"Yes, ma'am. We'll get right on that," I said dutifully, looking to Bennett as Sarah had with the same encouragement before making our way to the end of the lane.
"Bossy little miss, isn't she?" I asked Bennett rhetorically, amused at how she sometimes sounded very adult. Kneeling down, I righted the knocked over cans and handed Bennett the bucket of water, then held the first empty can steady while he poured.
Without a spout, it was difficult to make the water go directly where you were wanting it to go, so like usual, a lot of the ocean water sloshed over the top of the can and onto the holder's hands. I chuckled at seeing the familiar semi-frustrated concentration Sarah and I both had the first time we'd taken a turn at filling the cans now reflected on Bennett's face as he was taking his first turn at it. "You're supposed to pour the water into the can," I teased in a way that showed I was familiar with this unavoidable issue, then made more light of it by playfully flicking my hand to send a couple drops of the water at him before holding down the next can.

"Bossy little miss, isn't she?"
"She's definitely beyond her years, that's for sure. Could probably run the whole camp if she wanted," Bennett joked as he followed Heidi's lead. With the bucket in hand, he knelt down towards the ocean and gathered the water into the bucket. Though, when he went to pour the water it didn't seem to want to travel into the can and just kept washing over it. He grew rather perplexed, peering up at Heidi in his defeat.
"You're supposed to pour the water into the can,"
Heidi sent a playfully light splash of water in Bennett's direction. He shed a light hearted grin of half amusement, half apologetic as he readied himself for the next can, "Don't think I've quite got the hang of this whole survivor thing yet," Bennett commented sheepishly as he tipped the bucket and trickled the water down into the can carefully.

Sarah patiently waited, humming a tiny song as they refilled the cans. She tossed the coconut into the air and caught it as she waited, giggling. Though she might have spoken like an adult at times, she was still a child. She enjoyed the play, being silly, and learning new things every day- sometimes quickly but other times frustratingly slow.
"We ready?"

"Don't think I've quite got the hang of this whole survivor thing yet,"
I chuckled and tried to ease whatever it was in him that had felt he needed to be apologetic in the least. "Don't worry, this totally doesn't speak to anyone's survivor skills. It's impossible to get water to poor right out of this thing," I said, taking the makeshift bucket from him and placing it out of the way of the 'pins'. "Not even Sarah can do it," I said in a jokingly serious conspiratorial whisper.
Eyeballing the cans, I adjusted a couple, then stood up to get a better overview.
"We ready?"
"Yup, good to go!" Shuffling back a couple steps so that I wouldn't be a distraction to Sarah on the other end of the lane, I watched from the side, also at the ready to try to grab the coconut if it decided to take a wayward turn toward the ocean. The faint sound of someone singing was carried over on the breeze and I subconsciously hummed along to 'A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes' while most of my attention was on Sarah's bowling turn.

"Yup, good to go!"
Bennett nodded, "Show us your best!" He cheered from the sidelines, taking his place beside Heidi as all eyes were now on Sarah as she was about to take her turn. His head turned slightly at the sound of singing coming from up the beach and landed on the team that looked like they were hard at work with a little bit of entertainment to go with the task they had at hand. Things seemed rather calm and quiet right now, leaving Bennett with thoughts of what could possibly be brewing from behind the scenes other than the schemes of his and Ethan's own. The calm before the storm. There was always something with these people.

