Note: Day 65 has been changed a little, as this is also RPG canon.
Jasmine had been counting the days since she arrived on the island with everyone else; sixty-four days. Tomorrow she would normally be woken up by the smell of turkey cooking, noisy family members, and Christmas music come early. Thanksgiving, a day of family, food, and giving thanks for what you are grateful for but not this year. This year she was stranded on an island with no way off. Some would say they all had little to be thankful for this holiday season. Jasmine didn’t see it like that, she was still breathing and that was something to be grateful for. She wanted to share that with her friends- her family here on the island.
The start of the next day didn’t go well and everyone’s emotions were running a bit high. Jasmine decided not to spend the afternoon on the beach and headed down to the hatch. When she arrived she could hear the clock counting down, which meant someone would be typing in the code. As she rounded the corner she saw, Eko, the alarm quickly silenced. “Hello,” He looked surprised to see her there, Jasmine made it know she had no interest in pressing a button several times and day.
“I didn’t expect to see you down here.”
“Well, I decided I wanted to be useful. I mean It can’t hurt to help every once in awhile,” Jasmine smiled.
“I’m pleased to hear that,” Jasmine stood and listened to him giving the instructions, luckily she had watched the video when it was first found- but Eko had a surprise for her.
“You mean there was more video?” She was sat down and Eko started the reel, she hated it still but at least the blanks were filled in.
A lot of things had been going on and Jasmine felt like she owed it to everyone to be better. She had been little help since they all crashed here, she hadn’t given anyone a reason to take her seriously.
“Eko, I want to do something special for everyone today. I know this morning we didn’t have the best start, and I think everyone deserves a little distraction.”
“What did you have in mind?”
“We’ve been on this island for sixty-five days now, today is Thanksgiving. I know some people think of it as a shame holiday but for those of us who celebrate it, it’s kind of a time for family. So, I was kind of hoping to raid the pantry and make a small something for everyone? Nothing huge but a little something to lift spirits?”
“Not many will feel like celebrating today, Jasmine.” With the death of Ana-Lucia the night before and Libby just hours ago, nobody was thinking about food.
“I just want to show them how grateful I am.”
“I will not stop you if you wish to do this.”
“Thanks, Eko.”
“I will leave you but I will be back, do not forget about the button.” When Eko left, Jasmine found herself going through the pantry and seeing what kind of things she could make. She was a simple girl and she didn’t really cook much for herself. After she became famous she did a lot of ordering out. She looked and didn’t see anything for Thanksgiving but she did see something she could manage. She found a couple boxes of cake mix and decided a small cake would work. She would have offered to make a small meal that night but she wouldn’t dare attempt it.
As she looked around for some ingredients she was startled, “Jasmine?” She turned to see Gwen standing in the doorway, looking confused. “What on earth are you doing down here?”
“Button duty.” Jasmine smiled proudly.
“You?” Gwen looked surprised and Jasmine couldn’t blame her. “What are you really doing down here?”
“I’m serious, I’m helping with the button today. I figured today was a good day to start helping more, I’m not saying I want to go running around the jungle but I can do this.”
“I must say I’m very surprised but also very proud.” Gwen cracked a smile, “We’re having the funeral for Ana and Libby tonight, you will be there?” Jasmine nodded, “Good, but I do have one more questions for you?”
“What?”
“What are you doing with that cake mix?”
“Well today might be a sad day but it’s also a special day for us Yanks.” Gwen’s brow raised, “a day of thanks.” Gwen chuckled.
“So, cake?”
“Not like I can go to the store and grab a turkey. Even if I could I would probably burn it. I tried to cook something a few years ago and it came out so wrong, I had to toss the whole meal and order Chinese. So, what are you doing down here?”
“It was my turn to press the button but I’m glad to get the day off. Anyways, I’ll be off. Looking forward to trying some cake.”
“Sorry, Colonists only.” Jasmine teased.
“Ha ha, try not to burn down the hatch,” Gwen called out.
“Hey!” Jasmine spent the next hour preparing the cake, most of everything was powdered. Not like she could get fresh eggs or anything but she made it work. Jasmine continued to press the button until her replacement came, Mr. Eko. It was time to head to the funeral on the beach. “You’re not coming?”
“No, I will stay here.” Jasmine decided to leave the cake for now and made her way back to the beach area. They all said their goodbyes and it ended with a bunch of the usual suspects preparing for some justice. Jasmine said one final goodbye to Ana-Lucia and Libby before heading to her shelter.
By the morning, Jack, Kate, Hurley, Sawyer, and Michael left for The Others Camp. Leaving everyone behind to wait for their return. That afternoon she headed back to the hatch to get the cake, glad that no one found it and dug in. She carried it back through the jungle, chanting; don’t drop it, don’t trip as she went. She reached the beach she headed over to the small area where they gathered for meals. “Ta-da!” she exclaimed loudly.
