"Mia Lassiter, Nice to meet you. You can add the 'doctor' if you want to be formal but since I've been moving bodies around all day, might as well keep it casual."
"I think I'll stick with 'Mia'. It seems Dr Jack has taken the nickname 'Doc' and is on the verge of trademarking it," replied Severin. He followed Mia, moving with careful balance that stood in contrast to her spry climbing and searching. At the back of his mind was the urge to find his own medication, and he inwardly chastised himself for such a case of mild selfishness.
Severin had dealt with bodies before. Even now, as he moved past dark corpses locked into seats, he wasn't repulsed by them. He was used to the smell, the empty eyes, the limp stillness. He'd been responsible for creating bodies, at one time. Now, he didn't treat them with horror or even a sense of solemnity; he treated them more like crates of fragile cargo.
"Heads up, Darling!"
Severin's eyes widened and he quickly lifted his arms to catch the bags. He caught the first two, dropping a third that rolled downward. He stuck his foot out and stopped it. Speaking of fragile cargo...
He slung the two bags over each of his shoulders, and lifted the smaller third bag. He quickly checked, finding a single capsule of pills. Reading the label, he smiled and felt like a prudish grandmother. "Viagra. I feel like there are a hundred off-color jokes to make here, but none of them are leaping out at me. I should be ashamed of myself; an entire culture built around Carry On films and I can't think of a single double entendre off the bat."

"Hmm, I don't think Jack will need those. But feel free to pocket them if you want; I won't tell," she said with a grin. She retrieved a few more bags from the next overhead bin, setting aside laptop bags and children's backpacks which seemed futile to search. "Nice," she enthused over a leather burgundy purse. "Genuine Kate Spade ... and genuine amoxicillin," she added when her perusal of the purse's contents turned up an amber-colored cylinder.
She gathered up a few of the bags and moved back outside into the sunlight for a more thorough search. "Y'know, my boss was supposed to be the one on this plane," she confided. "But his wife gave him this huge guilt trip about missing his son's soccer playoffs, so I won the trip to Australia. Not feeling much like a winner, though."

He laughed, tossing the pills aside. "Well, good to know who I can trust." He emptied the rest of the bag, and placed the medicine they found inside.
"Y'know, my boss was supposed to be the one on this plane, But his wife gave him this huge guilt trip about missing his son's soccer playoffs, so I won the trip to Australia. Not feeling much like a winner, though."
Severin nodded. "I can imagine. Well, not that I have to..." he said. "I know it's cold comfort, but you did survive. That's winning...in the cruelest and most minor way possible."

"I guess, Mr. Brightside," she remarked. Her search wasn't turning up many antibiotics but she did set aside the medications for pain, headache, heartburn, and various other ailments in case they were needed later.
"I mean, it was an interesting conference, don't get me wrong. Decomp is the same in the desert of the Outback as it is in Arizona, but it doesn't mean we can't get a positive ID. Did you know that even mummified hands can be rehydrated enough to pull a print?" She looked at him with an enthusiastic grin that soon faltered. "I am sorry, that was so not appropriate small talk. So...football or cricket?"

Severin paused for a moment, opening and closing his mouth like a fish that didn't know how to respond. "Well, now I know, and knowing is half the battle, isn't it?"
"I am sorry, that was so not appropriate small talk. So...football or cricket?"
He chuckled, placing more bottles and packets of medication in his commandeered carrier bag. "It's quite alright. Much better topic of conversation than the weather, anyway," he said. "And neither. I could never keep up with cricket and the only time I ever scored in football was when a bee was chasing me."
Severin gave an over-dramatic sigh. "I am terrible at being British. I ought to have stayed in Australia and learned to inject apostrophes in the middle of words that don't require them."

"Heh. Did they send you to Oz to keep an eye on the uppity Colonials?" she inquired. "File a report on them, and then move on to us bloody Yanks?"

Severin laughed. "Yes, that's precisely it. As far as we're concerned, the fall of the British Empire never happened, it's just a very, very long secret war," he replied. "We're hoping to end it with a bare-fist-fight between our Queen and your President Bush. Or perhaps they could use bicycle chains as weapons."