Sarah's expression turned very serious as she held the coconut up, staring hard at the pins from above the coconut just like the pros on TV. Amused, I grinned as I watched her swing back and let it go.
The coconut was veering to the right at first, but then curved back toward the center. "Oh, Ohhh," I said encouragingly, watching and leaning, waving my hands as if willing the coconut to center itself perfectly and sure enough, as it reached the pins, it was perfectly aligned and the force of it just strong enough to cause a slow domino effect that knocked down all ten pins.
"Woo! Strike!" I shouted excitedly, clapping as I jogged to Sarah and held out a hand for a high five. She giggled as she delivered the high five, but then her eyes were drawn to something behind me and she started to look uncomfortable. I glanced back, seeing that we'd caught the attention of a few other survivors who were curiously wandering closer.
I'd gotten caught up in the moment and had forgotten where we were and how quiet the camp usually was and with not much going on, anything that could pass the time was intriguing. I looked back at Sarah and said a quiet, "Sorry," with a slight cringe.
"It's okay," she tried to reassure despite still looking a bit uncomfortable as she headed to help refill and reset the pins.
A few others had joined to watch by the time we finished resetting and Sarah's discomfort around people won out. "I'm gonna built a sandcastle."
"Oh, okay." Wanting to keep playing, I hesitated a moment before asking, "Did you want me to help?"
Sarah picked up on my hesitation and shook her head. "No. You play," she said, putting the coconut bowling ball into my hands.
I watched her skip off to the shore near me, seemingly content to be on her own for a little. As an introvert, I understood where she was coming from, but we'd been around these people for 15 days and by this point, I'd probably exchanged a few words with everyone. While I was still a little uncomfortable around the ones I'd hardly spoken much to, just having been around them this long definitely eased the discomfort. "And I thought my introversion was bad," I joked, trying to lighten the situation.
Walking back to the throw line, I did my best to look over at the spectators and give a friendly grin. They were keeping at a distance that gave the feeling of observing rather than an interest quite yet in participating, or maybe they didn't want to intrude and were waiting to be offered the chance? I could feel a little awkwardness creeping up on me. If there'd been at least one person amongst the small crowd that I knew a bit better, I probably would have worked up the courage to offer. But as there weren't, it would take me a little time to work up the courage to be the first to say something.
'Maybe after this turn,' I thought. Being the point of attention was yet another very uncomfortable thing for me, and I felt it now as I got ready to take my turn. I tried to turn off the awareness of my surroundings and simply block out anything but the lane and Bennett waiting at the end.
Swinging the coconut back, I took a step forward and let it roll toward the pins, watching it intently with all my focus in my attempt to continue blocking the discomfort of the other people out. The coconut hit just off center to the right, knocking down half the pins. I heard encouraging clapping from the spectators, which made me smile and helped ease my tension as I waited for Bennett to return the coconut for my second throw.

As Sarah had left to build a sandcastle, Heidi and Bennett were the only ones left in the game. There had been a few people that had gathered nearby to watch the turns but Bennett didn't pay too much attention to them. Ready for her next turn with the coconut in hand, Heidi mustered the right amount of strength and control she had been seeking to allow the coconut to sail through half of the pins.
"Nice one," Bennett complimented as he jogged over to retrieve the coconut, "You have a great spirit for competitive fun, I must say. Did you play often at home?" Bennett asked Heidi as he placed to coconut back into her hands, readying her for her next turn.

"Thanks," I said with an appreciative smile, turning it momentarily to the clapping spectators before looking back at Bennett and took the offered coconut. "I used to, for a little while."
I gave the short answer for now, lining up my shot and concentrating on the pins, aiming just to the left of center to try to knock over the left half of the pins still standing.
Going into concentration mode, I stared at the spot that I wanted the coconut to go, then took a step forward, swung back, and sent the coconut rolling down the sand lane with a bit more force in hopes it would cause a domino effect in case my shot didn't hit the spot I'd been aiming for.
The coconut hit its mark and toppled the rest of the cans. "Yes!" I shouted amongst the clapping and cheering of the spectators, throwing my hands in the air before bowing with a flourish. Common interests really helped ease discomfort. Everyone that had gathered seemed to share an interest, whether it be actual bowling or just anything to pass the days that have become increasingly boring.
"Hey, can I give it a try?"
I looked to one of the spectators that had finally stepped forward and spoken up. Scott. Or Steve. I wasn't sure as I hadn't talked to either that much and everyone else's mix-up of the two when speaking of them left me uncertain as to which was which. "Yah, sure! Give us a few minutes to reset. It's not as quick and efficient as the real thing," I said with a friendly grin.
"Sure, no problem," he said, grinning back and looking patient. It wasn't as if any of us had anywhere else to be.
As I walked to the other end of the lane to work with Bennett to reset, I elaborated my answer to his question. "We used to play a lot, end of high school and a little after graduating. We got really into Cosmic Bowling." At his questioning look, which I'd expected as I wasn't sure if it was called something else in other places or if other places even had it, I explained. "Fun nighttime event with a cover charge for the whole evening where they turn on blacklights and break out the neon bowling balls and pins. They play really great 90s music with the music videos playing on the screens."
Pouring water in the can Bennett held in place and half-concentrating on the impossible task of trying to slosh as little of it as possible onto his hands, a nostalgic smile touched my lips as I thought back to those fun nights. "It's been years since we went. I kinda miss it." Shifting to another can, I kept my eyes on the task and continued pouring whilst conversing. "So, have you really never bowled much? Not a popular past time in Canada?" I inquired curiously, harkening back to his earlier inquiry as to the rules. I wasn't sure if he'd been totally joking or partially serious but maybe embarrassed to admit it, so I'd kept my tone extra casual.

