"I would love to meet him. That is, if he has accompanied you on your travels here."
"Samson is currently at the tavern. When we return I shall introduce you to him," Philip watched as Blue ate the seed from Rose's hand but as soon as the bird was done, he was back in the trees and glaring at him- if birds could glare. "He's cautious, worried I will take advantage?"
"Here, hold out your hand," Philip did as instructed but she guided him mostly, her hand resting under his as she poured some seed into his palm. "It's okay, Blue. Come on," He watched as Blue flew down to Rose's wrist and took a few pecks before hopping onto his palm. Philip smiled and he too was about to say something, perhaps it would be profound but either would know.
Eyes connected and both seemed to get lost in each other's gaze. Blue was a forgotten memory and on instinct, he went to lean in to kiss her but Blue didn't forget about them. Giving Philips palm a nip before he got a chance. "Geesh, lesson learned."

As Phillip began to lean in, Rose felt as if some unseen power had taken control, pulling her closer to him in a hypnotic trance that sent a tingle through her from head to toe. Her eyes began to close as she started to lift to her toes but he suddenly jerked in surprise, breaking the spell.
"Geesh, lesson learned."
Rose opened her eyes, looking up at him in confusing but his attention was on his palm. She lowered from her toes and stepped back a little to examine what had captured his attention. Blue wasn't perched there any longer but his beak had left a little red mark. Thankfully, he hadn't broken skin. Rose looked up at the trees where Blue gave an indignant tweet. "Blue, shame on you," she chastised. "I'm so sorry," she said with a brief glance up at Phillip before returning her attention to his hand, carefully turning it in her hands to check for any other damage. "Blue can be protective. Does it hurt?" she asked with worry in her voice.

Philip was unsure what had come over him but he was drawn to her.
Mesmerizing and the bite...
"Blue, shame on you, Philip smiled and shrugged his shoulders, the bird was just being protective and he didn't blame the tiny bird. I'm so sorry," He waved his good hand and smiled as Rose started to scan his wounded hand. "Blue can be protective. Does it hurt?"
"No need to fuss, mi'lady, this was well deserved. He was just being protective," Philip turned to the little blue bird and bowed. "I apologize, Blue."

Rose disagreed that it had been deserved but she didn't argue for she didn't quite understand what had just happened. She'd never experienced a moment such as the one they'd just shared. To have been completely entranced, submersed in a feeling of... what was it exactly? A mixture of things. Bliss. Definitely bliss had been one of them. Joy, excitement, thrill, her blood singing in her veins as her heartbeat had quickened.
She'd been upset with Blue the moment right after having been pulled from it but with the force of how very much she wanted to feel that again, she came to the conclusion that perhaps Blue had done her a favor. It would take time to process so she reserved judgment and easily forgave her longtime companion.
Rose distracted those thoughts away by taking in her surroundings. Her ears picked up on the sound of water and she smiled. With newfound excitement, Rose handed the basket back to him. "This way," she said, grabbing his free hand and pulling him along.
Through the trees just ahead, there was a babbling brook. It was beautiful here. A small, quiet opening far enough from the tavern so that they'd most likely not have their solitude intruded, blanketed in grass, colorful flowers, and a water source that would draw forest creatures. She looked up at him, finding pure joy in such a simple thing as nature. "It's perfect."

Phillip accepted the basket from Rose with a smile, "This way," He followed after her without question, her hand now in his as she led the way. He felt as if he could follow her to the ends of the earth. When they arrived at the brook, he took a look around and nodded in agreement. The area was stunning and it was a perfect place to rest and enjoy a nice meal. He wasn't one for sentiment, not usually but something about Rose brought it out of him. "It's perfect." His gaze caught her own and a smile spread on his face.
"Indeed, perfect," He took the blanket and laid it out in a spot of her choosing.

