"Good morning, Mr. Gold," He almost had believed none of the three ladies would greet him back until he spoke up for his part again. But well, it wasn't like he wouldn't be used to this reaction whenever he was showing up at someone's door sill. The whiff of a grin appeared in the corner of his lips at that. "We're current with our rent payment so I think I can happily assume you're here as a patron?"
"That's correct.", Mr. Gold confirmed Fae's assumption with a friendly smile, when suddenly his eyes caught something, or more precisely, someone, peeking out of the bakery and even sent him an enthusiastic wave along with a bright smile. Mr. Gold couldn't help but reply the smile. This girl was the naivety incarnate, almost had him come up with compassion. Well, almost.
Although he had tried to be careful enough to not turn the ladies attention to the little window as well, one of them seemed to have noticed. At least Mr. Gold's facial features remained professional enough to make them believe he wouldn't have noticed as for his part.
"What can I get for you this fine day?", eventually one of them addressed him once again.
"Well, I know I haven't pre-ordered, but I wondered if I could place some kind of bulk order. There's an event coming up soon and I'd like to serve with some strengthening. You know, there's nothing worse than starting a busy day with an empty stomach." There was so much worse indeed. "And what would be better for a start than some delicious looking pastries?" Mr. Gold smiled, noticing out of the corner of his eyes one of the ladies heading into the back, while he was pointing around the variety of baked goods in the display.

Eva looked over the note Fae had given her, something to look over she had said. Eva had read it over a few times the writing was neat, beautiful and so incredibly girlie that she had a hard time believing the old lady had written it. She was sure it was a joke, they wanted her to paint murals for the store. Eva looked up at the painting she was in the process of covering... didn't she just do that... without even being asked too. Yet here was a crate of supplies to do it and another hot chocolate... Was this one poisoned? Did they poison the second once they had her confidence in the second? Or was this an antidote to the poisoned first cup now that she was actually doing the job? She slowly picked it up and sipped the chocolate liquid resulting in her getting weak in the knees.
"God I want to marry whoever makes those."
Eva sighed as she guessed the offer was genuine but she still didn't understand but she could always talk to them after she finished cleaning up this mess.

"Well, I know I haven't pre-ordered, but I wondered if I could place some kind of bulk order. There's an event coming up soon and I'd like to serve with some strengthening. You know, there's nothing worse than starting a busy day with an empty stomach." "And what would be better for a start than some delicious looking pastries?"
Fae's smile brightened at the prospect of a large order, especially at the request of Mr. Gold. If it were anyone else, she'd have commented on the kindness of the gesture but something told her that Mr. Gold would not consider kindness a strength nor a compliment if attributed to him.
Ivy and Merry's disposition also improved, though there still remained traces of suspicion. That was simply a part of their distrustful, paranoid nature. Ivy and Merry had already busied themselves with assembling pastry boxes while they kept an ear on Fae and Mr. Gold's exchange.
"We could happily accommodate large orders. If you would like us to put together an assortment, we could have that ready for your right away," she said with a gesture to the display cases. "However, if you're preferring a specific type of pastry or two, there may be a little bit of a wait, depending on the quantity and variety of types you're interested in."

"We could happily accommodate large orders. If you would like us to put together an assortment, we could have that ready for your right away," Mr. Gold wordlessly followed her gesture towards the display cases. "However, if you're preferring a specific type of pastry or two, there may be a little bit of a wait, depending on the quantity and variety of types you're interested in."
Of course he had no preferences regarding the type of pastries, as this was more about a diplomatic stroke than a friendly gesture anyway. Before he gave an answer though, Mr. Gold's eyes slightly wandered over at the window leading into the back of the bakery again, vacant by this time. And then, basically for no real reason, he made a choice.
"Actually, if it's not too much of a hassle, I'd like to have a dozen from each of these.", he finally spoke up again, pointing at especially those types of pastries that were very low on stock. He anyway had still plenty of time until everyone would be there.