"Fun nighttime event with a cover charge for the whole evening where they turn on blacklights and break out the neon bowling balls and pins. They play really great 90s music with the music videos playing on the screens."
"Interesting," Bennett nodded through his onset of confusion as Heidi explained to him what exactly she was referring to. Never had he heard of the term, nor the ongoing of such an event. It intrigued him, as he wondered more and more what the outside world was truly like as he got to know the survivors. There were of course ways off of the island, though it was forbidden for any of them to leave with the exception of a few who left solely due to business. Bennett figured if he ever had the chance to leave, he might never come back. He loved his dad, though he felt like the odd one out ever since he could remember. Sometimes he even wondered if he was destined to remain on the island or if there was another future out there for him.
"So, have you really never bowled much? Not a popular past time in Canada?"
Bennett smiled as he peered downwards at the can, "Not really," He spoke through his concentration, "Hockey is a big thing where I'm from, though I've never been much of a sports kind of guy. My dad and I would sometimes throw a football around though for fun. I do miss him," Bennett thought he would throw out some openness to make his case sound believable. And in a way, it was true. Ben had refused any sort of visit between Bennett and his father the last time he returned. Sure, his dad was a busy man but he always made time for Bennett. His trust in Ben was dwindling, and he only hoped that his father was okay.

I glanced down, concentrating deeply on my task to dispel the sudden choked-up feeling at the reminder of all the people I was unable to see or communicate with for so long now. Composed enough to speak evenly, I finally responded. "Yah, I miss everyone back home. Especially my mom." The sting at the back of my eyes had me concentrating on a topic change. "Lemme know if you're ever traveling down to SoCal. I'll arrange a Cosmic Bowling session; introduce you to some of my friends. They're all really nice. Seriously, some of the best people you'll ever meet," I reassured confidently in case he was like me and uncomfortable around strangers.
My attempt at topic change had just brought up the people I missed at home again and I could feel that stinging sensation returning behind my eyes. It'd been too long that I'd been bottling the feelings, thinking I'd be seeing everyone again by tomorrow. But two weeks of tomorrows had come and gone and the grim reality that we might not be getting back home at all suddenly hit me hard.
Unfortunately, out in the open with people around. Hating for anyone to see my cry allowed me to hold it back a few minutes longer as I made an excuse to step away, avoiding eye contact in hopes it wouldn't be noticed because a simple 'are you alright' could break the dam. "Could you give that to him?" I asked, handing the coconut to Bennett to give to the new player. "I'm gonna grab some water for myself and Sarah. I'll be right back."
Not waiting for an answer, I turned quickly, keeping my head down as I took long, fast strides toward my shelter.

