He was joking. He had to be. But no, he stood there and despite his smirk, looked completely serious. Kate stilled, completely taken off guard. A sort of deer trapped in headlights expression flitted across her face. What was he doing? This wasn't how they played their game. There were unspoken rules, weren't there? He wasn't following them. Or he'd started a new game.
"What?" she finally managed.

And except for the smirk, Sawyer still remained serious. Oh, c'mon, Freckles, for sure you've imagined kissing these lips before, he thought with his unhealthy amount of self-confidence. He had. And not only once.
"A kiss, from you, right now?", Sawyer elaborated on his preceding suggestion, as he watched her doe-like face.

She'd given him a chance to backtrack, play off his request as a joke, as she'd assumed he would, but he persisted. He'd always flirted with her. Made suggestive comments. But they'd always been in a joking matter, or so she'd assumed. A way for him to throw her off kilter so he could win whatever battle they happened to be fighting at that moment. That seemed to be his weapon of choice.
A part of her was instinctually making her want to laugh off his request and walk away. Run. Kate stood her ground, ignoring the slight twinge of butterflies at what he was requesting and the way he was looking at her. It irked her that after all he'd said and done to her, a part of her was still drawn to him.
Kate rerouted the game back to their normal path. "I don't buy it," she said, pausing to give him a moment to absorb the change in direction. She continued, using her weapon of choice; digging deeper, into the psychological aspects and picking at potential emotional scars. "The act. You try too hard, Sawyer. I ask you to help a woman who can't breath and you want me to kiss you?" She shook her head, looking disgusted at the thought. "Nobody's that disgusting." Kate gave him a once over with a knowing look. "I've seen you, you know."

Sawyer would have lied if he said he wasn't having fun with this. Kate was still looking at him like a trapped doe. Also, Sawyer swore that he read something like deliberation on her features; though maybe just something he wanted to, or even something his unhealthy amount of self-confidence actually made him see. But for sure there was some kind of sexual tension between them. Even Kate wouldn't be able to deny. Sawyer was quite good at reading people, even though he might not be at communicating. But the silent watcher was the savant.
"I don't buy it,", she eventually spoke up again.
"Buy what?", he asked truly confused about the sudden change of topic; at least he assumed this was a change of topic.
"The act. You try too hard, Sawyer. I ask you to help a woman who can't breathe and you want me to kiss you?" Oh, just marvelous. Someone seriously needed to pull out the sticks up in these people's asses. "Nobody's that disgusting." Well, bad news for you, Freckles, he answered in mind. Looks like I am.
"I've seen you, you know."
And with that statement even the last remains of his joking manner vanished, so did the smug smile on his face all of a sudden. "Seen me what?"

Kate had managed to wipe the smug smile off Sawyer's face. She felt the thrill of winning a small victory go through her and her chin went up a notch as the smug look found its way over to her face.
"With that piece of paper -- the one you keep in your pocket." Kate nodded in the direction of said pocket, her eyes also briefly pointing the direction before she looked back at him. "Seen the expression on your face when you read it and how carefully you fold it up." She gave a meaningful pause. The smugness was replaced by a genuine, serious look of concern, even a hint of sorrow on his behalf. For the most part, what she was showing on the surface was genuine but there was a small part within that was using this as a tactical move. "It means something to you. So you can play games all you want, but I know there's a human being in there somewhere." She paused another beat to let her heartfelt words sink in. "Give me the medication."

Sawyer stood motionless and remained silent for the whole time of Kate talking to him, the only vital sign being the grinding of his teeth behind his cheeks. It seemed for the first time it got really personal between them; actually between anyone else and him. Well, in fact, it got personal several times before but never for his part. Anyhow, Kate knew absolutely nothing about him.
"You think you understand me?", Sawyer eventually spoke up again. There was suddenly something in his voice that was far away from the smug tone it usually contained.
He gave Kate only some seconds to answer, an answer that had been quite predictable anyway before he silenced her all of a sudden. "Shut up. You want to know what kind of human being I am?" Sawyer's body started to move again, as his hands reached out to the aforesaid pocket of his jeans and produced the object of their sudden issue. "Read it. Out loud.", he prompted her in a rather harsh tone without actually raising his voice though, handing her out the letter.