"I wouldn't count out the Queen. She's got that glint in her eye, and an army of Corgi's," Mia observed.
"Thank you, again, for your help. I'm kinda' glad Jack gave me something to do instead of sitting around. When I get restless, my brain starts thinking up all these worst-case scenarios. Not that I need to, with that thing in the jungle..." She glanced back over at her shoulder at the currently non-moving trees. "The people that found the radio -- did they say if they saw anything out there?"

"I'm happy to help. Not happy to be in this situation, but happy to help," he said. Severin matched her glance toward the trees, and then looked back. "I don't know, I...I haven't heard anything. They all came back alive, so that's...." He saw her look. "Sorry. In situations like this I'm about as comforting as a fire extinguisher filled with oil."

"No, that's okay. I deal with DA's and homicide detectives all day; it's not exactly a warm and fuzzy work environment," she said. "But you're right. A day when no one dies, is a good day." She added a bottle of oxacillin to their existing cache of antibiotics. "And with the accent, everything you say sounds very wise and profound."

Severin laughed again. "I'll keep that in mind. Have the accent on-hand to dole out advice," he said. He was on the verge of asking if she'd found any his olanzapine, but it was more than likely she knew what that medication was for. There was no need to worry her. "Well, hooray for nobody dying?"

"Yes, hooray for that," she agreed, "and hopefully no more petty fights. Men are such testosterone-fueled asshats sometimes. Present company excepted, of course. So should we start forming alliances? Make sure we don't get voted off at the next Tribal Council?"

"Call me a cynic, but I think the petty fights are just in the preliminary rounds," he said, leaning his back against an upright, solid piece of the plane and lifting his foot to tie the laces on his new shoes. "I admit I'm having some flashbacks to reading Lord of the Flies in school. If we cut off the head of a pig, can we agree not to worship it?"

"Psh, are you kidding? That thing would be toast. Or bacon, I guess. Or a round of ham sandwiches," she mused, looking out at the waves with a slight pout. "Maybe I shouldn't have mentioned food...."

"Perhaps not. There's probably some fruit, though, in the jungle? Or perhaps animals?" he suggested, and then dismissed the idea. "Although I doubt many people want to go into the jungle right now." FLASHBACK

"Yeah, I think there are plenty of threats to our health and safety right here," she agreed. "Besides, I'm not good with trees. Been living in the desert too long. This sandy beach is just fine with me." She added a bottle of amoxicillin pills to the cache and moved on to the next bag.

*Jinx enters from F3 - Jungle Outskirts of Survivor's Camp - Day 2*
Jasmine walked silently and found a quiet place to be by herself, not wanting to attract attention or be asked a million and one questions. What she could really use right now was a drink, a big old bottle of something to dull the senses. She still had that bottle of Wine stashed away, would now be the best time to open it? No, she'd wait until things were settled down a bit. Everyone was bustling around and working, she didn't want to be the drunk pop diva doing nothing.

"I think that's about all the searching we can do until tomorrow," Mia said. "I'll go ahead and take these to Jack. Thanks again, Darling; see you 'round the campfire." She tossed the bag of medications over her shoulder and headed for the last place she'd seen the doctor.

A few hours pass and it is now evening.
Fairly clear night sky with thousands of stars.
Several bonfires are lit throughout camp.

After Sayid's speech, Mia decided to continue her chore from yesterday, searching for electronics this time instead of antibiotics. Though she would set those aside for the doctor as well since his star patient didn't seem to be doing any better this morning. Someone had to check the bodies for cell phones, PDAs or whatever that would be in their pockets, and she figured it might as well be her.
Thanking the vendors at the Australian conference for the freebies, she slipped on a pair of latex gloves and a mask, and pulled her hair back into a ponytail. She went methodically from one body to the next, trying to be as respectful as possible while rifling through a stranger's pockets.

I walked closer to the fuselage but stopped a distance from the bodies that had been gathered near it. Being this close to so much death was surreal and I knew the images would be etched into my mind for the rest of my life. I swallowed hard and averted my eyes.
"Mia?" I called out. "Could I talk to you for a sec?"