Rose smiled shyly, her head tilting slightly downward. He'd said charming things to her the day before but they hadn't had such an affect. In his suave, heartbreaker mode it had been easy for her to brush off his flowery words. But now, as his real, genuine self, delivering a mere implication of a different meaning to what he was deeming perfect in two simple words combined with the way he was looking at her, Rose could feel a warm glow from her head to her toes.
In the few seconds she'd spent dazed by the smile he'd bestowed upon her, Phillip had laid out the blanket. "Thank you," she said, settling herself on the blanket. She placed the basket in the middle, forgetting about it for the time being. Rose was still too enamored with this spot of the forest, looking around, drinking it in. A few animals braved the small opening and approached the opposite side of the brook, drinking and casting them curious looks. "I haven't yet explored much of this kingdom. With the King's laws against poaching, I imagine much of the land remains natural and untrodden and its inhabitants happy and in good population."

Philip joined her on the blanket, settling in close but not to close. Not wanting Blue to dive bomb at his head, "I haven't yet explored much of this kingdom. With the King's laws against poaching, I imagine much of the land remains natural and untrodden and its inhabitants happy and in good population." Philip nodded in agreement, glad that not just anyone could come on the land and hunt. Before the degree, animals became less and less- his father made the right choice to protect these lands.
"I agree, the animals in this kingdom seem happier and content."

Rose began to unpack the basket. "He seems like a good king." As she opened the jam, her mind started wandering to the subject of kings; one in particular. The direction of the conversation presented an opportunity for her to learn about her father. It was, after all, the reason she'd risked visiting the kingdom neighboring his.
"I've heard the neighboring king is not so kind," she said, her attention on the biscuit as she spread jam on it. She placed it on a small plate and held it out to him, eager to hear his opinion on the father she'd never met.

"He seems like a good king." He couldn't help but agree with her statement, he certainly hopes he lives up to his father rule. He had a lot to live up to, "I've heard the neighboring king is not so kind," Her words were true and yet she seemed to form them into more of a statement.
"King Stefan, he is a very paranoid man. I have not met him in person but people here call him the mad king." His father dealt with king Stefan, his paranoia was known far and wide. He didn't trust easily and his father was unsure about bringing Philip along until recently, in truth, Philip was looking forward to it. "Several years ago he threw a grand party to welcome his daughter to the kingdom. Everyone was invited, everyone but one and because of this, a curse was put on the child. I was shy of my fourth birthday at the time, I only heard the stories as a child."

Rose listened intently, gleaning what she could from not only his words but his expressions and mannerisms whilst speaking of her father. She found that she trusted his insight and opinion and though it matched what she'd heard from countless others, it somehow felt more disheartening coming from him. Knowing she was a product of the Mad King made her suddenly feel self conscious, as if the deeds of her father reflected on her. Rose retrieved a second biscuit from the basket and dropped her eyes back down while she began spreading jam again.
"I heard the reason for the curse wasn't over such a small slight as to not having been invited," Rose said, feeling the want to defend Maleficent. During her stay with her, Rose had grown to care greatly for the misunderstood Fairy who had been so wronged then vilified by her father. Much of the vilification had been set by Maleficent's own hands when she'd shown up and set the curse. The very public event had then been embellished and spun into a false history that overrode the actual private events of the past.

"I heard the reason for the curse wasn't over such a small slight as to not having been invited," Rose always wanted to see the best in people, it was one of the things he admired about her. He took hold of some fruit, popping a piece in his mouth, "Perhaps you are right but I have heard no other version of this tale. Perhaps you know something I do not?" He smirked and leaned in a bit closer, keeping his eye on Blue. "Do tell."

