Summary: Negan and Lucille became a couple and now have to face their first problems already sooner than they would have believed when Lucille finds out that he is a teacher at the university she is studying at. While Lucille is all worried about someone could find out, Negan seems to make it his task to let that fact turn their relationship into an adventure right from the beginning.
Prolog
The dreamy girl and the sassy man were dating now for already two weeks, both still not being aware of the fact that they would meet a problem real soon - a problem for one of them while no more than a funny risk for the other. Right, the one facing it as a problem would be the girl, Lucille, while the one almost looking forward to it as an exciting adventure to take, would be the man, Negan.
Of course, Lucille had been aware of the fact that the man she fell in love with probably was half her age older than she was. But how should she have known that this man was going to the same college as she did - as a teacher.
And so it came the day when the two lovebirds started to get to know each other better.
"So, you're kind of a professional sportsman?", Lucille asked with curiosity, pointing at the baseball bat decorating his living room. Among other interesting stuff, she had to add inwardly. He seemed to have a thing for motorbikes as well. Sports and motorbikes, not exactly interests of hers, but a couple didn't need to share each of their interests, did it?
"No." Negan answered with a slightly embarrassed smile.
And yet again, once she got to see that smile, she had almost forgotten the topic of their conversation. This sassy man, titling himself an asshole, was just so not in her presence. If she hadn't seen him acting quite like one with that woman who had ditched him on the first evening of their meeting, Lucille even might not have gotten the slightest idea to connect such a description with the smirking person in front of her. It still felt strange to think there actually was this connection.
Eventually, Negan's voice roused her from her thoughts. "I'm a gym teacher."
"A teacher.", she repeated a little surprised yet not too distraught over that fact at this point. Well, as long as he wasn't teaching at the university she was a student of, everything was fine. That was what she thought, actually more meant as a joke, until Negan went on and taught her better, in the truest sense of the word.
"Yah, though sometimes I get the feeling people don't call it really teaching when that is what you teach at a university." The following hissing sound from him got almost drowned out by Lucille's sudden shriek, not loud in general, but loud enough to draw Negan's attention and to answer it with a puzzled expression.
"The University of Chapel Hill?" she finally regained her voice. A question, actually superfluous, as that was the only university in the close area. For a moment, she closed her eyes, inwardly praying for him to answer in the negative, as highly improbable as that was.
Instead of an answer though, Negan took pleasure in saying nothing at all and watching her with a smirk of amusement, until she would open her eyes again. And so she eventually did, giving him a disbelieving, though still slightly hopeful expression, only to see her hope collapsing at once one sentence later.
"You are one of these diligent well-behaved students, probably studying soc or history, while I am the bad teacher, waiting to keep you in after school, isn't it?", Negan suddenly stated in his usual manner of doing jokes.
"Do you think this is funny?" Lucille replied to the almost rapturous smile on his face while throwing her hands up in despair.
"Actually, yes.", he responded, the smile not dying down, not a bit. In fact, it was even growing.
"Oh my gosh!" Lucille suddenly startled up once again, her hands now covered around her face. And yet again did she get no reaction from Negan. Not more than the remaining amusement sent her way. "I know who you are!"
At that, his expression changed from highly amused to just amused with a little bit of questioning, while he leaned back and put his head askew at the same time before he slowly asked: "And who am I?"
"You are this gym teacher everyone is talking about!", Lucille burst out, still in kind of a shock.
"Okay, timeout.", he intervened at last, not harsh but defining.
For a little moment, Lucille had almost broken out of her shock because of the way he so suddenly had silenced her. This was pretty much gym teacher-like, she thought with an inner chuckle. It was a wonder that he didn't make use of this sign of timeout she had seen trainers using for sportsmen.
"First of all, calm down, love." And when she thought he was finally playing her for keeps, his facial features changed into a mischievous grin once again. "So, You're telling me you co-eds go wild for me? Shi-it...", Negan uttered with an elongated version of one of his favorite words, still overly amused.
"Oh, seriously?" was everything Lucille came up with. She really adored this man and even his humor, but right this moment was she a little bit unnerved about it, calming herself down again with one deep breath very quickly, though. "So, what are we going to do about this?"
"About what?"
She gave him an admonitory look, this time with a hint of amusement herself.
"I'm still the same, or am I not?" he finally pointed out with his arms spread. "So are you."
"Well, you're right.", Lucille eventually agreed and even had to chuckle about this whole conversation herself now. "I was just... I don't know. I was just worried. Well, I AM worried."
"I know.", he interrupted and came closer to enfold her into his arms all of a sudden. By then, the mischievous grin had died down to no more than a loving smile. "And that's what I love about you, Lucille. You do worry, and you do care. That's sweet. But let me tell you: we can do this. Okay?"
Negan gave her one of his warm and comfortable very tight hugs, which was the reason for actually making her ease again at once, and even filled her eyes with tears all of a sudden.
"Hey, what is it?" Negan suddenly asked visibly worried, as he released her for the moment of checking on the sobbing he thought to have heard. And he hadn't misheard. "Did I say anything wrong?"
"No." she managed to produce amidst tears, before giving him a smile to assure these were tears of joy - a smile, that did grow to one of the widest she had ever felt on her face, once it was returned with one of his. "Nothing wrong. Not at all... I just... I'm just glad we have met."
"That's my Cheshire cat.", Negan said as dimples were forming around his cheeks. Then he covered her into his arms once again, even warmer and more comfortable than before, letting Lucille's heart beat a melody she had learned only since this day in the restaurant two weeks ago. To be here with Negan and to hear him saying these kind words was making this day another perfect one in a sequence of a lot of perfect days this last couple of weeks, even though she inwardly was still worrying. But, yes, he was right. They could do this. They could go through whatever problems might come.
"It's pedagogy by the way.", she eventually rectified his former guess about her subject, before wordless indulging in their embrace again, getting no more than another stroking over her hair and a soft chuckle as a reply. And even if Lucille couldn't see it right now, did the mere imagination of the smile on his lips make grow hers. Maybe it was too early to say it out loud, but she already was deep in love with this man. Yes, she loved him.
So, why should she worry?
If Lucille had been fully aware of the infinity of Negan's provocative demeanor already that day, she might have annulled her attitude about why she should worry, because the next few weeks would not only make her worry about his tutor licensure along with both of their reputation but also about the consequences regarding this relationship in general. She really was willed to take every obstacle that might get into their way, but was he as well? At least did he seem to take every risk for it. An act she probably had seen as a proof of love, if she wouldn't become all too busy with worrying about his next new fancy.
Dating a teacher might not be a piece of cake, but dating Negan was even kind of a challenge, especially for a rather inconspicuous person like Lucille.
And so this challenge was meant to begin already the next day.
