Wash watched all this taking place, deciding that he would take this time to just stay back and have something to eat. He missed the thing called real food, as real as it could get. He looked over to River and smiled, "River, want some?" He held out some food for her, not sure what was going on but hoping him including her would help with whatever was going on.

"She just risked her life to help save your ship, Mal," Cav pointed out. "That should buy her some cred." He was trying very hard to keep his eyes off Inara but he was failing miserably. That likely wouldn't improve Mal's current mood.
Of course there was one thing he could do that would keep his eyes off the most beautiful woman in the room but it was also likely to not improve Mal's mood but technically it was the lesser of two evils. He turned his eyes fully onto Mal. "And it's hard to take your doctor for a little ride, seeing as how we left my ship planet-side when you lifted off to rescue Wash. We are going back for the Cobblestone Road, are we not?"

"Perhaps it would be best we grant her request of privacy,"
The Companion was indeed as gifted as they say with the way she could read a person, especially given the fact she seemed a little out of sorts. Wendy thought she'd been doing a decent job of hiding her pain. She appreciated Inara's attempt to get her the privacy she had requested.
"Dude, being a doctor seems to make the chicks go crazy."
"Jayne... Go be in your bunk."
Based on the information collected on Jayne Cobb, a remark like that didn't surprise her, nor did it seem to phase anyone else, particularly the Captain who didn't miss a beat with putting him in his place.
During all this, Wendy's concentration had mostly remained on River, drawn to their shared circumstance. She felt the panic getting the better of River as the moods of the room boxed her in tighter and tighter, suffocating her. Wendy had casually taken the few steps to River just as she'd reached out in a failed attempt for the door. She took hold of River's outstretched hand, leading her to a chair as Mal shot down Inara's request on her behalf.
"And what exactly am I supposed to do, let them take the doctor for a little drive too? We still don't know what this business is all about and there are no secrets here. Well, there is but not usually with strangers. Except what I think is necessary... Important thing is my ship, my rules."
Wendy half listened as she looked River in the eye, squeezing her hand and once again projecting her old memories to River by conjuring them up in her own mind. "Concentrate on the clouds. Ignore everything else around you," she echoed in her mind. She did her best to maintain split concentration between this and the Captain as he addressed her once again, thankful when Wash attempted to help distract River with an offer of food.
"If your need is genuine and harmless, it do a might bit towards trusting you if you give me something to go on. 'n if you have anything geared towards melting anyone's brain you might want to turn that over now too."
"She just risked her life to help save your ship, Mal," "That should buy her some cred." "And it's hard to take your doctor for a little ride, seeing as how we left my ship planet-side when you lifted off to rescue Wash. We are going back for the Cobblestone Road, are we not?"
"I'm not requesting permission to take Dr. Tam off board," she interjected, hoping to bring the attention back to herself before the rising tension between the two men got any worse. "Quite the opposite. I'm asking permission to remain aboard while the doctor does his thing. As of today, I have no place, no possessions. What you see," she pulled her sidearm free, offering it to the captain, "is all I got. My need is genuine but as far as harmless," she took a moment to mull that over, "there may be a slight risk in harboring me though with my time nearly run out," she shrugged, "they may not even bother tracking me down. Likely I won't be burdening you and yours for much past a week. Two if I'm lucky."
She spoke of her own mortality with casual indifference. She didn't want to be pitied or to give them cause to believe she was expecting her fate to change, only for a chance to try. Deep down, she was afraid but she buried it under the weight of reality. What good would it do her to spend whatever time she had left crying or mourning? No, that was not how she was going to leave this world. She would leave it fighting.

