"I do," ......."Alone." "I guess it's better that I was. If I'd been traveling with someone and they didn't make it," "I don't know how I'd have been able to handle it. It's bad enough help hasn't gotten here yet."
Bennett had expressed nothing but compassion at the thought of what Heidi was going through. Living on the island his whole life with his dad, the feeling of never seeing your family again was absolutely foreign to him. He never knew his own mother long enough to even miss her. He could only imagine what the feeling would be like to miss someone close to him.
"Still, it must be really hard being stuck on this island without anyone close," Bennett mentioned empathetically, "But I'm sure you will see them again soon," He continued as he looked over at her and offered her a warming grin.
"So you've never been to L.A.? Layovers don't count,"
Bennett smiled as he stepped over a tree stump, watching his footing. "Nope, I've never been. We're from Canada, me and Ethan, and we've been working the family business ever since I could remember. So we haven't had a whole lot of time for travel up until now," He said as his hands gripped the straps of the backpack, "But enough about me, what's your story, city girl? Ever been to Canada?" He asked In a moderately cheerful tone.

"But I'm sure you will see them again soon,"
I returned his grin, relieved to see that I wasn't the only one still optimistic about rescue.
"Nope, I've never been. We're from Canada, me and Ethan, and we've been working the family business ever since I could remember. So we haven't had a whole lot of time for travel up until now," "But enough about me, what's your story, city girl? Ever been to Canada?"
I chuckled at being called "city girl." That was a first and made me sound like far more of a sophisticated New Yorker. I thought of myself as more of the average, nondescript suburbanite.
"No, I've never been," I said with a quick shake of my head. "I hear good things though, especially about how friendly the people are." I gestured to him as an inclusion of said friendly Canadians. "I haven't been very many places actually. As far as outside of the U.S., only Mexico up until last week. Or two weeks ago," I corrected, remembering we'd been here over a week now since leaving Australia.
"So, family business, huh. That's a double edged sword. On the one hand," I waved my left hand, "you've got a job you can depend on but on the other," I waved my right hand, "working with family can be difficult." I knew that from experience. "Then there's the whole feeling of obligation and/or pressure to join the family business." My thoughts were distracting me into babbling. I got to the point. "All that matters is, are you happy?"
As soon as the question was out, I kept my eyes downcast feeling slightly embarrassed at my lack of manners. I quickly added, "Sorry, that was way personal. Feel free to think of it as a rhetorical question."

"No, I've never been," "I hear good things though, especially about how friendly the people are." "I haven't been very many places actually. As far as outside of the U.S., only Mexico up until last week. Or two weeks ago,"
"So looks like we're both new to this whole travelling thing," Bennett mentioned as he lightly chuckled. He led them back onto the path that she was originally heading down with not much longer before their sight would be graced by ocean and sand once more.
"So, family business, huh. That's a double edged sword. On the one hand," "you've got a job you can depend on but on the other," "working with family can be difficult." "Then there's the whole feeling of obligation and/or pressure to join the family business." "All that matters is, are you happy?" "Sorry, that was way personal. Feel free to think of it as a rhetorical question."
Bennett grinned amusingly as Heidi, being one of the most polite people he had encountered thus far, had felt the need to apologize. "No, don't be sorry," he smiled as he shook his head, "It's all good. There's definitely the challenges and struggles that come along with working within the family. But we always manage to get the job done and end the work day on a positive note. So I guess you could say that I'm happy," Bennett said, slightly applying the remark to his own personal life. Everyone that lived in his village, they watched him grow into the being he is today. To him, those people were considered family. And they all technically work for the same cause in a way. Oblivious to whatever else there could be in the world, Bennett was confident in the fact that he was one hundred percent happy in that moment. At least, that's what he's convinced himself to think.
"You seem to get what it's like to work with family, do you work with yours as well? Or what do you do for a living?" Bennett asked curiously.

"Is this the spot?"
"Yes, this is it. We can place the second antenna here,"
Sawyer waited for Sayid and Kate to do what they just did and watched them aimlessly.
"Hey, you came to help out, right?", Sayid suddenly addressed him.
"Me?", Sawyer asked unnecessarily and then answered with a nod. He watched Kate pulling the antenna out of Sayid's pack and handing it to him in silence. But inwardly Sawyer already started to roll his eyes. It just figured that they would let him do the donkeywork. Wordless he received the antenna from Sayid, an instruction following.
"We need you to attach this antenna to that tree over there," Sawyer's eyes followed Sayid's pointing upwards the tree. "As high as you can. You can handle that, right?"
"Golly, yes. Thanks, boss.", he replied in a sarcastic tone and already walked towards the tree to start the work.

