"It's a miracle you're alive, glad you found us. Are you alone? Or are there others?"
"Well, he's a doctor of archaeology. I'm sure he's been in far more desolate environments," Gwen explained, perhaps also trying to rationalize the new arrival's healthy appearance and attitude given the circumstances. "If you want, I can take him back to the caves, get him some food and water, and some aloe for the sunburn. You can join us once you've finished your round," she offered Jack. Sure, it was still the first day of her nursing 'job' but she felt certain she could handle that much.

Kate watched the new face join their group with his casually chatting in slight bewilderment. It wasn't so much the appearance of a new face as it was the chipper personality that had a feeling of something strange pulling at her attention. Even if that was his natural setting, how could he have kept it intact after seemingly being on his own for 13 days? Or at least she assumed as such since there was nobody else with him. Alone or not, this place was full of scary, inexplicable things. People had only just started to accept their circumstances and were only just taking their first, cautious steps toward finding their way back to whatever their own natural settings had been before the crash.
"It's a miracle you're alive, glad you found us. Are you alone? Or are there others?"
Kate was just wondering the same thing, so she was intently listening for his answer when Sawyer discreetly piped in for the ears of the three who kept back.
"Am I the only one who thinks there's somethin' shady about it?"
Shady people always assumed shadiness in others. No surprised Sawyer sensed that and of course Kate had also had a gut reaction of something shady at the start. But that had become her natural, initial reaction toward any new face. She wasn't surprised that it seemed to be Sawyer's as well. They had a similar vibe about them, something that spoke of having been living a life that was not the norm. It was definitely one of the factors she felt that drew them to each other. People wanted to be understood; to be around people who knew what it was like to live the kind of life they lived. But unlike Sawyer, Kate had started to learn to stop letting her past control her view of the world and other people in it. Meeting Kevin had helped her take that step, despite the heartbreaking way it had ended. Though she may have that initial wariness, she could now take a step back and assess things from clearer eyes. Not everyone was out to get you.
"Some random dude who says he's one of us, emerging from the jungle with barely a scratch?" "Not gonna lie, man, but it's sketchy," "I think it's best if we keep an eye on him. I'm just not sure about his intentions,"
And with that, Kate could feel Bennett stepping away before she managed to pull her eyes from their newest arrival to glance back at Bennett's retreating form. With his words, an inkling of wariness was starting to form. Problem was, it wasn't toward their newest arrival.
"You think he might be working for the polar bears? Or maybe the monster," she dryly wondered aloud to now the only person within earshot. Kate spared Sawyer a glance before observing the goings on again. She'd addressed the only two threats they'd come up against and now addressed Bennett's accusations. "The plane broke apart in mid air. Several people went flying out." Since she hadn't lost consciousness, she's unfortunately witnessed that happening and even after she'd tightly shut her eyes, she could still hear the screams of others rush by her as they were also ripped from the plane. "Practically everyone who survived barely had a scratch," she reminded him.
Kate discreetly glanced back in the direction Bennett had disappeared to, purposefully waiting a beat in case Bennett was observing from within the trees. She kept a casual posture and the same expression of leeriness on her features for that same reason, keeping her glances going from Sawyer to the new guy as if the new guy was still the topic of their conversation. "Putting that much effort into instantly vilifying some guy who's just shown up, now that, I find sketchy."

"It's a miracle you're alive, glad you found us. Are you alone? Or are there others?"
Derek hoped that the other hadn't noticed the short pause of hesitation on his features before Gwen suddenly intervened. He was really glad she did because, for now, at least, Derek preferred to drop that topic.
"Well, he's a doctor of archaeology. I'm sure he's been in far more desolate environments,""If you want, I can take him back to the caves, get him some food and water, and some aloe for the sunburn. You can join us once you've finished your round,"
At the sunburn comment, Derek started to peer down at himself. He was actually the tanned type and barely got sunburns, although he wasn't used to spending so much time outside in the sun for a while before he got here. But instead of questioning, he decided to just appreciate the fact that Gwen wanted to take him under her wing while everyone else around was still eying him rather leery.
"Thank you, that's very nice of you," he said to Gwen, ignoring their leader's questions. He just hoped that didn't come off like he was trying to escape, even though that was what he was actually doing here. But one who spent so much time alone in the jungle surely was allowed to appreciate getting taken care of before the interviews would start, right? Derek gave Gwen a nod as if to silently say that he was ready whenever she was.

