About a half hour passes.
During that time, Dex Wilde returned on the Shadowheart away shuttle to reconnect with his crewmates aboard the Serenity and Mal calls for everyone to collect in the Dining Area for a meeting with Dex volunteering to collect Wendy and River for the meeting.

*Dex enters with Wendy Carter from Inara's Shuttle*
The clanking of their feet walking along the platform filled the awkward silence between the two. All sorts of thoughts swirled in and out of Dex's mind - how this new group was going to perceive him first and foremost. Dex could only hope that he could blend just as well with the Serenity crew, Mads and the crew already had his trust and knew his story so as long as he dealt the same hand with these folks he figured he should be okay. His next train of thoughts brought him right back to the charming woman walking almost in sync with his steps as they descended down a flight of stairs. The Alliance had made sure that Dex had been informed of her training and skill as one of their spies, so he had come to the conclusion that handing her over to the Alliance would most definitely end in a fight. But as he glanced to the side to allow Wendy to come into his view, he couldn't help but to crack a grin as she worked quickly to fix her appearance. To Dex, she looked effortlessly beautiful even if she were to wear a garbage bag. His heart was beginning to become conflicted and he knew she was going to be trouble. But the Alliance still had no knowledge that she was here, and Dex decided that he wanted to ride things out a bit longer before then.
"So you were saying back there that you wouldn't be here today without the Doc's saint-like works, I'm assuming that instance wasn't due to anything of the clumsy nature?" Dex chuckled before turning slightly serious with concern as they continued to press through the cargo bay.

Wendy walked in awkward, yet companionable silence beside Dex, making adjustments to her clothes in the process. She liked talking with him and hearing the deep timber of his voice, but was unsure how to strike up a conversation. Playing a role as part of a job, she had that down to perfection. Being herself and conversing with people, that was much harder, especially when a person never had the time or opportunity to figure out who they actually were.
"So you were saying back there that you wouldn't be here today without the Doc's saint-like works, I'm assuming that instance wasn't due to anything of the clumsy nature?"
Clothes straightened to her satisfaction, Wendy had begun undoing her mussed up braid just as they'd finished descending the stairs. Clumsiness had had no place in her line of work and all manners of training had rendered anything of the like obsolete. "No," she said on a small laugh, the first part of his question forgotten with the way his sense of humor brightened her surroundings and snuffed out the dark. "A lifetime of training--" she paused, not liking how that sentence would have made her sound so inhuman and unrelatable. No longer under Blue Sun's heal, she was determined to try to feel as much like a person in her remaining time and not like the weapon or machine they'd seen and treated her as. "I've always been very graceful," she corrected. "The clumsiness is new."
Hair free of the braid, Wendy used her fingers to shake her curls back into place. Unbinding her hair had relieved a bit of pressure on her head and she rubbed her temples, momentarily stopping and closing her eyes as a small sigh of relief escaped her.

"A lifetime of training--""I've always been very graceful,""The clumsiness is new."
"Well then, I guess I showed up at the right time - you know, to save you from your sudden clumsy onset," Letting go of a nasally chuckle accompanied by a hearty smirk, Dex's full attention was on Wendy as he remained mutual through her short but sweet explanation even through her noticeable slip up. He wasn't surprised that Wendy didn't open up to him so easily, especially after scanning over her history. With his freedom on the line, Dex had proved to be devoted to the job and he was told that this particular case was rather 'complex'. That Dex wouldn't be dealing with any ordinary spy. He was let in on controversial files from the Blue Sun Corp. so that he would have a slight idea of what he may be dealing with, and from what he read he wouldn't shed any sort of shock if she didn't trust another person again. Wendy Carter is a weapon that, if a double agent, could cause the Alliance mass destruction, they said, she has to be brought down. The ways the Alliance officials had described her were absolutely inhuman. Yet, this woman walking beside him sparked of feeling. Whatever she was radiating, Dex felt it. If anything, this woman walking beside him was far from inhuman. Yet, she was still a traitor. And he was still on the job.
"I once had a near death experience," Dex's glace spanned between Wendy ruffling her head of bouncing curls to the descending stairs before them, "Got ransacked by some pirates and almost got thrown down a mine shaft, uh, you know, on one of my many Expeditions obviously," Dex cleared his throat after he stuttered through covering himself the last half of his story, first half being all too true. As they came to the floor level of Cargo Bay, Dex began to slow his steps as he braced himself for what they were about to walk into. He glanced over at Wendy and closed his lips together in a side grin as he admired her long locks. One in particular had strayed from the rest, hooking itself onto the corner of her lip. "Oh, hold up," Dex stopped in his tracks as he turned his whole body as he came face to face with Wendy. Without thinking, Dex lifted his fingers to gently remove the stray hair away from her face and smiled,"There," Still smiling, Dex stared down at Wendy as he fought hard as to not get lost in her captivating gaze, "You ready for this? The meeting, I mean." Dex clarified, running his fingertips through the front of his hair to whisk the fallen bangs away from his forehead.

