Henrietta sat on the bed of one of the smaller cells within the castle. She buried her face in her hands as she gently rocked, the tears falling as she couldn't get the image of her father out of her mind.
She'd come back to herself after having lost control again. She'd found herself in her lab, unaware of how she'd gotten there and once again, there were items broken and strewn around the room. And blood. Lots of blood. She'd heard a weak cry for help and her heart raced. What had she done? Slowly making her way to the other side of the room, she turned the counter to find a man broken and bleeding. "Father!"
He'd looked frightened of her and had attempted to shrink away when she dropped to his side and cradled his head in her lap as the tears spilled down. "Father, I'm so sorry," she had cried but he couldn't hear her. He appeared to have stopped breathing and she tried to feel for a pulse but then the pounding at the door started.
"What's happened in there? Open the door!" The pounding continued and she fled out the back as she heard the door crashing in and the sound of voices shouting. "Is he dead?" one shouted. "He went out the back!" she head another call.
Etta stumbled and she swiped her eyes clear of tears. The sound of footfall closing in behind her made her veer down an alleyway. Knowing she couldn't outrun him, she broke off a small board of wood from a discarded crate and turned to face her pursuer. "Etta?" she heard the town lawyer say in shock. "I'm so sorry," she'd said before knocking him out cold.
She'd headed straight to Victor's castle just as night was falling and demanded he lock her up immediately before she'd cried out her confession. She'd killed her father. Mr. Utterson, the town lawyer and one man who had tenaciously been trying to uncover the mystery behind the reports of a monster killing people in their town had caught her in an alleyway, covered in her father's blood. It left little doubt that he'd solved the identity of the monster and would be alerting the village. She should have killed him but she didn't have it in her. At least not in this, the real version of her.
Victor had assured her he'd keep her safe and would work out a plan. She appreciated his misguided gallantry but one man couldn't stand up against the town or convince them that Mr. Utterson's claims were wrong. Besides, she deserved punishment for what she had done.
What would they do to her, she wondered as her tears subsided. A trial, to be sure, but how would she explain not remembering what happened while she was overtaken by Hyde or how would she explain Hyde, for that matter. What if her work is seized and studied by scientists and more like Hyde were accidentally created? What if she was seized and studied by scientists?
She looked down at her blood-stained hands. Whatever happened, she deserved it. She didn't know how she was going to live with what she'd done to her father. Again, she felt her eyes sting with tears as she made an attempt to scrub the blood off with her skirts.

"Did we lost a little bit of control, deary?", the sound of a creepy voice from within the cell assailed her ears. Rumpelstiltskin was sitting in a corner towards the bed. He had seized the moment Jekyll was busy scrubbing down the blood off her hands. So she didn't notice him entering the cell with his magic. Of course he was no fool, as he knew about magic wasn't well-received in here. But he couldn't made his appear without it though. Rumpel inclined his head, kept watching her urgently.

Henrietta jolted upright as she stared at the intruder. Her heart had already set to racing at the unexpected voice so near to her and the sight of the voice's unusual owner kicked it up another notch. She placed a hand over her racing heart as she looked to the door in a panicked thought that it was open. Come to think of it, she hadn't heard the ancient hinges creaking in protest since Victor had locked her in.
How did he get in? Secret passage? Secret hatch? How long had he been there? Had he been there the whole time? So many questions with impossible explanations raced through her mind that all she could manage was, "How...?"

A jolly giggle came out from the corner towards her, as it already subsided. With a slowly move Rumpelstiltskin was approaching her and left the shadow by degrees. Now Henrietta would see the colours, the red-brown of his crocodile leathered coat. For sure the first colours she have ever seen. "Not how...", Rumpel finally responded, while positioning himself in front of the bed. "The right question...is...WHO!", he continued with a wagging finger, raising his voice. "Who is the one, able to take you out of your prison?" With an expectant look he watched the young woman in front of him. The missing colours let everything look like a bleak portrait. No colours - No magic. Not nearly like in Fairytaleland at least.