A person who was open to hear other sides of a story to fairly judge someone he'd never met rather than to judge based off the version of history widely spread? With each moment, Phillip was proving himself to be more and more of a rare gem and Rose fell deeper and deeper. Rose crumbled up the last bite of her biscuit and laid it in a pile on the edge of the blanket for Blue to peck at.
Rose loved to tell stories and was especially happy to be able to tell Maleficent's story. She scooted closer, partially out of excitement and partially conspiratorially, trusting in sharing the private story with him. With his having leaned in, it put them at a cozy closeness seen in happy couples absorbed in their own private happy world.
"Once upon a time," she began, "there was a young fairy who lived in the moors, a sanctuary of magical creatures. She was very happy there, friend to all the other creatures in a secluded place where no human had set foot. Her days were filled with a joy she thought could never be surpassed... Until she met a human peasant boy from a nearby village who'd stumbled into her little world."
Rose gave a quick, brief history lesson to explain why this was a problem. "There was a time when the creatures from the two different worlds warred but they'd come to a peaceful understanding by keeping to themselves and keeping out of each others' worlds." She returned to her main story. "The young fairy and the young peasant boy did not care about such things from generations past. They formed a bond of friendship, spending every moment they could together, both feeding each others' curiosity about the other's world. Over the years, that friendship grew to love; something they confessed to each other when they came of age. Their happiness blossomed further but unfortunately, he'd also come to bid her farewell. He would be leaving for an extended amount of time, not knowing when he'd return.
"You see, ever since he was a young boy, he had high ambitions and now that he was of age, he was eager to obtain them. He went on to serve as one of King Henry's men. His feelings for the young fairy lady were a distraction so he avoided returning to the moors.
"Years went by and the two had grown to adults. King Henry had ambitions as well. He wanted to take control of the moors and so he sent his army marching toward them. The fairy, now a beautiful young woman, met them outside the moors and easily fought them off with the power of her magnificent wings and the help of her moor family. King Henry and his men retreated.
"It was soon after that the now grown peasant boy appeared once again in the moors. The fairy quickly intercepted him, now leery after King Henry's attempt to take over the moors. He told her he was there to warn her that King Henry would be trying again. She believed him, having not seen him amongst King Henry's men. The love that remained between them easily had them falling back into the way things were. They spent the rest of the day in each other's embrace, sharing what had gone on in their lives over the years they'd missed together.
"The next morning, the fairy woman was pulled from a deep sleep by excruciating pain. She found herself alone with the realization that the human she had loved had drugged her and had cut the magnificent wings right off her back. With the help of a raven that she adopted as her eyes in the air, she learned the truth. The man she'd loved had returned for the sole purpose of feeding his ambition. With her wings, he'd earned King Henry's full respect as he lay in his death bed. With no heir, on his dying breath, King Henry named him as successor to marry his daughter and take the throne."
Sorrow had grown in Rose's eyes as the tale of love had been destroyed by selfish ambition. "The fairy is now widely known and feared; her name is Maleficent. And the once peasant boy? He still sits upon the throne of King Henry. You know him as King Stefan."

The whole story felt like some fantastical fairytale, an old tale told through bards with very little credit to their name. They were drunk's who claimed they were there when the young baby was cursed and saw everything. He had no reason to believe such men but he had every reason to believe in her. Her words were spoken as if she memorized each detail as she herself had been there.
If this story was factual, Prince Philip could not deny justice for such actions. He needed a lot more proof before he took these matters to his father, the true king but he would truly search for all his answers-maybe that would be the next part of his journey?
Maleficent, he heard that name before. She lived in a land no one dare travel too. Unless you wished to seek a terrible end at the hands of a mad woman. "It sounds like she had gone through a great ordeal, however, she has done many terrible things in return."

Rose nodded in sad agreement. "It's true. Her actions may not be condoned, however, one can get a certain understanding for how she was led down that path."
Rose reached out and took Phillip's hands, speaking ardently in the hopes that Phillip would begin to see Maleficent as the deeply hurt and temporarily misguided but good woman Rose had come to know her as and not as the villain she was painted to be. "Could you imagine, giving your heart for the first time to someone, growing with them, spending years in happy bliss, only to have that person come back into your life to use your own heart against you? And on top of a crushed heart, having the thing you're most passionate about also cut away in the process?" Rose pulled her hand away, looking sadly into the distance. "To be able to fly," she began wistfully, "to have that gift taken from you." She looked back at Phillip. "Those wings were a part of her. As limbs are to us. It still pains her to this day, not only emotionally, but she lives in physical pain each and every day."
When she'd first brought up Maleficent, she'd made it a point to sound as if she were a third party making observations but her passioned and detailed insight into the life and emotions of Maleficent broadly hinted at a connection greater than that of an outside observer. Rose had made the choice of revealing this part of her past to Phillip in her need to fight on Maleficent's behalf and to have this man see the misjudged woman the same way she did.

