The home of Charlotte and her aunts hidden in the woods

Charlotte had been up just before the sunrise. She'd tried to sleep more but the excitement of the bakery, her bakery, officially opening later today had her wide awake. After over two decades of the same routine and observing people living a normal town life from a safe distance, she was excited to finally break free from the routine and be a part a town. Well, kind of. Part of the agreement made with her aunts was that she would remain out of sight, arriving before the town started to stir, leaving when it was dark, and staying in the back during business hours.
It wasn't entirely like normal town living but it was a step closer. She could understand her aunts' over-protective natures when she was younger but now that she was an adult herself, she had begun questioning it more and more. When she pushed for their reasoning for her to remain tucked away, she never received a clear answer. It was always a generic It's not safe. People can't be trusted. They'll use you. They'll hurt you. They'll deceive you. Never any reasoning and never any details. She'd always assumed there was something that had happened in their past but as the years passed by, she was beginning to wonder if this paranoia was another extension of their eccentricities. She knew in her heart that they meant well.
Charlotte wrote her aunts a quick note before heading out to the bakery.

The clock, which has been stuck at 8:15 for as long as anyone can remember, began to move once again promptly at 8:15 p.m.
Several hours pass. It is now the morning after the clock has started.
A few may have noticed the clock moving last night and those close enough may have realized when it chimed the 9 p.m. hour. Others may have learned by word of mouth or not until they next arrived in town.

Aiden leaned against a tree as the sun rose behind me, he wore the same clothes as he had been wearing when we rushed to Charlies aid as he had yet to go back to his place instead standing watch over her, making sure no harm came to her while she slept. As the sun broke free into the sky Aiden bent over picking up a few pebbles, Charlie had told him and reminded him how important it was that her Aunts not see him and he was perfectly content with fulfilling her wishes but he had to see her, he missed her smile and the shine in her eyes. Aiden threw the small pebble at her window, then another followed by another hoping to get her attention, as he ran out of pebbles he regained his composure of leaning against a tree, a golden silhouette in a watching over a cabin in the woods.

Charlie had been up earlier than usual, unable to sleep in her excitement over seeing Aiden again. Even while dreaming, she'd had Aiden on her mind. The combination of the dreams and Henry's claim that he believed her to be Aurora had her quietly humming Once Upon a Dream as she sat in front of her mirror finishing the last part of her morning routine, brushing her golden hair. What a wonderful thought, the thought of being part of a world of fairy tales as Henry believed them all to be. After all, didn't fairy tales always had happy endings?
Her musings were interrupted with three taps at her window. 'I forgot to fill the bird feeder,' she thought, assuming it was one of her rescued birds that made it's home by her cabin. Pierre, the little blue jay she'd nursed back to health last summer, had taken it upon himself to remind her with taps on her window when the feeder was empty. He was definitely a bold one which she attributed as one of the main reasons she'd found him injured.
Charlie pushed open the window. "I'll be right there, Pierre," she called out softly as she looked up at the feeder. It was still a third full. Charlie observed in confusion as Pierre and a couple other birds distractedly pecked at the seeds, their attention divided between the food and the woods. Her eyes followed theirs to the woods.
There he stood, leaning comfortably against a tree as if he could patiently stand there for hours. A smile spread across her face and she sighed as her heartbeat quickened. She felt she, too, could stand here for hours watching him right back. With a quick glance over her shoulder and a brief listen, all was still and quiet. Her aunts were fast asleep. She decided to take a page out of Pierre's book and be bold. Charlie waved Aiden over.

She opened the window and after a moment waved him over, Aiden forced himself to walk slowly over to her though in reality he could feel all the muscles in his legs fighting his wishes demanding to run to her. A long shadow cast down the divide to her the morning sun still rising behind him. As he approached her window his heart began to beat faster and he could hear a choir of angels singing 'there she is' as he gazed upon her Aiden beamed a smile on the inside his stern features refusing to budge out of habit. Framed in window and sunlight she looked more beautiful than a personification of spring ever could, even his shadow refused to spoil her picturesque appearance. Aiden leaned against the side of the building as he had against the tree not wanting to spoil the canvas contained between the frames of the window.
"And on that cheek, and o'er that brow, So soft, so calm, yet eloquent, The smiles that win, the tints that glow, But tell of days in goodness spent, A mind at peace with all below, A heart whose love is innocent!"