Etta was momentarily speechless once again as the man approached. Man... or creature? His skin was reptilian. His eyes were abnormally large and almost seemed to glow with a reflective quality found in nocturnal animals. His clothes were odd as were his mannerisms and he seemed brighter, for lack of a better explanation, which was odd in this dark dungeon. She couldn't quite describe it.
She mentally shook her head to clear it. It was rude to stare no matter how a person appeared. It was also impolite to comment on such things so she did as any lady with the manners of a good upbringing would and looked past the differences.
"The door is locked so unless there's some secret passage, I'm afraid leaving is not an option." She saw this as a good thing though. She needed to be kept under lock and key in case the monster took over. But then how did he end up in here with her? She would have seen him if he had already been there. Then again, she had been wrapped up in her grief.

"The door is locked so unless there's some secret passage, I'm afraid leaving is not an option."
Once again a giggle followed her words. How amusing she thought he wouldn't know this prison was more like an agreement to her. Of course he also knew the reason for it. What else would have brought him here... "I did not talk about these bars.", Rumpelstiltskin answered with an uninterpretable grin, pointing at the little window above. After a little pause he proceeded. "I meant... your... inner prison." To underline his words, he made a gesture with his hand, as it would extract something out of her heart from a distance. Now that would be the moment, when she had to realize that he knew about something. About something personal. Rumpel liked that moments most. Putting his fingertips together he again watched her urgently.

"But... that's not possible," she said, confusion furrowing her brow. "Nobody but Viktor has known until today. He and I have been working for days trying to find a cure. Some kind of reversal. You can't have found the solution in mere hours no matter how good of a scientist or doctor you may be. You need blood work. You need to run tests-" she'd started ticking them off on her fingers but stopped short as he continued to seem amused by some private joke.

Rumpelstiltskin started to grin again, paired with a short high-voiced sound. "A scientist?", he repeated, throwing a watch above to the barred little window and then back to the young grey woman. "No." He let his words following a short pause. "...A doctor..?", he continued, pointing his chin with the forefinger, as he would have had to think about it. "Incorrect." Rumpel liked the confused look in the woman's face. Of course she hadn't the faintest idea who was standing in front of her. As opposed to this he knew so much of her. He saw it... "Hmmm... But since.. I.. am no.. stick-in-the-mud...", he sayed with a raised finger. "...you will get a third try, deary!" Rumpel's large eyes again watched her, curious about her reaction.

Etta gave him an exasperated look. Not a doctor and not a scientist but claims he can cure her. No other form of trade seemed helpful for her situation and glancing at him, at that grin, the way he held himself, the way he spoke, as if he had the full confidence and belief that he could do anything and everything, she began to wonder of his state of mind. The small bit of hope that had begun to blossom started to wither.
"I'm beginning to wonder if you're mad as a hatter and if you try and tell me you're some kind of fairy godmother, here to wave your magic wand," she made a waving motion as if holding an invisible wand, "I'll wonder no more."

Rumpelstiltskin was amused to watch her stewing over his words. He liked it to see that infidel look at her face, while she doubtfully thought about if he really knows something or if he is just insane after all.
Rumpel's face began to radiate a peculiar joy, as he heard Henrietta's words. A fairy godmother? How wrong she could have guessed... Suddenly his face expression became a little more serious. "For my part... I wonder, how someone like you..." To underline his words, he pointed at her with his raising fingers. "...is not willing to believe." For a moment he just left open the words, fixing her. "Someone... who is able to transform into a..." Rumpel made a face, as he would have to think about the right term, only to spat it out with a verbal force just a little moment later. "...beast." Now the woman in grey couldn't longer persuade herself, that he DO know something...

Henrietta looked crestfallen. She thought of herself as a monster but to hear another refer to her as a beast made it all the more real. "That was science gone wrong. A chemical imbalance in the brain. I was trying..." she sighed. "It doesn't matter. None of it matters anymore. Whatever kind of help you're offering, I do not deserve it." Etta heard the villagers' shouts from the town square below as they echoed up the hill and off the mountains surrounding the castle.
"Let them do with me as they wish." She'd lost Gerhardt and now her father. She looked away in shame. "I've killed my father. I have nothing left to live for."