"Could you give that to him?" "I'm gonna grab some water for myself and Sarah. I'll be right back."
"Uh, yeah sure," Bennett grew slightly puzzled at Heidi's sudden change in demeanor as he received the coconut from her. Quick as a wink, she was off to her tent. He wondered if it was something that he said to cause her sudden, temporary exit. Often Bennett forgot that these people are the ones really going through a lot of trauma. He felt a slight pang of remorse knowing he caused Heidi grief, but only for a moment before he shook it off. The thought of actually starting to care for these people terrified him slightly.
"Bennett."
Suddenly, a familiar voice entered the beach and Bennett turned to see Ethan approaching.
"Hey cousin, have you come to indulge in some bowling?" Bennett teased Ethan who wasn't the least bit impressed. If anything, stark concern covered his features that began to make Bennett feel uneasy.
"Let's go for a walk. We need to talk." Ethan's tone was cut and dry, wasting no time as he started to head down the beach ahead of Bennett towards a more secluded, private side of the ocean.
Bennett sighed, wondering what possibly could have gone wrong now. "He's definitely not popular at parties," Bennett looked over at the newcomer with a grin as he handed him the coconut. Thankfully a few others had grown interested in playing as well, so Bennett didn't feel so bad leaving him alone for a moment. He hoped that Heidi would be able to take the time she needed to clear her mind and compose herself to play some more later.
Bennett took off down the beach towards Ethan who was already way ahead of him. Picking up his feet as swiftly as he could without seeming suspicious, it took Bennett a moment or two to fully catch up to Ethan. With everyone in the far distance now looking like tiny ants, they were far enough away from the survivors to be able to talk.
"Bennett, we have a problem."
"Look, Ethan. I know it looked like I was slacking on the job, but it was all in the name of the list, okay?" Bennett started, assuming Ethan had taken him away to give him more trouble.
"Remember that "thing" I had to take care of a while back? Sawyer and Gwen found it...or, him."
Bennett started shaking. How could Ethan have been so careless? He fumed with anger but masked it with fright as he stammered through his words, "W-what?! How could this have happened?! You said he was out of sight and mind, that they would never know!"
"Yeah well, I'm guessing an animal or something must have dragged him out of the water...Bennett. Bennett! Look at me!" Ethan threw his hands on Bennett's shoulders in frustration of his co-pilot having an external meltdown. Bennett ceased his darting gaze and tried to slow his breath as much as possible as he stared Ethan straight in the eyes to hear his instruction, "We have to stay calm. I'm sure there will be some questions, and God knows the Doc will be trying his hardest to get to the bottom of it. It might make getting the samples from Claire a bit more difficult as I'm sure everyone will be sleeping with one eye open. But we have to stay focused and play the game, just for a little longer. And if things go bad, we execute Operation Claire immediately on my word. Understood?"
Bennett wordlessly nodded his head, understanding the assignment. He had to keep their secrets, just for a little longer like Ethan said. For some reason, Bennett felt the pressure now more than before, especially with this new development. But who would suspect them? They were just two friendly cousins from Canada. Bennett managed to calm himself and collect his thoughts rationally before the two of them headed back towards the crowd playing coconut bowling. Be cool, and stay calm. You got this, Bennett thought to himself over and over.

Kate was busy unpacking and sorting the backpack of fruit she'd collected. Knowing she'd have to travel in further since the nearby trees had been picked clean, she'd been up long before everyone else, wanting to restock so people wouldn't panic at the dwindling food supply when they started to wander over for breakfast soon after awaking.
Their situation was difficult enough and she knew that panic would eventually be inevitable for a variety of circumstances that could come their way, food only being one of them. The conversation of possibly moving camp way further down the beach might need to happen in the near future. While she didn't mind a bit of a trip to pick fruit--it gave her something to do and a bit of time to herself--it'd eventually become too lengthy to be feasible.

Derek was actually making good progress with translating the book Heidi and the others had handed him the day before. Translate it, however, was only half of the work. He had to make sense of it, understand its origin, connect the dots, and put together pieces like that with what he already knew. And what he knew probably was much more than everyone else here would think.
While he continued on the connecting part in his mind, Derek sat on the beach, watching the waves as they moved back and forth. In this state of mind, he would notice nothing around him, not even somebody standing nearby while they took care of their own tasks.