Fae followed his gesture to his choices, noting he'd chosen three items they were low on. She privately wondered if he'd purposefully chosen the low ones to challenge them or if he'd chosen them because they appeared to be the most popular and hence, the ones that were nearly gone. When it came to Mr. Gold, he was too smart, too shrewd, and too self serving for anyone to not be smartly on their guard when in his presence and observing each of his moves with careful analysis. It was also important to remain on his good side and maintain a civil working relationship was the best way to go.
"Very good, Mr. Gold," she said, same friendly smile in place. Ivy and Merry had already stepped into the back to inform Charlie of the order and to give her a hand while Fae rang him up and gave him his total. "You're welcome to wait here," she gestured to the tables, "or we could give you a call when your order is ready."

"Very good, Mr. Gold,"
Mr. Gold's lips raised to a friendly smile. Of course, the short pause hasn't slipped his attention, but reactions like that were nothing to have him come up with any concern, in fact, even pleased him just a little more.
"You're welcome to wait here,""or we could give you a call when your order is ready."
And so couldn't he resist adding just a little more uncomfortableness to the situation as well, not for his part that was.
"Thank you, but there's no need for that. I prefer to wait.", Mr. Gold replied with the kindness of a respectable businessman. "As I already closed the doors of my own shop, I've plenty of time anyway." And with these words and a slight nod, he walked over to one of the tables, where he sat down and started to wait like a good customer. It was only now and then when his eyes wandered towards the door leading to the back of the bakery.

The bubbly redhead ran as fast as her legs would carry her, not noticing the strange looks from the other early risers in the town. Her lungs were burning from keeping the pace up all the way from her apartment. It was a long run and she had been in a terrible rush the entire way, though she was over an hour early for her shift. Something incredibly strange and amazing and...well...magical was happening. She didn't know how to explain it but she did know that she had to talk to somebody. Somebody who was just feet away inside the bakery.
She was in such a rush that she didn't see the teenager cleaning up her art on the bakery's wall or her tools for the original masterpiece laying unused in a bag on the ground. That was, she didn't see them until her foot caught in the strap, the pavement growing closer with every passing second. Callie threw her arm out, relieved when she felt her palm catch the side of the building and the rest of her steady behind it. Well, until she realized her palm now matched the white of the building. Her face flushed a fiercer shade of pink.
"Oh my gosh, I am so, so sorry!" But the words were blurted out in haste, as she was quickly breaking back into her run. There was no real damage done anyway. At least, she didn't think there was. She'd make sure later. All that mattered now was that she needed to find Charlie.
She was in luck as that was the very person she saw once she pulled open the back door. Her fingers, white paint and all, began flying a mile a minute. "Charlie! Charlie, you are never going to believe what happened to me this morning.*I* can't believe it!"

Charlie was just taking a fresh batch of chocolate chip croissants out of the oven when the back door opened with decidedly more enthusiasm than was normal. Her wide-eyed attention flew over to the door as Callie was signing a hundred miles an hour.
"Goodness, what is it?" Charlie asked in excited whisper as she quickly placed down the baking sheet and rushed over, her eyes trying to follow Callie's flying fingers. "Believe. Never going to believe. Happened. You don't believe it. My goodness, what happened?" She noticed the white all over Callie's hand, adding, "And also, what happened?" There wasn't worry in Charlie's question. Instead, it held the same amount of enthusiasm as Callie's signing and glow of happiness held.
Charlie heard the hinges of the kitchen door. Just their luck, whenever they were just starting into a juicy topic, one or more of her aunts would walk into the room. Charlie grabbed onto Callie's hands to "silence" her enthusiasm before her aunts saw, cringing slightly as some of the wet, sticky paint transferred to her own hands. Charlie slowly turned, tucking her hands behind her back and gave Ivy and Merry an innocent smile.
They were eying her suspiciously so Charlie launched into business. "Callie just got here. Are we low on something?"
It worked, thankfully. Merry and Ivy switched to business as well. "We just got a three-dozen order," Merry said proudly.
Ivy glanced at the paper she'd written the order onto and specified. "One dozen apple fritters, one dozen chocolate chip croissants, and one dozen of the breakfast croissant sandwiches."
"That's wonderful!," Charlie said with renewed excitement. "When do they need it by?"
"As soon as they're ready. He insists on waiting for them," Ivy answered while Merry muttered something under her breath about Mr. Gold throwing his intimidation around. "How can we help?"
"There's a dozen of the chocolate chip croissants just out of the oven," she gestured with a tip of her head then glanced at one of her timers. "The apple fritters will be ready in twelve minutes and Callie and I can handle the breakfast sandwiches," Charlie reassured.
"Very well." Merry and Ivy nodded their approval and with the tray of fresh chocolate chip croissants, disappeared back to the front to box them up.
Finally on their own again, Charlie grabbed Callie's hand and rushed them to the large sink before the paint could dry and remain as evidence. "Let's hurry and wash up then I'll get everything we'll need out while you tell me the news."

