Hike to Higher Ground Boone, Charlie, Kate, Sawyer, Sayid, and Shannon hike to higher ground to attempt to get a signal on the transceiver. Journey goes from box G3 through F4 below:Each box is 3 miles by 3 miles. It takes an hour to walk 3 miles. But also keep in mind that hiking (like that really steep hill to get to higher ground) will take a heck of a lot longer and that if you're running (like from some jungle thing), that you'll get somewhere faster.

CHARLIE
"You couldn't tell from that, but she's actually really nice," he said as he kept pace with Shannon.

JAMES 'SAWYER' FORD
***Sawyer enters***
Sawyer broke through the treeline, making a minor show of walking up to the motley collection. He wanted to make sure he was involved with the transceiver. He wanted to be certain that the Iraqi wouldn't intentionally sabotage the damn mission, something that nobody else had been savvy enough to guess at. "Well, look who we got," he said, glancing at each of them in turn. He smirked at Sayid. "Sinbad..." He glanced Shannon up and down. "Kelly Bundy..." He winked at Kate. "Freckles, and..." He looked at Boone and Charlie. "...miscellaneous. So where we goin'? Oz?"

KATE
Oh great, the guy who was throwing punches with Sayid earlier. Please don't tell me he came along just to cause trouble. She didn't know if he was intentionally being insulting with some of the nicknames he'd just doled out or if he just had a bad sense of humor. Maybe if she tried to put on a smile and be welcoming, they could avoid any further problems... at least for the time being.
"You decided to join us."

KATE
Kate's smile faded as she paused, breaking pace with him. She frowned at his back and continued. They traveled quietly for awhile, Kate lost in her own thoughts. She quickened her steps to catch up with Sayid at the lead. "So when do we know we've gotten to a good point?"
SAYID
"The higher, the better," he said. "We also need a good sized open space so that nothing can block the signal."

SHANNON
As they trudged along, she decided to try to converse with Charlie. "You're the second British guy I've met from the plane," she remarked. "Why were you in Australia?"
"Meeting up with my brother," he answered. "We're getting the band back together."
She gave him a blank look. The guy really didn't look like a rock star. "Band?"
"DriveShaft. You know...'You All Everybody'..."
She shook her head in nonrecognition. "I've been out of the country for a while. Were you guys big in Australia?"
"We were big everywhere. What is the matter with you Yanks?"

Sawyer rolled his eyes so hard they almost dropped out of his skull. "You were big in your own head, Kingsley," he said without turning to look at Charlie. Instead, he looked at Shannon. "That song was on the radio for three months and then it faded out. One hit wonder, blondie."

"Oh, yeah? When was the last time you had a single in the Billboard Top 20?" Charlie taunted. "Made the pages of 'Entertainment Weekly? Had your song played in the background of a primetime network series?"
"I've watched those 'One Hit Wonder' shows," Shannon said. "One song can make you enough for a huge house, nice car, private jet."
"Till you blow all the money on booze and drugs," Boone added. "And I should warn you Shannon's not a cheap date."
She glared at him but kept walking, doing her best not to rise to the bait.

"Oh, yeah? When was the last time you had a single in the Billboard Top 20? Made the pages of 'Entertainment Weekly? Had your song played in the background of a primetime network series?"
"Barbra Streisand had all that. Don't make her impressive," said Sawyer. "Just makes her a nose with an album."
"And I should warn you Shannon's not a cheap date."
Sawyer smirked to himself. "Got first-hand experience there, Richie?" So far, he hadn't been able to tell if the pair of them were brother and sister or lovers...which was more than a little creepy.

"That's the thing about cockroaches. They never really go away." Charlie retorted.
SAYID
Sayid glanced around at the clearing they'd just entered. Still too many things that would interfere and it wasn't worth the risk of using precious battery life.

"That why you're still around, McCartney?" snapped Sawyer, and took a few strides forward. He looked at Sayid. "Okay! Wide open space! You should check the radio, see if we're good."

SAYID
Rather than answering in the same tone as Sawyer, Sayid intention replied calmly as it was obvious Sawyer was riled up. Sayid was still upset with himself for losing control of his temper earlier. "We're not going to have any reception here."

"Just try it," Sawyer growled back.
"I don't want to waste the batteries." Sayid said, holding on to his patience.
"I'm not asking you to keep it on all day."
"We're still blocked by the mountain."
"Just check the damn radio!" Sawyer shouted.
Feeling his patience wearing thin, Sayid said, "If I just check.. we might not have any juice left when we get to..."
Everyone turns toward the sounds of growling and movement through the tall grass.
"My god," said Shannon as she stared in wide-eyed fear as the grass was disturbed by something coming toward them.
"What the hell's that?" said Boone.
"Something's coming," Kate said quietly, feeling herself automatically readying herself to run.
"It's coming towards us, I think," Charlie added.
"Come on, let's move," Kate said, turning and running, hearing the others running behind her.
"I shouldn't have come," Shannon shouted before screaming.
"Go! Go!" Sayid shouted.
Kate turned to make sure everyone was there as she remembered back to finding herself alone after fleeing yesterday. Someone was missing. "Sawyer!" she shouted.
Sayid grabbed Kate's arm as she paused. "Let him go!"
Kate hesitated, almost ready to turn back around when she saw Sawyer standing his ground and the glint of something metal in his hands.

JAMES 'SAWYER' FORD
Sawyer stood, rooted to the ground. Running away didn't even seem like a viable option. He reached back and lifted the gun as something enormous and white ploughed through the jungle towards them. He heard Freckles scream his name, but he didn't feel like smiling. Sawyer fired several times, and then the blur was off the ground and hurtling toward him.
Well, this is it, James. Could say it's been nice being ya, but that would be a damn lie.
The moving cloud fell to the ground in front of him, the ground around shaking just a little. The creature was still breathing, barely. And then he saw what it was.

The sound of gunshots brought their running to an abrupt stop, and eventually they returned to see Sawyer holding a gun over a large, furry lump in the tall grass.
"That's..." Shannon stammered, "that's a big bear."
Boone added, "You think that's what killed the pilot?"
"No," Charlie replied. "No, that's a tiny, teeny version compared to that."

KATE
Kate looked away from the bear just long enough to give Charlie a disapproving look for blabbing about what they'd all agreed to keep to themselves. "Guys, this isn't just a... bear. That's a polar bear."
"That can't be a polar bear," Boone said, not sounding too convinced of his own statement.
"It's a polar bear," Kate and Sayid said simultaneously in the same matter-of-fact tone.

"Yeah, but...polar bears don't usually live in the jungle," Shannon proclaimed.
Charlie pointed a finger at her in approval. "Spot on."
"No, polar bears don't live near this far south," Sayid confirmed as they all continued to stare at the former polar bear.
Boone remarked, "This one does."

Sawyer spoke slowly, as if speaking to a child. "I saw a guy lying there with an ankle holster," he said before speeding back up. "So I took the gun. I thought it might come in handy. Guess what?" He gave a big smile. "I just shot a bear!"
