"Which one was that one, 'cause I'll definitely be able to keep it straight after that."
"Uh, pretty sure that was Steve," Gabe offered. "Scott wouldn't do a thing like that." In all honesty, he had no idea if either man was capable of such rudeness in their haste to gather firewood. And if it was so important, they should have gone after it themselves, he inwardly thought with resentment. Oh well, everyone was doing the best they could in their present circumstances. Some just had more experience with adverse circumstances than others. He could tell Kate shared that in common with him. Not in the military sense, but almost certainly graduating from the school of hard knocks, with honors.
After Gabe had placed his own bundle of branches on the ground and untied the seat belt around them, he noticed she was worrying with something on her arm. Hopefully not a scratch from their homemade axes or a bite from some heretofore unknown and deadly insect. "Here, let me take a look," Gabe said, with the patience of a father who'd seen his son take way too many spills around the ranch. As he gently moved her arm this way and that by the wrist, he could see the sliver of wood protruding from her skin. "Nasty splinter ya' got there," he officially diagnosed.
Of course, the doctor wasn't around, and this was hardly a life-threatening injury. But it would require some ingenuity since he was without a sterile needle or tweezers. He looked around and noted the community pile of fruit and the unattended stash in Sawyer's shelter. "Two seconds," he said with an encouraging smile, before taking off.
When Gabe returned a few minutes later, he was holding a banana and a roll of bandages. "Don't laugh, but I got this one from Grandma Myrtle," he explained, peeling the banana as he talked. "She grew up during the Depression, notoriously stingy, hated going to the doctor because it costs too much money. Never gave us kids more than a quarter at Christmas." He placed a strip of the banana peel, inner side down, on Kate's arm at the site of the splinter. Then he began to secure it in place with the bandage. "Anyway, when you tape the banana peel onto your skin, something science-y in it forces the splinter to the surface. Give it a half hour or so, it should come right out, easy peasy."
He made sure the wrapping was tight enough and then tugged the end of the roll in place. Breaking the now-unpeeled banana in half, he handed it to Kate. "I mean, you should still have Jack take a look at it," Gabe advised, somehow managing a knowing smirk while chewing at the same time. "In case you were needin' an excuse."

"Uh, pretty sure that was Steve," "Scott wouldn't do a thing like that."
"Hmph," came her short laugh as she shot Steve's retreating back a glare before returning her attention back to her arm. She knew he hasn't intended to hurt her. It was an accident due to hastiness and his inability to gather his own firewood. At least it seemed he was placing importance in keeping the signal fires burning, hence his hurry to throw more wood on the dwindling piles that had once been strong back in the first few days. It seemed their upkeep was matching the people's dwindling belief in anyone coming along to actually see them.
"Here, let me take a look,"
"Oh, it's not that bad," she insisted, letting him take hold of her arm anyway. She looked between her arm and observing him assessing the damage and could easily see this wasn't his first foray into dealing with an injury that was more typically attributed to a playtime mishap. Despite the fact she wasn't a child, she found the care he took charming.
"Nasty splinter ya' got there,"
Kate shrugged. "As a lifelong tree climber, I've had much worse," she reassured. Amused and curious, she silently watched him check out their surroundings while the wheels turned in his head. He proved to be quite resourceful in whatever situation she'd seen him come up against so she was looking forward to what he'd come up with.
She did see his attention fall on Sawyer's shelter for a little longer than could be considered passing gaze. "Maybe I should--" she started to suggest, having had enough interactions with Sawyer to know she could manage to venture in and out of his shelter relatively unscathed.
"Two seconds,"
With an encouraging smile, he was off. It wasn't worth bothering trying to talk him out of it, and she got the feeling it wasn't worth trying to talk him out of anything he set his mind to. Sawyer's shelter was currently empty anyway. Wasn't he supposed to be resting still, she wondered, returning her attention to her arm and continuing the agonizingly slow process of attempting to push the splinter out.
In just a few minutes, Kate looked up to see Gabe approaching holding a banana and a roll of bandages. She raised her eyebrows and smirked in amusement. "Did you get hungry along the way?" she joked.
"Don't laugh, but I got this one from Grandma Myrtle," "She grew up during the Depression, notoriously stingy, hated going to the doctor because it costs too much money. Never gave us kids more than a quarter at Christmas."
Perplexed, she watched him bring the banana peel toward her arm. "You're not really gonna..." 'You are really gonna,' she mentally finished as he placed the strip of banana peel on her arm.
"Anyway, when you tape the banana peel onto your skin, something science-y in it forces the splinter to the surface. Give it a half hour or so, it should come right out, easy peasy."
Still perplexed, she watched what he was doing, occasionally glancing up with suspicion to see if there were any signs that he was messing with her. But he continued on, looking serious as anyone can be when bandaging a strip of banana peel to an arm.
When he finished, he broke the banana in half and handed her a piece. She took a bit and chewed slowly, still studying him for any signs of mischief.
"I mean, you should still have Jack take a look at it," "In case you were needin' an excuse."
Definite mischief but not in regards to the banana peel. Kate did not give much of a reaction beyond an exaggerated narrowing of her eyes as if her own reaction in itself was as much a generic teasing as she was taking his teasing comment to be. "Funny," she said without conviction while casually bringing the attention back to his method of doctoring. "If you're pranking me," she said, gesturing to her bandaged arm with the remainder of her banana, "I will get back at you," she warned with a grin that took away any real threat to that promise. She'd already gathered that this whole Grandma Myrtle method was most likely tried and true but it was just so crazy of a remedy that one could hardly pass up the opportunity to make a joke out of actually using it. "Guess we'll see how this plays out in about a half hour," she smirked, taking another bite of her banana.