“Is that a chocolate cake?” Heidi came up from behind, little Sarah skipping along beside.
“Cake!” Sarah bounced up and down, arms and fists shaking. Soon the rest of the beach started to gather around. “I miss cake!”
“I wanted to do something special yesterday but with everything that happened- well this just seemed like the better day to do it. We’ve been on this island for sixty-six days now and yesterday was actually Thanksgiving. Fresh out of turkey, so I made this,” Jasmine smiled and nodded her head, “I hope it’s good, mostly because I had to work with ingredients from the hatch. Powdered eggs, it’s just not the same.”
“It’s the thought that counts, Jasmine,” Rose and Bernard came up to the table and smiled, “We’ve all been so caught up with so many things, I guess it was easy for us to lose track of the date.”
“Let’s dig in,” Bernard smiled.
Jasmine divided the cake into small parts, handing a piece to each person. “I thought the cake was yanks only?” Gwen teased.
“Well, Sarah already dug in so I guess it’s not fair to keep you from a piece,” Jasmine smirked and held out a piece for Gwen.
“Sarah, what’s the verdict?” Gwen asked suspiciously but mostly she was teasing.
“It’s good!” Sarah spoke through a mouthful of cake.
“Don’t talk with your mouth full,” Heidi chided.
“Very well, I shall partake in your holiday.” Gwen accepted the cake and place a hand on Jasmine’s shoulder, “In seriousness, Jasmine, thank you for the cake.”
“Anytime, Gwen.” Jasmine took a bite of her cake and was surprised at how it tasted. “Not too bad but I think it’s just because it’s been so long since we had cake.” Everyone shared a laugh as they finished their piece. “We need to find cocoa beans on this island, I need my chocolate fix at least five days a month.” Jasmine heard a couple amens from various women. “I’m glad I could give everyone a bit of happiness today.”
“You always make me happy,” Sarah place her empty plate on the table. “You always sing pretty and make me laugh.”
“Well, Ms. Sarah, I’m glad my singing makes you happy. That is why I started out singing in the first place, to make people happy and feel good- on or off the dance floor. I’ve changed a lot since we landed on this island, a lot of us have. I know I’m not always the easiest person to get along with but everyone has given me chance after chance. I told Gwen I want to start helping more. I want to show you all how grateful I am, that I have more than what I've been showing you.”
“Honey, you don’t have to make us a cake to show us that.” Rose shook her head, “You’ve been doing a lot lately and that is enough.”
“And don’t talk down about yourself, we all take turns around here. We gather, clean, and help when needed. I’ve asked you to do things and you’ve been a great help. We can’t all run off into the jungle when danger happens and that’s okay.” Heidi placed a hand on Jasmine’s shoulder, “Days when I wanted to pull my hair out, you’ve taken Sarah for me and rescued me from the demon spawn.”
“That’s rude,” Sarah pouted.
Jasmine grinned and wrapped her arm around Sarah, pulling her close. “I worked so hard to put up walls and pretend to be someone I wasn’t, for fans, for popularity. I lost myself in that life and rarely anyone saw the real me, I rarely saw the real me. You guys have become a family and I guess this cake is a way for me to say thanks.”
“You too,” Vivian place her plate down, “I’m glad we found other survivors on this island, it was hard on the other side of the island- being hunted.”
“Nightmare fuel,” Ray agreed, “but we are certainly all family, Jinxy.”
“Let’s say grateful things!” Sarah moved to the center of the circle, “I’m grateful for all the friends I’ve made on the island! And for cake!”
“Showers, I’m grateful for showers. I don’t know about everyone else but I did not like washing in the ocean.” Alisha remarked.
“I’m grateful for everyone here, food, and yes showers in the hatch,” Heidi smirked.
“I’m grateful to be with my wife again,” Bernard hugged Rose close.
“I’m grateful for my husband and god for blessing us with life,” Rose added.
“I’m grateful for friendship,” Linda smiled, “and second chances with family.”
“I’m grateful for the good company.” Sebastian nodded.
“Not being alone,” Lillian-Rose smirked.
“I don’t normally do this kind of thing but for the occasion, I’m grateful for cake, everyone here, and my sanity which is holding on with a sheer force of will.” Gwen collected empty plates and put them in a bin for washing.
“I think we can all relate to that sanity thing.” Ray nodded, “I’m grateful for you too, Gwen.” He smiled.
“Thank you, Ray, I’m glad you’re here.” Gwen nodded in his direction.
“Isn’t this lovely,” Stu came over and grabbed a piece of cake, “I’m grateful for not being grateful,” He winked at Jasmine, “but cake is good.” Stu walked off, leaving them to their feelings. “laters.”
“Thanks for your input, Stewie.” Jasmine called out to him, “I wish more of us could be here for this, guess all we can do is wait. Happy Thanksgiving, everyone.”
“Happy Thanksgiving,” they said in unison.
The end.
