"Ooooooooh now you've gone and done it Squidbilly, you best make sure that she doesn't get hold of any frying pans..."
And more of the fish insults. Rapunzel was beginning to wonderful if Eugene wasn't doing this to purposefully see how many shades of green the opposing captain could turn.
Suddenly, Eugene paused like he was thinking hard about something. Something important. Like something she hadn't meant to say. But when he opened his mouth, it was all Eugene.
"A hundred years swabbing decks wouldn't be too bad if it was spent with you, though I am not to sure about looking like one of those things."
Wait for it...
"Well if he could get my nose right and I do have a neck for gills they would look..."
To most people, it would seem that Rapunzel's slip had made it through undetected. Rapunzel wasn't most people though and she knew her husband. Wait for it...
"Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa..."
Yup, there is was. Rapunzel laughed nervously and motioned to Davy Jones, "Could you, uh, could you just give us a second, please?"
She turned back to her husband, gently placing her hand under his chin and shutting his mouth with a soft click of teeth. "Eugene, sweetheart," she began, letting her hand remain on his cheek. "I didn't want you to find out this way...in fact, I didn't want to find out the way I did either and there is a lot more to this than you know or that I'm even going to go into until we are safely away from all this but- well..." Rapunzel took a deep, cleansing breath, smiled brightly and looked into his eyes, "We're having a baby."

"Eugene, sweetheart,""I didn't want you to find out this way...in fact, I didn't want to find out the way I did either and there is a lot more to this than you know or that I'm even going to go into until we are safely away from all this but- well...""We're having a baby."
"We're having a baby" "Having a baby." "A baby." "Baby." "Baby." "Baby."
Her words echoed through my head and I wish I could say that I panicked and fretted with this revelations, but truth be told I was over joyed, ecstatic even over the moon as they say. So I kissed her, I kissed Rapunzel with all the reverie life could possess.
"I love you, I love you both."
This then put the whole thing with fish insultee into new perspective.
"Though I do wish you could have told me that before I poked a sleeping bear."

This was the way the moment was supposed to be. She smiled against his mouth as they kissed, everything else fading away. If they were together, they could get through it all. All the bad that had happened from the time she left the castle, they could fix it. Because they were going to be a family.
"I love you, I love you both."
"And we love you too," she replied, speaking for both herself and the new life that they had created. There was that one, wonderful moment. And then reality came crashing back in as they both turned to look at the nemesis who seemed to be getting angrier by the minute.
"Though I do wish you could have told me that before I poked a sleeping bear."
"You came in poking the sleeping bear. I wouldn't have had time to tell you if I tried." Rapunzel pointed out. Silence reigned for a moment as they both stood there taking in their adversary.
"...we're definitely getting blown up, aren't we?"

"Eugene!" the woman uttered quietly, though nothing escaped Jones. "I think we have a lot bigger problems here than fish insults can solve. The crew is petrified, there is ice shooting from my fingertips, an octopus-man wants us swabbing his decks for the next hundred years and I would really like our child to live to see her own birth!"
With a slight pause she turned from her cleaved to face him again. "Mr-uh...Captain Jones. I really am very sorry for all this...um...inconvenience. But we won't be joining your crew today. And if you continue to pursue us, I'm afraid that I will have no choice but to...freeze. All of you. Onboard."
A slew of insults flew his way again as the whelp did not know when to close his mouth, except for when the witch did it for him, literally. The captains face furled with rage at not just the insolence but the fact that they seemed to forget he was there! "We're having a baby." The words that came from her mouth brought with them the most profound pain Jones had felt in a long time as they shared a heartwarming moment between themselves. It tore through him yet seemed to emanate from... afar... As the moment passed his fury returned tenfold! "Ah, Love! Family..."
"Though I do wish you could have told me that before I poked a sleeping bear" came that masculine voice followed by the feminine retort. "You came in poking the sleeping bear. I wouldn't have had time to tell you if I tried... we're definitely getting blown up, aren't we?" Jones drew himself up to his full height and began to recite the incantation he had uttered many times before. One he reserved only for those whom he had a vested interest in tearing them not just from this world but from their hopes and dreams and their... love.
"Let no joyful voice be heard! Let no man look up at the sky with hope! And let this day be cursed by we who ready to wake...the Kraken!" His words were punctuated by the crack of the Bosun's whip as his crew had assembled around the main mast to turn a large crank that protruded up just forward of the base. A large wooden beam rose from the center and as it reached its apex it slammed down with a heavy thud which was felt in the planks of all three ships and beyond...