*** Sawyer enters from G3 - Beach and Shore ***
On his way to the caves to meet with Jack, Sawyer decided to make a slight detour towards the camp. He had left his last package of cigarettes in his tent, and even if he was going to save it for later, he rather carried it around with him, for you never knew who was nosing around in your stuff next.
Before he reached his tent, he saw two persons standing close, one of them being Kate. Sawyer paused his steps before changing his destination once again. Nearing them, he paused anew. What the hell was that guy doing there with the banana and, more important, a roll of his bandages? Sawyer was sure it was his because ever since people had found out he was hoarding stuff like a solid businessman, they seemed to think the inside of his tent would be a frigging rummage table.
"Hey MacGyver, wanna tell me where you got that from?" Sawyer called out to Gabe as soon as he was within earshot. He didn't even want to know why he was taping parts of a banana on Kate's arm.

"Funny. ... If you're pranking me, I will get back at you. Guess we'll see how this plays out in about a half hour."
"I'm not pranking you, I swear!" Gabe assured her with a chuckle. Though he could easily understand why someone would doubt the effectiveness of this unconventional splinter removal method. He would, too, if he hadn't seen it work with his own eyes on himself and his son. "Besides, we're on an island. There's not many places I could hide from your wrath. And I'm not pranking you about the doc, either. Look, no judgment," he stated, raising his hands in neutrality. "You're both attractive, unattached, consenting adults."
"Hey MacGyver, wanna tell me where you got that from?"
Gabe winced when he heard Sawyer's voice. Dammit, busted! But seriously, where did the guy get off hoarding supplies from everyone? Especially medical supplies. "Just helpin' out a friend, Skeeter," he replied, meeting one nickname with another in reference to Sawyer's parasitical nature to the camp. "Didn't think you'd mind." He held up the offending bandages and then tossed them to the other man.

And I'm not pranking you about the doc, either. Look, no judgment," "You're both attractive, unattached, consenting adults."
Before she could jokingly add her tracking skills as another thing going against him, he'd swung back around to the topic she'd thought she'd diverted. Kate glanced up from her bandaged arm at him, leaving her expression easy going and unaffected while she attempted to convince him he might have gotten the wrong idea. A pointless endeavor, she was sure, as she and Jack's attraction was so blatantly obvious. When Jack was smiling at her and playfully flirting, she lost all common sense and fell right into flirting right back. Though they probably resembled a couple teenagers at times, Kate could find no embarrassment in what others might think because the euphoria she got off just the memory of those interactions was more than worth it. That didn't mean she wouldn't deny it when someone confronted her about it. "Appreciate the support, Dr. Ruth, but Jack and I--"
"Hey MacGyver, wanna tell me where you got that from?"
Saved from wasting her breath, Kate's eyes momentarily flicked toward Sawyer's approaching figure before she looked back at Gabe, perhaps gaining the slightest bit of satisfaction at him getting caught in Sawyer's crosshairs after having poked around in something she didn't want to face. "Busted," she said in a quiet, sing-song tone before turning along with Gabe to face Sawyer.
"Just helpin' out a friend, Skeeter," "Didn't think you'd mind."
"The medical supplies don't belong to you, Sawyer," she said exhaustingly. If they were to belong to anyone, it'd be the doctor. "Even if they did, I think I'm entitled to use them after having helped change your bandages a few times." She nodded toward his bandaged arm which, she noted, had been newly bandaged sometime since the last time she'd done it for him. Not as neat and professional looking as she and Jack made it look, but clean and efficient, nonetheless.
"You actually found another person willing to put up with you long enough to change your bandages?" she asked in a teasing tone. With a clinical eye, Kate stepped forward to check it over. She took hold of his arm and gently turned it one way, then another as she examined it, satisfied to see that it steadily stayed in place, wasn't wrapped too tight or too loose, and covered enough area. "Pretty decent job," she said, tucking a little corner of the edge that had started to work its way free.

