongue. With the confidence of just how delicious her hot chocolate was she wasn't even going to bother poison testing her pastry. She took her belongings along with the paint and pastry and went outside into the alley. Popping open the top of the paint she sighed, "Boring ol white." Taking off her bag and looking into it she could see the various colours which she could use to make this wall look anything but boring and ordinary. She took out a small sketch book and begun to copy down the image of the painting she previous done. On the opposite page was the image of a teddy bear it was worn and torn in places, stuffing was leaking here and there and it was missing one button of an eye but on the teddy bears back bore giant and perfect angel wings that didn't have a feather out of place. She looked at the image then looked at the soon to be white wall then back to her coloured cans. "Oh god I really want to... but maybe I shouldn't..." With a groan she zipped up her bag closing off the coloured cans of spray paint and leaving her sketch book on top of the bag. Beginning to cover her art work a breeze blew down the alley sending her fiery hair into a frenzy and flipping open her sketch book to the page of the teddy bear.

As usual, Charlie had been a couple hours into working by the time the bakery opened and their first customers started to trickle in. There wasn't much activity around town at such an early hour. It was a small town, after all, not a bustling big city.
She liked that about this place though. It allowed for a more personal contact with customers rather than rushing orders to move long lines of people in and out quickly. Not that she got to have any personal contact, she thought sadly. Though when the little front door bell rang, Charlie would sometimes pause and press her back to the wall next to the kitchen door, listening to the conversations her aunts got to have with the townsfolk.
It was the usual daily routine conversations of exchanging niceties. However, there'd been a woman at one point who had come in asking about posting a flier. Intrigued, Charlie had listened and waited patiently for the woman to leave so that one of her aunts could show her the flier. They did try to appease her as much as possible to make up for the fact that they wouldn't allow her to show herself.
"Oh, that is so kind," she'd said with a soft smile when Merry had stepped into the back to show her the flier. "Be sure to put it right on the door at eye level so nobody misses it." There was a touch of sadness hidden in that smile for the fact that she couldn't participate in what would be an activity of people giving freely of themselves to a fellow townsperson. How could there possibly be someone bad there? But she didn't bother starting an argument she knew she wouldn't win. Best save up for battles she had a chance of winning.
Like the one she'd started to fight the day before. Charlie had won that battle and had even written the note herself to Eva asking if she'd be interested in a job of painting murals on the bakery window. It would be a chance for the girl to express her artistry and for the town to appreciate her talent.
Hopeful that Eva would take up the offer, part of the battle had been talking her aunts into running down to pick up the supplies this morning that Eva would need, just in case Eva would be just excited to start on that immediately as Charlie was to have it portrayed on her bakery. Paints that could be easily applied to and removed from windows and a variety of brushes had been on the list.
Two of her aunts were still out collecting the supplies when Eva had shown up. Ivy, the aunt that had stayed behind, had been in back helping Charlie. She'd glanced through the window and had seen it was Eva. Not wishing to cause the young girl any discomfort, she'd remained in the back and let her have a quiet moment to gather the paints and brushes for the building they'd already had in storage and the breakfast and hot chocolate Charlie had insisted on leaving along with the note.
"Oh my god, I want to freeze it over and skate on it then thaw it out and drink it!"
Charlie covered a giggle over the compliment that was as unique and artistically imaginative as she imagined the girl's artwork to be.
"Did she read the letter? What was her reaction?" she'd asked with giddy anticipation of Ivy, who hadn't let her peek through the window. But Charlie's shoulders sagged when her aunt informed her that Eva had barely given the letter a glance.
Her aunts had returned shortly after with the supplies and Charlie had sent Fae, the most patient and understanding of her aunts, to take it to Eva.

Merry, Ivy, and Fae had reacted with variations of heavy sighs and heavenward glances over Charlie's persistence this morning. Merry and Fae had gone for the requested supplies while Ivy remained to run the front and help Charlie in the back.
Once they'd returned, Charlie had started delegating as if they were preparing for a catering event. Ivy was sent to retrieve the letter. Merry to pour another cup of hot chocolate. Fae was given the instructions for presenting the job offer, paints, and supplies.
Everything set, Fae carried the items outside. She turned the corner where Eva was working and lowered the heavy crate to the ground, careful not to tip over the lidded hot chocolate that sat atop the crate next to the note that was now taped to the crate.
"Good morning," Fae said with an easy smile. She gestured to the crate. "Something for you to consider once you've finished your work here."
With that, Fae left the girl in peace, showing that they had the confidence in her to leave their trust in her hands.

***Mr. Gold enters from his shop***
Some hours of the early morning had already passed, when Mr. Gold was entering the door of the Country Bread, in fact, being that much of a rare visitor that the three ladies even might get the idea he wouldn't be there as a customer but as a rent collector.
"Good morning, dear ladies.", he greeted each one of them with an individual nod, before searching for actually a fourth face to welcome. Mr. Gold smiled with the inner knowledge of nothing had changed since the last time he was paying this store a visit. The young beauty still was locked up from the rest of the world. Some things will never change as it seemed...

Ivy had rushed to Merry as she'd seen Mr. Gold approaching the door. They stopped exchanging whispers when he'd pulled the door open and entered, watching him with aloof suspicion. Fae, on the other hand, gave him a smile and greeted him in return.
"Good morning, Mr. Gold," she said with a cheery smile. "We're current with our rent payment so I think I can happily assume you're here as a patron?" Her grin turned cheeky with her attempt to make light of the behavior of her sisters. It helped, with the sisters at least. They continued doing what they'd been doing. "What can I get for you this fine day?"

Charlie heard the jingle of the door again and as most times, meandered over to the little window to sneak a peek at who was paying her bakery a visit. She listened for a second, recognizing the voice. It was actually familiar but she couldn't quite place it. Carefully, she inched to the window and peaked out of the corner of it.
Oh, it was Mr. Gold, the very first person she'd met! They'd sat and shared tea the morning shortly before grand opening and when she heard her aunts entering the back of the bakery for their first day to work, Mr. Gold had graciously obliged with her request to make a hasty exit before they caught her talking to someone. She hadn't seen him since. Excited recognition bubbled up and she forgot herself for a moment, popping more into the window and waving enthusiastically with a bright smile.
She caught one of her aunts starting to turn and ducked down barely in time, rushing back to the other side of the counter. Charlie hummed quietly while working and looked up with innocent inquiry when Merry poked her head into the back. "Did you need more of something?" Charlie whispered, pointing to the various treys at the ready, acting as if she assumed it was the reason Merry poked her head in.
Merry eyed her slightly less suspiciously then retreated back to the front without a word, leaving Charlie sighing in relief.