"Well then, I guess I showed up at the right time - you know, to save you from your sudden clumsy onset,"
Amused, Wendy smiled, though she couldn't help but mourn over how wrong the timing was. But it wasn't just the timing. Another place, a normal life, there was the potential of something really good here. She felt it, not just in a normal sense but quite literally, with the extra sensory of her gift. Fate was cruel, waiting for the end to really flaunt what she'd missed out on in life.
Since the jolt she'd felt in the shuttle over their contact in aforementioned saving of clumsy onset, Wendy was being careful to leave just enough space between them to avoid any form of contact, even something as simple as the accidental brushing of a hand.
"I once had a near death experience,"
"Oh?" she replied, encouraging him to continue and welcoming the distraction. Wendy threw her full attention into his story and buried her previous thoughts, though could only manage to dull the emotional aspects of them.
"Got ransacked by some pirates and almost got thrown down a mine shaft, uh, you know, on one of my many Expeditions obviously,"
Wendy smirked. "Obviously," she said on a chuckle. "Well, I'm glad you lived to tell the tale." She distracted her mind with thoughts of how fascinating it was that a profession so ancient and archaic was still a thing. Even after having to abandon Earth-That-Was, pirates who'd sailed its seas had adapted to sailing the 'verse. Space pirates. Who'd have ever thought that would be a thing?
"Oh, hold up,"
"Hm?" came her automatic reply in response to being spoken to. Very effectively having distracted herself in her thoughts, she hadn't seen the simple, innocent gesture coming in time to stop it. The millisecond one of his fingers had grazed her face in a whisper of a touch had been enough to send the jolt of what he was feeling through her to mix with her own feelings, sending her into a daze just as it had in the shuttle. He was staring down at her, his lips moving, but she wasn't comprehending the words. Just as soon as his hand had fallen away from fixing his own hair, that rush of instantaneously doubling attraction had propelled her forward to pull his face down to hers.
It was the next jolt that went through her as soon as she'd pressed her lips to his that had made her come to her senses. Wendy quickly pulled away and released his face, holding her hands up in apologetic surrender as she backed away looking flushed and completely shocked over her own actions. "I am so sorry," came her softly spoken mortified apology before she hastily rushed ahead and disappeared into the kitchen.

One minute they were ready to go into a crew meeting, the next they had their lips pressed against one another's like school kids in a hallway. The moment had come to Dex's surprise, yet it had finished just as fast as it had started to his disappointment.
"I am so sorry,"
Warm and flustered, Dex couldn't help but to grin, his mouth hung open slightly as Wendy left him standing utterly stunned. Wendy had been long gone before Dex reacted with a single whistle that was awe-stricken. Taking a moment Dex fixed his hair, the only messy evidence left of the spontaneous make out before grabbing hold of his bearings before trailing behind her. Wendy might have been sorry, but Dex wasn't so quick to repent a damn good kiss.

***Dex enters from the Kitchen, Dining, and Lounge Area***
His holster laid out flat on top of one of the boxes, Dex towered over his weapons as he gave each one a turn to be fine tuned and loaded. His nerves got the best of him, yet he couldn't say that they were mission nerves. Rarely did Dex experience swallowing back a ball of nerves in fear of mission failure or even of losing his own life. The only thing he had to live for these past ten years was himself. Until Wendy barged in and ruined all of that for him with feelings he couldn't begin to verbalize in any sort of explanation. Examining the bullets all snug and in place in the pistol he held in his hands, Dex cocked the cylinder back into place with the flick of his wrist and placed it back into the holster. He was sure that this mission would be nothing short of a piece of cake. These people aboard this ship seemed experience in, well, whatever the hell it was that they do. Especially the Captain, though by the way he had his eyes on Dex he got the feeling that Reynolds felt rather threatened by his presence. Dex couldn't do anything except for chuckle at this possibility as he took it more as a compliment than anything.

Jayne had actually been on his way back to the lounge area, armed with not only Vera but also a bunch of his other favorite toys. He guessed everyone else was already waiting for him there, so, this time, Jayne had rather rushed with the cleaning, tuning and loading of his lady. Yet, as he passed the cargo bay, he couldn't help but stop his steps, noticing a figure inside. And, of course, he couldn't help but start a convo, as the figure turned out to be one of his new friends slash - or would it be in inverted commas? Well, never mind - persons that pissed him off.
"Peein' ya pants already now? Y'know, the Captain's takin' ya along to check the doc's diapers, but there ain't be nobody to change yours, hehe." Jayne called out to Dex through the open door, grinning due to the clever line he had come up with all by himself.

"Peein' ya pants already now? Y'know, the Captain's takin' ya along to check the doc's diapers, but there ain't be nobody to change yours, hehe."
Dex's head was still pointed towards his holster as he wrinkled his forehead to peer upwards at Jayne with an amused grin. He knew guys exactly like this chump back in prison. They got a real kick out of emasculating others to make themselves appear tough as nails. But when you challenge them, sometimes they tend to fall flat on their noses. Dex didn't want to stoop to this man's level, but it didn't hurt to banter a little. Just for fun.
"I see that you're the ray of sunshine on this ship. Ya might wanna keep your fantasies to yourself though," Dex spoke, his words encased with some light sarcasm as he held up one of his long knives and inspected the blade before deeming it's sharpness worthy and slipping it back into the holster. Turning his attention back to Jayne, Dex took note of all the weapons he had been carrying. His eyes marveled over one fairly large weapon in particular, "Is that Callahan Full-bore Auto-lock?" Dex asked as he casually admired the flashy looking gun. He wouldn't mind having one of those himself.

