"I'm afraid that's easier said than done," "but you'll let me know if there's anything I can do to help."
"If there's anything, I will let you know," Sayid expressed appreciatively. He would definitely need all the help he could possibly get to get down to the bottom of things. He pulled the cloth away from his wound as the throbbing in his head died down to a dull ache. Looking up from where he sat, a kind looking fellow had reached his hand out gently to offer Sayid some water.
"This is Seb," "He had the misfortune of getting drafted to help bring water back to the beach. And he only complained for about a third of the way here."
"How do you do, Seb?" Sayid greeted him in his own collective way as he nodded towards his new acquaintance, accepting the water.
"We should get back to work,"
"I should too," Sayid said as he stood up from the boulder he sat on, noticing Jack make a rather furious exit. Whatever it was, he had a feeling that Jack could take care of himself. Feeling slightly woozy for a brief few seconds, Sayid managed to pull himself together quick as there was no more precious time to waste.
"Actually, have you seen Heidi?" "Pretty girl, about my age, long curly hair. Kate said she spent the night here, but she still wasn't at the beach this morning. That doesn't seem like her."
"Yes," Sayid started, "I saw her leave early this morning. She seemed rather in a hurry to leave. Good luck with finding your friend," Sayid bid adieu to the pair as he headed out into the jungle

"Yes, I saw her leave early this morning. She seemed rather in a hurry to leave. Good luck with finding your friend."
"Right, thanks," Gwen said as Sayid left. She nervously bit her thumbnail as she slowly walked back to the waterfall. There was the task at hand that needed to be done -- bringing fresh water back to the people on the beach. There was the task for which she had recruited Stu and Seb to help. But now she had a 'slight complication' of her own to deal with.
"If Heidi left here early this morning, she should have been back to the beach by now," she told Seb, voicing her concern aloud. "I mean, there will be hell to pay with Sarah if I come back to the beach without her. Do you think something could have happened?" She instantly realized what a ridiculous question that was. Any number of things could have happened, good or bad. And since the plane crash, it had been mostly bad. But maybe Seb would have a completely rational and acceptable explanation for Heidi's absence. Failing that, maybe he would have a completely rational and non-dangerous plan to find her, she thought as she looked up at him hopefully.

"Well, we can't risk you being on the recieving end of Sarah's wrath. That little lady's a feisty one" Seb replied, shooting Gwen a mischievous smile.
"Do you think something could have happened?"
Seb could see the concern in her eyes and knew Gwen needed reassuring. He also knew she was smart enough to not appreciate having reality sugar coated for her. "Maybe...she could have gotten sidetracked...maybe she came across someone who was lost or needed help. We should retrace her steps, follow the path she'd have taken and make sure she's alright. Do you know which way she'd have gone?"

"...We should retrace her steps, follow the path she'd have taken and make sure she's alright. Do you know which way she'd have gone?"
"Okay, let's not assume the worst," Gwen nodded, taking in his words. "I would think she took the same route we did so if we go back that way, maybe we'll see a sign of...something." Nevermind that she had no idea what they were actually looking for. It seemed the master tracker Locke was either hunting another boar or preparing one for dinner.
"We need something to mark our trail," she suggested, as she looked for a towel or a blanket or maybe a piece of tarp. "I'm so sorry, Seb. I know this isn't what you signed up for. You can stay here if you want," she offered, inwardly hoping that he would go with her but also feeling guilty for putting another person in harm's way.

"No way, I'm going with you" Seb replied, placing his hand on her shoulder. "This may not be what I signed up for but neither was ending up on this island. All we can do now we're here is try to make the best of it and if someone needs our help I'm not not going to just sit here doing nothing." Seb looked around and spotted several rocks lying around the area. "We can use these" he said, picking one up and scraping it against the side of the rock wall by the waterfall until it had a line engraved down it. "I'll carry them with me and we can place them behind us as we go. They should be heavy enough that they won't blow away or be moved if any wildlife passes through."

"Oh, nice, the island equivalent of bread crumbs," she remarked. She wasn't sure which was more reassuring, his hand on her shoulder or his resourcefulness and compassion. But lest she get caught up in a sincere moment of connection, she added, "Just remember for future reference that I did offer you an out."
She placed a couple of full water bottles in her backpack and slung it over her shoulder, then went looking for Stu. "Hey, slight change of plans," she informed him, concerned that he would start pouting about his delayed payment. "Sayid said Heidi left here this morning but she never turned up at the beach. We're going to look for her. Come along if you want. I know our deal was only to get me to the caves," she told him with a grin. Not wanting to lose any more time, she got Seb's attention and jerked her thumb toward the cave's entrance, heading out into the jungle.

Seb smiled at Gwen's directness. He wasn't used to women who knew how to take charge and now that he was faced with one he found it amusingly refreshing. "Yes ma'am" he said with a grin, scooping up a few more rocks and following her lead.

