As I'm no first-viewer on this episode, I try to remember my feelings, when I watched it for the first time. Though it wasn't less interesting to watch! I love how the Pilot starts! That we get thrown in the story and awake together with Jack, for the time being only see and know what he does. So we feel as shocked and surprised as he does. I'm also totally fan of flashback scenes, which does the present make more clear. And I like how they are telling us more and more about the characters, which all are like an unwritten book in the beginning. The scene, in which the plane come to crash, is shown several times, but always from another perspective, so there is no way it gets boring or repeated. I love to see characters we already know in the flashback scenes from the others. The plane crashing scene is btw totally scary for me, more like every zombie or ghost story ever could, as it's such a real theme and I seriously wouldn't fly with a plane after watching it lol. The characters are very interesting so far, just like the actors are doing a great job playing them. When I see in their faces, I ask myself, what their story could be. I hope to get to know the story of every character. Actually I can't decide for a favourite character yet, as I like all of them so far. Oh wait, I don't like Shannon, as she is just laying there, bathing in the sun. Though I'm quite sure, we will learn about her story someday either. I liked the scene, in which Jack meets Kate and telling her the story about a girl he once had in surgery and that he allowed his fear to come out only 5 seconds. It's great how Kate then count the 5 seconds at the end of the episode to calm herself down. She became more brave during the episode.

If not THE best pilot in TV history, it's definitely one of 'em, and really should be seen on the big screen. This isn't your everyday pilot. It cost $10 to $14 million, the most expensive pilot ever at the time. It was directed by JJ Abrams, the guy who's now making the Star Trek and Star Wars movies. It was composed by Michael Giacchino, who's work will soon be heard in Jurassic World. These guys are no joke, and the first ten minutes of Lost let you know that. Those first ten minutes look and sound AMAZING.
Favorite moments in that opening sequence: Jack telling Hurley to stay with pregnant Claire, and Hurley holding HIS belly saying he's not going anywhere. That always made me chuckle. And then right after that, thing's settled down, Giacchino plays this beautiful music while the camera pushes in on Jack looking inside of the wreckage. I love that shot, with the creepy dangling hand.
But I think it's Jack and Kate's first meeting that I like best from this episode. Evangeline Lilly absolutely kills it for a (pretty much) first-time actor.

Just finished re-watching the Pilot: Part 1 episode and I love it as much today as I did the first time I saw it. Agreed, Ilona, not any less interesting even for my, gosh, I don't even know how many viewings I've had of the pilot. I know I saw season 1 a ton of times because I kept converting a bunch of family and friends throughout the run of the series into Losties and would sit and watch with them so of course, season 1 was seen a bunch of times. If not THE best pilot in TV history, it's definitely one of 'em, and really should be seen on the big screen. Wouldn't that be awesome? I'm telling you, if they ever decide to theatrically show Lost, I would so pay the ticket price! Or maybe I just need to get to know a theater owner and talk them into late night weekly screenings. And I agree. Though television has gotten better, thanks to Lost, I can't offhand think of a pilot episode that rivaled it. In fact, without being spoilery, I have to say almost all of Lost's season premieres and finales were phenomenal. I'm also a fan of the flashback form of storytelling. One of the great things about this show is the character development. The writers really made you feel for these characters and the flashbacks allow you to see deeper into their lives to better understand why they do or say the things they do and sympathize with them, even when they sometimes do or say things that are wrong. The acting is fantastic. The writing, the dialogue, the special effects, the sets, the costumes, everything. So well done that you forget you're watching a show as it all absorbs you into the moment. Repeat viewing allows you to see all the intricate nuances in the performance of the actors. Little hints to their story that you don't realize until you see more of their story. I've noted them and will point them out when we get to the actual episodes where we see the event that was hinted at. I also loved the Jack/Kate scene. Kate: "Do you have a color preference?" Jack: (grins) "Standard black." That scene launched my Jate ship. And the counting... you know, I should remember to try that the next time I'm ever in a scary situation. Even after all these viewings, I still find myself yelling "Don't go out that window!" at Seth Norris (the pilot). I mean seriously. Has the man never seen a scary movie? I remember the first time ever seeing the ep and when he puts down the transceiver and starts to go out that window, right away I was like, "Yah, he's dead." Even still, knowing it wasn't going to go well, the wrenching of his body up and down before it was ripped clean out of the cockpit followed by the splatter of blood on the windshield... scary chills! Personally, I think I would have stayed in the cockpit until that thing went away rather than go running out of it as Jack, Kate, and Charlie did. I'd have to say my favorite character in this ep was Jack both the first round and still now. He took care of so many people in that short span of time and when that was done, finally went off to take care of himself. It just goes to show what kind of selfless person he is to not only put off his own injury but to go off away from everyone to take care of his own as if not wanting to put any extra stress or pressure on others. I did really like Kate as well for braving the jungle to go along for the transceiver, even after witnessing the thing knocking around trees and that scene where she suddenly and surprisingly found herself alone, wow. The fear she felt was palpable and watching her come down from it as she counted was just amazing. Some other scenes I always enjoyed from this ep: Jack telling Boone he should seriously consider giving back his CPR license and then getting him out of the way by sending him on an unneeded hunt for pens, lol! Hurley giving Claire two of the food trays. When the thing moving through the jungle pushing around and knocking down trees appears, Walt asking "Is that Vincent?" And Michael all like, yah, no. Hurley trying to be sensitive about the presence of the kid and saying "b-o-d-y-s" and then Walt distractedly and without care spelling it correctly.

