Kate found herself folding her hands and resting her chin on top of them as she looked down, drawn in like she usually was in the rare moments they opened up about their past.
"Farm life isn't for everyone," she started defensively on his behalf. "Early hours," she confirmed, "and a lot of hard labor." She spoke of it with a familiarity that hinted at personal experience from her past.
"You think this will hold us over?"
It was difficult to make out the contents of the bag from her perch. This tree was picked over anyway. Rather than scootching backward and climbing back down, Kate made for a quicker dismount.
"Head's up," she said once more. In quick succession, Kate wrapped her arms and legs around the trunk, leaned to the side and let gravity pull her to hanging upside down, then released her legs, taking a second to hold on with her arms while she gaged the several feet to the ground before finally letting go, carefully landing with knees bent. The impact was a little more than she was expecting, causing her arms to shoot out in front of her to balance herself and if Jack hadn't reflexively grabbed one of her arms with his free hand, she might have embarrassingly fallen back onto her tush. "Thanks. I'm a little out of practice," she said on chuckle at her own expense fueled by the adrenaline of that feeling of having almost fallen. Kate glanced into the backpack as she wiped her hands on her jeans, taking a step closer for a better look into the dark interior. "We could fit a bit more in there. Might as well fill it up while we're at it."
Kate glanced up to Jack for his response, momentarily caught up in those warm, brown eyes that were unexpectedly closer than she realized. She quickly took a step back out of his personal space, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear in an unnerved fidget as she slowly started walking again in the direction of the caves. "If we find more along the way," she said, glancing over at him with a grin and casual shrug that belied the unease slowly waning under the surface.
No need to go out of their way for more, especially not when things were starting to steer toward complicated waters with them to a point where it'd be better if they were around other people. That window of time from friendly, fun company to complicated seemed to be getting shorter and shorter.