"Just helpin' out a friend, Skeeter,""Didn't think you'd mind."
"Well, think again, Banana Joe.", Sawyer replied right away, and with that continuing their little game of meeting one nickname with another. There was no sign of amusement on his face, though. He really was done with people thinking they could just walk inside his private territory and take what they could grab.
"The medical supplies don't belong to you, Sawyer,", Kate suddenly chimed in, earning the same look from Sawyer as Gabe had. "Even if they did, I think I'm entitled to use them after having helped change your bandages a few times." He gave her a look that silently complained like YOU might, in some circumstances, but not this wannabe doc here. Then he followed her look down to his arm. "You actually found another person willing to put up with you long enough to change your bandages?"
A mocking smile appeared on his lips when she started to check over his arm.
"Pretty decent job,"
"Jelly? I know, Jack and you love to fix things up, so this must be frustrating. Where is he, by the way?" It was not that he would care about what Jack was doing. It was just time for his medication.

"Well, think again, Banana Joe."
"The medical supplies don't belong to you, Sawyer. Even if they did, I think I'm entitled to use them after having helped change your bandages a few times."
Gabe's nose wrinkled indignantly at this subsequent nickname but shook his head and went back to the important task of stocking the signal fires. He concentrated on the one nearest him as Kate moved closer to Sawyer to continue their discussion. She was much more compassionate and patient with the ignorant redneck than he would have been. He'd had enough of those kind of men in the Afghan operating bases, the weasels that hoarded the toilet paper rolls and the booze and the tabasco sauce that made the MREs edible, lording it over the already miserable enlisted men. A few more days on this god-forsaken island, and he might have to resort to his own way of dealing with the Sawyer situation.
He was so focused on arranging the branches that he barely noticed Boone run by and kneel down in the sand to talk to his sunbathing sister.
"You're never gonna' believe this," he overheard Boone say excitedly.
"You finally learned how to tie your own shoes?" Shannon shot back.
"Funny. Someone at the caves built a golf course."
"Are you high?"
"Seriously, a golf course," Boone repeated. "Apparently, Jack's playing with them right now."

"Jelly? I know, Jack and you love to fix things up, so this must be frustrating. Where is he, by the way?"
She rolled her eyes at his jibe. "The caves, I guess," she said, shrugging nonchalantly even though it did kind of weigh on her that she didn't know exactly what he was up to since he'd gone to stay at the caves, leaving them to see each other and work together far less.
Speaking of the caves, she heard someone nearby mention them and her attention was pulled to Boone and Shannon.
"...at the caves built a golf course."
"Are you high?"
"Seriously, a golf course," "Apparently, Jack's playing with them right now."
Kate turned toward them. "Jack?" she said incredulously, "Is golfing?"
Boone, still crouched by his sister, craned his head up toward Kate and answered as he got back to his feet. "That's what I hear. I don't know about you guys but I'm going to go check this out."
"Wait for me, bonehead."
And off the two went, walking excitedly at a fast pace toward Charlie and Linda and a few others who had gathered by the tree line, waiting to be led by the Pace siblings to the golf course. Normally, she was not one to shirk responsibilities but like Boone, she really wanted to check it out. It was something to do that was so out of the range of what they'd been limited to for nearly two weeks, plus Jack actually taking a moment to relax and do something for himself? She had to see this.
Kate stepped back toward her firewood partner. "I think the signal fire replenishing could wait a few hours," she said with a grin and a nod in the general direction of the golf course, assuming Gabe wanted to check it out as well.

*** Linda, Charlie and Bennett enter from the Beach ***
Linda and Charlie were becoming professional recruiters as they excitedly proclaimed the sweet escape of Hurley's golf course to many that they encountered along their path's way. Bennett still trailed behind, yet joined in closer once a few more people joined their traveling group. Linda peered around at the group that they had gathered, then turned to Charlie, "Alright, I think we've covered most of our basis...," More people moving their way in the distance distracted Linda mid sentence. Squinting through the sunlight, she made the familiar faces out once they approached closer, "Hey, it's Kate!" Linda extended a hand in the air and waved at them, their two groups meeting halfway through the camp, "Crazy how fast word travels around this camp. I'm assuming you probably heard about the golf course?" Linda asked Kate and the rest of the gang as they all stopped in front of one another.