"Ugh, finally! I'm starving!" proclaimed an approaching Arzt.
Kate frowned at him and the way he made it as if he was accusing her of 'being late' for a task she was voluntarily doing and that took longer now because of having to travel deeper to find it. His attention was on the shelf of fruit so he was oblivious to the fact she was irked. "You're welcome to pick your own--" she started to say, but broke off as he started messily tossing pieces around to try to find the one that looked the nicest. "Hey, I just finished sorting all that!"
"Yah, thanks, gold star for you," he said over his shoulder as he rushed away with one of the newly picked mangos, slight sarcasm in his voice as if he'd been addressing one of his students.
"Jerk," Kate muttered under her breath. She eyed one of the mangos, contemplating throwing one at the back of Arzt's head. Instead, she took a calming breath and tried to organize them back into fruit type and the few leftover older picked ones more toward the front so they'd be grabbed and eaten first.
Task done, Kate grabbed one of the older mangos for herself and started to head towards the beach. She passed by someone seated in the sand, her daydream of pummeling Arzt with mangos interrupted when she noticed it was the new guy.
Kate hesitated a moment, seeing how obliviously absorbed he was in a book, but something pulled at her to see how he was settling in.
"Careful Sawyer doesn't see you with that, or it'll end up in his library," she joked with a friendly grin in place for when he pulled his eyes away to see who had addressed him.

"Careful Sawyer doesn't see you with that, or it'll end up in his library,"
Derek didn't exactly startle at the sudden voice behind him, but surely let out a quiet sound of surprise. Not like someone who'd been caught red-handed, but like someone who hadn't expected to get company.
When he turned his head and saw a slight grin on Kate's face - they hadn't talked much yet but Derek was great with names -, the former professor had to smirk as well. "Sawyer, huh? Like Tom Sawyer in the stories? Clever nickname or actually a coincidence?" he asked in a rather joking manner while closing the book in his hands. He would remember the page. He always had without needing something like bookmarks.

Seeing as she got the kind of reply that seemed a welcome to a bit of conversation, Kate settled herself onto the sand beside him. "You know, now that you mention it, he does kinda live up to his namesake," she joked back. Nobody but she and James knew that his name wasn't actually Sawyer, and she felt it wasn't her place to say, so she continued to go along with the name when it wasn't just the two of them.
Kate reached behind her for the knife in the holster attached to her belt. "How are you settling in?" she asked, cutting a slice and holding it toward him in offer.

"... So I'll check in with Heidi about the wound on her leg, and see how Sullivan is doing with the hives," Gwen recited, mentally mapping out her rounds among the survivors. "And eventually get 'round to Sawyer with fresh bandages and a dose of antibiotics." As they both emerged from the treeline, she noticed Kate talking with Derek. Which reminded her of the sensitive subject they still hadn't discussed, since Claire's distress was top of mind.
"Given that Kate and Sawyer already know about poor Sebastian, what should I tell anyone who asks after him?" she inquired of Jack. "I'll say whatever you think is best. I just want to make sure we're on the same page."

Derek was indeed welcoming the conversation. If he had meant to nobody intervene with his studies, he would have remained in his tent probably. Besides, he was actually a very social guy whenever he could allow socializing to distract him from studying that was. Derek smiled slightly at her when she took a seat in the sand beside him.
"You know, now that you mention it, he does kinda live up to his namesake,"
"I bet so," he uttered with a smirk, imagining Sawyer's attitude from just the little time he had seen him around. Derek had a good knowledge of human nature, though.
"How are you settling in?"
"To the place or the people? I love lost places but prefer to sleep in a bed and with real walls around me when it comes to, uh, long-term stays," he stated with visible humor while receiving the offered slice with a "Thank you".

