5 stars from me as well!!
God I love this show. I'm sure I've said that a millions times by now. XD The premiere of the final season is an emotional rollercoaster. So very many feels! It was hard to see Juliet die in the season 5 finale. But then, you get this rush of joyful glee when Kate hears Juliet and you think, omg, she made it! She's alive! Only to have her end up dying once again. So basically, those sadistic writers made us suffer the Juliet's death and Sawyer's torment TWICE! So cruel! But also, I'm forever amazed at how good these writers are at making us
feel.
We started with flashbacks. Then the writers blew our minds with flashforwards. After that, we didn't think there was any way to blow our minds any further. Then they gave us flashsideways! That's what they're officially called, Ilona. Flashsideways!
So it seems blowing up the bomb worked... sort of? Alternate timeline is exactly the same theory as myself and a majority of viewers had! We definitely see we're right, at least in a way. We see them living two different lives; the one we've been watching with the crash, and another sideways reality where they didn't. In the flashsideways, we see the island at the bottom of the ocean. (By the way, did you see that same shark we saw in season 2 premiere with the Dharma logo on its tail swim by again? lol) That means that there was no Hatch, no Desmond pushing the button 108 minutes and missing one of those deadlines which caused the crash. My assumption is that the island is at the bottom of the ocean because of the bomb that went off back in 1977.
So basically, their future selves set off a bomb in the past that saved their past selves from crashing on the island in their past future. XD It's all a big ball of wibbly wobbly, timey-wimey stuff.
I also really loved seeing all the blasts from the past. They were another emotional rollercoaster for me. Charlie! Arzt! Boone! Even that douche Frogurt guy! XD We also had some old faces appear in the original timeline! Cindy and the two kids, Zach and Emma! And the one-armed corpse when they go into the tunnel! I was like, "Montand!" XD
And Desmond! What was he doing on the plane? Well, the island is at the bottom of the ocean so I take that to mean that Desmond's life was very different. He was wearing a wedding ring! So he's married, I'm hoping to Penny.
Crazy that he happened to be on the same flight. Seems their paths are destined to cross. Is it just me, though, or was he acting a tiny bit strange? He seemed to have randomly been in the seat beside Jack's when Jack came back to his seat. He just had this look or aura about him that made me feel like he knew something. I can't explain it. Then later, he's just gone. Daniel did tell Desmond that he different from everyone else, that he was special and that the rules didn't apply to him. Almost as if Desmond defied the laws of physics when it came to time and such. Remember Desmond's ability to mentally go into his past self? Is this really a flashsideways version, oblivious to that other timeline when he was on an island for years, or does he somehow know of both realities?
Desmond being on the plane and wearing a wedding ring in the flashsideways isn't the only difference. There were several others, strangely enough several that had to do with wedding rings. Some might not be that important, some might:
- Flashsideways, Cindy only gave Jack one liquor bottle and Jack jokes that it'll be their secret. Original timeline, she gave him two and he joked that it went against FAA regulations.
- Original timeline, Rose was wearing Bernard's ring around her necklace. Flashsideways, Bernard returns from the bathroom and we see he's wearing his ring.
- Original, Charlie planned to flush the heroine. Flashsideways, he tried swallowing it and ends up choking.
- Original, Hurley thinks he's cursed. Flashsideways, he believes he's the luckiest man alive.
- Original, Boone got Shannon to go back with him. Flashsideways, he tells Locke he couldn't convince her to leave. So she's still in Sidney, I guess?
- Original, Jin and Sun are married. Flashsideways, Jin isn't wearing a wedding ring. Sun is wearing some small ring that doesn't look like a wedding ring and the customs people call her Ms. Paik, not Mrs. Kwon! So they're didn't get married?
- Original, Christian's body was on the plane. Flashsideways, his body didn't make it on the plane and nobody knows where the heck he is.
In the flashsideways, I didn't see Michael, Walt, or Claire anywhere on the plane. Either they weren't there or we just weren't shown them. Maybe on a future ep? Some of the characters were also sitting in different places, though I don't think that matters much. I think that was for the benefit of seeing them interact more easily with each other.
Yes! Juliet's last words! "It worked." Does that mean she knows about the alternate timeline? In a sense, it did work for their other selves in the flashsideways but their original selves are still stuck in the same boat. Or is she possibly referring to something completely different? Who knows. Miles got that message from her after she passed. Perhaps once someone is no longer in the realm of the living, they can see and know things that we can't fathom.
There were some really great parallels between the original timeline and the flashsideways:
- Boone saying to Locke that if the plane goes down, he'd stick with him, obviously because he got the feeling he'd be able to survive with Locke at his side. Well, he kinda did stick with Locke, though it led to his death.
- When Jack goes to help Charlie who isn't breathing, he shouts that he needs a pen, does anybody have a pen. In the original timeline, it was Boone who asked Jack if he needs a pen to puncture a hole in some unnamed guy's throat so he could breath and Jack sent Boone off to find a pen, just to get Boone out of his way.
- After Jack saves Charlie, Charlie asks if he's alive and Jack confirms he is. Then Charlie is upset and says to Jack that he was supposed to die.
I loved how Jack and Locke were the last two left on the plane and later, both in lost luggage office. The two main men of science vs. faith seem to be bound together no matter what timeline. I really loved how they seem to get along really well in the flashsideways and loved seeing Jack give Locke his card and maybe a bit of hope that he could help. There goes Jack, always trying to fix things, lol. But definitely gives hope that the two will see each other again in the flashsideways!
Sayid! WTF?! He was dead for two hours then just gets up.
I had a feeling his death wasn't final because it was so uneventful and there wasn't any feels put into it. I'm totally concerned about the whole thing though. Even Dogen (the dude who refuses to speak English) is weirded out by it. It's got to have something to do with how Dogen and the others were saying the color of the water wasn't right. I guess it's supposed to be clear but it was kinda dirty looking. I wonder if that happened after Jacob was killed? As if he was the key to making the island the miraculous place it was?
Also, remember when Ben was a kid and Kate asked Richard to save him after Sayid shot him? He said he could take Ben to the temple to save him but he'd never be the same again. I'm guessing this is the exact same thing they did to save Ben, only that time, the water was clear and the procedure worked correctly. No two hours dead thing that made the Others look leery.
Oh man, seriously, there was SO MUCH in this episode that I could go on and on with all the more minute details, but I don't wanna sit here writing all night long or create a book for you to read. XD
Have you actually spoilered me in your review of the season 5 finale, Heidi? XD Maybe it was just me, but I didn't get the idea that Locke is the smog monster before you said that lol. I feel sorry for the real Locke though... especially when Jacob was talking about Locke's feelings the moment he got killed by Ben's hands.
Oh no! I'm sorry if I did. I thought it was obvious he was the Smoke Monster? I mean, we saw Locke's corpse. Who else has the ability to walk around looking like dead people? We saw Smokie do it all the time over the past few seasons. And in the season 5 premiere, we saw Jacob and MIB talking and MIB said he was going to find a way to kill Jacob. That he'd find a loophole. Then in the season 5 finale, he said he found his loophole.
I also feel incredibly sorry for the real Locke. That has got to be one of the most heartbreakingly tragic lives I've ever seen.
Favorite quotes/moments:Seeing all the characters we hadn't seen in so long.
Bernard: (after experiencing turbulence in the tiny plane bathroom) Now I know how the laundry feels when it's in the dryer.
Jacob: Your friend Jin won't be able to see me.
Hurley: Why not?
Jacob: Because I died an hour ago.
Hurley: Sorry, dude, that sucks.
Charlie: Am I alive?
Jack: Yah, you're alive.