Jayne watched Dex gazing up at him with an amused grin on his face. Why was he grinning? Asshole. He tried to stand against it with one of his own, although his was looking less amused but more like he was trying too hard to stay cool.
"I see that you're the ray of sunshine on this ship. Ya might wanna keep your fantasies to yourself though,"
And again, asshole. Jayne was mostly right about people. Or so he thought, at least. He still had to prove that he was about the doc and his loopy sister, although it was a fact that Jayne felt less motivation for that ever since the day the Captain had made it more than clear to him that he shall not prove anything but his teamwork ability. He got ability to work in a team, just preferably in one he accepted at just that. Or in the team that brought him the most of money, granted. Well, nobody was perfect.
Jayne had not yet come up with a quick-witted remark because that kind of thing took some time. When his opponent opened his mouth to speak up again, Jayne was still thinking, with his mouth open as well. He wouldn't admit that, but he was actually relieved when Dex changed the topic.
"Is that Callahan Full-bore Auto-lock?"
"Don'tcha look at her like that," Jayne suddenly said with a tone that gave away he was at least half-serious about this warning, in a way that probably seemed more disturbing to others than to himself. "I mean - she doesn't like to be looked at that way, and ya ain't wanna be in her way when she gets angry." To make sure he wasn't joking - he actually might not -, Jayne hold Vera up in Dex's broad direction, now an amused grin on the face for his part.

"Don'tcha look at her like that," "I mean - she doesn't like to be looked at that way, and ya ain't wanna be in her way when she gets angry."
Dex found Jayne's way of expressing himself refreshing, even if it seemed rather perplexing on levels Dex couldn't fathom of venturing to. Though, one thing was for sure, Dex found respect for a man who had a deep appreciation for his weapons. Putting his hands up as if in a surrender, Dex looked upon Jayne rather apologetically with a sprinkle of sarcasm, "Pardon my violation. I guess I'll have to find one of my own to have and to hold," Dex commented with a strong temptation to snicker out loud. I guess not everyone was gifted in being charismatic to find human companions, so it appeared that weaponry was the next best thing for unlucky Jayne.
"So you got a good gig on this ship? Or you just like flyin' for fun?" Dex asked Jayne as he began to double check that each of his weapons was tightly secured into his holster before attaching it around his torso.

"Pardon my violation. I guess I'll have to find one of my own to have and to hold,"
Suddenly there was something about this dude that Jayne actually found likable. Dex was still being sarcastic - which was but a foreign word to Jayne - but the tone in it had changed somehow. Perplexed by his own sentiment, the grin on Jayne's face first changed into slight confusion and finally back into a grin, yet this time more like a pally one.
"So you got a good gig on this ship? Or you just like flyin' for fun?"
He lowered Vera before answering the question. "Both. My gig's givin' me a lot of fun." Jayne looked at Vera again with a smile, then back to Dex, with no smile. "Guess I missed the part about what you're exactly here for," he added with one foot set on a crate nearby. Jayne's tone and posture were still somewhat provoking but not anymore in the way of giving someone to understand that he wasn't meant to be here. Maybe only slightly. But with the option to convince Jayne to cross their name out on his personal hit list. Granted, there was none. Jayne wasn't exactly the kind of guy who would keep a list. It was all in his head instead.

"Both. My gig's givin' me a lot of fun." "Guess I missed the part about what you're exactly here for,"
Oh-ho. If only he knew of the life Dex had lived and what he went through to get here. What he agreed to, to get to this point in time. The deeper he dug himself, the more Dex felt the guilt of betrayal creep up from behind him. He shoved it away before it could pierce him in his heart. If he truly faced the facts, he was afraid that he would compromise his freedom, his entire life he had ahead of him. Images of his past flashed before his eyes for a moment before he avidly shoved them back into the vault. He turned to Jayne, giving away nothing more than a casual grin, "I've been avidly perusing the career of what you would call a 'galactic explorer'," Dex stretched both of his hands out in the air in front of him as he gave Jayne an explanation as to why he was present amongst the crew, "Captain Mads has been gracious enough to allow me to harbor on her ship between missions - plus it always helps having extra muscle around." Dex casually boasted. He couldn't help it, he was fully aware of his physically fit physique and he wasn't afraid to flaunt it in front of the other males, like a peacock putting on a show.

And once again, Jayne's flow got disrupted by some change in their way of conversing. Not that they would have shared a lot of words yet, so it was probably rather the fact that, usually, Jayne was used to receiving words or at least looks of either annoyance or indignation whenever he was talking to somebody on board this ship, but not so often, if not never at all, a serious expression, like the one on Dex's face right now. Then suddenly, a casual grin overlayed this expression Jayne had thought to have seen.
While people weren't attributing a lot of empathy to him, Jayne was, in actuality, gifted with that since that was even part of his job. How shall one bring somebody to talk without being able to push the right buttons by analyzing their weaknesses? Well, not in the way of this sciency crap, but rather in a cool way of just naturally sensing. The bad side of this truth, however, was that it also meant that Jayne was much more of an asshole than people probably hoped him to be, because of not attributing him assessment, like in situations where he would say something out of the line of what everyone called a sense of tact. Granted, that was something he had not at all. People were very right about that, yet wrong about that being something one would need.
"I've been avidly perusing the career of what you would call a 'galactic explorer'"
At that, an honestly impressed expression appeared on Jayne's features for once, although it also looked like he was trying to grasp what exactly it would be that Dex did. However, a job title with galactic in it sounded quite badass.
"Captain Mads has been gracious enough to allow me to harbor on her ship between missions - plus it always helps having extra muscle around."
"Yeah, I know what that means," Jayne chimed in with a silly grin while the muscles in his arms tensed just a little more for a moment. Dex was actually cool, definitely something different from those psychos Mal had been inviting to their crew lately. "So, what's it like? The galactic, I mean," Jayne asked, actually willing to learn about that while yet he hadn't even learned about galactic not being a noun.