***Gwen, Seb, and Heidi enter from Mid-Jungle Area***
It hadn't been that long of a walk but at the same time, it felt like an eternity. Linda and I must have been a handful of minutes further out than shouting distance from the general area of the caves. Problem was, it had been the wrong direction, away from the trail taken back and forth between beach and caves.
I'd managed to trudge along without stopping, though I wanted to a few times. When we finally were back safe amongst the cave dwellers, I stopped working so hard at pretending everything was great and gave in a little to the exhausting.
"I need a minute. I'm just gonna sit," I said, pointing to the ledge the waterfall was pooling into before shuffling the few steps over to it. Slumping down, I leaned my back and head against the cave wall and held my empty water bottle under the waterfall. Resting and refilling at the same time. 'Master multi-tasker,' I thought, then mentally cringed at myself. Water, check, but if I didn't get food and rest soon, I wouldn't be able to stand my own company.

"I need a minute. I'm just gonna sit."
"Yes, go ahead," Gwen agreed, staying close to Heidi but trying not to hover. She surveyed the various medical equipment that Jack had gathered there but without his expertise, it was all useless to her. So she settled on a towel and brought it over to Heidi, taking a seat beside her. "I can't imagine how scary that was," she remarked, as she soaked in the towel in the cooling water and handed it to Heidi. "You two must have been out there for hours. Anything else I can get you right now?"

"I can't imagine how scary that was,"
I looked at her, not knowing how to put into words what it had been like so I let my expression do the talking. Gwen handed me the clean towel she'd soaked. "Thanks," I said, warring with really wanting to wash my face but knowing it was more important I clean the gash I'd gotten from my fall on broken glass.
"You two must have been out there for hours
"I'll take an entire day in that hole over one second of being chased again by whatever's living in the jungle," I said, eyes flicking up to the general direction of said jungle. I put my foot up on the ledge and started to carefully roll up the blood stained leg of my jeans. "Maybe it's just my overactive imagination, but I feel like falling into that hole saved our lives."
Anything else I can get you right now?"
I paused to smile at Gwen. She really was a kind-hearted, sweet person and I was glad to count her as a friend. "Food, probably an Ibuprofen," I added with the persistent dull ache in my head threatening to become a migraine. "But I can hold on until I get back to the beach." I turned my leg to an angle to better see the damage and cringed. "It's worse than it looks," I assured, then started scrubbing at the dried blood, careful around the small gash. "I took off in a hurry last night," I continued. "I didn't have time to tell anybody where I was going but my plan was to be back really early before I was missed."
Noticing Seb's attention was drawn elsewhere, I took advantage and gave Gwen a knowing smirk. "You seemed to have made a new friend," I said quietly with a subtle nod in his direction.

"You seemed to have made a new friend."
"Hmm?" she replied, following Heidi's gaze to Seb and then registering her smirk. "No, just slow down there, Cupid. Let me help you with that," she added, noticing the girl fussing with a nasty-looking gash on her leg. Gwen went back to take a look at the medical supplies and picked up a bottle of hydrogen peroxide, some cotton, a couple of bandages, and a bottle of Ibuprofen. She could at least handle this without Jack's help.
Returning to Heidi's side, she poured some peroxide on the cotton ball and gently placed it against the wound. "Apologies if this stings," she said, doing her best to clean the blood away. Once that was done, she placed a bandage on it and wrapped a length of gauze around Heidi's leg, tucking in the end to secure it. "That should do till Jack can take a look at it. And you can pocket a couple of these to take when you get some food," she added, shaking a couple of pills into Heidi's hand.
Gwen tidied up her first aid kit as her thoughts returned to the earlier subject. "And yes, Seb is terribly attractive," she admitted, "and funny and kind. When I asked him to help look for you, he didn't hesitate at all. But I'm sure he has an equally attractive and funny and kind girlfriend waiting back home. I mean, they always do." She gave a resigned sigh and pulled her knees to her chest, wrapping her arms around them. "Doesn't mean we can't enjoy the view while we're here, though," she offered, giving Heidi a knowing smile of her own. "And I'm really glad you and Linda survived your run-in with whatever's out there."

Hurley was still sorting through some of the wreckage when he noticed Seb and Gwen return with Heidi. It looked like their rescue mission had been a success. And they needed some good news right about now. "Hey, man, you guys made it back okay!" he greeted Seb. "I mean, everybody's okay, right? No crazy stuff out there?"

"Hey Hurley" Seb replied, waving at him in relief. It was nice to see another friendly face. "Heidi's a bit worse for wear but she'll be alright. Turns out her and someone called Linda fell into a hole and got stuck down there...huh" Seb frowned to himself and looked back at Hurley again. "It sounds weird saying that out loud. But we got them out alright so it's all good. No crazy monsters or Arctic animals this time."