He came to rest to her right, leaning against the house. Charlie leaned on her windowsill, resting her chin in the palm of her hand and gazed at him as the beautiful poem, one of her favorites, filled her heart. When he finished, she couldn't stop herself from leaning out and kissing him as tenderly as he'd said those words. She smiled as she pulled back. "Good morning to you, too, my Lord Byron."

"Good morning to you, too, my Lord Byron."
"I wasn't aware you were familiar with Byron, beautiful and well read."
Aiden folded his arms and just looked at Charlie "Even the most beautiful poetry in the world would fail to describe just how I view you." Aiden genuinely smiled again, his face altered to accommodate the new movement.
"I spent all night watching over you, not a peep from anything so you may just be onto something with last night being a highly stupid prank. I still insist on walking you to and from the bakery though, if you will have me that is."

"I wasn't aware you were familiar with Byron, beautiful and well read."
She smiled shyly at the compliment. "Books were my only companion," she explained.
"Even the most beautiful poetry in the world would fail to describe just how I view you."
He was handsome with his usual intensely stern and serious visage but when he gave her one of his rare smiles, he was even more striking. She felt a flutter in her stomach and just barely stopped herself from letting out a dramatic sigh.
"I spent all night watching over you, not a peep from anything so you may just be onto something with last night being a highly stupid prank. I still insist on walking you to and from the bakery though, if you will have me that is."
Her brows furrowed in concern as only the first part of what he'd said registered. "You were up all night?" She felt guilty for overreacting last night and putting him in that position and her features showed it. "I'm so sorry." And yet, a part of her wasn't. If she hadn't overreacted, the events since wouldn't have occurred. She wouldn't change last night for the world, scary jam writing and all.

"You were up all night?""I'm so sorry."
Aiden placed his hand under Charlie's chin, the side of his index finger resting against her soft and smooth skin gently lifting her up, his thumb lightly caressing her cheek.
"Don't be, there are worse ways to spend the night than watching over something as precious as you."
While he was with Charlie Aidan felt free from all outside influence, he felt good about the world around him and she made him want to be a better person. If it was true that one could only serve one master then Gold was out and his love for Charlie was in.
"Have I ever told you how beautiful you look in the morning light?"

Charlie felt her cheeks warm with a blush as she smiled shyly at his compliment.
Just then, a knocked sounded at her door. Charlotte?
Eyes wide in fear, she quickly grasped Aiden's hands and nudged him to the side of the house away from the window. "Hide, hide!" she whispered fiercely as if about to be caught in the middle of a some unforgivable crime.

Concerned that Charlotte was feeling unwell as she hadn't left yet, Fae knocked on her door.
"Charlotte?" she called out gently. She thought she heard a slight commotion and the sound of Charlotte speaking in whispers. Pressing her ear to the door, she said, "Charlotte, is everything okay? Are you... talking to someone?" she asked in slight confusion.

"Charlotte, is everything okay? Are you... talking to someone?"
Oh no! Charlie grasped for an answer. "Pierre!" she shouted as the lie came to her. She flinched at her own shout, wondering if she'd awoken the entire household. She was horrible at this lying thing. She cleared her throat and spoke more softly. "Pierre has paid me a visit. I was talking to Pierre. As I was feeding... Pierre." 'Say Pierre one more time,' she chastised to herself with a roll of her eyes. Simply horrible at this lying thing and she was probably worse than she realized. "I'm on my way out."
She held her breath in hopes her aunt wouldn't sound the alarm and come crashing into her room or running outside with rifles to shoot whoever dared speak to her on the spot.
"Alright, love. We'll see you at the bakery."
With a sigh of relief, Charlie leaned out the window and whispered, "I'll meet you in the forest," to Aiden before making haste for her door.
Grabbing her satchel and throwing it over her shoulder, the opened her door, startled to see her aunt still standing there, eying her suspiciously.
"Auntie Fae, you startled me," Charlie said with an easy smile. She gave her a quick kiss on the cheek. "I'll see you at the bakery," she called over her shoulder as she scrambled around, tossing a few items into her satchel.