Calliope Murphy was not known for her patience. In fact, most would say that impatience was one of her more prominent traits. So, while she waited for Merry and Ivy to carry out their business, it took every bit of effort to prevent herself from earnestly shifting from one foot to the other in anticipation.
By the time the aunts had left and Charlie was pulling her towards the sink, there was little hope of her containing it any longer. Paint and breakfast sandwiches and even the potential ire of Mr. Gold were the furthest things from her mind.
"Let's hurry and wash up then I'll get everything we'll need out while you tell me the news."
But her paint covered hands were already flying, "Christian kissed me last night. After our date. He walked me home and he kissed me and this morning I woke up and I felt like singing and.... I did." The last two words came from Callie's mouth in addition to her fingers. A pleasurable sensation buzzed through her body all the way to her fingertips and toes. It was a completely giddy feeling and she didn't attempt to stop the bubbly laugh that it elicited. "Charlie. I can talk. I have no idea how or why. It's like...magic."

Charlie had taken on a dreamy look when Callie told her about the kiss. She was skipping far too ahead though. Straight to the end, in fact. The anticipation of hearing it from the beginning was bubbling over but when she was about to interrupt to make the request, Callie had spoken the last two words. It was Charlie who was now voiceless as she stared in wide eyed surprise, the water continuing to run over her now clean, motionless hands.
"Charlie. I can talk. I have no idea how or why. It's like...magic."
A smile began to widen across Charlie's face as the shock began to wore off. "Oh my goodness!" Charlie splashed them both with a bit of water as giddy joy had her hugging Callie. It only added to her happy giggle. "That must have been some kiss," she teased as she grabbed a paper towel and began drying her hands. "Maybe I can help figure it out. But you'll have to start from the very beginning and give me all the details," she said with a mischievous twinkle in her eyes. She definitely wasn't discounting magic. Henry made her believe that was possible. The question was, what had set it in motion?
Charlie began to get everything out and ready to make the breakfast sandwiches as she listened. Again, she made a mental note to find some time to explore the book Henry had lent her but for now, she put her concentration on what Callie had to say and finding any hidden clues within it.

Mr. Gold's eyes had casually wandered over at the new incomer, the red-head who had visited his shop together with Mr. Fry just yesterday. Okay, let's face it: He knew exactly who she was. A knowing smile appeared around his lips, but he was professional enough to hide it well. Out of the corner of his eyes, Mr. Gold had watched the young woman disappearing into the back of the bakery right away.
Just a little while later, still sitting at one of the tables in the customer area and waiting for his order to get accomplished, Mr. Gold suddenly perked his eyebrows up at a sudden giggle coming from the back of the bakery. The slight smirk on his face grew for a moment. He could only guess what the excitement inside there was about, but a change was happening all around the town, that was a fact.

They were both now wet and Callie's face was smushed into the other girl's hair but the red head barely noticed. Charlie's giggling was infectious and Callie was joining in with a melodic laugh of her own. An outsider looking in would have thought they'd lost their minds.
"That must have been some kiss,"
Cheeks now pink, but not unpleasantly so, Callie gushed, "Charlie, you have no idea! It was the most incredible kiss of my life."
"Maybe I can help figure it out. But you'll have to start from the very beginning and give me all the details,"
"That I can definitely do," she responded, walking towards the sink to finally wash her own paint covered hands. She turned on the water and began scrubbing at the dried white flakes on her skin. It felt amazing, being able to both wash her hands and continue a conversation at the same time. "We had dinner at Granny's. Then we took a long, romantic walk on the pier. We sat there a while, just watching the waves and looking at the stars and talking. Really talking, about absolutely everything we could possibly talk about. And then he put his arm around me and looked into my eyes and I thought he was going to kiss me...until a car zoomed up to Louis' and totally broke the mood. So he walked me home and we said goodnight and I was about to go inside when he just pulled me close and kissed me." Callie's eyes fluttered shut at the memory and she was sure that if she'd been sitting she may have let herself swoon a little. "I know that we like just met but...I think that I'm in love with him."