"You think you understand me?"
His features became hard, angry lines which gave her momentary pause. Kate attempted to tread on carefully. "Yeah. I think I have..."
"Shut up.
The harshness with which he spoke those two words completely annihilated her offense leaving her speechlessly on the defense.
"You want to know what kind of human being I am?" "Read it. Out loud."
She'd watched in stunned silence as he'd closed the distance and held the letter out to her. The force with which he made the command, she didn't dare refuse it. Not that she would have if he'd spoken it any differently. She'd observed him with this letter and had been dying to know how this little piece of paper could have such power over someone so indomitable.
Kate took the letter and carefully unfolded it as she'd seen him do many times. She read, her voice quiet. "'Dear Mr. Sawyer, you don't know who I am but I know who you are and I know what you done. You had sex with my mother and then you stole my dad's money all away. So he got angry and he killed my mother and then he killed himself, too.'" The impact of the words written by the young child had caused her voice to become shaky and she'd come to a stop, suddenly regretting learning the contents of it.
There was a sudden silence. Her eyes lost focus of the words as she stared blankly at the paper. Had she been completely wrong about Sawyer? What this child wrote, it was far worse than anything she'd ever imagined about the man radiating such intensity and anger in front of her.

Sawyer wordless watched her reading out the letter. He wouldn't make her stop, not even for clarification. For some reason, he didn't feel the need to clarify anything anyway. If these people wanted to believe he was what they were already feeling certain about, hell yeah, then he could play along. Deep inside even Sawyer might not know why he was doing this; a sudden protest against every tiny hint that he might not be that disgusting or simply some kind of crude game?
When Kate paused, and that at a part the letter certainly wasn't saying the end, he broke in the sudden silence and commanded her to continue. "Don't stop now. You're just getting to the good part." He let out a sarcastic hiss, only inwardly that was though, as he waited for Kate to read on.

She'd only taken a moment to look up, his expression having her cast her eyes down to the letter again. Hesitantly, she continued. "'All I know is your name. But one of these days I'm going to find you and I'm going to give you this letter so you'll remember what you done to me.'" She read the last line quietly, looking just off to the side of the paper before finishing. "'You killed my parents, Mr. Sawyer.'"
Kate couldn't get herself to look up at him again. She kept her head bowed and her eyes downcast, the feeling of gut wrenching sorrow for the kid who'd written this. The man being damned in this letter hadn't cared what his actions would do to those he took advantage of. It had spiraled into dark, painful consequences of a young boy being orphaned at the hands of his own father. The fact that he continued to con and take for himself despite it gave Kate an utter loss for whatever chance of redemption she'd thought she'd sensed within Sawyer.

"... You killed my parents, Mr. Sawyer."
And yet again was the only movement on Sawyer's features the grinding behind his cheeks, as he stood close to Kate. His expression remained harsh but yet kind of unreadable, inwardly though he felt anger rising in him when he heard those lines getting read out loud; Because from the two of them he was the one who was aware of what they really meant.
And then he saw this look on Kate's face; actually exactly the look he had practically asked for by letting her reading out the letter without any background information. In some way, maybe a fact that was yet lurking beneath the surface, this look hurt. But this was what he had wanted, wasn't it?
"Now about that kiss...", Sawyer eventually broke the awkward silence between them, standing very close to her and his voice a little quieter than before, yet not less harsh sounding. And when Kate wasn't reacting at all, instead didn't make any move and even completely averted her gaze down to the ground, Sawyer took the letter out of her hands: "I didn't think so."
Then he slowly turned away from her, leaving her still standing like frozen. Well done, Sawyer, well done...