"Crazy how fast word travels around this camp. I'm assuming you probably heard about the golf course?"
"I think the signal fire replenishing could wait a few hours."
Gabe shared Kate's skepticism of Boone's news, but soon enough Linda and her brother appeared to confirm the golf course announcement. He was prepared to tease Kate about her reason for skipping signal fire duty to attend the grand opening, but figured she just needed a break from the drudgery like the rest of them. Plus, Sawyer was the one who seemed to enjoy getting under her skin, and didn't need any more material to work with.
"Nah, I'll wait for the hype to die down," Gabe replied to Kate. He tried to project casual disinterest, but mostly he was concerned about leaving those at the camp unprotected. He shouldered a bundle of firewood and began to head further down the beach. "Gotta' put Scott and Steve to work and keep 'em out of trouble. Don't forget to have the doc take a look at that splinter," he added, pointing at the banana bandage on her arm. "Sergeant's orders."

"The caves, I guess,"
She guessed? "C'mon, Freckles, don't act like..." He stopped in the middle of the sentence when he realized that Kate's attention had turned elsewhere. So, now he wasn't interesting enough as it seemed, but as soon as there was something to fix again, Sawyer knew she'd be there. That was so screwy. Still, Jack was right out in front of that. A quiet hissing escaped him before he followed Kate's direction of view.
"...""Seriously, a golf course," "Apparently, Jack's playing with them right now."
"Jack?""Is golfing?" Kate took the words out of his mouth, although he would have asked a little differently.
"That's what I hear. I don't know about you guys but I'm going to go check this out."
"Wait for me, bonehead."
Slightly head-shaking, Sawyer watched the siblings as they ran off. Then, just as he was going to make another comment, Kate's attention was, yet again, turned elsewhere. Instead of observing her talking to the wannabe-doctor, his eyes met with other people nearby. Just perfect, now the crowd was nearing them. Maybe he should just go.
"Crazy how fast word travels around this camp. I'm assuming you probably heard about the golf course?"
As much as Sawyer hated standing in the middle of them, this time, he insisted on getting a word in because, first of all, he was just annoyed about the fact that this news seemed to be setting everybody's world on fire. "Doctor playing golf. Woo, boy howdy, now I've heard everything. What's next, cop eating a donut?"

"Nah, I'll wait for the hype to die down,"
Well, that was no fun. She'd been enjoying the distraction of his humorous, entertaining company, but to each their own. He was right, though. It would be crowded. She didn't plan to actually play herself, just stand by as an observer. Kate needed a change of scenery and a new, unexpected distraction actually of the recreational kind was impossible to pass up. Nor was the notion of witnessing Jack letting himself have fun.
"Gotta' put Scott and Steve to work and keep 'em out of trouble. Don't forget to have the doc take a look at that splinter," "Sergeant's orders."
Quick glance down to her bandaged arm, she rolled her eyes and gave him a mock solute. With the reminder of Scott and Steve, she narrowed her eyes. "Give Steve my regards," she joked in a dry, menacing tone, like a mobster issuing the secret code to have someone tortured.
"Doctor playing golf. Woo, boy howdy, now I've heard everything. What's next, cop eating a donut?"
In better spirits than she'd been in awhile, she was glad that Sawyer was able to deliver some snark that wasn't negative with the intent of taking someone down a peg. She turned away from Gabe and grinned at Sawyer as she started to walk toward the trees.
"You want to join us, you should just say," she teased, giving a nod of invitation to walk with her as she moved passed him.

"You want to join us, you should just say,"
Sawyer turned his head around and gave Kate a smirk. A smirk that, for once, was just a smirk. Without any sign of condescension or spitefulness. There even was a moment when he actually might have considered saying yes indeed, but then he sideglanced back at the only little crowd that was waiting for everyone to come with them.
"I think I'll pass on that, Freckles. Not big on crowds," Sawyer finally replied, still somewhat a smirk around the corner of his lips, yet not as strong as before. "And let's face it, the crowd's not too hot on me, either."

Well, whose fault was that? But she didn't bother bringing up the obvious as she didn't want to ruin a rare moment of a real, pleasant exchange with him.
Kate turned to face him, pausing a moment looking somewhat serious in more of a heartfelt manner rather than accusatory one. "One outcast to another, I'd think about making more of an effort."
With an encouraging grin sent his way, Kate turned back around and joined the others at the tree.