As Callie gave the full story, Charlie grabbed the ham and cheese out of the fridge then a tray of a dozen of the croissants she'd baked that morning and placed them on the counter. Her face had taken on a dreamy look again. This time, she was getting the full, glorious story. She began slicing the croissants in half, placing them open-faced on the counter.
Charlie finished halving the croissants and started for the fridge again but paused at Callie's last statement.
"I know that we like just met but...I think that I'm in love with him."
It was the hint of hesitant incredulity Charlie had heard in it that gave her pause. "It's perfectly possible. Don't you believe in love at first sight?" she asked in her own wide-eyed incredulity at the thought that Callie might not. Charlie's own insight into matters of the heart was borne from books and fairytales and had yet to be tainted by the truth of how things tended to be in the real world.

Eva stared at the white space a pang of sadness in her gut that she had to remove a piece of art from the world. Picking up the supplies and her bag Eva moved out to the main street to work on the front windows. Staring at the windows she let out a long sigh, she had never done anything like this before.
"What the hell am I going to do"
Going over to her bag she picked up her sketch book and flipped through looking for ideas but nothing seemed right or if it did she wasn't willing to share it with the world just yet. She threw the book back down by her back exchanging it for some black paint and with a roll of her eyes she moved close enough to give her thin lines. She worked making two arms both very different from each other one larger and more masculine while the other small and feminine, she begun to differentiate them more with muscle lines, scars and tattoos. She then moved on to their hands taking her time to make sure every finger looked different yet uniform enough to belong as both hands intertwined with each other. Eva finished it up with a tulip beginning to flower at the top of their fingers the bulb hiding their thumbs. Eva stopped and stood back looking at what she had made and slowly nodded impressed with herself smiling under her mask.

Her hands now dry and clean, Callie jumped in to help with the sandwiches. She pulled out a frying pan, figuring that eggs would be next on the list.
"It's perfectly possible. Don't you believe in love at first sight?"
"Of course I do!" The words came out in an earnest rush, Callie's eyes widening. She had almost forgotten who she was talking to. She didn't need to defend her feelings to Charlie, who of course would believe in love at first sight. Though not everyone would be so open to the possibility. "My father would never understand it. Or my sisters. I guess I never expected that it would happen for me."
A twinkle appeared in her eye, "What about you, Charlie? Have you ever experienced love at first sight?"

*** Belinda enters from Will's Itty Bitty Wonderworld ***
With a pleased grin spread across her face, Belinda bustled her way down the sidewalk of shops in the direction of Overlord Real Estate. She had heard that Mr. Lorne was one of the wealthiest yet most difficult men to haggle with, however the cause for Will and his shop fueled a fiery passion within her heart to do the good thing. She was adamant that she could persuade this man for his much needed help, she just needed to find the right words to say. The gears in her head worked away as she thought about what exactly she was going to pitch to Mr. Lorne on a whim, until a beautiful mural in the window of Country Bread caught her eye. Her feet slowed down to a complete stop as she fell in awe with the masterpiece, landing herself right beside a spunky redheaded young lady who was in just as much adoration.
"This is beautiful," Belinda expressed before turning to the girl, "Is this yours?"

Charlie placed all the items on the counter and grabbed two big frying pans of her own, placing them on the stove. She turned on three of the stovetops.
"Of course I do!" "My father would never understand it. Or my sisters. I guess I never expected that it would happen for me."
Now Charlie paused to look at Callie as if she were crazy. "And why not? You're sweet and you're beautiful and your smile lights up a room," she said matter-of-factly while handing a container of eggs to Callie. "I'm only surprised it took so long for The One to come along and sweep you off your feet." Charlie smiled and turned her gaze back to the other two frying pans, sizzling up slices of ham. "My aunts wouldn't understand, either. Any time I'd bring up any matters of the heart, they would always just shake their heads and sit me down for a talk." Charlie shrugged. "So I stopped bringing it up."
A twinkle appeared in her eye, "What about you, Charlie? Have you ever experienced love at first sight?"
Charlie opened her mouth and almost responded with a knee-jerk 'yes', catching herself off guard. The glorious feeling of such an experience disappeared as soon as it had hit her. Where had that come from? Shaking her head clear, she finally said, "No," on a sigh. "Not yet. Because I'm all cooped up at home and in here," she added in slight frustration as she gestured to the room with her spatula.