The rest of Day 13 and all of Day 14
pass by fairly uneventfully. It is now:
Day 15 - Mid-Day

Post by Hollywood Heidi on Nov 14, 2021 16:58:21 GMT -8
Another day, another time to sit and think about what the heck else we could do to pass the time. The news of Linda and Hurley building a golf course got me thinking more creatively. I wasn't a fan of golf, but I did like miniature golf. That kind of building was far more advanced than I was capable of and we probably didn't even have the tools here to do it. What other fun activities could be built with the random items we had around us?
An idea finally hit me a couple hours into the day and when I ran it by Sarah, she excitedly agreed that it was a great idea. Water bottles would have been ideal, but seeing as they were vital, I'd looked around for another solution. My eyes caught the pile of discarded, empty cans. I fished through, pulling the taller ones that had had energy drinks or tea. Thankfully, I was able to find ten of them that hadn't been crushed or too damaged.
Next, I'd pilfered an item from the food racks, but one that was more regularly found in the jungle. Picking the smallest one, Sarah and I headed for the lesser populated camp so that we wouldn't be in anybody's way. The ground was flatter there, so added bonus.
Placing the items aside, Sarah and I had taken palm fronds to smooth out a long, rectangular area of sand as best we could. We angled it toward the water. I figured the small decline would balance out the hinderance of a sand lane and help the ball--or coconut--work its way down better and further. Next, I drew the two lines of the lane, then the throwing line with a stick.
Cans filled with ocean water, I'd placed them at the declining end of the lane nearer the water in a triangle and now stood with Sarah at the throw line, both of us hands on hips, eying our handywork. "Wanna go first?" I asked, turning to her. Of course, her answer had been 'yes'.
It was tedious work, having to refill the cans every now and again (another reason lidded water bottles would have been more ideal), but we were having fun. Sarah was getting ready to take another turn. "Now remember, ease up on how hard you're throwing the coconut. I almost had to wade into the water for it last time!" I reminded. Sarah snickered at the memory of me letting out a curse as I took off after the coconut careening toward the waves.
Holding the coconut up as if it were an actual bowling ball, Sarah playacted out a professional throw until she got to the line, then dropped it to her hands and did the ol' swinging back and forth through the legs, little kid throw style.
The coconut went careening even faster than the last time, angling away from the cans leaving nothing to stop its momentum and I leapt to action. "Shit, shit, shit," I kept repeating as I ran after it.
I was concentrating too hard on catching it before it got lost in the water and dragged out by a wave that I didn't catch Sarah in a fit of giggles until I'd gotten almost knee-deep in the water. With a look of surprise on my face, I turned to gape at her and had to hold back my own laugh as I tried to pin her with a stern look. "You did that on purpose!" I chastised. My back to the waves, I didn't realize one was coming at me until it practically on me. I tried to turn to my side and jump along with it, but I was too late. It splashed up and soaked an entire side of me.
Sarah was now clutching her stomach and leaning over from laughing so hard and I was not able to stop myself from letting chuckles out when I called out a threat as I came slogging out. "Oh, you're so gonna get it!" I dropped the coconut near the throw line then went for her. She was laughing too hard to make much of an effort to run, so it was easy for me to pin her in a hug, along my soaking wet side, of course.