Eugene Fitzherbert
"Let no joyful voice be heard! Let no man look up at the sky with hope! And let this day be cursed by we who ready to wake...the Kraken!"
I let out a fake over exaggerated yawn not paying one iota of attention to Davy Jones.
"You can't have one moment alone with your family before some fish guy shows up and starts giving you his life story."
I puffed myself up to mimic the Dagonic pirate, inclufing cheeks always puffed up creating a "paf" noise on certain words that pass my lips.
"Listen as the almighty Puffer fish wakens last nights wench. Wake the Kraken."
I deflated myself before laughing at my own joke knowing no one else would.
"Haha, I can't even understand what you are saying half the time yet you go on and on. A Kraken... right... sounds ridiculous..." I crack up laughing again before putting my head on Rapunzel's shoulder and looking up at her. "What's a Kraken?"

He watched as they clearly could not comprehend what came next. "Haha, I can't even understand what you are saying half the time yet you go on and on. A Kraken... right... sounds ridiculous..." A smile spread across the Captain's face as Eugene laid his head on Rapunzel's shoulder. "What's a Kraken?"
Jones took a step forward towards the rail. Into the rail. Onto the deck next to the couple, along with a sizable boarding party.
"You're about to find that out, aren't ye? That's if I leave anything of you left for the beast to devour!" The pirate crew broke ranks and started harrying Eric's men on all sides. Man and beast drew their swords but Jones did not. He only took slow methodical steps, closer and closer to husband and wife.

"Let no joyful voice be heard! Let no man look up at the sky with hope! And let this day be cursed by we who ready to wake...the Kraken!"
The ship shook from the shock wave as the falling of the beam signaled an end to the fearful incantation. But what was far worse was the jolt that followed. Rapunzel grabbed onto Eugene's doublet to catch herself from stumbling as the deck suddenly rocked violently, shattering the ice that bridged the water between the two vessels. The crew of the Shooting Star steadied themselves quickly, a few glancing warily over the rails but the sea was once again still.
"You can't have one moment alone with your family before some fish guy shows up and starts giving you his life story."
"Eugene..." Rapunzel warned softly. But her husband either didn't hear her or just didn't heed it as he continued on in an, actually fairly accurate but definitely insulting, impression of the man now bent on destroying them.
"Listen as the almighty Puffer fish wakens last nights wench. Wake the Kraken."
As Eugene continued to speak, Rapunzel knew that there was something gravely wrong. The water surrounding the ship began to cloud and hiss. Some of the men leaned over to get a better look. Most backed away towards the center of the decks.
"Eugene..." she said again, this time more urgently. But he was already on a roll and barely seemed to notice the peculiar way that the sea began to toil around them.
"Haha, I can't even understand what you are saying half the time yet you go on and on. A Kraken... right... sounds ridiculous..."
A slow, menacing smile seemed to spread across Davy Jones' face as Eugene laughed hysterically, letting his forehead come to rest on Rapunzel's shoulder.
"What's a Kraken?"
Rapunzel couldn't suppress her scream when, as if in the blink of an eye, the terrifying captain no longer stood on his own ship but appeared right before them! Several of the other sea encrusted crew from the Dutchman joined him on the deck of the Shooting Star.
"You're about to find that out, aren't ye? That's if I leave anything of you left for the beast to devour!"
All hell broke loose. The invading crew attacked viciously, showing no mercy to the men of the Shooting Star. Swiftly, a huge tentacle shot forth from the sea and grasped a man in its grip before snatching him back down to the depths. The Kraken.
Rapunzel held Eugene tightly, shrinking behind him as the captain purposely advanced towards them. More barbs emerged from the water, assaulting the rig and those who had called her home but not one came near the couple at the center of the decks. It seemed Jones wanted to finish them himself.