"Golly, yes. Thanks, boss."
With no time to lose, Sayid decided to ignore the comments from the peanut gallery for now. As Sawyer moved on to the task he was assigned with, Sayid turned to Kate, placing the bottle rocket into her hands.
"Watch for my flare at five o'clock. Then it's your turn," Sayid instructed as he turned to look over at Sawyer who was uncoiling the wire. Sayid was nervous with entrusting Sawyer with a part of this mission, a mission that could not fail. He knew what guys like Sawyer were all about, always up to no good and always looking out for themselves. At that thought, Sayid hated to leave Kate all alone here with Sawyer. "I do not trust him."

Kate watched Sawyer walk away with the antenna, barely managing shaking her head. She was more worried he might damage the antenna, more on purpose out of spite than by accident.
Sayid's voice had her turning back to him.
"Watch for my flare at five o'clock. Then it's your turn,"
Kate nodded as she quickly glanced at her watch, making a mental note of how long they had.
"I do not trust him."
Sawyer's penchant for making everyone else's life difficult did have one positive effect; it seemed to be something everyone else could easily bond over and now that most people, including herself, had become accustomed to it, it felt as if his antics had gone from feeling hostile to a sense of an eye rolling 'what'd he do now'.
Kate gave a wry grin, shrugging off that obvious feeling everyone had toward Sawyer. "Who does?"

I grinned. "And that's all that matters," I reiterated.
"You seem to get what it's like to work with family, do you work with yours as well? Or what do you do for a living?"
"Well right now, I'm human resources and payroll for a bank security systems company--I know, stunningly boring and uninteresting," I said in dry amusement, "but from 13 to 18, I worked with my mom and my aunt at my aunt's salon as hostess. Basically bringing people drinks and snacks, sweeping and cleaning up... also stunningly boring and uninteresting," I said with a chuckle.
Through the trees ahead, I could hear talking and the sound of waves. "We made it back," I said with relief.

"Who does?"
"I don't trust him with you," Sayid said lowering his concerned tone of voice as he gestured his head towards Sawyer in this distance. He knew Kate was capable of taking care of herself, however he still felt incredibly uneasy with leaving her with him, knowing the types of games he liked to play.

Bennett listened to Heidi as he tightened the straps of the backpack on his shoulders. His gaze peered up towards the sky, noticing the thick of trees becoming thinner as they approached their destination. "Well hey, we gotta do what we gotta do to get by," He replied, quite relatedly, "And for the record, I definitely don't think you're boring. You seem like a really good person, Heidi. You deserve to give yourself more credit," Bennett made eye contact with her and smiled before their ears caught the sounds of waves in the nearby distance.
"We made it back,"
"In one piece, I may add!," Bennett chuckled as he watched her travel slightly ahead of him, eager to get to her friends. Keeping his eyes on her in the distance, he discreetly pulled out a small piece of paper and pencil and quickly jotted down "Heidi - California - Payroll" and quickly stuffed the items away into his pocket again before catching up to her.

"I don't trust him with you,"
Kate's features softened at Sayid's genuine concern. All snark aside, she said in a calm, reassuring tone, "I can handle him."
With a glance back, she saw that Sawyer was starting to climb one of the trees. "5 o'clock, watch for your flair, then it's our turn," she said, giving a quick rundown of the plan. "Be safe." With that, Kate jogged over to Sawyer.
Kate stood under the tree Sawyer was climbing, holding a hand over her eyes to block the glare of the sun as she watched him. She was about to call out and ask how he was holding up, like she would have done in polite conversational concern with any other normal person but this was not a normal person. She felt as if she had to measure everything she said to Sawyer and she hated that. Besides, he looked to be doing just fine.
Leaving him to his part of the job, she stepped away without a word to set up their flare. She eyed their surroundings to choose a good spot and good angle and as she knelt down to start setting it up, Kate felt glad she'd stopped herself from setting him up with a perfect shot to volley back at her.

"I can handle him."
Sayid had a peculiarly bad feeling in his gut about the situation he was leaving Kate in. He understood her assuring words and was aware of her confidence in handling Sawyer. However, Sayid did not feel reassured any more or less, but time was running short and he had no other choice. "Just be careful," he said, and with a nod, Sayid made his way back into the jungle to his destination.

Sawyer threw a brief look over his shoulder, watching Kate and Sayid talking, before Sayid lastly left to fulfill his own part of their job. The job Sawyer has invited himself to. Why he actually did again? Was it just to not fulfill that other job? The job of being the other's gofer? Sawyer ended his thoughts with a shake of his head, concentrated back on the climbing.
A little later Sawyer reached a good position for the antenna, maybe not at the highest as he could, but high enough to satisfy the boss. This anyway was just a waste of time, but who would listen to him.
While climbing down the tree, Sawyer had a look at Kate knelting on the ground to set up the flare. A serious look appeared on his face for a moment, before he continued the way and approached her with his usual presumptuous expression. "Well, I guess it's half-time. Any ideas how to kill the time." A lewd smile was playing around his lips.