Bennett wondered how many more times he'd have to deliver Claire's samples back to home base before him and Ethan would carry out the remainder of the mission. Ethan spared him of any details as of late, and Bennett was angry that the trust Ethan once had for him had dwindled down to almost nothing. Bennett started to think that Ethan wasn't to blame. After all, Bennett felt as if he was running out of chances after the outbursts and episodes that almost cost them the entire operation. If anything, Ben could have kept him locked up and Ethan could have carried out the rest of the plan himself. Though, it would have looked mildly suspicious. He knew he was in it for the long haul now. Ethan had been missing in action today, though Bennett knew he had been stressed out about Claire's traumatic outburst this morning and was most likely keeping a distant, watchful eye as Charlie and Jack would take care of her for the time being. After tonight's sample draw, Bennett would be off again to assume his delivery boy role, with samples and new intel for the boss on the survivors. There was one in particular besides the few he had on his list. Derek, the newcomer. Bennett wanted to question him not only for Ben's sake, but for his as well. Ben would have already ordered their men to have carried out the operation on the tailgate survivors by now, and this Derek was one of them. He wanted to be aware of what exactly he would be walking into when he arrived back home. Wandering down the strip of the beach, sand shuffled around his feet as he walked by tents and survivors trying to occupy themselves. No sign of Derek yet. But a peculiar sight caught Bennett's eye. Raising a hand just above his brow, Bennett squinted through the blinding glimmers bouncing off of the ocean waves to bring Heidi and little Sarah into view, chasing each other and splashing around in the edge of the shoreline. Bennett walked towards them, the sounds of pure joy emulating from their giggles almost made him smile.
"What's up with the coconuts?" Slowing his stroll down, Bennett asked curiously as Heidi and Sarah noticed his arrival.

Sarah and I had had a couple of successful turns, but then on my next turn, the coconut bowling ball came in contact with a rock we hadn't seen under the soft sand of the lane. It sent the coconut unexpectantly veering off the lane and past the soda can pins. Both Sarah and I went running after it as it picked up speed and headed for the shore.
I was once again repeating my curse as before and started busting up laughing when I heard Sarah saying it along with me. Rescuing the coconut from the waves, I finally stopped laughing enough to say, "Don't make that a habit. If you ever say it around your family, tell them you learned it from some guy named Sawyer." We were both giggling again when a visitor's voice signaled his approach.
"What's up with the coconuts?"
"Oh, hey, Bennett. We were playing beach bowling," I gestured away from the water to the makeshift lane. "I didn't wanna take more than one from the food stash, so we have to run after it when it veers off course."
Sarah snatched the coconut from my hand with a 'My turn!' and went running back up the beach to the front of the lane. "Oh! Find that rock or whatever it was that sent it off the lane!" I called after her before turning back to Bennett. "Wanna join us? We could take turns bowling, resetting the course, and being spotters to avoid, well, this," I said, holding my arms out while looking down at my wet clothes. I made it sound as if he'd be doing us a favor in order to encourage him to join and not feel as if he was intruding; a tactic that was plainly evident to the person receiving the invitation.

"Oh, hey, Bennett. We were playing beach bowling," "Wanna join us? We could take turns bowling, resetting the course, and being spotters to avoid, well, this,"
Bennett's neutral gaze shifted from the makeshift bowling lane Heidi guided his eyes to, and back to the two girls who were standing half soaked in the shoreline. Though, the sun was so hot these days, that they were already drying just from standing in one place. "Hmm, I dunno, my schedule is pretty tight these days. Lemme check to see if I'm free...," Bennett exaggerated a playfully hesitant expression. He secretly flipped one palm upwards and peered down over his side as he checked his fake schedule momentarily. Bennett didn't leave Heidi hanging for too long before confirming that he had no where else better to be, "Yep! I'm free. Sarah, you wanna show me how to reset the course?" Bennett asked the young, timid girl. He tried to speak as friendly as possible, as he knew that she hadn't taken well to him quite yet. He had hoped she would soon, time was ticking and Ben needed to know about her. Perhaps he would tickle Heidi's brain about the young one. Hesitantly gravitating towards Heidi's side, Sarah gave a rapid nod of her head before running over to the course to reset the game.
"Poor Sarah. She's seemed to have taken this whole situation pretty hard. I definitely don't blame her. A young kid like her, in a strange place away from her parents. Good thing she's had you to take care of her," Shedding a bit of concern for the young girl, Bennett matched Heidi's stroll as they walked up to meet Sarah at the bowling lane, "She really seems to enjoy spending time with you." Bennett remarked kindly as they walked through the sand.