"Mia? Could I talk to you for a sec?"
It took a moment for Mia to register that someone was talking to her. She looked up to see the curly-haired girl from the night before and waved in recognition. Walking over to the girl who seemed happy to stay at a distance from the bodies, she slid the mask down from over her mouth since it would slightly hinder conversation. "Hey. Heidi, right?" she began. "Everything okay? That guy Hank didn't take a turn for the worse, did he?"

"Hey. Heidi, right?"
I nodded.
"Everything okay? That guy Hank didn't take a turn for the worse, did he?"
"Oh no. He's fine." I paused. "I think. I mean, I haven't seen him today yet." I was distracted trying to think of how one would go about asking what I came to ask her.
"The guy I was sitting next to on the plane-- his body is still in the jungle. Animals have been getting to him," I said with a cringe, my stomach turning slightly. "I told his fiance I'd find a couple people to help bury him. I could do most of the digging but," I looked down, feeling ashamed even though I knew a majority of people had the same problem, "I don't think I could get myself to get near the body, let alone help carry him." I managed to suppress a shudder at the thought of touching a dead body. I looked back up at her. "If you can't for any reason, that's okay," I reassured. "I just thought, since you seemed comfortable..." I gave a weak gesture toward the bodies.

"Oh, it's fine. I deal with this stuff everyday," she replied, trying to put the girl at ease. "Well, I mean, not this exact stuff. This is a little...out of the ordinary. But yeah, I'll be happy to help. Let me grab a couple able bodies to help with your unable one."
Mia shielded her eyes to look across the landscape, then turned back to Heidi with a finger held up in hesitation. "That came out slightly insensitive. What I meant is, we'll take care of it," she revised.

I gave a nervous laugh. I wasn't offended or appalled. I knew that disconnecting yourself was the only way anybody would be able to do what Mia did.
"Thank you. I owe you. Big time," I said, flooded with relief. Not only was she going to help but she was also taking on the difficult task of finding another person or two to help. Well, difficult to me. "I'll look around the wreckage. See if I can find shovel-like pieces. Is there anything else I can do?"

"No, I think that'll be enough of a task. Give me a few minutes and I'll meet you back at the treeline," she offered. Inwardly, she thought, Now, who can I charm into venturing into the scary jungle to help me bury a body?

"Sounds good."
I walked over to the pile of wreckage, giving myself a wide berth around the bodies, and shuffled through the pieces of twisted metal. Since this and the digging was the only help I was providing and it was a paltry contribution in my mind compared to handling a dead body, I was determined to find the best damned 'shovels' in this pile.
I pulled my hair back in a ponytail as I surveyed the pile then quickly made a separate pile of shovel-like pieces. Then I began sorting through those. End not curved enough, I thought as I tossed one back to the main pile. I nicked my finger on the next one and flinched. 'Handle' too sharp, I thought as I kicked that piece aside. Finally picking out the three best, I collected them in my arms and made my way to the treeline.

Severin hadn't slept. It was always a problem for him, what with the dreams, but he'd learned to get by without much sleep anyway. And he didn't feel tired. He felt...alive, awake, active. He'd spent the night on the cool sand of the beach, listening to the waves and lying on his back as the stars glowed above him, little pinpricks in a blanket of dark. It had been nice. It had been a long time since he'd seen the stars.
He'd spent the earliest part of the morning continuing to look through discarded baggage, sometimes lifting smaller pieces of wreckage and keeping them piled together. Severin had also started watching his step, after almost slicing his foot open on a sand-buried piece of shrapnel.
Sayid's speech was to-the-point, but Severin was uncertain exactly how to help. He decided to contribute to building shelters, as he'd already began piling useful pieces.

Mia looked around for a while until she finally spotted a familiar face. At least he already knew her propensity for morbid babbling and didn't seem to have a weak stomach. "Morning, Darling," she began with a bright smile. "Look, I know it's really early in the morning to be asking for a favor, and this favor's not for me. Well, not just for me. And if you have better things to do, it's fine but...you feel like burying a body?" she blurted, then bit her lip nervously.
