Note: This was written for a prompt over on roleplayer.me for a group.
Ephiny grew up around death, it was forever present in her life. Under the rule of Queen Lucina, a feud between Amazons and Centaurs had already begun and she was dealing with betrayal from the man village close by. War broke out, people died and at such a young age Ephiny knew what it meant to die for something. Ephiny would watch as the warriors would march off to protect and come home battered, bruised, limping, some were even carried. None of these deaths hit her as hard as the death of Queen Lucina, the first death she experienced that truly struck her hard.
For years the men never fought back because when a beautiful woman comes to you for sex, you don’t say no. The men finally revolted and tried to plead for mercy, finally sick of being used and discarded like trash. The men lost the battle and were again forced to obey but they refused still. They joined with the Centaurs and this led into a decade-old battle. It was always about land, freedom, it wasn’t easy for either side. Many were killed on both sides and finally, Queen Lucina was slain; Ephiny was only eight at the time.
This left her oldest daughter as the new Queen, Melosa was only sixteen. As Melosa dealt with her mother's death, Ephiny tried to deal with it in her own way. The mourning period had lasted longer than most, Ephiny’s mother was forced to intervene and convince Melosa it was time to send her mother to soar. Ephiny’s mother was Lucina’s closest confidant, she became a second mother to many young warriors. She helped Melosa and Terreis get through this hard time. Ephiny spied during their exchange; listening to her mother speak words of comfort. “It’s time, you must let her go. She would not want this for you, the pyre is ready. This is not goodbye,”
“We’ll see each other again, you’re right. Thank you, Fara, I’m sorry for being so weak.” Ephiny had never seen Melosa so vulnerable before, she was supposed to be strong- how could she be strong if her Queen could not be?
“Emotion is not weakness, so long as you don’t let it rule your judgment. You will find a balance, your sisters will help you.”
“I have waited well beyond the mourning period, I let it rule me. We will allow her spirit to soar and then we will get our revenge on those responsible.”
Ephiny stood with her mother during the ceremony, everyone mourned the loss. Stricken with grief and anger. Melosa had this fire behind her eyes, Ephiny remembered how everything changed that day. Ephiny could not help but cry as she clung to her mother, it wasn’t fair, death wasn’t fair.
“Don't be sad my chariot, Queen Lucina would not want you to be. You will see her again and all our sisters when we pass through the gate of eternity. You are strong and destined for great things.” That day, Ephiny swore her allegiance to her Queen and Princess and promised she would grow into a great warrior.