"It's true. Her actions may not be condoned, however, one can get a certain understanding for how she was led down that path." He could indeed but this Maleficent was still a villain. She chose the path of evil, she could have taken any other path to seek retribution towards the king.
With her hands in his, he smiled and listened to her plea.
"Could you imagine, giving your heart for the first time to someone, growing with them, spending years in happy bliss, only to have that person come back into your life to use your own heart against you? And on top of a crushed heart, having the thing you're most passionate about also cut away in the process?" And her hands were gone and her face changed to that of sadness. "To be able to fly, to have that gift taken from you. Those wings were a part of her. As limbs are to us. It still pains her to this day, not only emotionally, but she lives in physical pain each and every day."
"To this day?" Philip was confused, did Rose know this Maleficent personally? Or was she just guessing? "You speak as if you know her?"

Rose watched Phillip as she slowly nodded confirmation of the conclusion he'd drawn. She was afraid that revealing such information might mean the end of this magical moment with him but she did not wish to lie to him.
"She was kind enough to take me in and shelter me for a time. I was a guest, not a prisoner," she reassured, leaving out the bit about why she'd ended up there in the first place and the rocky start so as to not add to the negative view already surrounding Maleficent. "She did not like to see me go for fear of my safety, but she respected my wish to continue my exploration of the world." Rose had barely caught herself from adding 'despite being hunted' to the end of that sentence. Honesty was one thing. Airing her troubles was another. She did not wish to ruin her short time with him by causing him distress on her behalf or despite the well intentions, for him to become yet another in a line of people wishing to protect her from freely living life.

"I am grateful that you were safe while in her care. I am also grateful that she allowed you to continue your journey, it has given me a chance to meet you." And chirp from close by caused a smile and he turned his head, "and of course you friend Blue, the highlight of this entire trip. I shall always remember him," He held up his wounded hand.

Rose once again took his hand to examine the wound. The red mark of Blue's beak had begun to fade. It would remain for a day, perhaps two, but there would be no remaining evidence of it beyond that time. Unlike the mark Phillip was making on Rose's heart. She had a feeling it would remain there for the rest of her days.
"I must apologize for that again," she said softly, enfolding his hand between hers. "It won't happen again. Isn't that right, Blue?" Rose pinned Blue with a stern yet soft look. Blue's head tilted this way and that as he observed the way his person tenderly held the man's hand and remembered the time she had cared for his wounds in the same gentle and loving manner. His person showed only care and trust to the man and the man seemed to respond to his person in kind. He ducked his head and responded with a short, contrite tweet. "There, now. A truce has been made," she said, a happy smile on her face when she looked back to Phillip.
She found herself immediately drawn into those mesmerizing blue eyes of his and couldn't remember what it was she'd been saying only a moment ago. It was a wonder how anyone could maintain a coherent conversation when he set those eyes on them. Movement near the water pulled her back to reality and Rose managed to pull her gaze away to look just beyond Phillip's shoulder. Her face lit up with wonder and joy. "A unicorn," she whispered.

"I must apologize for that again," Philip shook his head, their was no need for the apology but she could not be stopped. "It won't happen again. Isn't that right, Blue?" He smiled at her stern look and watched as Blue seemed to think about it. The tweet had his own smile brighten, "There, now. A truce has been made,"
"I hope Blue and I can remain on good terms," Philip gave Rose's hand a little squeeze in thanks. She was looking into his eyes and in turn he got lost in her own. She truly was a beauty he almost moved in for the kiss again but remembered the new truce between him and Blue.
"A unicorn," He slowly turned to see the Unicorn, it was magnificent.
"It's a sign, this is where we are meant to be."

Rose was thinking almost the same thing, only her thought had included just the last half; 'We are meant to be.' Rose smiled her agreement as she gathered a few slices of apple. She didn't let a little sorrow sneak into her smile until she was up and with her back to Phillip.
Rose took slow, cautious steps toward the unicorn, humming softly. The unicorn tossed her head but soon calmed as the melody of the fairy-touched voice reached her ears. "Hello, beautiful lady," she said with a small curtsy for the prideful animal before holding out her hand for the unicorn to take in her scent. After a couple sniffs, the unicorn took interest in the scent coming from her other hand. Rose chuckled and offered the treat. "Here you go." The unicorn took a couple more cautious sniffs, then began to nibble at the apples. Rose ran a hand along the unicorn's pure white mane. "You are quite the beauty, aren't you?"
Once the unicorn had become accustomed to her, she shifted to loving stroking the unicorns velvety nose. Unicorns were becoming more and more rare. It broke her heart to think that some day, they may all be gone. "Are you all alone out here?" she wondered aloud. Her question brought to mind Phillip's comment. If only this was where she was meant to be. But she shouldn't have come here in the first place. It was dangerous to have come so close to her father's kingdom. She couldn't stay with him, at least not here, and it wasn't right for her to ask him to leave his home and live a life always on the move and in hiding. It wasn't right to entangle him in her problems. She guessed he had a home here, a family, friends.