"One outcast to another, I'd think about making more of an effort."
Sawyer actually replied that grin on her face before casually throwing a "Duly noted" into her direction, yet she already had turned. Once everyone but himself had exited to watch a doctor playing golf as if that would be the greatest attraction to have around this place - maybe it was -, that grin slightly vanished from his features.
And eventually, he was alone again. Just as he liked it. As he wanted it. Or didn't he? He sighed, half-serious and half-smiling. "Ah shucks!"
And then Sawyer actually took on Kate's advice to make an effort. Surely not to make friends, but rather to place one or two bets and collar himself some stakes. Or that was what he was telling himself, at least, for that was easier than to admit that he might feel lonelier than people conceded him to be, first of all, himself. Granted, people who weren't Kate. She was different from the rest, in one way or another.
That fifty-percent seriousness vanished from his features while a smile still lingered there, turning his expression into one-hundred-percent friendliness for at least as long as it was taking him to catch up with the crowd.

***Jack and Kate enter from G3 - Beach and Shore***
Following Kate up to one of the survivor's camp areas, Jack eyeballed all of the other survivors in the area near and far. Conversations and activities seemed to be particularly normal. But to him, after seeing Sawyer disappear mysteriously into the jungle it seemed as if things were now too normal. He was sure that if Sawyer was up to no good, he would find out sooner than later. For now, they had a job to do to help keep everyone's hunger and thirst afloat. He figured they were making a brief stop to grab the bag of water bottles and any other supplies they may need for along the way.
"Do we have an extra bag or anything around to collect the fruit in?" Jack asked Kate, getting right to business as they readied themselves for the trek ahead.

Kate sat down in the sand near her shoes and socks, grabbing a towel to dry and wipe the wet sand from her feet.
"Do we have an extra bag or anything around to collect the fruit in?"
She glanced to her sides, finding the bag she usually used for fruit and pointing in the direction of it. "Right there," she said, starting to pull the socks back onto her feet. "How's your fruit supply? You think that'll be enough?" she asked with a nod toward the bag, trying to determine if they might need to scrounge up a second bag.
Kate pulled on her shoes, or rather, the shoes that she'd taken off one of the bodies, a fact she'd gotten pretty good at blocking out. She switched her attention between Jack and tightening the laces.

"Right there," "How's your fruit supply? You think that'll be enough?"
Jack followed Kate's finger in the direction that she was pointing. Shuffling his shoes in the sand, he bent over and picked the empty bag up from the ground. He inspected the size, and figured it would suffice for the job that they were about to do, "We don't have much left but we still got a few pieces to spare. This will be perfect for what we need," Jack nodded, zipping up the opened empty bag he swung it over his shoulder and turned back to Kate who was tying a pair of shoes onto her feet, "Are those new?" Jack asked Kate, tipping his glance towards the direction of her shoes. He didn't normally comment on appearances, though he was curious as he hadn't seen her wear those pair of shoes before.

"We don't have much left but we still got a few pieces to spare. This will be perfect for what we need,"
Kate nodded her acknowledgment of his answer as she tied each shoe, then got back to her feet. She started brushing the sand from her jeans, glancing over to him as he asked another question.
"Are those new?"
The topic of the shoes caused her to momentarily pause in the brushing. She'd glanced down at them, hiding whatever might have flitted across her face at the memory of obtaining the shoes. Her pausing had been the only indication that there was something unsettling regarding them. The shoes she'd arrived in hadn't been the ideal hiking or jungle trekking type and she hadn't exactly had any of her own luggage. She'd had no other options. The task had been unsettling, wandering amongst the dead, scrutinizing their feet, crouching down and loosening the ties so she could pull it from the unmoving feet, checking the size tag on the inside, luckily having eyeballed the right size on her first attempt of removing a shoe from a corpse. She remembered having glanced up, uncomfortable at the thought of someone having seen her doing something she, herself, was uncomfortable doing, despite having witnessed others doing the same to other bodies. She'd always looked away, pretending not to have noticed, as she saw everyone else do, only this time, she found Locke openly watching her as if he'd been observing from the beginning, making the whole task even more unsettling.
Kate grabbed her backpack of empty water bottles and shrugged it on, which also served as a shrug-off of the question. "I had to borrow these from someone who didn't need them anymore." Looking back up at him with a neutral expression, she flowed right into a topic change. "All set," she said, putting a grin back on her face, tilting her head toward the trees in a silent 'let's go' as she started for them.