Mal
"She just risked her life to help save your ship, Mal, that should buy her some cred." Cavanaugh turned his eyes fully onto the Captain. "And it's hard to take your doctor for a little ride, seeing as how we left my ship planet-side when you lifted off to rescue Wash. We are going back for the Cobblestone Road, are we not?"
"If that's what you want, we can drop you off at your ship and send you both on your merry." Mal didn't even know why he was getting so irritated with the current events. It didn't help that he was getting an awful lot of demands and requests and it seemed like River was on the verge of another one of her outbursts.
Before things could get too much worse Wendy spoke up. "I'm not requesting permission to take Dr. Tam off board, quite the opposite. I'm asking permission to remain aboard while the doctor does his thing. As of today, I have no place, no possessions. What you see, is all I got. My need is genuine but as far as harmless," She pulled her sidearm free, offering it to Reynolds. "There may be a slight risk in harboring me though with my time nearly run out, they may not even bother tracking me down. Likely I won't be burdening you and yours for much past a week. Two if I'm lucky."
... Well that was not what he was expecting to hear. "Are you telling me you're here because your dying? You don't look that worse for wear... Wait, you're not contagious are you?" There was a subconscious effort to lower his respiratory intake, but when he caught himself he let out a sigh. If that were the case he doubted her companion would have been flying with her unprotected in a ship as small as his.
"Nevermind, the Doc is probably napping down in the Infirmary as we speak. If you locked the door, your ship should be fine." He turned down the offer of the firearm, no sense in taking it if Cav had his and Inara would vouch for him Mal was sure... "You can tell me what in the sphincter of hell that was we just went up against on the way, shall we?" He didn't want to waste any time if this woman really needed help. That was something he just couldn't do. As he walked to the hatch he turned back as he waited. "Wash, set her down someplace quiet while we sort things out."

CAVANAUGH
"Put her down by Bay 6," Cavanaugh said. "That's where the Cobblestone Road is docked." Now that he was on the Serenity again, all he wanted to do was get off her and get back to his own ship. Wendy had been delivered to her destination and if Simon Tam could save her, he'd eventually see her again. Their universe was too small to avoid each other, even in the vastness of the black.
He didn't know why he kept putting himself in places where he would be near Inara either. That was a recipe for disaster. He couldn't afford to buy her services, even if there was any way he would consider the idea. It just felt wrong. It was typical of him. He'd set his sights on a woman so far out of his league, so far out of range that it was laughable or at least it would be for anyone other than him.
They'd shared one dance, after he'd won a bet with her. He'd given her a foot rub, after he'd knocked her down to get her out of the line of fire. Did she actually feel anything for him or was it all in his head? In the long run did it even matter?

River didn't want to look up. All she wanted was out of here. It was crowded. More and more people came into the room and took the air to breathe. River started to gasp, as she realized that something still was touching her hand. And once she realized, it seemed to somehow calm her down.
Without any resistence River let the hand lead her to a chair. The fingers of her free hand stretched out for the wooden armrest, before she took a seat in it. The voices continued in the background, though nothing instead of Blah Blah reached her ears. "Concentrate on the clouds. Ignore everything else around you," River closed her eyes, somehow again saw that grassland with the lightblue sky full of fluffy clouds from before.
"River, want some?"
A childish smile appeared on her face, when she heard that question. Yes, she wanted some of it. It just looked like this thingy tasting like a rainbow explosion in your stomach, she hasn't seen in ages. How was it called... cotton candy? River stretched out her hand to grab the clouds above, now even didn't hear the voices in the background anymore. She just wished her brother would be with her now to see it.

"Jayne... Go be in your bunk."
Jayne hold the smile for a moment, as he suddenly realized the meaning of the Captain's words. Tonelessly the smile died down. It was not that Jayne would have felt embarrassed or something like that, but he knew when it was time to keep silence... well, sometimes. Actually... it occurred at times.
While the others were discussing, Jayne had a look at River, who seemed to went out of her mind... again. And as Mal started to give instructions, at least to Wash, he turned back around, ready for anything to do for his part.

"Are you telling me you're here because your dying?"
Her stony expression answered his question.
"You don't look that worse for wear... Wait, you're not contagious are you?"
She quirked an eyebrow in an unspoken 'Seriously?' But simply said, "No."
"Nevermind, the Doc is probably napping down in the Infirmary as we speak. If you locked the door, your ship should be fine."
She holstered her gun and paused as something in the room distracted her. Someone not on the same plain of emotions or level of mood that fit the current topic and general tone.
"You can tell me what in the sphincter of hell that was we just went up against on the way, shall we?" "Wash, set her down someplace quiet while we sort things out."
"Put her down by Bay 6," "That's where the Cobblestone Road is docked."
"Actually," she called out to Mal before he could step through the hatch. "I believe we're dealing with two separate events. Seems you and your crew have had a busy day, Captain." Wendy's eyes went to the engineer who's thoughts had become increasingly frantic and worrisome but unlike the others, she wasn't thinking about what was currently being discussed. She had a feeling this would be more important. Her story could wait and frankly, she felt as if she'd fall apart if she did not give herself a break. So Wendy did her thing, piling on as much information to thoroughly divert the Captain and crew's interest as much as possible.
Her eyes still on Kaylee, Wendy read her. "Ms. Frye and Ms. Serra were attacked. Seems your engineer has found something that might give you the answer on the who and the why and she's been wanting to talk to you about it something fierce." Someone had actually attempted to kidnap a Companion? Wendy shook her head. "You're dealing with someone either very stupid or possibly a lunatic." Wendy looked back at Mal. It didn't take a reader to know that this earlier, more personal attack took precedence. Wendy took hold of River's hand, still outstretched as she reached for those clouds, to pull her away from the imagery and get her attention. "River can introduce me to her brother and I'll fill you in later," she promised the Captain and quickly left the room with River before they could finish processing.