"... So I'll check in with Heidi about the wound on her leg, and see how Sullivan is doing with the hives," "And eventually get 'round to Sawyer with fresh bandages and a dose of antibiotics."
Jack's ears kept busy listening to Gwen rattle off her to-do list as they emerged from the edge of the jungle and onto the beach. The tone of the camp felt rather light-hearted, as if it was simply just another day in the neighborhood. Though, little did the rest of the survivors know what had happened recently - including one of their very own turning up dead. His heart sank at the thought of making everyone anxious and worry again. And then his gaze caught Kate as she was chatting in the distance with newcomer Derek which was also a strange mystery.
"Given that Kate and Sawyer already know about poor Sebastian, what should I tell anyone who asks after him?" "I'll say whatever you think is best. I just want to make sure we're on the same page."
Jack's frozen gaze thawed out as he began to move his head to look back at Gwen with a glance that tried to mask his pangs of worry, "No one's asked about him for days, so I'm not sure much will come up about it," No one except for you, Jack thought inwardly as he tried to shed some words of comfort in hopes that Gwen wouldn't be put on the spot. The fact that she had been the only one to ask about him spoke a lot about how much she paid attention to everyone - and how much she cared, "But if they do - tell them we'll hopefully have some news soon." Jack said, not entirely sounding convinced himself. He still needed to figure out how he was supposed to bring the news up to everyone. For now, all he could do was offer the survivors a shred of hope to hold onto. It might be false hope, but for now they needed to focus on survival until they had a plan.

"No one's asked about him for days, so I'm not sure much will come up about it. But if they do - tell them we'll hopefully have some news soon."
Gwen nodded in agreement. Though she wasn't keen to keep a secret, it was probably for the best to avoid upsetting anyone further. So she would have to be discreet in her planned effort to retrieve Sebastian's things from where he'd left them at the beach. She could just say that he'd moved to the caves. Before separating from Jack, she noticed Kate sitting and talking with Derek. Given the concern that she'd shown for the pregnant girl the day before, Gwen figured she'd want to know about her current situation. “You should tell Kate about what happened with Claire," she suggested to him. "They seem rather close; I think she'd want to help if she can. I'll see you in a bit.” With a polite smile in departure, she headed off further up the beach.

“You should tell Kate about what happened with Claire," "They seem rather close; I think she'd want to help if she can. I'll see you in a bit.”
Jack noticed Gwen's look of concern, and it only took a few mere seconds after the end of her sentence for him to nod in agreement before she departed from the conversation. He peered back over at Kate and Derek conversing in small talk that was more audible to Jack's ears as he trekked closer and closer through the sand towards them.
"... I love lost places but prefer to sleep in a bed and with real walls around me when it comes to, uh, long-term stays," "Thank you".
"Well this place ain't no Four Seasons, I'll agree to that," Jack interjected himself, meeting Derek's humor with a bit of his own as he looked between Derek and Kate, "So what've I missed, anything much?" Jack asked the two people before him, yet it was more of a question for Kate considering she knew everyone on the beach camp more than Derek at this point.

"To the place or the people?
Kate pretended to consider for a second. "Mm, both," she said around a grin of amusement.
I love lost places but prefer to sleep in a bed and with real walls around me when it comes to, uh, long-term stays," "Thank you".
Kate nodded her 'your welcome' as she chewed on a slice of mango herself, wanting to ask 'and the people?' but a familiar voice joined the conversation before she could swallow.
"Well this place ain't no Four Seasons, I'll agree to that," "So what've I missed, anything much?"
Kate grinned a 'good morning' welcome up at Jack. Having grown accustomed to their daily one-on-one catch-ups, she was about to mention the nearby trees being picked clean, but wanting to avoid any cause for panic to anyone, especially their newest member who'd probably been through enough on his own as it was, she decided to wait until she and Jack had a moment alone. "Surprisingly, not much. I was just checking in on our resident Indiana Jones," she said, gesturing toward Derek and sending him an amused grin.

