"I can't stay here,"
"What?" she said incredulously. There wasn't anywhere else to go. They were stuck here and sticking together was the safest.
"I'm leaving. I don't know for how long, but all I know is that I cannot stay."
She understood. She saw the anguish on his face and knew why he felt he had to leave and that nothing would sway him. But it still didn't stop her from making a half-hearted attempt to change his mind. "Sayid, you can't. We still don't know what's out there." At the very least, her comment would serve as a reminder that something very dangerous was out there.

"Sayid, you can't. We still don't know what's out there."
"I've worse things to fear than what's in the jungle," Sayid affirmed shamefully, "What I did today, what I almost did, I swore to do never again. If I can't keep that promise, I have no right to be here. " It was known to Sayid that the moment Kate had entered the conversation that she would try what she could do to persuade him otherwise. Yet, the circumstances were beyond the events of today and they weighed heavy on Sayid's heart.
"Someone has to walk the shore and map the Island, see what else there is. I can't think of a better person to do it than the only one I trust." Through his remorse, Sayid managed to pull through with a half hearted smile to his saddened friend before bending his head down to scoop her hand into his, "I hope we meet again." Sayid kissed her hand in a farewell gesture, and tightening the bag on his shoulder he disappeared into the settling shadows of the late afternoon.

"I've worse things to fear than what's in the jungle," "What I did today, what I almost did, I swore to do never again. If I can't keep that promise, I have no right to be here. "
She knew trying to talk him out of it was pointless but she couldn't help to at least remind him of the fact they were all trapped here. There was no way to truly escape and he had just as much of a right to be here as anyone, no matter what he'd been driven into doing. "There's nowhere to go," she said half-heartedly.
"Someone has to walk the shore and map the Island, see what else there is. I can't think of a better person to do it than the only one I trust."
Amused, Kate smiled though there was sadness in it.
"I hope we meet again."
He took her hand and kissed it. The gesture was sweet and endearing, showing the real person Kate thought him to be. Not the monster he thought himself. Her voice carried softly after his retreating form. "Take care of yourself."
Kate thought of all he'd done these past 10 days as she watched his form growing smaller with distance. The camp was taking a great loss with his departure.

*Sarah and Heidi Enter from F3 area survivors camp day*
Sarah was very upset, how could someone treat another so terrible? Grumbling and pulled away from Heidi and crossed her arms. "That man is not nice, shame on him." How could anyone treat Miss Gwen so horrible? She's done so much for everyone!

I barely stopped myself from retorting with 'Most men aren't' but it was best not to push my jaded view on someone so young. "I agree," I said instead. I knelt down to be more at eye level with Sarah and patted the sand besides me, hoping she'd sit so we could work together to talk and calm down. "He's just... very military," was the best excuse I could come up with for Spencer. "He's tactical but he lacts tact when talking to people. He's thinking about the wellbeing of all of us rather than just an individual."
It was helping me as well to think about this logically. No way did I want Gwen going out there. But also, no way did I want to spend the rest of my life on an island with a scary dinosaur-type creature. I'd been trying to ignore the logic that the thing could just as easily come into camp but after Spencer straight up laid that fact out, it wasn't something I could continue to ignore. Maybe the map Gwen promised to draw up would suffice. I could only hope.
"I don't think she's gonna go," I began, having no idea that shortly after we'd walked away, Gwen had announced she was going, "but even if she did, she'd be with two tough military guys who've already seen and handled scary situations, and Kate, who's survived more crazy treks into the jungle than I can count."

"I agree," Sarah was fuming but she took the patch of sand that Heidi offered and sighed. "He's just... very military, He's tactical but he lacts tact when talking to people. He's thinking about the wellbeing of all of us rather than just an individual."
"I guess," She really didn't understand most of that but she understood. However, she got the concept of thinking about everyone and how it could possibly help.
"I don't think she's gonna go, but even if she did, she'd be with two tough military guys who've already seen and handled scary situations, and Kate, who's survived more crazy treks into the jungle than I can count." Sarah sighed, she didn't want to think about anyone going into that jungle. Whatever was in there didn't want them there, it didn't want any of them there- or did it?
"I'm sorry for losing my temper, Miss Heidi." Sarah knew it could have been a lot worse but lately she didn't feel so angry. Which was weird because she didn't have anymore of her medication. "I feel different."