Inara watched River and Wendy disappear from the room. That explained why Wendy had taken right to River, lingering by her like a mother hen and how she could calm her with such ease. "She's like River. She's a reader." That had her shift uncomfortably as she tried to recall what thoughts had been on her mind.
BOOK
"I wondered about that. There seemed to be a few unspoken exchanges between them. Wendy seems to have hers under control." He recalled the reason for Wendy being here and his brow creased with worry. "For the most part." Book suddenly made another connection. When they had relayed to him what had happened on Ariel, the men after River had also been wearing blue gloves and the men who had shown up today to once again get their blue hands on River knew Wendy. Book made a mental note to bring this to the Captain's attention later, if he hadn't already made it himself.
INARA
Inara shifted the conversation back. "Mei-mei," she said, placing a hand on Kaylee's arm, "what did you find?"

Kaylee hadn't wanted to interrupt. By the time they got to the galley, things were underway and really, maybe there weren't any need to be worried so she kept quiet waiting for a break in the action. But tried as she might to focus on the talk between the Captain and their new passengers, she was having an increasingly hard time focusing on anything but the events of the morning.
She'd taken a pretty good knock to the head, could be she did just slip that disc in her pocket and forgot about it. 'Cept she couldn't think of any reason why she'd do that. No, that reasoning didn't set well with her. She was sure that it weren't there when they left Serenity.
They'd gone right to the antique shop, so she didn't buy it while she was out. That just left one possibility.
Someone'd put it there while she was out cold.
Probably the same someone who'd drugged Inara.
A chill went down her spine at the thought. Suddenly what seemed like just a random attack- after all, who'd be feng le enough to attack a known Companion- was becoming much more sinisterly organized. And all the answers were in her pocket.
So deep in thought, it took Kaylee a moment to realize that all eyes were currently on her.
"Ms. Frye and Ms. Serra were attacked. Seems your engineer has found something that might give you the answer on the who and the why and she's been wanting to talk to you about it something fierce."
Her own eyes widened. How did she know that? Kaylee didn't tell a soul. Though the mysterious woman didn't stick around to explain, Inara had already caught on. "She's like River. She's a reader."
It made Kaylee all sorts of uncomfortable to think about someone digging around in her mind like that. There weren't any time to dwell on it though as Inara put a hand on her arm, bringing the focus back. "Mei-mei," "what did you find?"
She pulled the disc out, holding it out towards Mal. "It was in my pocket. Could be nothin'...." But her tone said otherwise.

Mal
"She's like River. She's a reader." It especially didn't bother the Captain now that Wendy had walked past him with River. Two readers... Best they be somewhere away from him now. He had a lot to think about and it was his business. As if to compound that thought Reynolds turned his attention to Inara. "Mei-mei, what did you find?" He opened his mouth but the words just fell short of crossing that threshold.
With a quick look to Book, Mal interjected a few quick 'requests', "Shepherd could you keep an eye on them below? Need a neutral party I can count on." Looking over at Jayne expecting to see that usual hurt expression he continued, "Jayne you stay with me. Monty you too. Wash... the bridge." Zoe left with the pilot, not to his surprise, as the Captain turned to Kaylee. The mechanic pulled a data disk from her pocket, "It was in my pocket. Could be nothin'...." His expression softened. "I'll take care of this, anything you can remember about who did this... You make sure and tell me when you're feeling up to it. Don't push yourself. You and Inara go with the preacher and see the doc, okay?"
Deliberately not making eye contact with the companion Mal knew Book would be the good mediator. He could employ the soft touch. Whoever did this to them would have been muscle. If that disk contained anything important, best to keep it on a need to know basis. "Let's go." Reynolds barked and started to head for the other hatch leading to the bridge. As he passed Cav he inclined his head, "Care to join us, Captain?" He kept it cordial but without the hint of an option. They all needed to talk.