The horde of sea things descended upon us within the blink of an eye, one of the crewmen dropped at my feet his sword barely drawn. The opposing Captain is on us in no time as well, I am in disbelief at how fast he can move, "You just had to poke the sleeping bear didn't you Eugene" I mumble to myself following it with "Why stop now?"
I swoop down and grab the sword of the crewmen before I point the tip of it towards the pirate and put my other hand in front of Rapunzel slowly bringing her behind me. I grip the handle tighter and open my mouth to deliver the quip of all quips to put ole Kalimari breath off balance, "...I cant think of a single thing to say..."

One massive tentacle grasped a member of the opposing crew and yanked him from the deck with a scream caught on the wind. His sword twirled end over end and clanged to the deck in front of the couple before him. The loud mouthed man picked it up and leveled it at the captains chest as the sound of steel, pain, and breaking timbers started to rise around them.
"...I cant think of a single thing to say..."
Jones honestly thought he'd never hear the end of it. "Allow me to save you from having any second thoughts!" He drew his sword and threw several heavy blows at the young man forcing the two of them back towards the starboard side. Another slimy tendril crashed to the deck behind them and snaked along dragging several guns from the right battery over the side into the sea. In the midst Rand and several of the larger men had gathered with spears attempting to drive the creature from the Shooting Star.

Finding Eric's ship was not difficult. There was unrest in the sea. A steady flow of underwater creatures all spiriting away from the same direction. It gave Ariel her own feeling of unease but the thought of Eric's smile, combined with her own natural curiosity, made her press on.
The source of the disturbance quickly came into view. A humongous creature floated right below the surface of the water. Its tentacles consistently breaking through to the world above, attacking a ship that lay at its mercy. Eric's ship. It had to be. Being laid to waste by the Kraken. Yes, Ariel knew what that creature was and exactly what its presence meant. And she was already forming a plan.
What she found once she surfaced was exactly what she expected. Davy Jones, captain of the Flying Dutchman. She should have known that he would be looking for Eric after such a near-death experience. Now he seemed to be threatening a young human couple on board the ship.
"Jones! Perhaps you should be more concerned with sailing the seas of King Triton and less concerned about adding to your crew."

Jones kept pressing the couple back towards the waiting grasp of his pet with each heavy chop from his cutlass. The monster watched to the side with satisfaction as another tentacle broke up the last of the crew that stood against them, hauling several screaming into the depths and the Kraken's own waiting maw.
His smile faltered as he heard someone shout out to him. "Jones! Perhaps you should be more concerned with sailing the seas of King Triton and less concerned about adding to your crew." His attack stalled long enough to turn and look out over the battered rail to see a face in the water. A mermaid... He knew that face. "You had best swim for your wretched little life! Your father wouldn't spare a second thought for the likes of these, I am the sea here!" With a snap his head turned back to Rapunzel and her loud mouthed consort.

"You had best swim for your wretched little life! Your father wouldn't spare a second thought for the likes of these, I am the sea here!"
Ariel gave an unimpressed laugh, "No, I'm sure he wouldn't. But he would definitely reserve several for you seeing as you have entered our kingdom after expressly being told that you are not welcome here." Her eyes narrowed as he advanced on the couple before him. "Or have you conveniently forgotten that you are not the sea here as long as Triton rules?"
It was the truth. If her father knew Jones was there, he would be furious. Unfortunately, he likely had no idea yet. But Jones didn't need to know that. And Ariel could bluff with the best of them. "Fortunately, for me, he is on his way at this very moment so it looks as if you have a decision to make. Continue your ridiculous vendetta and wait for my father to turn you into calamari with a flick of his trident or take your ship and live to sail another day."

"No, I'm sure he wouldn't. But he would definitely reserve several for you seeing as you have entered our kingdom after expressly being told that you are not welcome here." Her eyes narrowed, challenging him. "Or have you conveniently forgotten that you are not the sea here as long as Triton rules? Jones could not contain the exasperation in his stance as he again swung back to face her, granting the two helpless humans before him a moment of respite. "I do not see your self proclaimed King, I only sense his subjects in flight!"
"Fortunately, for me, he is on his way at this very moment so it looks as if you have a decision to make. Continue your ridiculous vendetta and wait for my father to turn you into calamari with a flick of his trident or take your ship and live to sail another day." Fury bubbled up his throat and Jones let out a cry. It had meaning as the Kraken's assault haulted. It had been about to crack the mainmast in half but instead released its hold on the Shooting Star and those crew unlucky enough to have found themselves in its grasp. Unfortunately for them it did not put them down, it let gravity do its work. Several man crashed to the deck with a sickening thud and the tentacles all darted below the surface of the ocean from whence they came.
"He cannot command me and neither you nor he will forestall my judgement! Fire!" The Dutchman let lose a volley from both sides, the crew having worked the ice off the long guns. The cannon fire raked the decks of both Eric and Rapunzel's ships as Jones crew sprang back into action with their blades.