"This is beautiful,""Is this yours?"
Eva turned to look at the woman and pulled her protective mask down around her neck.
"Oh no, I don't own the store." Eva knew that the woman was referring to her painting. The people around her all being nice and encouraging was awkward, she was used to skateboarding, tagging and doing stupid rebellious stuff not prettying up store fronts and being complimented for it.

"Oh no, I don't own the store."
Belinda pursed her lips into a grin as she chuckled lightly, "From one artist to another, this piece speaks a thousand words," Reaching into her coat pocket, Belinda pulled out the "Help Wanted" sign for Will's folded four times over from her pocket and handed the folded piece to the red headed girl, "We could really use talent like yours. Take a look for yourself, and think about it," Belinda tucked both hands into her coat pocket as she slowly made her way past the girl, turning her head to the side to keep contact with the talented artist, "Maybe I'll see you there." With a wink, Belinda finally turned to continue to make her way down the sidewalk.

Eva took the paper from her before she walked off. Eva looked quizzically at her back as she walked off entirely unsure what just happened.
"Did, did she just flirt with me?" Eva felt her cheeks redden at the thought of it and continued talking to herself "I mean she did wink at me and complimented my work and said I was talented and said she wanted to see me again."
Eva looked down at the help wanted flier in her eyes there was an address on it and everything, "Did she mean for this to be like a date? No she's a gotta be 10 years older than me, not that she looks it I mean she was really attractive and who doesn't like older woman."
Eva gave a hearty infatuated sigh as she continued watching Belinda walk away.

Callie popped in from the back with the freshly made breakfast sandwiches wrapped and neatly boxed up to-go. "Thank you, dear," Fae said to Callie before the girl disappeared back into the kitchen.
While Ivy put the two boxes of cooled pastries into one bag, Fae put the hot breakfast sandwiches into a separate one. Both bags were placed neatly beside each other on the counter where Merry then tucked napkins and small paper plates into each.
"Mr. Gold, your order is ready," Fae said with a polite smile as she moved the bags to the customer end of the counter. "Thank you for your patronage. We hope the volunteers enjoy the food."

Mr. Gold checked his watch another time. True, he was a man used to wait for even centuries - well, in another world that was -, but that didn't mean he was pleased about waiting in general. Since the red-head had disappeared through the door leading to the little back room where Charlie was preparing his order, he could have sworn hearing nothing but chattering.
Then eventually one of them - of course, it was the red-head and not Charlie - popped from the back, his sandwiches to-go in one hand.
"Mr. Gold, your order is ready," The friendly smile came back to Mr. Gold's features once he got addressed by one of the three older ladies. He grabbed the cane next to him and approached the counter with slow steps. "Thank you for your patronage. We hope the volunteers enjoy the food."
"Always a pleasure.", he replied with another smile before receiving the bags with the freshly made sandwiches. Before he turned to head for the door, Mr. Gold sent one last look into the kitchen's direction. Such a shame the young woman behind didn't get to see more than this. Despite the regretful thought his smiling even grew wider for a little moment.
And with a last "Good day, dear ladies." Mr. Gold finally left the bakery, on his way to use a voluntary circumstance to his advantage. It was on time to release a bit of his bad reputation for once - by reason of business of course.

"No," "Not yet. Because I'm all cooped up at home and in here,"
Callie frowned, feeling the frustration in Charlie's voice. But before she could reply, Merry hurried into the back to check on the status of Mr. Gold's order. They worked silently for the next several minutes until the order was completed and safely delivered to the front, by Callie of course. She quickly rushed back into the kitchen, glancing over her shoulder to make sure that neither Merry, Ivy or Fae had followed her through the doors. As double protection, she let her fingers take over.
"Charlie, why do your aunts keep you hidden?" Callie had never asked before, figuring that the aunts must have some good reason. But the more she thought about it and the more she got to know Charlie, the less she understood. She'd wager that prior to the aunts hiring her, they'd never let Charlie have a friend. It was obvious that the constant secrecy hurt Charlie and Callie couldn't think of a single reason good enough for that. "I mean, you're twenty four years old. They can't expect to keep you like this forever."