"I'm sorry for losing my temper, Miss Heidi."
"It's perfectly fine. It happens to everyone, as you've seen so many times already," I said, gesturing to the camp as a whole. "And you can just call me Heidi if you'd like. I'm your friend, not your teacher," I said, tapping her nose with a grin. I watched Sarah turn serious again.
"I feel different."
"Different?" I repeated, leaning back to check her over. I saw no visual signs of a problem, so I leaned back and put my wrist to her forehead to see if she felt warm. No problem there, either. "Different how?" I asked, dropping my arm and giving her my full attention.

Sarah could only voice it how she saw it, simply put. "I'm like everybody else- normal." When Sarah arrived on the island, she was less verbal and short tempered. Even only days ago she was different than she was right now. Twelve days ago she wouldn't have been able to stand up for Miss Gwen- not without shutting down. Now she was throwing sand in people's face. She could always understand but not verbalize how she was feeling, not properly so everyone could understand. "I don't like this, I don't like feeling different." Nothing was wrong with her before, she was her and everyone else was them but now she was them.

What Sarah described feeling certainly sounded strange. I had a feeling even someone with medical and/or psychological knowledge would find it strange, but I could be wrong. A change in a person's mental state, even one that some might consider for the better, was unsettling. You're accustomed to living in a certain state, then suddenly, you're in another one. I couldn't imagine what that was like but it couldn't be easy feeling foreign to yourself.
"I don't like this, I don't like feeling different."
"Oh sweetie," I said, pulling her into a hug and running a hand over her hair. "It'll be okay. We'll figure it out." I let her go so we could talk and try to figure things out. "Has anything changed in your usual routine? Are you taking all your prescriptions?" In a sudden panic, I realized another possible problem. I quickly clamped down on it before it could show on my face and asked in a calm voice, "Did you run out of something you're supposed to be taking?"

"Oh sweetie, It'll be okay. We'll figure it out." Sarah hoped so because she didn't know how to handle all this. "Has anything changed in your usual routine? Are you taking all your prescriptions? Did you run out of something you're supposed to be taking?"
"I ran out days ago, I only had enough to get me through my trip. They are supposed to keep me calm and- but I feel calm without them. Well besides throwing things at Spencer but that wasn't because I didn't take my meds."

"I ran out days ago, I only had enough to get me through my trip.
I felt panic start to build within. Why hadn't I known that? I'd taken on the majority of the responsibility of Sarah's wellbeing so I should have thought to check on that. I was so not parent material.
They are supposed to keep me calm and- but I feel calm without them. Well besides throwing things at Spencer but that wasn't because I didn't take my meds."
A laugh bubbled out as my panic eased. I saw the oddity of it just as she did but thank goodness she seemed to still be feeling as she should with the help of meds. "It certainly wasn't," I said, still chuckling. "I was imagining kicking him in the shin and I'm pretty sure Gwen was imagining throwing a punch." I leaned forward, speaking quieter. "On behalf of Gwen and myself, thanks for the bit of satisfaction, though it's probably best you avoid acting on those kinds of impulses." I tapped her nose and in the corner of my eye, spotted Kate heading away from Jack. Turning serious at the perfect timing of it, I said, "Looks like Jack is paying the beach people a visit. How about we try to catch him before he returns to the caves to see what he thinks?"