Rapunzel gasped as they pressed closer and closer to the creature terrorizing the ship. She felt the cold rush over her again and, with absolutely no idea what she was doing, threw her arms behind her letting out a few streams of frozen ice. But the Kraken was too fast and the attack did not hit its mark.
"Jones! Perhaps you should be more concerned with sailing the seas of King Triton and less concerned about adding to your crew." A voice from the sea interrupted Jones' advance and Rapunzel followed his gaze over the rail to see...a girl in the water?
"You had best swim for your wretched little life! Your father wouldn't spare a second thought for the likes of these, I am the sea here!"
No, not a girl. A mermaid. The realization dawned on Rapunzel as Jones' attention turned back on them.
"No, I'm sure he wouldn't. But he would definitely reserve several for you seeing as you have entered our kingdom after expressly being told that you are not welcome here." "Or have you conveniently forgotten that you are not the sea here as long as Triton rules?"
"I do not see your self proclaimed King, I only sense his subjects in flight!"
She didn't know who this mermaid was or who her allegiance lay with, but Rapunzel was grateful to her all the same as she gave them something very precious- a distraction. As Jones' attention was once again drawn towards the mermaid, Rapunzel slipped out from behind Eugene and carefully moved in the other direction so that she was behind Jones. All eyes were on the mermaid and the only one who seemed to notice the movement was Grimsby, huddled by the cabin door. She placed a finger to her lip and continued to move towards a large timber on the ground behind Jones.
"Fortunately, for me, he is on his way at this very moment so it looks as if you have a decision to make. Continue your ridiculous vendetta and wait for my father to turn you into calamari with a flick of his trident or take your ship and live to sail another day."
Hastily, the tentacles withdrew from the deck as the Kraken retreated. It seemed that the mermaid had hit a nerve. Rapunzel cringed as several of the crew hit the deck soundly but medical aide would have to wait. They had an octopus to deal with.
"He cannot command me and neither you nor he will forestall my judgement! Fire!"
The cannon fire rocked the ship and Rapunzel struggled to keep her balance. Still it wouldn't sway her. She had to get Jones away from Eugene. As the fight began once again with full vigor, she grabbed up the heavy timber and swung it at the back of Jones' slimy head. It hit with a satisfying crack.
"Over here, fish face!" Rapunzel swung the timber again. "Are you going to let yourself get beat up by a woman?"

The captain's gaze fell on his next prospect. He swiped a wide arch attempting to put him off balance, following it up with a chop and a quick thrust Jones gained ground. Locking blades he leaned in close enough for the man to smell his breath. His tentacles all flew out wide with the force of his battle cry as he put all his might into thrusting his arms forward to break their embrace. As his prey stumbled back Jones paused for a moment when he realized the woman was no longer hiding behind the young man. With a sharp glance to his peripheries he did not see the blow coming from behind until it hit. With a semi-solid crack the monster cried out in pain and anger.
Jones spun on Rapunzel and as she swung her makeshift weapon for a second strike. He snapped his arm up grabbing it in his claw. "Oh I'm sorry my dear, but I don't take women on my crew!" He applied pressure and splintered the timber in half. "Haven't you heard? It's bad luck!" The captain lashed out with his claw, making a few attempts to snap her in its clutches. When that failed he pulled his sword back for an overhead chop. "To the depth's with you!"