Sayid's parting words and genuine concern replayed in her mind. He was a good man. A gentleman. That was a rare find these days. And then there are the polar opposite types, Kate thought wryly as she saw Sawyer approaching in the corner of her eyes.
"Well, I guess it's half-time. Any ideas how to kill the time."
Kate heard the implication in his voice and looked up long enough to answer his leer with a roll of her eyes. She turned her attention back to what she was doing as she spoke.
"I'm almost done setting up so feel free to go find yourself a nice wallow," she said in mock sweetness.

"I'm almost done setting up so feel free to go find yourself a nice wallow,"
The lewd smile vanished, and instead he got a little on the edge himself for just a moment. Man, Kate really had to gain control of her hormones. But if he spoke out that loud, she most certainly wouldn't even talk to him like he was a pig.
Wordless Sawyer turned away from her and placed himself on the ground, next to the tree he had climbed up. From there he watched Kate finishing the setting up, folding his hands behind his neck.

Kate watched him sulk away from the corner of her eye. She was surprised he hadn't stuck around and kept prodding her into annoyance. It seemed to be what drove him. Well, what did he expect, she wondered. He'd been mean to everyone, giving everyone a hard time. He'd been lewd and even handsy with her on the first day during the hike when he'd pulled her to him and made suggestions that he knew what kind of girl she was.
She gave a quick glance over at him. He sat there, casually observing as she did all the work. So the usual then. But there was a sadness to his eyes that gave her a twinge of guilt. Dammit. She had been abnormally harsh with him since he'd shown up but again, he'd gone above and beyond to push her to that state. Even still, she felt a slight disappointment in herself for acting that way.
As Kate finished setting up, she sighed and re-positioned herself to a seated position staying near her post. She pulled her backpack to her and rooted around inside, producing two bags of airline peanuts. Kate looked over to Sawyer, holding out the other bag as a peace offering.

From the corner of his eye Sawyer noticed the offered bag of airline peanuts Kate was holding out to him. What do you say, she had guilt feelings! Sawyer darted a smug glance at her from the side, before he reached for the peanuts. "Thank you."
Wordless he wrenched open the bag and let some peanuts fall into his hand. He never thought he'd be thankful for a bag of airline food. Sawyer put everything from his hand into his mouth at one go. The cracking sound of the last nut between his teeth attended his following words. "I think this is progress. You and me sharing nuts instead of driving it to each other." A smirk lay on his lips.

He gave her one of his smug looks again. She was proud of herself for not rolling her eyes.
"Thank you."
No snark? This strange revelation had her silent for a beat. "You're welcome," she said, carefully tearing the bag at the 'tear here' spot. Sawyer, on the other hand, tore it open like an animal. No surprise there. Thankfully, the whole bag didn't rip in half, sending peanuts everywhere. Seeing as these were her last two bags, that would have been a crying shame.
"I think this is progress. You and me sharing nuts instead of driving it to each other."
And there was the snark. Still, it was a friendly kind that had her smiling with amusement. "I can hardly take credit. You've been hogging the wheel of that bus," she said, shaking a couple peanuts out into her palm and chewing before adding, "I've just been one of the passengers." She gave him a pointed look, her added smirk of amusement making it obvious she was making light of past offenses in hopes of moving past them.
Kate shook another couple peanuts into her palm and popped them into her mouth, glancing at her watch again as she lowered her arm.

"I can hardly take credit. You've been hogging the wheel of that bus," Sawyer watched her chewing a couple peanuts, before she added: "I've just been one of the passengers." She added it with a smirk of amusement. She was looking quite cute with a smile on her face, Sawyer thought for a moment, before Kate turned her head away from him. Having a look at her watch. Again.
"Still ain't five, just like the last time you checked your watch.", he broke the silence once more, his head leaning back at the tree behind.

Kate was caught off guard at his observation. She hadn't realized she'd been checking her watch so often, but Sawyer had. "I just don't want to miss Sayid's signal," she explained, stuffing the empty peanut packet into her pocket. "Remember, I'll fire the flare, you set off the antenna."

"I just don't want to miss Sayid's signal,""Remember, I'll fire the flare, you set off the antenna."
And again there was this angularity of hers. Couldn't she just relax for only a moment? Sawyer turned his head back into her direction with a deep sigh. "I just thank the good lord I've got you here to keep reminding me." He couldn't help it but being sarcastic again.