"Yeah, I know what that means,"
Dex chuckled inwardly, but not in a way that would make him appear condescending. This Jayne guy was actually starting to grow on him. Everything you see is what you get, nothing more and nothing less. Those were the kinds of people Dex preferred to surround himself with. He had been around so many deceptive people in his life, those who showed you only what you wanted to see that it was rather exhausting. His act was rather exhausting. But he had to stick with the plan, until he thought of a better one to get him out of the eye of the Alliance. Which, at this point, would be next to impossible.
"So, what's it like? The galactic, I mean,"
"Well I'll tell ya this, It's a whole 'lotta space," Holding his hands out quite a few feet apart in explanation, Dex spoke admittingly, as he always made his alias sound shinier than it actually might be and figured he needed to make things a tad more realistic, "But it's the adventure that's worth it. You just gotta find something worth chasin' after. Some spend their whole lives exploring the Galaxy, never knowing when to stop. As for me," Dex withdrew his hands from in front of him and placed them back onto his belt that now had all of his weapons tightly secured. Grabbing his belt, he began to fasten it around his waist while he still spoke to Jayne, "I've been on many adventures. Chased a whole 'lotta stuff. I'm still waitin' for that one mission where I'll feel satisfied enough to settle." Dex trailed off as he fastened the final buckle on his belt. He had found something worth settling for on this particular mission he was on, Dex just hoped he could make the right decision in the end of it all.
"So how do you and the Captain know each other? You and Malcolm?" Dex inquired as he leaned his body weight onto one of the heavy towers of cargo, resting his elbow on one of the exposed tops of the boxes for support, "You both go way back, or are you strictly a business kind of man?" Dex asked, though from what he saw Malcolm and his crew look more like a family dynamic than anything.

"Well I'll tell ya this, It's a whole 'lotta space,""But it's the adventure that's worth it. You just gotta find something worth chasin' after. Some spend their whole lives exploring the Galaxy, never knowing when to stop. As for me,""I've been on many adventures. Chased a whole 'lotta stuff. I'm still waitin' for that one mission where I'll feel satisfied enough to settle."
There lay an actually fascinated and almost entranced expression on his face once Dex had finished. Of course, not in the way like ladies might, but instead like showing his respect, from one dude to another. Something, maybe even more valuable than the former, at least in Jayne's eyes. Earning such a look from Jayne might not be something worldshaking, yet something, coming from a heart since no one had ever gotten that from him when not deserved. He didn't like hypocrites and sycophants. Two words that might not be in Jayne's vocabulary, yet he surely was aware of their meaning.
"Ai ya gao gan...,"* Jayne eventually uttered as he shook his head in a way as if he couldn't wrap his mind around the many things this man must have seen as he talked of adventures all throughout the Galaxy. Sure, this was no competition, but Jayne would probably give a hand, maybe only a finger - better not to overstate - to shine in the way Dex certainly did whenever telling these stories to the ladies. Ah damn. Why didn't he go to school longer, or at least with a more frequent presence while he was? He might be a galactic person with probably a harem of chicks himself now. On the other hand, that sounded like a lot of work, in many ways.
Eventually, Dex's voice interrupted his hard thinking with a question on his part. Well, shiny, now anything he says will sound so much poorer. And as if he had to make up for that, Jayne leaned his body weight onto something around as well, just as Dex did, but tried to look heavier weighted as he did - as for muscles, of course.
"So how do you and the Captain know each other? You and Malcolm?""You both go way back, or are you strictly a business kind of man?"
"Nah, we're friends," Jayne answered sincerely, "like one of these kinds havin' a go at each other at times, but always patchin' things up again in the end. Well, ya know how it is, dontcha?" He assumed that Dex was also someone who could get himself into a tussle since he didn't seem to him like some kind of chicken. "I got a talent for pissin' people off." He assumed that was something Dex might have figured out on his own, of a firsthand experience probably. Suddenly Jayne had to chuckle, remembering Dex's question about how the Captain and himself have gotten to know each other. "Actually, 'twas that way right from the start. Nothin' personal, though. Was just one of three men, ordered to blow him and Zoe away."

"Nah, we're friends," "like one of these kinds havin' a go at each other at times, but always patchin' things up again in the end. Well, ya know how it is, dontcha?"
"Heh, yea. Right...," Dex replied as if he totally understood Jayne's point of view. In all honesty, it had been a while since Dex had an actual friend. He had murdered the only person in the galaxy that he ever had as an honest person in his life, someone that had always been there for him. And making friends in prison wasn't exactly a cake walk for him either. People either wanted something from him or wanted to use him for their own benefit, so he kept to himself for years just simply trying to survive until his early release. Dex's past had truly hardened his heart to the point where his only desire was to live his free life doing jobs without hesitation and no strings attached. He was convinced he was wicked, and didn't deserve anyone other his gun and the wide open galaxy. That was, until recent events began to unthaw his stone cold heart and bring him back to life again. He didn't realize how much he had missed human connection until as of late.
"I got a talent for pissin' people off."
Dex looked over at Jayne and with a grin he raised a single eyebrow, "Oh? I hadn't noticed," He couldn't help but to chuckle. He was in good spirits though, and only poked fun and he was certain that the man could take it. People have probably said worse things to him, as some had done to Dex. As charming as Dex came across now, he hadn't always been that way. The charm was more of a learnt quality from his former teacher. And it was moments like these that made him miss Niles and made him wonder what have I done?
"Actually, 'twas that way right from the start. Nothin' personal, though. Was just one of three men, ordered to blow him and Zoe away."
Dex nearly dropped the handgun that he had just picked up from the top of the cargo box. Ordered? Was this man a bounty hunter too? Or some kind of soldier...Like Dex, it sounded as if Jayne had been sent on a mission like his. Only the end result could have been Malcolm and Zoe's brains splattered all over the inside of the ship. And yet, here they all were - free and living together in harmony. How did Jayne possibly wake up from his September to meet his Spring?
"Wow - I could only imagine the first impressions all 'round. It's great and all, that things worked out, but - how did you do it? Abort the mission, I mean, I'm sure your boss wasn't too happy?" Dex asked curiously as he faced Jayne in question as he slipped his handgun into the front of his pants. He felt as if he was living in the coldest part of his own September and that he would never see the light of a sweet redemption. Dex internally shook his head, as there's no way it was that easy.