Mermaids, Krakens and ice powers, oh my!
Well this is just great, people are running around freaking out, the deck cannons sit there not doing their job, a mermaid is having a land dispute with Kraken's Mini me and my wife is attempting to do something incredibly dangerous and reckless without me, AGAIN! While everyone else was fighting and yelling at each other we could have just slipped out the back door but nooooooooooo someone has to be all heroic and a leader to people...
While Lady Lancealot over there tries to attack Lord of the Tentacles with a stick I make my way over to the deck cannons. I pull a pin allowing me to roll the cannon out and spin it around, who knew these things were actually heavy and required effort to move. After a little back and forth I eventually managed to turn the cannon around and pick up a flint ready to grant the cannon its right to roar with life.
"Yoohoo, fish sticks! Big cannon blow out!" I yell out to get their attention and that is when I drop the smokey flint on the cannons fuse which quickly burns through. Only nothing explodes and no cannonball shoots out, I lean forward and look down into the cannon and that's when it hits me, I forgot to load the cannon, rookie mistake. I stand back up placing my hands on my hips and attempt to shrug it all off "Pffft, I pictured that going differently in my head..."

"Oh I'm sorry my dear, but I don't take women on my crew!" Rapunzel's heart beat wildly as Jones split the timber in half like it was nothing more than a twig. Weaponless against a person-sized, sword-wielding, crab-clawed cephalopod mollusc... she'd been in more dire straits before and made it through...right? "Haven't you heard? It's bad luck!" The giant lobster claw that was his left hand lashed out against her and it was all Rapunzel could do to stay a step ahead of the snapping pincer. She cried out as the tip nipped her bodice, just barely missing contact with the skin of her stomach. Then Jones' sword rose above her head, ready to come down at any minute to end her life. Nope, this was definitely the worst. "To the depth's with you!"
"Yoohoo, fish sticks! Big cannon blow out!" Eugene's voice carried across the deck like a savior, pausing the villain in his tracks. The sword remained raised as both he and Rapunzel looked to where the shout had originated. Neither had time to move before the canon aimed at Jones....did nothing. She shook her head as Eugene realized he had forgotten the most important part of explosive-based propellants- the ammunition. "Pffft, I pictured that going differently in my head..."
But he gave her the moment that she needed. "You know, fish keeps better when it's on ice."
She threw her hands out and the tingling, cold feeling shot down her arms and through her fingers. A surge of blue and white magic poured from them, flying through the air until it hit its intended target. Immediately on contact, the magic encased Davy Jones from toe to head in a sparkling sheath of solid ice. Rapunzel didn't move, her eyes fixed on the now frozen enemy.
The only sound was of Rapunzel's labored breath as the crew from both sides halted their attacks, staring in shock at the frigid, horrifing statue that occupied the spot where Davy Jones once stood. Hesitantly, a particularly brave member of the Dutchman's crew, whose head resembled a hammerhead shark, took a few steps towards his captain. He slowly raised a badly scaled hand up to the octopus' forehead and gave it two sharp taps. When nothing happened, he turned back to look at the rest of his crew. Before anyone could stop them, even if they wanted to, the crew of the Dutchman- including their iced captain, were back on their ship and disappearing into the depths.

I ran over to the port side of the ship, or maybe it was starboard I didn't really bother to learned which was which and watched as the ship skulked back into the depths. I threw my arms out wide and puffed my chest up "How do you like me now barracuda breath?!"
I turned back around to face Rapunzel she looked exhausted and her breathing was labored. I quickly shuffle over to her and put an arm around her waist. "I'm trying not to freak out here but I am very interested by your hands and the magical ice qualities they posses, how long have they been doing that exactly?" I thrust my hand out and awkwardly shake it creating the best twinkling ice sound I can manage. "I mean that was incredibly dangerous you are looking after a plus one now, I totally had him... A plus one... Haha a family... which reminds me, you have some splaining to do."