Callie voiced the two very things that Charlie had questioned and that Charlie had since come to terms with. She looked thoughtful a moment, trying to find the best way to explain the way of her family to an outsider. Based on her secret observations of the town, Charlie knew that she lived a very different life from others and that probably would mean that they wouldn't understand the logic. Charlie herself still struggled with her aunts' logic.
Charlie stopped stirring, placing the bowl on the counter and shared the precaution of potentially being overheard by signing her response. "My aunts were given a reason to distrust all people, even if a person appears to be good and trustworthy. They would keep me protectively hidden forever if they could," Charlie added with a sad smile. "But they know they can't. I was going stir crazy, cooped up in that cabin. My defiance increasingly outweighing their cautions forced them to give in to my wish to run this bakery. But from behind the scenes." Charlie looked around the kitchen of her bakery proudly. "Baby steps," she said, switching to quiet talking and picking up the bowl once again to start stirring. "Making my first real friend who I get to work beside every day was an added bonus." Charlie grinned, giving Callie's shoulder a friendly bump with her shoulder.

Callie wanted to press further, to know more about why the aunts would think that keeping Charlie hidden was the only way to keep her safe. But, for once, the impetuous redhead decided to keep her thoughts to herself. At least for the time being.
"Baby steps," "Making my first real friend who I get to work beside every day was an added bonus."
"Well, I am definitely glad that they loosened up a little," she replied in a low voice, returning the friendly bump with a grin. "Or else we never would have met. And now that they know there are trustworthy people out there, maybe those baby steps will turn into toddler steps." Callie glanced down into the bowl of batter, recognizing the beginnings of a batch of chocolate chip cookies. "I have a possibly amazing...or possibly terrible idea." Callie dashed across the room and pulled open the door to the refrigerator. When she reappeared, a carton of fresh strawberries were clutched in her hand. "Strawberry chocolate chip cookies! What do you think? Up for a little experimenting?"

...And now that they know there are trustworthy people out there, maybe those baby steps will turn into toddler steps."
"I can only hope," Charlie said on a sigh, continuing to stir with a wistful look on her face.
"I have a possibly amazing...or possibly terrible idea."
"Hm?" Charlie said, pulling herself from wistful thoughts to watch with intrigue as Callie dashed to the refrigerator and back.
"Strawberry chocolate chip cookies! What do you think? Up for a little experimenting?"
Charlie looked as if she was thinking it over with a baker's mind, contemplating the flavor then the substitutions or changes that would need to be made to the rest of the ingredients and baking method. A smile slowly formed as it all came together. "We could make that work. Let's do it!" she said excitedly. Charlie placed the bowl on the counter and grabbed a couple things to counterbalance the texture and flavor change the strawberries would make to the batter. She began to giggle at a funny thought, making light of her situation which both she and Callie thought to be silly and overboard. "Look at you, coming in here and putting crazy baking ideas in my head. This must be the bad influence my aunts are so paranoid about."

"Look at you, coming in here and putting crazy baking ideas in my head. This must be the bad influence my aunts are so paranoid about."
Callie laugh- oh how it felt so good to laugh and hear that magical sound come out- and poured the contents of the container into a colander before heading to the sink to rinse them. "Must be," she agreed with a wry grin. "Who knows, maybe someday we'll get really crazy like mixing avocados and chocolate."
Once the strawberries were clean, Callie dumped the lot of them onto the large counter cutting board and began slicing them into fours with a parring knife. Her smile faltered at a sudden unpleasant and sobering thought, "Charlie...how do we tell your aunts about my miraculous recovery? I'm not naive, I know the only reason they let me work here with you is because there was absolutely no way I could ever tell anyone. What happens now?"