With Sarah still sleeping, I took a little "me" time and sat in what I was starting to think of as my spot. Lounged against the tree, sitting in its shade near the water, I checked over my bandage and was relieved to see it was holding up well. Memories of last night replayed in my head. It had certainly been... interesting--for lack of a better word--that I'd ended up spending the last part of my day with the one person I'd been making a point of avoiding all this time.
There was no way I could have avoided him forever. Small island, handful of people. I was bound to have to face him at some point. It had gone surprisingly well. I wouldn't exactly call us friends. But what though? Mutually tolerant acquaintances? I didn't much care for rude and disrespectful people but it was always my goal to try to be nice, and judging by how he usually acted, the friendly tolerance was a much bigger burden on him.
Either way, things had gone way better than I'd expected. I'd even had fun, playfully bantering. I loved that kind of stuff. Even the bandage changing had gone smoothly. I'd managed to mentally disconnect myself from the task enough to only feel slightly queasy when cleaning his wound. Still though, I knew it'd be best to avoid being around him. It might have been a total fluke that I'd stumbled into a moment when Sawyer was feeling amenable.
Pulling my eyes from the water and my mind from thoughts of yesterday, I looked down at the ancient journal resting against my arched legs. Of all the things in that sack Linda and I had found at the bottom of that smuggler's hold, it was the one that fascinated me the most. Avoiding touching it as much as possible (I remembered hearing about damaging effects of the oils of skin from various archeology specials), I used a single finger tip to carefully turn the ancient pages.
So many different looking languages. One page I guessed was Latin, another then another of two kinds I couldn't even make a guess at. It was the next page that had me stopping on it to study and scrutinize. I'd always been so fascinated with hieroglyphs. I stared at the little pictures, wishing I could decipher it, trying to make guesses based off the very little I knew about them from my History of Ancient Egypt class. Sometimes the hieroglyph was literally what the little picture was. Sometimes it was symbolic. There were so many factors in deciphering that it would be impossible to guess what it might say, but I always loved trying.

Jasmine was lost, she didn't know what her purpose was here. She never imagined she would be on an island with strangers, doing laundry, gathering random things to survive. She had so many plans that were now out the window, would they ever be rescued? Looking around she spotted Heidi in the distance and decided to say hi. It had been at least a day or two since they last spoke.
Making her way over she cleared her throat to announce her presence. Not wanting to just plop down in the sand and scared her to death, "Hey," She then plopped down with a smile and took notice of the book. "What is that thing?" She was sure Heidi didn't have that when they crash landed.

I took my time, really absorbing each symbol on each page with such fascination. A couple pages in, a throat clearing and voice broke through my deep absorbtion.
"Hey,"
I glanced up, a big smile welcoming her to join me coming across my face over seeing someone I felt I hadn't seen in forever. "Hi!" Weird how it felt like forever simply because they were all stuck in a small place with not very many people.
"What is that thing?"
Watching her settle beside me and take notice of the book, I shifted it to rest on my leg next to her to allow her better view of it. "Some random journal Linda and I found in that smuggler's hold we fell into. I think it's really old. Like, seriously old. Not just the condition," I said, carefully shifting the cover closed to show the weathered outside and page edges before carefully opening it back up, "I mean, look at this. When's the last time someone would have used hieroglyphics just for writing in a journal?"

***Kate enters from the Caves***
She'd been relieved to reach the beach. A backpack of filled water bottles was much heavier than you'd think and the weight felt as if it increased every few minutes of the nearly hour trek back to the beach.
Bottles neatly placed along with the community supplies, Kate had tossed her backpack into her shelter then had headed for the shore. She passed Jasmine and Heidi chatting over a book in the shade and didn't intrude, leaving enough distance between herself and everyone else to give herself a bit of solitude.
Watching the waves, she stretched the kinks out of her back, bending to the left, then right, then pulled one arm across for a stretch, followed by the other. She suddenly found herself turning until the shore was to her right. Loosely crossing her arms, she stared off in the direction Sayid had disappeared into two days ago, wondering where he was, hoping he was safe, and wishing she'd see his silhouette suddenly reappear in the distance.

*** Jack and Gwen enter from The Caves ***
Jack exhaled the salty air from his lungs as he scanned the beach camp. Smiling, he was rather contempt with the unfolding scene of the uneventful day as survivors went about chatting up one another, preparing food, making shelters. Jack only hoped that it could stay this uneventful, even just for one day. They all deserved a break from looming fears of polar bears and mysterious tree crashing monsters.
Spotting Heidi conversing with Jasmine amidst the shade of a tree, Jack remembered that Heidi had been wounded in her terrifying encounter in the jungle the other day and realized that he hadn't tended to her in some time. She was a really easy going patient, so Jack figured that he would do a quick check in before heading over to Sawyer who was in need of antibiotics. Perhaps he was stalling his time, but who could really blame Jack for avoiding the self centered asshole of the camp?
As he prepared to lead Gwen in Heidi's direction, Jack caught a glimpse of Kate by the shore. The sparkling waves crashing against the sand beside her accented her already natural beauty, completely catching Jack off guard momentarily. Worry seemed to strike her complexion, and as soon as Jack noticed he fell victim to his immediate curiosity.
"Hey Gwen...I've got to take care of something real quick. Do you mind checking in with Heidi over there - make sure her wounds haven't grown infected and change any bandages as necessary?" Jack turned to Gwen as he retrieved the bag from over his shoulder and brought it around front. Unzipping the top, he pulled out a pack with bandages,a bottle of alcohol and some swabs, "She'll be an easy first patient. I know you'll do great." Jack grinned graciously at Gwen as he offered her the pack.