"Hmm, I dunno, my schedule is pretty tight these days. Lemme check to see if I'm free...,"
I grinned in amusement as he pretended to check his schedule and played along. "I mean, if you need a minute to make some calls, move some things around..."
"Yep! I'm free. Sarah, you wanna show me how to reset the course?"
I looked down to Sarah who'd found her way to my side again, showing me the rock she's removed from the course that had disrupted my last throw. She eyed Bennett for a bit before finally nodding and running to the end of the lane where the cans were set up in a diamond, save for the one that had gotten knocked over by the runaway coconut.
Sarah grabbed the bucket kept near the pins and peered in. "We need more water." And she was off with the bucket toward the shore once again, leaving the grown-ups with a chance to chat about how she was holding up.
"Poor Sarah. She's seemed to have taken this whole situation pretty hard. I definitely don't blame her. A young kid like her, in a strange place away from her parents. Good thing she's had you to take care of her,"
"Oh, she's been handling this whole thing better than I have," I said with a dismissive wave. I glanced at Sarah wading in up to her ankles to fill the bucket. "She's mostly been taking care of herself, even makes sure I'm okay." I grinned, looking back at Bennett. "She's kinda like a little adult."
"She really seems to enjoy spending time with you."
"Yah," I said with slight surprise. "It always baffles me when kids are drawn to me. I don't really know how to talk to them and I'm not big on the whole babying thing." Bucket full, Sarah was starting on her way back to us. "I mostly treat them like adults." I shrugged, giving the only explanation I could ever come up with for that. "I guess maybe they appreciate that?"
Sarah jogged passed us and knelt down, righting the can and holding it still, but trying to pour a full bucket with one hand while holding the can still in the other wasn't working out so well. Most of it was ending up on the sand. I knelt down. "Lemme help. You hold the can and I'll refill it, yah?" She nodded, holding the can with both hands.
I glanced up momentarily at Bennett and explained what we were doing. "This would be a lot less time consuming if we had bottles with caps, but those are needed for drinking water, so I had to improvise." Can full and positioned correctly, I got back to my feet and brushed the sand from my damp jeans. "But it's no big deal. Not like we don't have plenty of time! Sarah, we've already had a couple turns. How 'bout we let Bennett go next?" She nodded, picking up the coconut and handing it to me to hand to Bennett rather than handing it straight to him. Knowing she was always uncomfortable around other people, I gave a suggestion that would put more space between her and our new guest, figuring it would put her more at ease until, or even if, she started to warm up to Bennett. "You wanna be the spotter?" She silently nodded again.
I started back up to the front of the lane, handing the coconut to Bennett as I addressed Sarah's lack of vocal responses and even the whole coconut-handing thing. "Don't take it personally. She hardly talks to anyone. She seems to have the trust issues of most adults as well," I joked, trying to make light of the situation in hopes that Bennett wasn't taking it too personally.

"But it's no big deal. Not like we don't have plenty of time! Sarah, we've already had a couple turns. How 'bout we let Bennett go next?"
The coconut got passed down the the line to Bennett. He was aware that his presence was making Sarah mildly uncomfortable, so he simply gave her a silent nod of appreciation. He didn't entirely know how to be around kids either. Heidi made similar claims, and yet she was so wonderful with Sarah. She treated the young one like a human, and not a baby. Kids spend so much of their childhood being cooed over and scolded that it's refreshing when an adult comes by that hands out equal respect. Bennett knew it was sort of late in the game to develop much of a friendship with the young girl, yet he hoped his alliance with Heidi would help him get closer to her in the long term. For now, he would just observe and listen.
Sarah ran to find her place as spotter, and Heidi began to back up to the front of the makeshift lane. Standing still in the hot sand, Bennett peered down at the coconut perched between his two palms and back up at Heidi as she addressed him.
"Don't take it personally. She hardly talks to anyone. She seems to have the trust issues of most adults as well,"
"Totally understand," Bennett assured Heidi of his well being before making eye contact with the cans set up in a diamond shape, waiting to be pummeled with a big ol' coconut. Fully wrapping his entire right hand around the coconut, Bennett swung his hand behind him and in a single swing released the coconut. He watched it roll along the pretend lane, heading straight for the cans. Suddenly, the coconut began to roll slower and slower until it stopped right in front of the front lining can. "I guess I'm out of practice," Bennett chuckled, "How many turns do we get per round? Three?" Bennett inquired to Heidi. He had never seen bowling done in person, let alone ever been to an actual bowling alley. Yet, he always had books and movies growing up and had an idea of how it was done.