"Huh, yeah, almost forgot about the polar bear," he remarked. "And now there's big holes in the ground? That's great. Linda...that might be Charlie's sister. I think he went down to the beach to take some water to Claire." Hurley went back to busying himself with some luggage. "Hope Jack gets back soon, man. I think Shannon's gettin' worse. She's been coughing a lot," he told Seb as he nodded toward a corner where the blonde and her brother Boone were sitting.

Seb followed Hurley's line of sight to the blonde girl. "I see what you mean. She looks worse than she did earlier. Is that Sawyer guy still hoarding her inhalers?"

"Hmm?" "No, just slow down there, Cupid. Let me help you with that,"
I got the reaction I was hoping for and grinned. “Don’t worry. I’m not a meddler. I’m more of the ‘lend an ear’ and ‘give advice when asked’ type. But I reserve the right to tease you.”
Watching Gwen pour peroxide onto cotton had me sobering in preparation for the stinging.
"Apologies if this stings,"
I winced at first but then the stinging turned into soothing. It was a relief that we had the supplies to properly clean wounds. The last thing I needed on this fun filled island was an infection. I watched quietly as Gwen finished up.
"That should do till Jack can take a look at it. And you can pocket a couple of these to take when you get some food,"
“Thanks, Nurse Gwen!” I teased though my thanks was genuine appreciation for going above and beyond. She shook out a couple pills into my hand and I was doubly grateful. “I can’t tell you how relieved I am. I thought I might have to bargain with Sawyer.” I rolled my eyes with annoyance at the thought as I pocketed the pills.
"And yes, Seb is terribly attractive," "and funny and kind. When I asked him to help look for you, he didn't hesitate at all. But I'm sure he has an equally attractive and funny and kind girlfriend waiting back home. I mean, they always do."
“There usually seems to be something. But not always,” I added in a rare, non-jaded view. I didn’t want to ruin her mood but besides that, Seb actually had that rare, nice guy vibe.
"Doesn't mean we can't enjoy the view while we're here, though,"
“Mmhmm,” I agreed. There certainly had been a ridiculous amount of good looking people on the flight.
"And I'm really glad you and Linda survived your run-in with whatever's out there."
“You’re glad?” I joked with the implication that it was me who should be the glad one. I gave a chuckle, trying to make light of something that would probably haunt me forever.
My comment was a joke I always made with my mom whenever she said she was glad I was feeling better. I felt a sudden rush of sadness but pushed it away with some joking.
“Did anyone find any comment cards in the wreckage? I’m so writing you a rave review.”

“Did anyone find any comment cards in the wreckage? I’m so writing you a rave review.”
"Oh, please do. I've really been wanting that set of steak knives they give away every quarter," Gwen urged her, accompanied by a laugh. "But really, I'm just glad I could help. I've felt rather useless now that we're no longer on the plane. I mean, I'm completely out of my depth when it comes to this sort of thing." Sure, she kept busy most of the time since the crash, but that was to stay ahead of the worry and the uncertainty. Not letting the fear catch up to her.
"...Go ahead and tease me all you want," Gwen added in a lighter tone. "It's a favorite pasttime of my friends and family. Especially since my sister just got married. My younger sister." That bloody wedding. The whole reason she was in Australia. Thus, the reason she was now stuck on this island. Even if it hadn't been all bad.
"Seb is lovely, he is. At least he seems to be," she offered, observing him in conversation with Hurley, "but I'd surely find a way to muck it up. As I always do. So, he and I are friends," she declared with a curt nod. The look she then gave Heidi was an attempt to say that she totally meant it and that was an end to the discussion. For now.
She began to fill her own water bottle in anticipation of the trek back to the beach when she noticed a bag laying beside Heidi. The fabric looked old and worn, out of place among all the luggage. "Where did you find that?" she wondered aloud.

"It's still charging. This is why you don't buy interrogation machines second hand from the Queen" Seb replied, crouching down to fill up another water bottle. He looked over at Gwen and smiled before looking back at Hurley. "I think I've been the one following the hot girl around, to be honest. But if I'm going to follow anyone around this island, I'm ok with it being her."

"What, the stewardess?," Hurley scoffed, as he began folding a shirt from a small pile of clothing. "Yeah, good luck with that. She wouldn't even give me an extra blanket on the plane without charging me. She's like...Scary Spice." As he continued to sort clothing, he asked, "So what is it you do back home?"