Ariel's eyes reached the size of saucers as the steady stream of blue and white magic hit her father's nemesis and left a solid frozen replica of him in his place. Being the daughter of King Triton, she was no stranger to magic but never before had she seen something like that. Needless to say, she was quite a bit impressed by the show. The Dutchman sunk back into the depths, hopefully leaving for far off waters in which to thaw out their captain.
Now that the danger was gone, Ariel realized that she had not fully thought out what came next. The young couple, understandably, seemed involved with their own affairs. But the deckful of sailors stared at her as if she were the goddess Calypso herself. Likely they had never seen a mermaid before. Even so, the attention left Ariel feeling a bit awkward. Finally, an older man pushed his way towards the rail, straightening his waistcoat as he did. He had an air of dignity despite his disheveled appearance and a grandfatherly warmth that made Ariel liked him right away. "My dear, it seems we owe you a great deal. Things were not looking well for us before you bravely stepped in against that..." The man grasped at his words before just letting them trail off. "I'm Grimsby, first mate of this vessel. If there is anything we can do to offer our goodwill, please don't hesitate to ask."
"Actually, I believe we have a mutual acquaintance who could use a ride from shore." Ariel spoke up, daring to let herself coast nearer to the ship. "Your captain. He's marooned on a small island not far from here."
Grimsby paused, emotion flooding his features before he managed to wrest them back under control. "Eric. Is he alright? We feared the worst."
"Yes, though very concerned for all of you. We heard the canon fire." She gestured to the long boat, thankfully still in tact. "If you row about twenty minutes south, you will find him. I should return to him now, he must be out of his mind with worry."
Grimsby merely nodded, still overcome by the news, as the less injured of the crew began to ready the longboat. Ariel disappeared under the water, confident that they would have no more trouble.

"I'm trying not to freak out here but I am very interested by your hands and the magical ice qualities they posses, how long have they been doing that exactly?"
Despite the sudden dizziness that accompanied that last large bit of magic, Rapunzel cracked a smile as Eugene recalled her mind to that night next to the campfire when they first opened up to each other. How far they had come since then.
"I mean that was incredibly dangerous you are looking after a plus one now, I totally had him... A plus one... Haha a family... which reminds me, you have some splaining to do."
"Well, Eugene, when a man and a woman love each other very much..." The faintly sarcastic reply died on her lips. What was she doing? It wasn't the time for jokes. Not there was the very real possibility that their child was still in danger. With all of the excitement of the Flying Dutchman, their encounter with Rumpelstiltskin seemed a distant memory. But as her adrenaline faded, the memories washed back over her- a tidal wave in all its terrible glory.
"I'm sorry. I'm so sorry." Rapunzel whispered, though she wasn't sure to whom. The tears she had been suppressing finally broke through, full of vengeance for being held at bay so long. She fell into Eugene's arms, burying her face in the safety of his chest. The apology, now almost indiscernible, repeated over and over. To Eric, to her child, to Eugene...
It took several moments before she took control again, stopping the sobs but leaving her face tear streaked and her throat raw. Eugene had to be completely bewildered by now. He deserved explanation but how could she tell him? How was she supposed to tell Eugene about what she let Rumpelstiltskin do to their child? Hesitantly she opened her mouth but the words wouldn't come. Thankfully, they didn't have to. A voice, that Rapunzel recognized as that of one of Corona's navel captains, boomed over the deck. "Pirates, you are under arrest for the abduction of Princess Rapunzel of Corona."
Corona's highest ranking naval ship now flanked the Shooting Star, a gang plank linking the two ships together to allow boarding. Officers filled the deck, swords drawn and pointed at the beleaguered crew.
"No." Rapunzel's voice sounded over the captain's, stronger than expected. She pulled away from Eugene, her eyes never wavering from the naval captain as she walked slowly to meet him at the center on the deck. "There has been enough destruction here." She turned outward, letting her words address the entire assemblage. "I do not care what kingdom these men are from or what their mission was that brought them here. These are good men and you will unhand them. Their captain put his life on the line to protect me and they fought valiantly against horrors that can not be imagined. Our quarrel with them is settled."
Her borrowed strength was beginning to wane but Rapunzel pressed on, her eyes searching for the acting captain of the Star. The elder man leaned against the rail, thankfully looking unharmed. "Grimsby, as acting ambassador of the royal family of Corona, I offer you and your crew sanctuary. We will provide you with medical attention for those who have injuries, assistance with the repair of your ship, shelter and supplies. Whatever you need. And we will see to it that your captain is reunited with you."
Her gaze returned to her naval captain, "See to it that my orders are carried out and that these men are treated as guests of our kingdom." He nodded to her and turned to his men, "You heard the Princess. Help these men onto our ship. Make them as comfortable as you can."
Lowering his voice, he looked back at Rapunzel with concern, "Princess, please do not take offense to my bold observation but you are not looking well. May I help you onto our ship?"
All she wanted was to be back in Eugene's arms. But she nodded, the guilt weighing so heavily that she knew she would not be able to look her husband in the eye. She couldn't tell him.