"Care to join us, Captain?"
Cav nodded. "I could be persuaded," he said, rising. Mal's tone indicated that it was less request and more demand but the Serenity was Mal's ship and on this ship Mal's word was law. His response suggested that he had the option of refusing but they all knew that it wasn't the case.
He was a little saddened that he hadn't had a chance to spend a moment with Inara but there was a possibility that he'd have a chance later. It was a slim chance but he'd gambled his life on smaller chances. He followed Mal onto the bridge.

"Jayne you stay with me. Monty you too. Wash... the bridge.", the Captain suddenly addressed him, when Jayne still had a shocked look on his face due to Inara's statement, that now they had two people on board, who were out of it. At least the other chick didn't seem to be as crazy as River.
"Sure.", Jayne answered very terse. When Mal asked the other Captain to join them either, he made a less excited face, but didn't say anything. He can talk to Mal in private later, though the Captain probably won't be willing to hear his opinion about it anyway.

Mal knew better than to give her orders. Inara's eyes narrowed but her glare was wasted as he didn't spare her a glance. After the others disappeared from the room, Inara turned to Kaylee.
"You two can go along to the infirmary without me. I'm going to see if that disk has any relation to what happened today." Still worked up, Inara stood quickly, forgotting to take her still woozy condition into consideration. Book steadied her. "Thank you, Shepherd," she said sheepishly.
Composing herself, she took a calming breath as she headed out, keeping her pace slow and steady.

***Zoe enters after doing her rounds***
As soon as Zoe was done with her rounds, she took advantage of the rest of the rare calm to seek out Wash. If he wasn't on the bridge, chances were he was in the dining area. Luck was on her side. Not only did she find him but she found him alone. She gave him a flirty smile and approached.
"Hello, husband," she said, distracting him with a quick kiss before sneaking a bite of the Fruity Oaty Bar he'd had held up and had been about to take a bite of. She chewed, giving him a sly smile.

That smile, that was a scheming smile. "Hello, husband," He grinned and leaned against the counter.
"Hello, wife," He loved this woman, every time he saw her, she took his breath away. He leaned into the kiss but before he knew it, she was gone and a bite was missing from his Fruity oaty bar. "I do believe as my wife you own half of everything I own, including this bar." He took another bite before extending the rest out to her.
He could use some wife time, he wondered if she had some free time?

Zoe was constantly reminded of how lucky she was by the little things he said or did. Like right now. Her sly smile softened into one of love. She kept her eyes on him, pulling the candy bar from his hand and placing it on the counter, then put her arms around his neck as she leaned against him. "I'm suddenly craving something else," she said before kissing him sweetly.
She attempted to hold back from getting too carried away, though it would already be such a shame to stop. "Captain's gonna... call a family meeting... soon as he's done... talkin' to Inara," she pieced together between kisses.

Wash wrapped his arms around Zoe's waist and smiled, "guess...that means... I don't.... have enough time... to ravish... you." Almost dying had put things into perspective, when you're hurling into space in a shuttle with no control, it does something to a man. Wash wondered if anything else could possibly go wrong but he wasn't going to voice that out loud, he didn't want to be the one to jinx it.
"Have I told you how much I love you today?" He smiled and leaned in to kiss her again.

She looked thoughtful at if seriously considering his question.
"At least twice now," came the smooth, baritone voice of Book at the hatch of the kitchen. He smiled coyly with a twinkle in his eyes. Book averted his gaze to give them a private moment as he continued. "I apologize for the intrusion. Captain requested we gather here once we'd completed our tasks," he added both as a reminder and an explanation for intruding.
Zoe sighed. She leaned toward the counter to pick up the bar and whispered, "Love you, too," in Wash's ear. She handed it to him, unable to resist one more quick, chaste kiss before stepping away to join Book at the table.
"No harm done, Shepherd," Zoe reassured. She filled a couple mugs with water, placing one in front of Book as she took a seat and sipped at hers. "Captain's still in with Inara. He'll be joining us when he's done there."

Grabbing a cup of his own, he headed for the chair next to Zoe and poured himself some water. "Can never say enough, I love you's, never know when it might be your last." A bit dark for Wash to say out loud, but it needed to be said.
"Captain's still in with Inara. He'll be joining us when he's done there."