Rumpel was elated the term had exactly that effect it should have had. But this time he carried it off well, hearing attentive at her words.
"That was science gone wrong. A chemical imbalance in the brain.
Science, huh? That was the reason why no one in this boring grey land will ever amount to anything... not like magic makes it possible.
"I've killed my father. I have nothing left to live for."
His eyes again fixed the grey woman in front of him. "killed your father...?", he repeated softly, while approaching her a little more. "Is... that... so?" The corner of his mouth raised just a bit, as he slowly turned around with a shrug. Then with a high-voiced singsong he added: "Or is it... not?", already did some steps. Of course he was anxious to get stopped by her curiosity.

Her eyes shot back to him. "What do you mean?" she asked, sitting up straight as a board. "Is my father alive?" She hadn't had time to check all his vitals thoroughly. A quick feel for a pulse and she'd found none but perhaps it had been incredibly weak. Her shoulders slumped as she recalled his state. "Even if by some miracle he is still alive, he won't be for much longer."

"What do you mean? Is my father alive?"
A broadly grin appeared on his face. Now he had her on exactly that point he wanted her to. How easy it was to manipulate people, just with some little words. He could never desist rejoicing about that. But again he carried it off from her, as he even turned his back on her. Then with a very slow move he turned around, fixing the woman urgently.
"Even if by some miracle he is still alive, he won't be for much longer."
"There are no miracles existing, deary!", he suddenly answered with a knowing smile. "But..." Rumpel let a pause follow his words and raised his finger. "...there is.. MAGIC! And as it seems to be your lucky day... I am able to use it! So finally let me introduce..." Now a deep bow accompanied his introduction. "...Rumpelstiltskin! Or also known as... the Dark One!" Of course in this land his name probably did not went the circuit, but he couldn't do without that part even though.

"Magic?" she scoffed. And she was back to wondering of his sanity. Whatever game he was playing combined with her emotions already on a rollercoaster had her temper shortening. "A few may believe in such a thing but you'll have to forgive my skepticism. I am a doctor and a scientist. We are notorious for dealing in facts and do not believe in the unexplained. If you wish me to believe you, 'Dark One', I shall need proof."
She crossed her arms, believing that this would put an end to this nonsense.

Of course Rumpelstiltskin knew that she would react like that. These doubtfully jerks in the land without colour. Scientist... Pshaw! When will she give up that gossip?
"If you wish me to believe you, 'Dark One', I shall need proof."
Rumpel didn't like the way she pronounces 'Dark One'. This woman really was a bullethead. "Nothing easier than that...", he sayed, slowly raised up from his bow. In the next second there left just a colourful fog, that place he stood before.
"With my magic...", the sound of his creepy voice suddenly appeared from behind the woman in grey, close to her ear. "...I could awake your father just in seconds." It was on time to accelerate things, to finally get what he wants. "Just if...", Rumpel paused to made a played pondering face. "...I want to."

Henrietta blinked rapidly at the spot where Rumpelstiltskin had stood a moment before. Perhaps she was the one who was mad.
"With my magic...", "...I could awake your father just in seconds."
Etta leaped from the bed and nearly out of her skin. She backed away until her back hit the wall, staring at him in awe laced with fear.
"Just if...", "...I want to."
"I..." she began, her voice breaking. She gather her scattered whits. "I may not understand how you did that but... you did." She thought of his offer anew, wondering of the ramifications and thinking of Gerhardt's current state. But then, Gerhardt had been brought back from the grave. Her father, if this Dark One was to be believed, was still holding onto life. "Is it safe? Awakening my father?"

Yah, that was the way she should react in front of the Dark One. The reason why he choosed that force. Not longer to be the coward. He throw out a jolly laugh inwardly. Rumpelstiltskin watched her thinking about his offer. There was no doubt she wouldn't except it immediately. But that already belonged to his plan. It went out perfectly.
"Is it safe? Awakening my father?"
"It is safetier than doing nothing, isn't it?", he responded with a raising move of his head. "But...", he added more seriously. "All magic... comes with a price, deary."

Safer than doing nothing was not necessarily true. Again, she thought of Gerhardt and his state of mind. We was a monster now. Would that happen to her father?
"But...", "All magic... comes with a prize, deary."
A catch. There was always a catch so why had that caught her by surprise. "What is the price of saving the life of my father," she asked cautiously.