Kate narrowed her eyes at him. "It's a dirty job, but somebody's got to do it," she said in mock seriousness. She just barely caught herself from looking at her watch again.
There were a few moments of silence and Kate found herself thinking about how things were going with Jack and the other people settling in at the caves.

Sawyer had to smile, when he watched Kate looking at her watch again. Now he was sure she wasn't able to relax for only a moment. But this time he left it at that.
Sawyer's gaze turned off from her, while they spent a few moments in silence. For some seconds he thought about what to say to her. Actually there were some sentences in his mind, and so he decided for the very first that had come up. And like almost everytime it wasn't the one his conversational partner was willing to hear. "So what is it about that guy? ... Jack." He made a short pause, before he continued with being all Sawyer-ish. "What it is about him makes you all weak in the loins?"
|
|

Post by Hollywood Heidi on Apr 24, 2017 19:23:07 GMT -8
"So what is it about that guy? ... Jack."
A hint of surprise flitted over her face as if she'd been caught red handed. Trying to brush off his question with some nonchalant answer would only make her seem more guilty and provide more bait for his heckling after giving herself away like that. It would also make it seem like she had a thing for Jack. She didn't even want to be considering that there might be anything beyond friendly commendatory. Those thoughts went in a rapid fire loop in her mind, leaving her unable to interject during the short pause before he spoke again.
"What it is about him makes you all weak in the loins?"
Kate glared at Sawyer with a frown of disapproval. At least his crude remark saved her from having to worm her way out of her situation.
"Do you try to be a pig, or does it just come naturally?" she asked with disdain.

Sawyer felt the metaphoric knife coming out of her eyes. Ouch!
"Do you try to be a pig, or does it just come naturally?"
So this time she wasn't just talking to him like he was a pic, but titled him as one. Another progress... though maybe in the wrong direction. But well, now that he had provoked it already... And so the next came out fluently.
"So, he's a doctor, right? Yeah, the ladies dig the doctors. Hell, give me a couple of band aids, a bottle of peroxide, I could run this Island too."

"So, he's a doctor, right?"
A smile touched Kate's lips as she looked at the bottle rocket which she was turning over in her hands. It wasn't the fact that Jack was a doctor, but the fact that he seemed to be a damned good one, always looking out for everyone even's best interest, medically or otherwise.
"Yeah, the ladies dig the doctors. Hell, give me a couple of band aids, a bottle of peroxide, I could run this Island too."
The bottle rocket paused in her hands and Kate scoffed, giving Sawyer an incredulous look. "You're actually comparing yourself to Jack?" she asked rhetorically in a patronizing tone.

Sawyer didn't notice the incredulous look of hers, as he was all busy looking pretty relaxed, leaning his head against his elbows folded behind him.
"You're actually comparing yourself to Jack?"
Another ouch! Sawyer sat up to a less arrogant position, even looking a little hurt. "The difference between us ain't that big, sweetheart.", he commented on that. This conversation actually had potential getting turned another time in a more positive direction, if he wouldn't have suddenly added the following. "I guarantee you, if he had survived a few more weeks on this Island you'd have figured that out."

Kate's breath stopped and her stomach dropped. "What did you just say?" she asked in quiet anger. If this was some sick joke... but if it wasn't... She felt anger. Fear. A pang of loss. So many emotions swirling. Kate waited for him to say something before her mind could decide on which emotion would trigger full force.

"What did you just say?"
Oops? What the hell, now it has been said. "Ah, damn. Didn't I tell you?", he replied, appearing to feel sorry for it, even though he not exactly did.
Ah, what the heck. She wouldn't believe him becoming emotional anyway. "Word from the valley is Saint Jack got himself buried in a cave-in." Over and out.

"Ah, damn. Didn't I tell you?"
She gave him a piercing look. He knew damn well he didn't and his 'gee golly' tone gave no impression that he was pretending otherwise.
"Word from the valley is Saint Jack got himself buried in a cave-in."
Kate shot to her feet. "What?" she asked, glaring down at him with a mixture of anger with a hint of disappointment, at him because she expected better of him and at herself for having that expectation. Every time she fell for him acting like a normal, decent person, he pulled off something worse. Her free hand fisted and she so badly wanted to punch the 'gee golly, my bad' look off his face. A part of her wondered if this was still a sick joke he was prolonging but the feeling in the pit of her stomach told her it wasn't.

"What?"
Yup, all weak in the loins about Captain Jack, just like he said. Somehow this thought made him inwardly rolling his eyes. And so Sawyer went on being all him.
"Look at the bright side, now you have someone else to pity.", he said, not even think about how much his words would hurt someone. Or maybe he just didn't care? He didn't waste any thought on it anyway.