After a short time of traipsing through trees and along muddy pathways, they found themselves back among the sparse trees that gave way to the beach. Funny how that place had started to feel like home, or at least a temporary one. Gwen was relieved to see that business seemed to be carrying on as usual. When Jack's steps in the sand took a pause, she followed his gaze to see Kate down by the water. Well, he had been with her on the first trip to the cockpit to obtain the transceiver. He likely wanted to hear how the return trip had gone. To hear it from Kate.
"Hey Gwen...I've got to take care of something real quick. Do you mind checking in with Heidi over there - make sure her wounds haven't grown infected and change any bandages as necessary? She'll be an easy first patient. I know you'll do great."
"Oh, don't be fooled by that smiling, bubbly exterior, Jack," Gwen cautioned with mock sincerity, taking the proferred packet. "I happen to know she's actually Cruella De Ville's less nice sister." With Jack headed in the opposite direction, she walked over to where Heidi and Jasmine were resting under the shade of a tree. Heidi seemed to still be studying the old book she'd found.
"Morning, ladies," she greeted. "I'm on medical detail today. How's your leg?" she asked Heidi, as she knelt down beside her in the sand.

Once Jack passed the pack to Gwen full of supplies, he confidently turned to depart from her momentarily as he strolled across the stretch of sand towards the freckled brunette staring off into the vast ocean landscape. Jack had been aching to speak with Kate the moment the group had returned from their Jungle excursion. Though Jack had an inkling that the fact that she didn't flag him down to inform him of their findings was because there was simply nothing to report. That's what he wanted to believe, to say the least.
"So you missed the ocean that much while away?" Jack walked up beside Kate, grinning playfully as his tone poked fun at missing the same damn sight they had to look at just about every day they were stranded on this island, "Did you find what you were looking for out there?" Jack anticipated her answer, even though he already had a feeling as to what it would probably be.

"Hey,"
I looked up and smiled at Jasmine, hiding my worry as I wondered how she'd been doing. "Hi!" I said with inviting encouragement.
She'd been keeping to herself so much and I hadn't felt right about intruding on a solitude it had felt and looked like she'd needed. So for the time being, I'd been sure to give her warm, open smiles that held the silent promise that I was here if she wanted to talk. It was looking like she might be testing out the idea of abandoning her solitude.
"What is that thing?"
"Oh," I said, looking down momentarily at it before back up to her. "It's some old journal Linda and I found in that smuggler's hold." I carefully turned a few pages for her to get the look of it, then closed it so she could see the cover. "More like ancient," I reassessed.
Motion coming toward us caught my attention and I looked over to see who was approaching us, smiling when I saw it was Gwen.
"Morning, ladies,"
"Mornin'!" I said with extra enthusiasm, seeing that she'd returned safely from braving a trek in the jungle.
"I'm on medical detail today. How's your leg?"
"Well, Dr. Gwen," I teased, stretching out my leg. I carefully rolled up my jeans as I continued. "I think it's doing well. Healing faster than I'd expected. I cleaned it and changed the bandage last night. Speaking of," I added quietly, "I had my first run-in with Sawyer." Eyes wide, I looked between the two of them with an over exaggerated expression of shock and awe as if I'd just told them I'd faced an enraged bear, or in our case, polar bear, and lived to tell the tale.