That view! It always was the same. As he would help out people because he has nothing better to do... Rumpel let her wait a moment, before she got her answer, the price for his help.
"I want you to... accompany me.", he finally spat it out, again gifting her a joyful grin. "To a land where no one will brand you as a witch... a land where witches won't be burned." That was enough for now. It wasn't necessary that she do hear more. "well? Will you let your father die... or do we have a deal?" He even was much more near her, as she probably wanted him to.

She attempted to shrink back but was already against the wall. "How long will we be away in this other land and what do you expect of me?" she asked wearily.
Yes, her father's life was important but if she would be unable to fulfill the expectations of this sinister creature after agreeing, what would become of her father and herself then?

This woman seemed to be very crafty. Anyway she wouldn't learn about his plans. As she could...
"A while...", so Rumpel just answered, removed a bit from her. As he knew Henrietta wouldn't palm her off with that, he added: "You will search for something for me." That was enough. She wouldn't get more information. And to make his point clear, he repeated another time. "Deal or not?"

She was about to agree but paused. Her father warned her to always think things through and not to be impulsive. If she'd heeded that warning, she wouldn't be here now. She wouldn't be a monster. Her father would be alive and well.
"I need a few moments to think it through." A few was all she could afford, she knew, as she was unsure how many more moments her father had.

Rumpel watched her, getting more impatient minute by minute. But this was important for his plans...
"I need a few moments to think it through."
"Oh good!", he spat out in a sarcastic way. "So I hope for you that are not the moments your father does his last breaths..." With that words he turned around, left into a magical fog, before the woman in grey could have respond anything. Sure she'll get her time, but Rumpel knew how to shorten it to a minimum... of course right after he payed a visit to the Dr... Frankenstein!

Again, she found herself blinking at the empty spot as she hoped the same thing. By following her father's advice, she was gambling with his life.
Henrietta sat at the back of the bed with her back against the wall, hugging her knees. She should have taken the offer. It would have been better to gamble with her own life and to agree to do his bidding. Whatever it was, it couldn't be worse than her losing control and killing innocent people.
Hearing the echos from the village below, she knew either way, she wouldn't be able to hurt people for much longer, whether it be by taking the Dark One's deal or by a swift trial and life imprisonment.
But Henrietta had no idea that the latter was not one of the options as the lawyer had taken it upon himself to play the role of judge and jury and was riling up the townsfolk for an old fashioned, barbaric burning at the stake.

Etta paced the small cell, going over the Dark One's offer. She had taken her fathers advice to weigh the pros and cons before blindly jumping in. Her current situation and her father's dire situation made her take heed to his warning. But even still, her decision was unchanged.
Returning to the place she'd been when he'd first appeared, she spoke to the empty room. "Hello? Rumpel..." what was the rest of it? She couldn't recall the strange name. "Dark One, I've made--" she stopped short at the sound of voices raised in anger approaching.
"Find her! Check every cell!"
She recognized the voice. Utterson had found her. If they checked all the cells, they would find Gerhardt. Panicking, she ran to the bars and called out before anyone could rush past to the cell after hers. "I'm here."
"Well, well. The monster is cooperative. Where is the key?"
"I can't harm anyone from here," she said, ignoring his question. "Please, let me await my trial here."
Utterson laughed derisively. "You want a trial? Fine." He leaned close to the bars and fixed her with a hate-filled gaze. "I find you guilty. Break it down!" he shouted.
Etta jumped back as some men rushed the cell door with a battering ram. One more slam and the door crashed inward. Etta shrank back as Utterson, flanked by a couple men, stalked her to a corner. They were going to execute her. She saw it in his eyes. If she was dead, the deal to save her father would be forfeit.
"Dark One!" she called in a panic.
"The monster calls for her master. Grab her quickly. She must be burned before she can summon the devil."
Burned! Before she could consider how he'd managed to rile the town into such a barbaric practice, each arm was grabbed by the men. She struggled as they dragged her out, pleading to be released but it fell on deaf ears. As they approached the door to the outside, she struggled harder and felt something within stir, lending her more strength. One of the men lost his hold but she saw stars before she could free her other arm as a fist connected with her jaw. Dazed, her struggles stopped as they dragged her outside.