Derek looked up as someone intervened in their conversation, recognizing the leader of this group immediately. He had a good memory when it came to people, and even more so, places, probably thanks to his job.
"Well this place ain't no Four Seasons, I'll agree to that,""So what've I missed, anything much?"
"Surprisingly, not much. I was just checking in on our resident Indiana Jones,"
Derek replied her grin of amusement with one of his own. "Guess I'm not as cool as an Indiana Jones, although surely have gone through one or two adventures myself," he said truthfully and with a chuckle following his words. Then Derek tucked the book in his hands away while leaving the main conversation to the two of them for the time being. He guessed that Jack was going to hear what he might have missed from Kate rather than him anyway.

"Guess I'm not as cool as an Indiana Jones, although surely have gone through one or two adventures myself,"
Jack watched as the newcomer was quick to exclude himself out of the conversation. Perhaps he had grown burnt out of the interactions he had to have repeatedly being a sparkling spectacle to the group and all, Jack figured. He did not question Derek's intentions as he decided to keep to himself, looking over at Kate, "Look at this tree over here," His voice suggested for Kate to follow a few steps away from where they remained, and yet everything about him commanded her as he stepped forward into the sand before them, expecting Kate to follow.
"Kate...Claire thinks someone is out to harm her, and her baby," Jack started as they began to walk, the hot sun beating down on them as sweat began to pour from Jack's forehead unsure if it was the sweltering heat or the nerves he was experiencing, "She's been under so much stress since she's been here, so I want to think it is some form of psychosis leading up to her labor, but it all feels so real for her. I don't want to discredit her feelings, but out here it's just us. Who in their right mind would want to harm a mother and her child? And with what motive?" Jack pressed onward, seeking advice from the only unbiased source he knew.

"Look at this tree over here,"
Kate blinked as Jack moved several paces away after making his command. She knew him well and clearly, something was wrong, but she did not give that away to Derek, instead making a light joke over how obvious it was that Jack wanted a private word with her. "Subtlety is not Jack's strong suit," she said apologetically with an amused grin. "To be continued." She got to her feet and joining Jack to 'go check out the tree'.
"Kate...Claire thinks someone is out to harm her, and her baby,"
The thought of teasing Jack over his unsubtly immediately disintegrated. They came to a stop near the tree line and Kate turned to face him, expression serious as she listened intently to the details.
"She's been under so much stress since she's been here, so I want to think it is some form of psychosis leading up to her labor, but it all feels so real for her. I don't want to discredit her feelings, but out here it's just us. Who in their right mind would want to harm a mother and her child? And with what motive?"
Unable to soothingly wrap Claire in her arms at the moment, she instead hugged herself as she glanced blindly at the trees and took a moment to consider. Kate shook her head, looking back up at Jack. "I can't think of any. Claire's not a threat to anyone. I'm guessing you examined her? Did you find any evidence of anything?"

Derek could tell when one wanted to discuss something with another in private, or rather, without the newcomer overhearing. That was fine with him, of course. He just hoped the newcomer wasn't the subject of the private talk. But even if that was the case, he would have to accept.
Derek just smirked slightly at Kate's comment to ease the situation before waving her a silent goodbye.
At first, he continued busying himself with Heidi's book, but then he couldn't help allowing his eyes to wander over towards the pairing that had left to 'check out that tree over there'. The subject of their private talk seemed much more serious than he had expected, so he turned his attention away from them after just a few seconds. They should have their privacy. Derek wasn't able to hear anything anyway. Also, he didn't want himself to appear suspicious because he watched them.

"I can't think of any. Claire's not a threat to anyone. I'm guessing you examined her? Did you find any evidence of anything?"
Jack shook his head as he forced his palm into a tree, as if he was looking for support to keep upright, "Nothing out of the usual of possible night terrors. She really did a number on her palms, her fingernails really dug in deep," Jack shared minor details as he heaved a sigh, his gaze pointing out into the distance. The sun beating down on the waves that gracefully crashed into the sandy shore - this visual would appear calming to most. But with everything going on within his head, it was the least amount of easing for Jack, "Claire shouldn't be here," He lead on, "We all shouldn't be. But by some sort of force, we are. But she's suffering. She needs a distraction, but my hands are so busy that I can't provide such a thing." Jack's pleading glance faced Kate in his despair, seeking a resolution.