"But really, I'm just glad I could help. I've felt rather useless now that we're no longer on the plane. I mean, I'm completely out of my depth when it comes to this sort of thing."
"You're so not useless. You've pitched in a lot," I pointed out.
"...Go ahead and tease me all you want," Gwen added in a lighter tone. "It's a favorite pasttime of my friends and family. Especially since my sister just got married. My younger sister."
I rolled my eyes over the old fashioned notion of marriage, particularly in regards to how older family members viewed it. I could totally relate. I was so sick and tired of hearing 'you're next!' from various family members when at a wedding. Only thing that allowed me to not let it bug me was recalling a comedian's solution of repaying their relatives by saying the same to them, only at a funeral.
"Seb is lovely, he is. At least he seems to be," "but I'd surely find a way to muck it up. As I always do. So, he and I are friends,"
I could also kind of relate to that as well and though I badly wanted to answer the 'friends' comment with 'riiiiiiight,', I held my tongue and just gave a little shrug.
"Where did you find that?"
I followed Gwen's gaze down to the old sack. "Oh that?" I said, lowering my leg from the ledge and leaning down to place the bag in its spot. I started to unknot it. "Linda and I found it in that hole. It's really, really old stuff. Here, check this thing out," I said, quickly rummaging then carefully holding out the old leather bound journal. "Try to avoid touching the pages as much as possible. Oils from skin and all that science-y mumbo jumbo." Obviously, the extent of my knowledge came from movies and archeological dig specials on TV.

"Linda and I found it in that hole. It's really, really old stuff. Here, check this thing out ... Try to avoid touching the pages as much as possible. Oils from skin and all that science-y mumbo jumbo."
Gwen nodded in understanding, holding the seemingly ancient book with great care and gently turning its pages. "Well, isn't this interesting?" she remarked. "Not any language I recognize, apart from the hieroglyphics. And we're rather a long way from ancient Egypt. Many centuries and many miles away from it, actually."
Her brow furrowed in confusion as she flipped a few more pages, studying the words or symbols and illustrations. "How is this possible?" she wondered aloud, looking back up at Heidi. "This book didn't just appear. It must mean someone else is on this island. Or was, at least." Gwen wasn't sure if that was a comforting or disturbing thought. "Curiouser and curiouser," she concluded, handing the book back to Heidi.

"Oh, there were other people on the island!" I pointed toward a cave as I relayed the cave news I'd heard last night. "They found two really old bodies in that cave. We refer to them as Adam and Eve." I looked thoughtful a moment as I placed the book back in the sack. "I wonder if this stuff belonged to one of them?"
I really had no idea how to gauge how old bodies or things were so I had no idea if my guess was worth considering or completely ridiculous, so I added a shrug.
Gwen's comment of someone else 'is' on the island didn't really stick in my mind. This place just felt so remote and undiscovered. Why else wouldn't a plane or boat have gone by? And we'd been here nine days now. Surely we'd have come across any natives or evidence of them by now. I didn't bother voicing any of that because it seemed too outlandish.
"It's starting to get late. We should get back to the beach. Or I should," I quickly interjected, suddenly unsure of what Gwen's plan was, but I didn't want her to feel obligated to join me.

Wait, they had found bodies in the cave? This was new information. And Heidi's guess that the book and the bag might have belonged to some earlier occupants of this island would make sense. She opened her mouth to say something but thought better of it. Such puzzles were probably better pondered on a full stomach and a sharp mind.
"It's starting to get late. We should get back to the beach. Or I should."
"Sure," Gwen agreed. "I know Sarah will be happy to see you. And likely so will Jasmine. I'll just grab Seb and we'll get going ... not in that way," she added hastily, lest Heidi decide to make an innuendo out of it. She returned the medical supplies to where she'd found them and then approached Seb and Hurley.
"Hey," she greeted with a polite smile to both. Hurley had a look that made her think she might be interrupting something, but she figured it wasn't something she needed to know. "Heidi is feeling better so we should start heading back to the beach."

"Heidi is feeling better so we should start heading back to the beach."

"Heidi is feeling better so we should start heading back to the beach."

Gwen still felt like she was missing something, but decided to let the boys have their inside joke. "Look, I promise I won't volunteer you for anything else once we get back. At least not for the rest of the day," she asserted sweetly, giving him a couple of pats on the chest before returning to Heidi. She shrugged back into her backpack and slung one of the duffle bags over her shoulder. "Alright, missy, up ya' go," she prompted, holding her hand out to Heidi.

I gave her a tired smile and gratefully took her hand, letting her help me up. Exhaustion and hunger had me swaying a little but I steadied myself.
Exhausted or not, I wanted to be useful. "I can take one of these, too," I said, looking over the bags of filled water bottles ready for transportation and settling on a backpack that looked less weighty than another duffel that sat beside it.
"Who all's going? Hopefully someone with a better sense of direction than me," I joked, settling the straps of the backpack on my shoulders then started to adjust them comfortably, adding with dry humor, "Which would basically be any other living thing here on Jurassic Island."