Sarah wasn't sure what to make of Bennett, but Heidi seemed to trust him. He was a quiet guy and awkward- like her. She would try and give him a chance, but for now, she would keep Heidi as her personal buffer between them.
Sarah stood and got ready to catch the coconut, but it never came. It did this slow roll and stopped just before the 'pins'. Sarah raised her eyebrow before making her way over and rolling it back to Bennett. She gestured with her hands for him to try again and mimicked a harder throw.
"How many turns do we get per round? Three?" Sarah blinked; how did he not know the rules of bowling? She knew the rules of bowling... she walked over to him and cleared her throat.
"Basic rules are as follows, pay close attention. It's two turns a frame, but on the tenth frame, you can have three. Ten frames a game which is ten turns. But you have to knock down all the pins within the first two rounds of that frame. You must release the ball from behind the foul line," She made sure to point to the line in the sand. "you can not cross it, and normally we have rules about gutters, but we don't have those here. These lines act as gutters; you get zero points if the ball crosses them. You can not alter the ball in any way, and the maximum score is three hundred points." Sarah looked to Heidi with a big grin, "If this takes off, we should get uniforms!"

I watched Sarah with a big grin, both amused and impressed as she explained bowling in great detail and in a very serious manner, then chuckled at her last notion.
I was of the same mind as Sarah regarding Bennett's question, only I didn't assume Bennett really didn't know the basics of bowling. I couldn't imagine anyone not knowing the basics, even if they'd never gotten into bowling and wasn't sure I'd ever met anyone who'd never bowled at least once in their life. It was a fairly popular birthday party venue or a simple, inexpensive and fun activity with friends. "I'm sure Bennett was just angling for a do-over," I said, jokingly eying him suspiciously. "I'd be okay with that. I mean, the course is nothing like a real one." I took quick steps as I spoke to retrieve the coconut that was cozied up next to the first pin. "It takes a few tries to figure out how hard you need to throw a coconut on a sand lane."
Holding out the coconut to Bennett, I turned to look at Sarah again to encourage more conversation out of her. "So, if we're gonna be getting uniforms, we'd need a team name. Got any ideas?"

"I guess the secret is out," Bennett grinned, retrieving the coconut from Heidi, trying to sound as least suspicious as possible. He played the situation off, yet he really felt uncultured and couldn't even begin to imagine what kind of lives these people truly came from. Yet, if the true secret had really been out, he was fairly confident that he would not be mingling and playing games with the survivors. The real game wasn't over, not yet. He just had to remain close to Heidi, and closer to the little girl. As long as he won over their trust, the main task would be easy in the end. And time was ticking. He loaded up his throwing arm and allowed the coconut to roll through the makeshift pins while the girls chatted, taking a backseat to listen for a moment or two.

"I'm sure Bennett was just angling for a do-over," Sarah thought about it for a second, really thinking about it, and gave a nod. That must have been it because everyone knew about bowling. This was a joke, she was starting to get better at them... kind of.
"So, if we're gonna be getting uniforms, we'd need a team name. Got any ideas?" Sarah pressed a finger to her lips and seemed to be thinking. Eyes narrowing for just a second before naming a few.
"Sandy Beaches, The Coconuts, The Sandcastles-" and then a little lightbulb went off and she got very excited. Her little arms going up and tight to her sides and balling her fists before announcing; "Mr. Floppers Angels!"