*** Mal enters from Kitchen, Dining and Lounge Area *** Originally, Mal was going to straight head towards his bunk to waste no more time and prepare himself for their mission, but when he caught scraps of conversation out of Jayne's mouth as he neared the cargo bay, he couldn't help but stop his steps and listen to the rest of it. The topic was just too intriguing to not, and what was, even more, was to whom Jayne was telling this story. "... Nothin' personal, though. Was just one of three men, ordered to blow him and Zoe away.""Wow - I could only imagine the first impressions all 'round. It's great and all, that things worked out, but - how did you do it? Abort the mission, I mean, I'm sure your boss wasn't too happy?"Mal smirked before continuing his steps, yet not further along the corridor but instead through the open door of the cargo bay. He insisted on finishing the story in place of Jayne. "Oh, actually he was," Mal suddenly interrupted the two men while placing himself in the door frame with his hands casually resting on both sides of his belt, not speaking of the bounty hunter but instead of himself. "He needed crew members and was willing to pay more than the standard seven percent. Oh - and to serve with a room of one's own, of course. After all, I would expect nobody to put up with sharing a bunk with Jayne." For reasons, Mal added, only inwardly, as a hint of shudders flashed over his features for a moment. "Anyways, a well-placed offer can work miracles. Like sparing you from getting gunned down, am I right, Jayne?" He smirked at Jayne, but since he was still geared to expediting their departure, Mal didn't leave Jayne time to react to any of his words but instead went on talking. Yet still, he couldn't help but throw one more line at him, after all. "I'm surprised you chose that story to tell instead of the one where you've become - what was it again? - Oh yeah, hero of Canton." And yet again, Mal wouldn't allow his crew member to give voice to the curses that lay on that one's face while he himself actually had his fun with this for a moment. Then, with his eyes wandering over towards Dex, Mal added more seriously and especially more commanding: "In fifteen minutes back in the dining room. I'd like to discuss some more details before we set out." Without any more words or heed to Jayne, Mal stepped out of the door frame and instead continued his way towards his bunk to get prepared himself, only a slight smirk shown on his features. The good ol' heroic story of 'The man they call Jayne' was always to raise ones spirits. *** Mal exits ***

"Wow - I could only imagine the first impressions all 'round. It's great and all, that things worked out, but - how did you do it? Abort the mission, I mean, I'm sure your boss wasn't too happy?"
Just when Jayne was about to reply to that, suddenly, the captain's voice interrupted them to answer for him instead.
"Oh, actually he was,""He needed crew members and was willing to pay more than the standard seven percent. Oh - and to serve with a room of one's own, of course. After all, I would expect nobody to put up with sharing a bunk with Jayne."
At first, slight confusion lay on Jayne's face, which soon got replaced with the expression of one who just received a verbal hit. That had supposed to be one, or hadn't it? The confusion came back.
"Anyways, a well-placed offer can work miracles. Like sparing you from getting gunned down, am I right, Jayne?"
And yet again, Jayne felt slightly insulted. He just still had no idea in which way exactly, but since Mal didn't leave him any time to react, Jayne had not to further ponder about that. But then the verbal punches started to hit him really low.
"I'm surprised you chose that story to tell instead of the one where you've become - what was it again? - Oh yeah, hero of Canton."
Whatever he had said good about their captain before, at this moment, Jayne wished to retract all of it. He gave Mal glares of indignation but, once again, got left no time to give voice to any of that. This time, Mal went to a different topic entirely, namely the mission they were preparing for.
"In fifteen minutes back in the dining room. I'd like to discuss some more details before we set out."
And with that, Mal left through the open door, continuing his way along the corridor.
"Don't ya dare ask," Jayne grunted towards Dex after they had been left to themselves again. However, Mal had screwed this whole storytelling up for him. The last Jayne wanted was to explain what it was all about this hero of Canton line. Too absorbed in his disgruntlement, he didn't even take notice of something drawing Dex's attention away from him for a moment.
"Forgot the grenades," Jayne eventually stated, of course only to slip from a potential explaining until Dex might just forget about it.
Then he walked through the door himself, one last grunting sound escaping his lips. Freaking Mal.
*** Jayne exits ***

