First Years More information on First YearAs a first year, you have to take all core classes and you do not get any elective choices. You also must take flying lessons one day a week after your daily classes.

Second Years More information on Second YearsSecond years must take all core classes and no electives are available to them. Students are allowed to try out for their house Quidditch team starting at second year.

Third year students must take all core classes and must choose at least two elective courses. Beginning third year, students are also allowed to go on weekend trips to Hogsmeade- with a signed permission slip, of course.

Fourth YearsMore information on Fourth YearAs a fourth year, you must take all core classes and must choose at least two electives. Fourth years typically get more work than third years, to prepare for their O.W.L.S.

Fifth Years More information on Fifth YearFifth year students must take all core classes and may choose electives. The amount of homework drastically increases from fourth year and students prepare to take their O.W.L.S. at the end of term. Each student will also receive career counseling from their Head of House, to help them determine what N.E.W.T. level courses they need to take for their desired career.

Sixth Years More Information on Sixth YearSixth year students need to have passed their fifth year O.W.L.S. to have continued in a subject. Even if a student has passed the O.W.L.S. for a particular subject, the student may choose if they would like to continue in that subject. Passing O.W.L.S. grades
Outstanding [O] (always continues to N.E.W.T.-level) Exceeds Expectations [E] (usually continues to N.E.W.T.-level, at the discretion of the teacher) Acceptable (rarely continues to N.E.W.T.-level)
Failing grades Poor (may request to repeat the class) Dreadful [D] Troll [T]

Seventh YearsSeventh year students are expected to continue the N.E.W.T. level courses they choose at sixth year. At the end of the year, students take the N.E.W.T., a subject-specific exam that will help them pursue careers after graduation.