Kate continued to stare off down the shore, watching the waves lap and still willing Sayid to appear. Her worried thoughts were occasionally distracted with thoughts of two other men who frustratingly would not leave her thoughts. She'd been tempted to check in on Sawyer and regretted not having stayed to talk with Jack at the caves, both notions her logical mind told her were exactly why she'd been right in avoiding both situations. Temptation, regret, restraint and distraction. Round and round she went in a cycle her logical mind told her was pointless. And so she concentrated on her worry, the only feeling she told herself was important.
"So you missed the ocean that much while away?"
Kate had allowed herself to get lost in her worry. She hadn't heard Jack approaching but the sound of his voice automatically filled her with a warmth that brought a grin to her face. "It's kind of becoming ingrained. I'm seriously considering getting one of those wave sounds machines when we get back," she playfully volleyed back.
He'd reached her side and she looked over, momentarily taken in by his playful grin. Now that he'd pulled her from her worry and right back into that cycle, she had to remind herself of the restraint and distraction.
"Did you find what you were looking for out there?"
He'd given her the perfect opportunity to put her concentration back on the worry. Kate pulled her gaze from him and looked forward again, her head angled more toward the sand along the shore than the water to indicate that that had been where her attention had been. "It's been two days since Sayid took off on his own. I keep looking up, thinking I'm going to see him coming back."

"Oh, you poor thing," Gwen consoled. It was one thing to be trapped on a plane for a finite number of hours with a narcissistic jerk and then hurry them out the door and breathe a sigh of relief. But Sawyer and his makeshift market was a part of their lives now, whether they liked it or not.
"Well, you look unscathed," she observed, gently removing the existing bandage and prepping a gauze pad soaked in alcohol to clean the wound. "What on earth did he want from you?" No doubt sweet, accommodating Heidi had been eager to help and she resented that he had found a way to take advantage of the young woman.

"It's been two days since Sayid took off on his own. I keep looking up, thinking I'm going to see him coming back."
Jack understood her concerns. She cared about Sayid, and the more they became involved with one another the more they cared. But he knew that Sayid was capable of taking care of himself. And if he went off on his own, he clearly knew what he was doing and sure as hell knew how to take care of himself.
"He'll come back when he's found what he is looking for," Jack reassured Kate gently as he nodded, as if to convince himself as well, "Sayid knows what he's doing out there. He'll be alright." Jack noted, as they both were well aware of what kind of training Sayid had to back up his safety.

"Oh, you poor thing,"
Feeling as if I was getting as much concern and pity for facing Sawyer as I'd gotten for the run-in with the monster, I couldn't help laughing.
"Well, you look unscathed,"
I stopped laughing and tried to remain still while Gwen got to work. "It actually wasn't so bad. And totally all on me. I made the decision to go in there. Just needed some new bandaging for my leg. The other one had gotten wet when Sarah and I were collecting seashells. I thought, 'Maybe I can just sneak in and out without waking him up.'" I shrugged as obviously I hadn't been so lucky.
"What on earth did he want from you?"
I drew in a little breath between my teeth as the alcohol hit my wound but quickly recovered. "Oh man, that was the one thing I was worried about when I considered the possibility of him waking up. I really don't have anything. But I noticed that his bandages weren't looking so great. I don't think Jack had gotten around to checking up on him." I had no idea what all was going on between the two and only assumed that Jack had simply been busy. "So I offered to appease his curiosity about what had happened to my leg while changing his bandages."
I watched Gwen work, noting how she was actually quite good at this which reminded me that I had zero experience. "So yah, someone might wanna check out how I did 'cause my experience is based solely off seeing other people do that stuff in movies and on TV. You, though. You seem like you know what you're doing." There was curiosity in my tone that covered the question of 'how'.
Jasmine was starting to shift uncomfortably and look around. I wasn't surprised when she excused herself to wander along the shore on her own. It had been the first time she was trying to get back to normal social interactions. It would take some time, but I was glad to see she was finally starting the process of coming out of her solitude.

"He'll come back when he's found what he is looking for," "Sayid knows what he's doing out there. He'll be alright."
Kate looked at Jack. How could he be so nonchalant, so calm about the whole thing? He was completely missing the point. Putting aside the fact that Sayid was very capable, probably the most capable of them all, there were things she was pretty sure even Sayid hadn't faced. Polar bears, being one. Not exactly an animal one would have come up against during Desert Storm, but more importantly the thing Kate was sure nobody had come up against anywhere other than here.
But that wasn't even the point. Did Jack seriously believe Sayid had taken off for the reason he claimed? Had he been too busy to see how much of a toll the jungle interrogation fiasco had taken on Sayid? It bothered her that Jack didn't seem phased for the lengths they'd gone to and some of that frustration was in her tone. "He isn't looking for anything. He left because of what happened -- for what he did."