"I'm surprised you chose that story to tell instead of the one where you've become - what was it again? - Oh yeah, hero of Canton." "In fifteen minutes back in the dining room. I'd like to discuss some more details before we set out."
Just like that, Mal had made his exit just as swift as his entrance. Dex wasn't surprised, as he felt tense air rise from Mal's ears like ravenous steam pouring out of a kettle. He felt that Mal had a bone to pick with him, and Dex wasn't sure if it was a territorial thing or what it was exactly. Could he sense that his intentions were not pure? There was no point in dwelling on the 'what if's'. He didn't care what this Captain thought of him when there were more important matters at hand.
Moments shortly after Mal had made his exit, Dex sported a surprised glance over his features as his head slowly turned over to face Jayne, whose face had turned as red as a beet. "Did he say hero?" Dex pondered, aching to know the details that lie behind that particular story.
"Don't ya dare ask," "Forgot the grenades,"
"Don't think I won't ask you 'bout it again later," Dex spoke in almost a challenging tone as he pointed a finger at Jayne who was trying to change the subject and make a swift exit so that he wouldn't have to share the details of the event that he would rather not speak about. Dex chuckled to himself as he grew pleasantly surprised at how fun that conversation with Jayne really was. Grinning to himself, he scanned his surroundings as he nodded in approval. He was certain that he was actually going to like it on this ship after all.
Suddenly, Dex's bubble of content popped, as it was speared with a subtle notification noise coming from his communicator. His gaze shifted left, and then right, before huddling in the corner of the Cargo Bay to check his messages. Dread overcame him as he knew just where this was leading.
"Dr. Zed: Mission report."
Not now...Dex thought internally. Yet, he knew he had a job to follow through with. One that secured his future freedom.
"Dex: On board Serenity. Target Wendy Carter acquired. Monitoring from afar and gaining valuable intel. Will report with more information once available."
Dex wrote back quickly and hit the send button before anyone else could notice what he was doing in secret.

***Wendy enters from Infirmary and Common Area***
As she was approaching the opening between the corridor and the cargo bay, Wendy remembered that she'd recently used her gun which meant some rounds needed to be replaced. Head down and the brim of her Stetson blocking her view of the room ahead, she pulled her antique Earth-That-Was Smith & Wesson Model 3 from the gun belt resting on her hips and smoothly and expertly gave the gun a flick, releasing the chamber to see how many empty slots needed to be filled.
Reaching some crates, Wendy removed her hat and placed it on top of a crate. She'd been too distracted in her thoughts and worry over how things would go planet-side to realize how quiet it was or that she wasn't feeling a group of people. "Everyone ready..." her voice tapered off when she finally took a look at the cargo bay and realized only she and Dex were present. And here she'd thought she'd been running late due to not wanting to end her chat with Kaylee.
Letting her eyes settle on Dex, her confused expression melted into a warm smile. The last time they'd been alone together, she'd made a fool of herself, attacking him like she did, but she was determined not to be embarrassed. "Where is everyone?"
Reaching into the little pouch attached to the gun belt, she pulled the number of bullets free needed to fill the empty slots of the chamber, switching her gaze back and forth between her task and Dex. Technically, she could keep her eyes on her task alone as she only needed her ears to hear his answer, but he was just so nice to look at.

The notification sound of the speedy reply received made Dex jump slightly. Looking around his device while secretly peering left and right every now and then, he fought to find a way to turn the sound down before it got him into some serious trouble. Finding a little button on the side to mute the device, Dex sighed with relief before opening the new message. Though, the relief was only a temporary feeling and a new wave of dread crept in as Dex read the new message.
"Dr. Zed: Awesome. :-)))) Replacement seated. More frequent reporting requested."
More frequent reporting? Dex scratched his head as stared down at the message and read it over and over, growing rather nervous. Hadn't his reports sufficed? Did this Dr. Zed not have a clue of how undercover work usually ran it's course? Were they growing suspicious of him, too? And what in the world was that strange looking symbol in the middle of the message all about?
"Dex: Roger that. Over."
Hitting the send button, an exasperated look glazed over Dex's complexion as he stared forward in deep though. Anxiety began to claw away at Dex's insides as more was now being expected from him when he thought his current method of reporting would keep Dr. Zed and The Alliance at bay until he could figure himself out and what he really wanted out of this situation. His long awaited freedom that they teased him with was nearly obtained. The Alliance had dangled the idea in front of him ever since they busted him out early to do their dirty work, and Dex had been fine with doing what had to be done to make him a free man once more. Though...freedom would be lonely without someone by his side.
"Everyone ready..."
Wendy's voice suddenly snapped Dex out of his painful daze of contemplation. As his eyes laid on her, he thought about grabbing her hand, hijacking an escape pod and blasting off far into the galaxy. He would have freedom, and the woman of his dreams. Though, in his heart he knew The Alliance would hunt them down. And not only that, but Wendy needed this doctor that they were setting out to find. She had been very emotional about it the last time they spoke, and Dex didn't blame her. Dex also was aware that if he didn't hand Wendy over soon, the Alliance would come get her themselves and they would both lose. He had a lot to think about, and the clock was ticking.
Their eyes finally locked, and Wendy's smile made Dex feel like he had returned home. He wanted nothing more than to scoop her up into his arms and return that kiss she had graced his lips with earlier. Inwardly, he scolded himself whenever these thoughts and feelings overcame him as he was giving both of them a sense of false hope. Yet, he couldn't help himself and greeted her with a smile just as warm as she was giving him.
"Where is everyone?"
"Change of plans," Dex started as he began to stroll over to meet Wendy at her side while she prepared her weaponry for the mission, "The Captain ordered everyone to meet back in the dining room shortly, says we need to go over more important detailing. I reckon it will be more productive than the tea party earlier - whoops!" Dex was in the middle of explaining the new orders Malcolm had announced to him and Jayne before his reflexes jumped in mid air to catch one of Wendy's bullets that had rolled away. He stretched the palm of his hand with the bullet sitting in the middle in Wendy's direction, "Ya doing alright? 'Seem a little...distracted," Dex spoke amusingly through his cheeky grin as his words poked at Wendy with a hint of flirtatious flair.