In all his years, he had never seen anyone charm animals the way Rose had. This magical creature was literally eating apples from her hand, allowing itself to be touched without fear. Philip said nothing, worried that his voice would scare the beautiful creature back into the forest. Instead, he stayed and watched as she talked to him lovingly, stroking him and just enjoying the company.
Philip wanted nothing more then to stay with her forever but his father would never allow it. He had obligations and Philip knew he must travel home soon, he had a duty to his kingdom and the more time he spent away- the more worried his parents would become.

The unicorn ate the last of the apples in her hand and began nudging around her sides and other hand for more. Rose giggled with delight at her shy demeanor suddenly turning bold and curious. She thought of a way to try and have Phillip join in this magical moment. "Phillip," she said, turning toward him while continuing to run a hand down the unicorn's velvety nose. "Would you please bring me more of the apple slices?"

Well so much for staying back and watching, nodding his head he moved slowly to grab the apples. Making his way closer, being very careful as he held out the slice's to Rose. He had never been this close to a unicorn, he'd seen them but never this close. "It's beautiful."

Rather than taking the apples from his hand, Rose took hold of his wrist and carefully guided him slower, murmuring to the unicorn all the while, observing the reason of both unicorn and man to be sure each was handling the other well.
When Phillip was near enough, Rose placed her hand under his as a gesture to the unicorn that she trusted him and therefore she could trust him. "Go on," she encouraged both as she maneuvered Phillip's hand near the unicorn's mouth.
All the while, the unicorn watched and took in the actions of the woman she trusted, seeing the trust the female human had for the male human. The unicorn sniffed the newcomer cautiously then ducked her head toward his hand and began to eat the offered apple slices.
Rose beamed up at Phillip. "I knew it. Just turn those blue eyes and that smile on any female and you have them eating out of the palm of your hand, don't you?" she teased on a chuckle. When he'd tried to use those attributes on her in the beginning, it hadn't worked and it gave her the right to tease him a little about it. It had been spending time with him and seeing that he was just as beautiful on the inside that had won her over and sent her falling. Rose ran her free hand over the unicorns soft mane and velvety hide. She looked up at him once again, teasing aside. "You can touch her. She trusts you," she said, though the way she looked at him suggested she wasn't necessarily referring to the unicorn anymore.

When the unicorn started to eat from his hand, it was hands down one of the most amazing experiences. He had never been this close before and now one was eating from his hand. "I knew it. Just turn those blue eyes and that smile on any female and you have them eating out of the palm of your hand, don't you?"
"Certainly wouldn't be the first time." He chuckled at his own response.
"You can touch her. She trusts you," Philip wasn't sure if she was talking about herself or the unicorn, either way he reached out to stroke the unicorn's mane.
"Thank you," He made sure to speak softly towards the creature. "Know you are safe here in this kingdom."