"Must be," "Who knows, maybe someday we'll get really crazy like mixing avocados and chocolate."
Charlie wrinkled her nose. “Oh, no, no,” she said on a laugh. “There’s good crazy, then there’s mixing avocado and chocolate crazy.”
They both grinned in companionable silence as Callie concentrated on cutting up the strawberries and Charlie concentrated on using her baking savvy to balance the change the strawberries would make to the batter.
”Charlie...how do we tell your aunts about my miraculous recovery? I'm not naive, I know the only reason they let me work here with you is because there was absolutely no way I could ever tell anyone. What happens now?"
Charlie stopped stirring and placed the bowl onto the counter. “It’ll be okay, she said, placing a reassuring hand on Callie’s arm. My aunts have gotten to know you. They really like you and they trust you.” She thought over their decision: tell them or don’t? It didn’t take long to make up her mind. “It’s better we tell them. At some point, it’s likely they’ll find out and knowing we kept it from them, that will plant a seed of distrust.” Charlie picked the bowl back up and continued to stir. “We’ll tell them tonight as they’re leaving. They’ll have the whole evening to process the news and I’m sure by tomorrow morning, it won’t even be a thing anymore. How does that sound?”
After the strawberries were sliced and stirred into the mix, they started scooping up spoonful sized chunks and rolling them into spheres, placing them once by one on two cookie sheets. Charlie was in quiet thought as she scooped and rolled, thinking over Callie's miraculous voice recovery. It was unexplainable, at least as far as she knew. It didn't make sense and seemed so far from being logically explained. But maybe it had nothing to do with real world explanation. Maybe Callie was onto something when she said it was like magic. Maybe it wasn't like magic. Maybe it was magic.
Charlie's eyes went to her satchel hanging on the back of the door that held the book that she still hadn't had a chance to look over. Things always seemed to come up, interrupting her plans to sneak away and delve into Henry's theory; one that she really loved the idea of and really wanted to believe in. With Callie's newly found voice revelation, Charlie was more eager than ever to embrace Henry's fantasy of fairytales and magic.
They placed the cookie sheets into the oven and Charlie set a timer. "I'm famished and could use a break outside of these four walls." Charlie gestured to the kitchen she'd been cooped up in since dawn. "I'm going to take an early lunch break, if you don't mind." She began moving around the kitchen, quickly putting together a sandwich for herself as she gave instructions. "The cookies may need around five minutes more after the timer goes off. Check to see how the strawberries are fairing in the heat. It may be better to let them sit and continue to slow bake on the hot pan outside of the oven for those last five minutes."
She grabbed a small wicker basket and placed the wrapped sandwich inside along with a small handful of grapes and the few strawberries in the little container that hadn't been used for the cookies. "Some food and fresh air will allow me to think over the miraculous recovery of your voice," Charlie said with a smile, adding a few treats she always had on hand for the animals. She didn't mention that part of the thinking process included looking through the book. Despite trusting Callie, she wasn't sure if her friend would readily embrace Henry's theory but if Charlie could present proof when delivering the fantastical thought, she may win Callie over.
Charlie scribbled a quick 'Went to lunch' on a piece of paper along with a heart beside her name for Callie to give to her aunts in case they asked where she was since she was heading out a bit earlier than usual. Basket handles resting on one arm, she pulled her satchel over her other shoulder and opened the door. "I shouldn't be more than an hour," she promised.

"I shouldn't be more than an hour,"
"Aye aye, Captain! I'll hold down the ship while you're ashore." Callie replied with a playful salute. Once Charlie had left, an unusual stillness fell over the room. Callie stood there for a moment, soaking in the quiet. It wasn't a new sensation for the girl who had lived most of her life in silence though at the current moment, she wished for a little less time to stew over her thoughts. How she hoped that Charlie was right about the aunts.
Quickly, with that last thought, Callie jumped back into work.

*Ruby enters from Main Street*
She sped towards the new bakery, taking care to cross the street as she passed the toy shop. Sure enough, the flash of red hair was her favorite hooligan. She made a mental note to find out what trouble the kid had gotten into now. But time was now of the essence.
"Okay- no questions asked. I need you to take this over to Wonderworld. Tell Gabrielle it's from Granny. If it gets there safely, I will split my tips with you for an entire month." Ruby set down the carafe without waiting for an answer. It would likely be smart assed anyway. She turned to start back up the street but a familiar rogue racing down towards her stopped her in her tracks. Did Gail send Errol after her? Ruby quickly changed directions, heading into the woods behind the building.