Did you go to the Fathom Events with the Damon and Carlton interview a few days before the series finale? (NO! spoilers ahead.) It played in theaters, and they played a few big scenes from the series. Wow, does it enhance the experience. I can't imagine watching the full pilot on the big screen. I think it'd almost be worth getting like 10 friends together to put up some money and rent out an auditorium.
You're right, though, Lost definitely paved the way for other pilots. Lost was even one of the first big shows to use the internet as a means for a show to become bigger than just an hour of TV each week. It became an obsession. Hell, I was almost more excited for an episode to end just so I could see what others thought about it.
As for Seth's death, I loved that scene! It reminded me of something you'd see out of Jurassic Park -- the way he was ripped from the window and the way the blood splattered on it.
Where does this episode rank for you? Top 20? 10? 5?

Did you go to the Fathom Events with the Damon and Carlton interview a few days before the series finale? (NO! spoilers ahead.) It played in theaters, and they played a few big scenes from the series. Wow, does it enhance the experience. YES!!! I went to that Fathom Events with a friend! I was so excited that there was something Lost-related in the theaters and when we found out about it, there was no stopping me from going! You're right, though, Lost definitely paved the way for other pilots. Lost was even one of the first big shows to use the internet as a means for a show to become bigger than just an hour of TV each week. It became an obsession. Hell, I was almost more excited for an episode to end just so I could see what others thought about it. It definitely made television better. Before it, TV had become a wasteland of reality shows. I hardly watched TV anymore. You know how it is. A show becomes popular and then every network and show copies that formula. Then Lost came along, became a huge hit and networks were like, gee, I guess people really do like to use their brains when watching something. Now, I can't even begin to tell you how many shows I watch, lol! Because of Lost, I'm a life-long loyal follower of J.J. Abrams, Carlton Cuse, and Damon Lindelof. After the very first Once Upon a Time panel at Comic-Con before the show had started, the room had been a smaller one and only half full if that. I had front row seat at the panel and after the panel, I walked up to the table and straight to Damon Lindelof and said, "Thank you for Lost. Thank you for making TV good again." He signed my Comic-Con badge which I have hanging from the corner of my huge Lost poster along my stairway. I also bumped into Jorge Garcia at Disneyland just the day after seeing him at the very last Lost panel at Comic-Con and also thanked him for Lost. I didn't ask him for an autograph or pic because he really didn't seem to want to be bothered so I kept it short and sweet. Yup, I believe they were actually the first interactive show, not counting reality shows that asked you to call in your vote. That doesn't really count anyway. Oh, it totally became an obsession for me! It still is, hence my reason for trying to scour the interwebs to track down Losties. It's so sad how every Lost forum is dead and/or shut down. I had such a hard time finding places to get the word out! I also looked forward to discussing and picking apart the eps after it aired! Everyone finding all kinds of different hints and clues and then jumping back on the DVR to rewind to those spots and being like, "Oh my gosh, I see it! I totally missed it the first time but I see it now!" So fun! They even made the long wait between seasons go by fast and with lots of fun activities that gave us so much more background information on things. Information that wasn't necessary to understand the show and what was going on but it definitely enriched it. I love how they described it in an interview that they created these entire backstories for the people and entities and such in order to help them avoid contradictions and it seemed like such a waste to not share the information they created. I mean, they created websites from scratch! Several of them! Filled with clues and ways for us to "hack" into these sites to get to more info. I've never had more fun than with this show! I really wish those websites were still up and running. As for Seth's death, I loved that scene! It reminded me of something you'd see out of Jurassic Park -- the way he was ripped from the window and the way the blood splattered on it. Where does this episode rank for you? Top 20? 10? 5? That was total Jurassic Park material! Obviously, Seth hadn't seen Jurassic Park. Or any movie, for that matter. Oh gosh, trying to rank the episodes became so hard to do after a couple seasons. So many episodes and so many of them are great! I'd have to say probably in my top 10 if not 5. I have to wait and see after I watch them all again to get that fresh feel on the eps but this is the one that started it all and it was incredibly well done. How can it not be in at least the top 10? There are definitely some other eps that were absolutely phenomenal and if I looked at an ep list, I could point them out but besides those and the pilot, it's just so hard to rank them! Pilot eps are the hardest and probably most stressful for them to make. It's the one that could make or break a show and with this one, they had the hard goal of answering so many people's comments of "How can you make an entire show about people stranded on an island last and stay interesting?" and the pilot ep shows you there's so much more to this than just people stranded on an island. Goal accomplished! What about you? Were you able to rank this and/or all the eps? That would be quite a feat to accomplish!

Ha!! I never name that connection! If he sneaks that line into the new Star Wars, I'll laugh harder than the line intended and get weird looks.

I think of parts one and two of the pilot as the same episode, and it ranked top 5.
I'm happy you're not against Damon (like some of internet) and got to thank him in person. That's great.

I enjoyed getting to know these characters, you get some great sneak peeks into these characters. The entire episode just makes you think and wonder, how are they going to get out of this? You could tell they all had that 'we should be dead right now' face. I mean no one survives that but they did and it makes for great television!
The panicked screams, the disorientation was so realistic, and I enjoyed that it was action-packed from the start. It was a great start to part one of the pilot.
I thought the same thing about the pilot, I was like - "Don't go out that window... oh he's dead." lol
Favorite parts: Hurley giving Claire the two food trays, Jack and Kate scenes, and just getting to know the characters.
(Cause it's not so fresh in my mind, the first bit of these reviews might be shorter than the more reasons ones I have watched.)