"Change of plans,"
Dex started to move toward her and the closer he got, the stronger she felt his attraction toward her mixing and doubling up with her own attraction toward him. By the time he stood a mere few steps in front of her, it felt as if the temperature in the cargo bay had gone up ten degrees. She was suddenly sorry she'd decided to casually lean back against the crates because it stopped her from taking any steps back to alleviate some of that attraction she felt from both parties. There was also a part of her that wasn't sorry and was very much liking this thrilling, addicting feeling.
"The Captain ordered everyone to meet back in the dining room shortly, says we need to go over more important detailing. I reckon it will be more productive than the tea party earlier - whoops!"
Wendy had been trying to put all her concentration into his words to distract herself from feeling. As he'd angled his head downward to speak to her, his motions and slight movements whilst speaking had dislodged some of that neatly combed back amazing hair, sending that little wave of it forward to rest on his forehead. What was it about that simple little thing that just made her melt? She couldn't pull her gaze away and missing her turn to gaze down at what she was doing along with her increased distraction, the bullet missed the slot and bounced off the outside of the chamber.
She didn't notice she'd missed and probably wouldn't have noticed if the gorram bullet had loudly clanged against the metal floor. It was his exclamation along with the quick step toward her that made her realize something was amiss. She looked down at the bullet in his hand, slightly bewildered that she, Wendy Carter, master of many weapons, had managed to miss something as simple as sliding a bullet into its chamber slot.
Now feeling some embarrassment, she quickly snatched it from his palm with a mumbled, "Thanks," before averted her gaze downward to be sure the last bullet found its proper way into the chamber.
"Ya doing alright? 'Seem a little...distracted,"
Hearing the playful flirtatious flair in his voice, she glanced back up at him, still standing closer, and narrowed her eyes playfully in return, at not only having noticed the effect he had on her, but at having the audacity to voice it. Though she didn't really see it as audaciousness. Since most people hid or denied what they felt or saw in others, it was brave and refreshing. "Oh, I have a feeling you know very well how distracting you are," she tossed back just as boldly with a cheeky grin of her own. With swift and graceful movements, Wendy flicked the gun, returning the chamber into place then slid the gun back into her holster.
The feelings coming from both ends were intensifying and Wendy momentarily looked down to collect herself. Feeling the urge to grab hold of him again, she placed her hands back against the crate, her fingers curling around the edge of it near her hips. Mutual feelings or not, she'd acted without giving him a choice and she was determined to not do that to him again. "Look, um," she began, pulling her eyes back to meet his, "I'm sorry about before. I'm not... functioning properly." Great, she sounded as if she were a robot. "I can't--" gorrammit, how did she explain this? Her fingers itching to reach forward, she tightened her grip on the crate and finally just laid it all out. "I'm feeling everything and if you don't take a few steps back, I can't promise it won't happen again," she warned.

"Oh, I have a feeling you know very well how distracting you are,"
"Well, if this were a competition, I'd say you would'a won earlier with that very distracting thing you did," Dex cocked his head to the side, smiling playfully as he brought them back to the surprise intertwining moment they shared earlier. He spoke respectfully as his grinning eyes held a genuine gaze on Wendy while she reciprocated with a cheeky grin of her own. He watched her as she placed her weapon swiftly into her holster. Dex had found Wendy's little plant on his lips so distracting, that he couldn't stop thinking about it since then. He wasn't sure where the sudden muster of courage had come from for him to finally bring the elephant in the room up for discussion. If anything, he had felt rather reluctant to mention it at all. A spur of the moment was often classified as either true feelings or big mistakes. At this point, if Wendy were to admit that it was a mistake, then he decided that he could take the fall. If anything, she would be doing him a favor, as now he was clearly out of his bounds with the one he was supposed to be surrendering over to The Alliance.
As Wendy's gaze suddenly grew flustered and dropped away from Dex and down to the floor, the temptations arising in Dex were all too enticing. He wanted nothing more than to get closer to her. Cargo Bay was rather public, Dex wondered what if anyone were to walk in and see them right now? But what if they had already seen them? Or sensed the magnetic pull that was pushing them together? Dex cared about screwing things up for himself in this place. In this mission. Though, there was a natural part coming forth within him that he had never cared to acknowledge or explore before. He had no reason to, until he met this woman before him. Dex's hand was about to flinch forward and gently scoop Wendy's chin into his fingers in comfort, until she raised her gaze back up at him.
"Look, um," "I'm sorry about before. I'm not... functioning properly."
That makes two of us, Dex knew they had both driven each other out of sorts ever since they met on this ship. Though, he was confused as to why she was apologizing. He hoped that his mentioning of the kiss earlier did not kick her into a guilt trip, because he had absolutely no regrets. Dex's smile faded as he noticed how tight her grip was getting on the boxes that she pressed herself up against. Concerned, he took a step forward but then stopped immediately at the sight of her flinching. His heart sank. "Wendy, I-," He started but then was interrupted by Wendy as she pressed onward with trying to explain to him how she was feeling inside.
"I can't--" "I'm feeling everything and if you don't take a few steps back, I can't promise it won't happen again,"
Dex wasn't sure what to do or say. He wasn't sure if she liked him or felt like kissing him was a big mistake. One thing was for certain, and that was the fact that he hated seeing her like this. Frazzled and in agony of not being in full control. "Do you...want it to happen again?" Dex asked with sobering sincerity as his stomach was jumbled into a giant knot. Taking her words into consideration, Dex was afraid he had let his heart go to far and that he was in over his head about the entire situation. They weren't even a thing. Just two people aboard the same ship.