"Some random dude who says he's one of us, emerging from the jungle with barely a scratch?""Not gonna lie, man, but it's sketchy,""I think it's best if we keep an eye on him. I'm just not sure about his intentions,"
Sawyer never liked people who broke into a conversation without getting asked, although, or maybe even because that was one of his own bad habits. There was no pride with two alphas in it. Or maybe it was just the way he had. As if he was hoping to make friends with them, Kate and himself. Sawyer couldn't remember having placed an ad for striking up new friendships. Besides, so far, nobody but Kate was even interested in talking to him at all. Before either of them could have reacted to Bennett's comment, though, he made his escape. With a slight shake of his head, Sawyer turned his attention back to Kate.
"You think he might be working for the polar bears? Or maybe the monster,""The plane broke apart in mid air. Several people went flying out.""Practically everyone who survived barely had a scratch,"
Sometimes Sawyer had a feeling that Kate just didn't like to agree with him. Was she worried that could make her become part of team misfit? Well, she was already anyway. Maybe not as their top member like he was, but surely next on the list.
"Putting that much effort into instantly vilifying some guy who's just shown up, now that, I find sketchy," Kate suddenly added after a short pause.
Sawyer threw one look back in the direction Bennett had disappeared to before turning his gaze back at Kate. Despite the fact that he was actually on the same page with her there, he just shrugged that off and instead closed with a remark about the new arrival. "Well, whatever. I, at least, ain't gonna give my share of the pie," Sawyer said, making it sound like anyone ever would have gotten something from him in the first place. Then he turned his back towards Kate and also everyone else, disappearing in the same direction as Bennett before.

Jack looked from the newcomer to Gwen, who was gracious enough to offer to take on the roll of escorting him to the camp at the caves. Fair points were made, however Jack knew that he needed to know the details of this man's journey. Right now, grace was needed and he would not press the shaken archaeologist any further and knew that the time for questions would come later. "Take Linda with you, the more we travel together through the jungle right now the better. We'll finish and meet you there, thanks Gwen," Jack gave Gwen a nod of approval. Linda had come forward at the mention of her name and she was in agreement with Jack's plea of safety. Jack turned away from the trio to take his final shot to end the game, his mind half in thought of how he was to handle this mysterious guest.

"Well, whatever. I, at least, ain't gonna give my share of the pie,"
Kate heaved a sigh and sent a roll of her eyes at Sawyer's back. "Why start now?" she muttered to herself dryly under her breath.
While Bennett and Sawyer seemed to have already made up their mind about their newest member, Kate was keeping hers open. She watched patiently as Jack gave instructions, seeming to slowly adapt to the role of leader everyone had forced upon him, and once Gwen, Linda, and their new arrival started heading her way on their route to the caves, Kate made eye contact and smiled in greeting. An indication that she was getting ready to address them when they reached her in a few steps, though standing more to the side rather than in their path to indicate that she wouldn't keep them long.
"Hey, I'm Kate. Part of the beach camp, though I trek over to the caves often to refill the water bottles, so you'll be seeing me around." She was assuming he'd choose to settle at the caves as he strangely already had a connection to one of the people who'd settled there. Naturally, people gravitated toward what made them comfortable, and that usually meant familiar. At the caves, he'd have his already existing connection with Gwen whereas at the beach, he didn't know anyone.

"Just doing my job, doctor," she said with a smile and an affirming nod. "But you owe me a rematch." She let him get back to the game as she rejoined Derek and Linda to retrace the path back to the caves.
"Hey, I'm Kate. Part of the beach camp, though I trek over to the caves often to refill the water bottles, so you'll be seeing me around."
"Kate's been a huge help with collecting supplies -- water, food, firewood," Gwen informed their new addition. Also with burying the dead from the cockpit, though she would leave that gratitude acknowledged but unsaid at this time. "Kate, this is Derek."

Derek was glad when the leader of this group let him off the hook, holding off on the questioning until later; Until Derek would have been able to come up with better answers. He was not the lying type and surely had no reason to do so in the first place, yet, lately, people had become so leery, back at the other camp, same as here. He had seen it in some of the faces around, although ignored, even approached those with no more than a friendly smile.
Just when the two ladies started to escort him to another place, someone else talked to them, rather in passing, though. Derek, however, was a social guy and always liked to meet new people, despite the circumstances.
"Hey, I'm Kate. Part of the beach camp, though I trek over to the caves often to refill the water bottles, so you'll be seeing me around."
And just when Derek was going to answer her, this time for himself, Gwen intervened once again. He smiled at her. She was cute for doing so. Well, cute in general.
"Kate's been a huge help with collecting supplies -- water, food, firewood,""Kate, this is Derek."
"Hello Kate," Derek then spoke up as well, stopping his steps and reaching out a hand to her, after all. There had got to be time for that. "It's a pleasure to meet you," he added slowly spoken and with a smile, being the charming guy as usual.

Not used to such praising, Kate found herself mildly uncomfortable in not knowing how to respond or react. She shifted her weight to her other leg as the only tell of that fact but maintained her smile, focusing on the introduction part of things.
“Glad you found your way to us,” she said as she shook his hand. Kate offered reassurance and a return of Gwen’s complimentary truth. “You’re in good hands,” she said, nodding toward Gwen and Linda. “I’ll let you guys get on your way to settling Derek in. See you around.”
With a small wave and continued smile, Kate turned then tucked her hands into her pockets as she rejoined the other spectators, watching the players cycle through the last of their turns. Or rather, watching Jack then chatting with him while oblivious of the other spectators and players on their turns.