Zoe, ever the upstanding soldier and first mate, never spoke out against the Captain. Only a short hum before she took a drink gave the slightest indication that she acknowledged what her husband said. One could construe is as agreeing with her husband, but it would not hold up in any court.
"Far as I can tell, those two have been dancing the sidestep long before I got here." Book took a sip of his water, lowering the mug slightly to add, "Might be a fortnight 'fore we see 'em again if they switch to the Tango." He took another sip to hide his grin but it didn't hide the mischievous twinkle in his eye.
Zoe choked on her water. "Shepherd!" She tried. She really tried to sound admonishing but it was barely passable as such. Every now and again, Book would do or say something so far from his usual definitive preacher-like bearing that it would remind her he had a whole mysterious past none of them knew about.

Wash followed suit with Zoe and nearly choked on his drink. Shepherd, he was always full of surprises, he really wanted to know more about him. He didn't always act like a Shepherd. "Well, that is certainly an image." Wash cleaned up the water that dribbled on his chin and placed his cup down.

Wordless River opened the door, remaining at the door sill and staring like a zombie.
After another while she suddenly said: "They can't steal the clouds and the flowers from me!", before she nodded her head and walked to the table, the others were sitting at. Silent.
River tried to mentally hold on the clouds and flowers, before they would gone all blue again. She looked very concentrated.

"They can't steal the clouds and the flowers from me!", Wash jumps a little when he hears the voice of River from behind him. He wasn't sure how many more jump scares, he had been through way too much.
"Flower thieves, the worst kind." Wash gives her a small smile and gets up to pour her a drink of water. He felt for the girl, she had been through something horrible. Walking over to her, he placed the drink down in front of her. "Here, for you and some for the clouds."

Most who didn't know River thought she spoke gibberish but those who knew her could sometimes see that her words were more of a colorful, albeit sometimes hard to decipher riddle or allegory. He wasn't quite sure how to interpret this latest poetic offering but tried his best to answer with the best reassurance.
"Don't you worry none," he said in his soothing baritone. "The sky will always bring more clouds and as for the flowers, we'll plant you new ones."

**Mal and Inara enter from Inara's Shuttle**
"I'm just saying, you don't want to miss that kind of party." Mal stopped as soon as he entered the galley. It was so quiet you could hear a pin drop. Then he saw River taking a seat at the table. No questions nessessary. "Don't need to stop talking now that I'm here. Just make sure Jayne's the butt of the next joke. Since he's late."
The Captain stopped at the head of the table but didn't take a seat. He noticed they were missing their new passengers, including Monty. He assumed the Doc and Kaylee where pretty worse for wear. They could keep each other company down in the infirmary. "We'll give the others a moment or two. Can't say I blame em. Be much better if we were here for a few laughs and some drinks," Mal proceeded to hide Jayne's favorite bottle out of sight. "But we're not. So no."

Inara didn't get a chance to reply as when Mal opened the door, they were met with curious stares. The crew's interest in what was, or more accurately, wasn't going on between their captain and herself was another thing that set off alarm bells for the Companion. Often times, those not directly involved in a situation could see more clearly what those involved were blind to.
Inara schooled her features and swept past Mal, smiling kindly and nodding to everyone as she quietly took a seat at the table while Mal continued addressing the room.

*** Simon and Wendy enter from the Infirmary ***
Simon made a cursory scan of the room while maneuvering Wendy to the nearest empty chair. He held it out from the table and gave her time to lower herself into it. Still in clinical mode, he retrieved a bowl of protein soup and a glass of water. "You need to eat and stay hydrated," he advised, placing the makeshift meal on the table before her. He glanced at River, judging her to be calm at the moment before taking his own seat. "Did I miss anything?"

Wendy and Simon must have looked quite the pair of invalids, both supporting each other and moving at an easy pace, he with his gunshot wounded leg and she with her head swirling and weakened body. The captain had been addressing the group and she was unsure if she should take a place at the table. It felt intrusive as she wasn't part of this 'family' but when Simon pulled out a chair for her, she hesitantly sat and quietly thanked him when he went above and beyond by bringing her food and water.
She hadn't realized she was hungry until the food was placed in front of her but still, she resisted taking a bite of food or a drink of water until she received some form of indication that she was welcome to their provisions, let alone welcome on board.