Wendy had expected him to take that step back, as most would have for fear of their feelings being made known. But he'd only moments ago shown in his playful flirtations that he wasn't afraid to own up to his feelings so really, she shouldn't have been surprised.
Yet he had caught her off guard causing her to forget about guarding her own feelings, which were clearly written on her face. Her brows furrowed and her expression looked almost pained with how much she wanted the impossible. Her mouth opened, the word 'Yes!' wanting to leap forth, but Wendy quelled it and forced her gaze down. She could feel that he felt the same way about her and knew that lying and saying 'no' would crush something inside him just as it would her if she'd been the one to pose the same question to him.
As she stared off to the side at a spot on the ground, a cruel realization had a short humorless laugh escape her. "You know, that's the first time anyone's ever asked me what I wanted," she observed in a quiet, emotionally disconnected way. Shoulders slumping along with her whole being as she resigned herself to reality, Wendy shook her head and spoke the hard truth. "But what I want doesn't matter anymore."
Wendy looked up again and though her tone had been simple, cold logic, there was pleading in her eyes for him to understand that this thing between them had nowhere to go. Her expectations of her visit with the doctor being successful ranged from low to none. At best, she had a few days left in her, conscious ones, if she was lucky. But she had only about an hour left in their company for she'd also made the decision that she'd be staying behind on the planet and insisting they all immediately return to the ship. Wendy wanted River and the rest to get as far away from her as possible because dead or alive, Blue Sun would not stop their search for one of their most prized experiments.

"You know, that's the first time anyone's ever asked me what I wanted," "But what I want doesn't matter anymore."
Dex wanted to react. He wanted to shake his head frivolously and tell her just how amazing she was. Yet, deep down Dex knew she was right. Not necessarily about her wants, but their wants. He had been chasing after the impossible. If he continued to press forward so selfishly, he knew it would only make matters worse. If she really did only have a short span of life left, it would be better to spend it freely than in the hands of The Alliance. Or something just as bad if not worse, in the grasp of a budding relationship that would only be painfully torn away from both of them. He didn't care if this affected his deal or even his freedom. It was in that moment that he made a decision that he would refuse to hand the woman he cared about over to the very organization that was causing her unavoidable, slow demise.
As he stood silently staring at Wendy in his silent distress, her eyes connected with his in communication. An inkling arose within him that led him to believe that she was considering staying behind while Dex and the others went forward with the mission. She didn't have to utter a single word for him to understand. The intensity that ignited in her eyes was loud and clear. Nodding, Dex's gaze dropped to his boots momentarily before looking back up at Wendy, "I've known you not longer than a minute, Wendy, but whatever happens from this moment onward...just know that you'll always matter to me." Dex could barely utter the final word to his sentence before he could feel his throat getting choked up. Clearing the crack away, it was agonizing for him to turn his gaze away from Wendy in this moment. But he had to, otherwise he would completely lose his shit.

In all her life, nobody had so openly and so genuinely shown care for her. Not even her own parents. Far from it, in truth. She'd only ever had two allies; a childhood friend who she'd lost contact with shortly after her parents had sold her to the Alliance, and a friend and Companion, literally, who'd been her trainer and who she'd been able to remain in contact with her due to traveling in similar circles.
She'd thought that that had been near the height of what it felt like to be truly and deeply cared about and to truly and deeply care about another in turn, but in the short time since she'd observed the Firefly crew and even more so, when Dex wandered into her life, she'd begun to realize how wrong she'd been. She'd only been standing on the low ledge of a towering mountain. The strange giddiness that made a silly smile want to take over her face whenever she looked at him and the way it felt as if a jolt went through her heart whenever he smiled at her or stood close, it hinted at the potential of unfathomable heights.
Pulling herself from trying to fathom the unfathomable, Wendy reached out as he passed her, barely catching his hand before it had become out of reach. The instant her hand came in contact with his, she could feel how much he'd meant his words. "Dex, wait." Wendy wanted to experience a hint of what it might be like, but she did not want to pull him any deeper or cause him further pain when they had to part ways. Just something simple that wouldn't have her heart soaring like that unexpected kiss had but would give her a memory that would warm her heart. "Could you just..." she struggled with how to ask for something seemingly simple. "Would you mind..." Her arm lifted slightly in the gesture of what she was trying to ask, but she was suddenly feeling more and more self conscious over what she'd initially thought would be an easy request to simply be held for a moment. The feeling of how silly the ask suddenly felt had embarrassment escalating quickly. Her free arm dropped and she started to release his hand as she spoke in a rapid fire attempt to back peddle her way out of her embarrassing situation. "You know what? Never mind. It's stupid. You don't have to. Just forget--"

No. There was no way Dex was going to let this final opportunity slip through his fingers. If he turned his back now without giving either one of them something to hold onto, Dex knew that he would regret it for the rest of his life. Just as Wendy's hand started to fall away from his, Dex grasped it like a ledge he was holding onto for dear life and without warning pulled her body close to his. Placing a caressing hand on her jawline, Dex stared deeply into Wendy's longing gaze before closing his eyes and pressing his lips against hers with gentle passion. In this moment, Dex didn't care who was around or if anyone saw them together. Even if it was just this one last kiss, he knew he just had to leave Wendy with something. Pulling away was the hard part, for it meant that their ways would be officially parted. As he let go of the embrace and finally turned to walk out of the room, it took everything within Dex to not look back. He only dreamed that from this moment that she would find hope in this final gesture of love, because that's what she deserved in the end.