"Sandy Beaches, The Coconuts, The Sandcastles-"
"Oh, we do like our sandcastles," I volunteered but Sarah had suddenly gotten very excited with an idea that lit up her face that I wasn't sure if she even registered my comment.
"Mr. Floppers Angels!"
"That's adorable," I said on a chuckle, glancing over to see Bennett's throw knock over the right half of the can pins. "Nice shot!" I said, walking over to move the fallen cans out of the way as I continued talking to Sarah. "And you know what? Adorable names can be far more intimidating than scary ones. Throws off the competition," I finished in a conspiratorial stage whisper.
Fallen cans cleared, I grabbed the coconut and walked it back to Bennett. "See? You're already getting the hang of it," I encouraged. "Let's see if you can take down the rest of them."

"Nice shot!" "See? You're already getting the hang of it," "Let's see if you can take down the rest of them."
Bennett's smile beamed in his accomplishment as he looked from Heidi to Sarah, "Thanks to the help of Sarah. I'm lucky to have one smart cookie like you around," Bennett warmly complimented the little girl. He hadn't spent much time around many kids, and he knew Sarah wasn't ordinary. She was on the list, after all, so she had to be special. Her dictation, instruction giving and knowledge was astonishing which he noted to himself. His attention was brought back to the remainder of the makeshift pins, and putting his feet in place once more he swung the coconut in front of him gently but with enough force to attempt to take down as many pins as possible. A surprised look sprang upon his face once the coconuts came in contact with the pins, knocking them all down, "Haha! I stand by what I said - Mr. Flopper's Angels makes a great team!" Bennett exclaimed excitedly between Heidi and Sarah.

"And you know what? Adorable names can be far more intimidating than scary ones. Throws off the competition," Very true, names such as that could throw the opponents.
"Thanks to the help of Sarah. I'm lucky to have one smart cookie like you around," Sarah still wasn't sure about Bennett, but Sarah felt that way about a lot of people. She knew it wasn't fair to judge someone and maybe she was being too hard on him? No. "Haha! I stand by what I said - Mr. Flopper's Angels makes a great team!" Okay, he was okay.
Sarah giggled and gave his leg a squeeze.

I watched the coconut roll down the lane, angling my head to the left and gesturing my hands in the air toward the left as if mentally willing it to keep angling that way. Sure enough it did, hitting the lead cans right in the center which took the rest down in a domino effect.
"Nice! Go Bennett!" I cheered on while clapping. I was glad that he quickly got the hang of it. Not being able to get the hang of something or just plain sucking at it tended to make one not a fan of the activity and the last thing I wanted was for someone to be playing out of politeness while not actually enjoying themselves. It just made things awkward because it was usually obvious to everyone no matter how much a person put on a smile and pretended to have fun.
I glanced toward Bennett as he spoke to Sarah, noting that he seemed to be doing a great job at the whole interacting with kids thing, even though I got a sense of that same awkwardness around kids that I always felt. But it seemed he was correctly going through the motions of it by the way Sarah giggled and even went so far as to hug his leg. I looked up at Bennett with an encouraging smile, then started for the end of the lane.
"Either that was beginner's luck, or we've got a bowling hustler on our hands," I said to Sarah, playfully narrowing my eyes in suspicion at Bennett as I knelt down to start uprighting and refilling the cans. "Either way, I'm definitely not placing any bets!" I found myself grinning during the task, actually having a great time and forgetting about everything but the game.