"Oh man, that was the one thing I was worried about when I considered the possibility of him waking up. ... So I offered to appease his curiosity about what had happened to my leg while changing his bandages. So yah, someone might wanna check out how I did 'cause my experience is based solely off seeing other people do that stuff in movies and on TV. You, though. You seem like you know what you're doing."
"Not sure I'd say that," Gwen said with a slight laugh. "I'm definitely still a novice at this first aid thing. But I'm sure Jack will take a look at Sawyer while he's here. And I will leave you some extra bandages so that you don't have to venture into his tent again." She finished securing the bandage onto Heidi's leg with some tape and then relaxed back into the sand with a sigh.
"Spencer managed to find that device he was looking for," Gwen explained. "For whatever that's worth. And with Kate and Gabe's help, we buried the remains of the passengers out there. By the time we were done, it was getting late so we had to camp out for the night. I promise, no more jungle jaunts," she declared, holding up a hand in affirmation.
She glanced over to where Jasmine was walking, wondering if she'd had any more visions of Jordan. Which reminded her of someone else she hadn't spoken to in a while. "Have you seen Sebastian lately?" she asked. "It's been a couple of days, and...well, he wasn't at the cave, and he didn't seem the type to go into the woods on his own."

I sighed with dramatic relief. "Thank goodness, 'cause that was my one and only interesting story to barter with."
"Spencer managed to find that device he was looking for,"
Oh god, that's right. Here I was, sharing an, in hindsight, not-so-harrowing story of my run-in with Sawyer when Gwen and a few others had been off in the scary ass jungle. It sobered me and I listened intently.
"For whatever that's worth. And with Kate and Gabe's help, we buried the remains of the passengers out there. By the time we were done, it was getting late so we had to camp out for the night. I promise, no more jungle jaunts,"
I grinned at her animated promise, though with a little sadness with the thought of the deceased that had been sitting out there nearly two weeks just now laid to rest. "I'm gonna hold you to that promise."
"Have you seen Sebastian lately?" "It's been a couple of days, and...well, he wasn't at the cave, and he didn't seem the type to go into the woods on his own."
"Hm," I said, thinking it over and looking around the camp as if that would jog my memory. "I think I may have seen him around here and there, but I can't be sure. I'm horribly not aware of my surroundings. Definitely something I should improve on during our stay on WTF Island. Oh," I said upon recollection of something I remembered him saying. "He's got that fancy head doctor degree. Didn't he say something about putting it to use? Maybe he's been keeping busy with one-on-ones, probably in more private sessions away from the main camp."

"Hmm, perhaps," Gwen allowed. "A trauma counselor would have no shortage of clients around here." It was part of Sebastian's appeal -- his empathy and willingness to listen. Even to her dysfunctional family issues that now seemed so small. Still, she couldn't let go of the feeling that there was something more sinister to his disappearance, if he actually had disappeared.
Desperate for a change of topic, she noticed that Heidi was still holding the book she'd found out in the jungle. "Any luck deciphering it?" she asked, her gaze falling on one of the open pages. "The writing looks almost like Egyptian hieroglyphics. Amateur archaeologist," she admitted, pointing at herself. "Watched 'Raiders of the Lost Ark' way too many times."

"Any luck deciphering it?"
I looked down at the book and sighed my disappointment. "No. No matter how hard I stare at it, my brain refuses to suddenly know how to translate it."
"The writing looks almost like Egyptian hieroglyphics. Amateur archaeologist," "Watched 'Raiders of the Lost Ark' way too many times."
I laughed. "And I watched The Mummy and The Mummy Returns over 20 times in theatres each and yet I still can't read hieroglyphics." I suddenly did a double take of Gwen and studied her closely, narrowing my eyes and turning my head different ways. "Speaking of The Mummy, I just realized you have a passing resemblance to Rachel Weisz at certain angles."