And there he went again, making her fall deeper with the way he took such care in making softly spoken promises to a creature whose continued existence depended on good people like him, like the King of this land who made it law to protect their preservation. She hoped that the next generation would continue to strictly uphold the current King's law. It was good to know that there were subjects amongst the kingdom who also held this law in high regard. Rose had no idea that this subject beside her and the next generation of the throne were one and the same.
With a quiet sigh of contentment, Rose rested her head against Phillip's shoulder and simply watched the two interact. She would be quite happy to remain here in this moment forever.
***An hour later***
Unfortunately, moments couldn't last forever. And so, after a bit more time with the magnificent unicorn, she and Phillip packed up their picnic and began their walk back to the tavern. Her time here was coming to an end. This had been meant as a short trip to appease her curiosity of the father she'd never known by passively inquiring subjects of the neighboring kingdom about the Mad King. She'd even gotten Phillip's take on her father during their picnic. Her curiosity was well appeased by now. She'd intended to stay only a night but the reason for her stay had quickly shifted from curiosity to her draw to the man beside her.
It was time now. Not just for her benefit, but for his. The more time she spent in his company, the harder it was to walk away. It wasn't fair to him. She couldn't stay and even if she did, she feared the danger it put him in. Rose had heard rumors of her father's plans for her once he got hold of her and being courted by a mere subject from a neighboring kingdom would devalue the bargaining chip he saw her as. Phillip was a good, noble man and if he felt what she felt toward him, she knew that should her father find her, he'd fight to free her from him. One man against an army didn't stand a chance, no matter how noble and how good his intentions may be.
As they neared the tavern, Rose stopped them shortly before the clearing, still in the privacy of the trees. She stepped around to face him. "I truly had such a wonderful time. Thank you, Phillip." She leaned up and kissed him on the cheek. "I'll never forget this day." 'I'll never forget you,' she added with a heart wrenching thought.

The time they had spent together was memorable. He could spend all day with Rose and it was what he wished for. "I truly had such a wonderful time. Thank you, Phillip." The kiss on his cheek was a welcomed surprise, he turned slightly to check for Blue. He was still a little unsure if he'd attack or not. "I'll never forget this day."
"I shall never forget this day," 'Or you'. His father would never allow him to marry outside a royal family. He barely approved of Philips lifestyle- but he planned on changing his ways. He wanted nothing more than to reveal his true identity and take Rose with him but it wasn't the right time. "Let's head inside," He kept a smile on his face but on the inside, he was filled with dread. Soon it would be time for him to head home...

At his proclamation that he, too, would never forget this day, her heart both soared and shattered.
Nodding her agreement, Rose headed back inside by his side. She had some making up to do for Ida's generosity and she would count the seconds until the supper rush was over and she was be free to enjoy a late supper with Phillip.
***A few hours later***
Rose rushed to clear the last of the tables and wipe them down, longing to be in Phillip's company once again.
She dropped off the dirty dishes in the kitchen and tossed the cleaning rags in the wash bin. Ida had two plates of food fresh and ready for her to take out with her. Rose smile over Ida's generosity, feeling herself choking up once again over the thought of leaving in the morning. She threw her arms around Ida and hugged her fiercely.
Ida laughed. "Careful, my girl. You'll crack my bones."
Rose gave a tear laden wobbly laugh and pulled back, reaching for the plates when Ida made an "ah" noise as she pointed up and down toward Rose. Rose looked down to see she still wore the apron. She laughed nervously and deposited it into the wash bin, then quickly went for the plates again and whisked away to the front.
"Your dinner, sir," Rose said with dramatic flair as she placed the plate before Phillip then took a seat across from him, content to watch him for a bit before staving her own hunger.

Philip watched her go inside, a goofy grin on his face. He wished they could be and maybe one day they would? For now, he would rejoin the others inside and let the day play through his head.
**Few Hours Later***
Philip had slipped away for about an hour, just to tend and treat his horse. Before heading back inside to enjoy something to eat. He much rather skip the rush of patrons, today he did not feel like entertaining a large group of people. His heart was heavy, it was almost time for him to leave.
His attention was pulled when he took in the sights of Rose. Smiling as she appeared with two plates of food. "Your dinner, sir,"
"That is twice you fed me today, Mi'lady. Or should I be thanking Ida?" His gaze went to the kitchen door where Ida was peering out. He waved at her and she ducked back inside.

Rose turned to see who Phillip was waving to and barely caught Ida ducking back into the kitchen. She chuckled and turned back to Phillip. "You should definitely be thanking Ida for our lunch," she said fervently, then ducked her head toward her own supper of a bowl of soup, spoon resting on the plate beside it and a warm piece of bread on the other and in a quieter, modest voice, added, "I made the soup and the bread."
She picked up her spoon and gave her soup a stir to even the temperature, waiting with anticipation for his assessment. Confident enough with her abilities in the kitchen, she hadn't much thought or wondered if the patrons had liked her cooking until they'd given their compliments. But now, she could do nothing but worry over his reaction. For some reason, what he thought held so much more value to her.