"Either that was beginner's luck, or we've got a bowling hustler on our hands,"
Bennett sported a genuinely amused grin as his gaze panned from a playfully suspicious Heidi, back down to the excited little blonde girl whom finally showed signs of her approval of him, "Let's go with the first one," Bennett chuckled lightly, his fingertips playfully ruffled Sarah's bangs. He truly was enjoying their company, no doubt about that. Too bad him and little Sarah would have to cut it short sometime soon, though neither of the two girls had a clue. For now, they would enjoy the simple things - like coconut bowling. The group congregating far off into the distance on the beach had Bennett curious as he squinted slightly through the sun rays that bounced off of the water to try and get a better look before noticing the newcomer with them.
"Look what the cat dragged in - or I guess the Doc so to speak," Bennett spoke in a surprised tone as he watched the rest of the survivors begin to interact with the new guy in town. It was expected that Jack would want to introduce him to the rest of the survivors but didn't expect them to be down at the beach area especially with what was going on with Claire.

"Let's go with the first one,"
"Or you are a secret spy?" Sarah was only playing, but she got real serious and narrow her eyes. After a few seconds, she broke into a fit of giggles. "That's just silly you're not a spy!" Sarah moved away for a second to check the integration of the coconut, nodding in approval when she deemed it okay to go.
"Look what the cat dragged in - or I guess the Doc so to speak," Sarah looked up to see some of their friends and a new guy.
"Should we say hi?" Sarah asked looking over at Heidi.

"Or you are a secret spy?" "That's just silly you're not a spy!"
I laughed my agreement. "I don't think bowling is on the curriculum in spy school," I joked.
"Look what the cat dragged in - or I guess the Doc so to speak,"

I glanced over to see what had caught Bennett's and Sarah's attention. Some of the cave dwellers were over for a visit. "Oh, they look pretty busy," I said, eying the rather large crowd of people seemingly drawn into a deeper kind of interaction than usual. I didn't notice the reason for the interaction to be different this time around as I didn't think much of it. Probably just discussing new tasks or new ideas for rescue. Crowds weren't my favorite anyway and I tended to zone them out, especially when they were made up of people I didn't know all that well, hence my not noticing what Bennett and Sarah were noticing about this particular interaction. I did note a couple people that I and Sarah knew better in the group, one of which I saw break away and head for the shelters, and assumed it was them that had drawn Sarah's interest. "I'm sure Gwen and Linda will come over to say 'hi' before they head back," I reassured.

"Or you are a secret spy?" "That's just silly you're not a spy!" "I don't think bowling is on the curriculum in spy school,"
Bennett was thankful that Heidi made light of Sarah's little joke. He had no choice other than to match the energy both girls were putting out in regards to the fun 'secret spy' poke. The last thing he needed was for anyone to catch onto his and Ethan's trail, "Heidi's right...we only learned how to infiltrate survivor camps and 'pretend' we know how to bowl," Bennett laughed, his demeanor unchanged from a joshing manner. He was getting better at keeping his cool, now as long as no one else got in his way and made him look incapable, he actually believed that him and Ethan could really pull this whole thing off. He'd be back home with his father in no time.
"Should we say hi?" "Oh, they look pretty busy," "I'm sure Gwen and Linda will come over to say 'hi' before they head back,"
"Right," Bennett added to Heidi's verdict, catching Gwen traveling into the Mid-jungle area. And then Sawyer after her, in the same direction. Thinking the actions to be rather odd and out of place, Bennett took a mental note of what he just saw before returning his attention back to Sarah and Heidi, "So, is it still my turn or who is next?" Bennett asked for clarification amongst their distractions.

"Oh, they look pretty busy, I'm sure Gwen and Linda will come over to say 'hi' before they head back," Sarah could see that everyone was in the middle of talking, she didn't want to be rude. So, she nodded her head and gave a smile.
"So, is it still my turn or who is next?"
"My turn." Sarah gave a grin and tested out the coconut, really getting a feel for it. "we need to reset." She looked up at Bennett, encouraging him to help out.
