MOX
With a groan, he shoved the last crate into place. Hauling foodstuffs was certainly easier than livestock or homesteaders. Most homesteaders took one look at Pickett and thought it best to stay put, and the cows weren't big fans of his mood swings either. Maybe once they got to Higgin's Moon, he'd down a few tankards of Mudder's Milk and be a little more agreeable. Mox just wanted a week's vacation, just enough time to catch up with his wife and daughter, and then he'd get back to work. Sure, Patience wouldn't be happy to know Frank was anywhere near her territory, but Frank could be hospitable for at least long enough to get in and out of atmo.

FRANK PICKETT
Frank Pickett jumped down the stairs, using the sidebars to swing himself down. "Hey, Mox," he called as he moved to lean on the crates. "We got a little change of plan. No hittin' Higgins' Moon for a little while; mudders are riotin' like it's the last day of the Shitty Mudhut Carpet sales."
Pickett frequently did business on Higgins' Moon, and although he bore no love for the Magistrate they still had a certain working relationship that proved beneficial, if not savory. The mudders liked to riot sometimes, if they got their blood up or their milk down, and Higgins always put them down. This time, however, it seemed a little different. Something to do with a statue or the like. "Rumor is that Higgins is bringin' a few Alliance boys in to quiet things down. Or the Alliance are investigating for themselves, thinking about bringing unions and the like to the Hooplehead Capital. Not too sure, but point remains: too much risk, too little reward."
I wouldn't mind blowing up some of those purple bellies and seeing what color their guts are, thought Pickett. Such thoughts often came to him, scratching at the back of his head like a mutt at a screen door. But this time...wasn't the time. "We didn't have any prior agreement with Higgins this time anyhow. He won''t mind missing out on something he never knew was coming." Frank paused for a moment, studying Mox. "How's New Melbourne sound?"
New Melbourne, planet of the fish. Docks and boats far as the eye could see; most folks there lived in their floating cities and harvesting non-fish foodstuffs was mostly controlled by the lucky establishments on what little land there was. It would be easy to sell their cargo, but Pickett wanted to know what his first mate thought about picking up passengers. Whether he'd know right away the reason for New Melbourne, or suggest it, or not guess it.

"Uh...okay," he said, his eyebrows inching upward. He wasn't overly fond of plan changes, but riots being put down by purplebellies was even less appealing. Looked like his hypothetical vacation was about to get postponed even further. "You sure we wouldn't be steppin' on any toes in New Melbourne? I mean, I'm all for helpin' the less fortunate, but not if someone's already got the contract to do so."

Pickett grinned, and reached out to place his large hands on Mox's shoulders. "No toe-stepping or scuffed heels. You got it. Just a little business, the fresh smell of fish, and maybe some more fish. Topped off with fish," said Frank. He took his hands away. "Don't go worrying that mustache off your face. You'll see the family soon. And you'll have cash for 'em."

"Riiight. Cash is good," he agreed with a hesitant nod. His captain seemed agreeable and optimistic, which worried him. "I'll go inform the pilot of our new itinerary." He started up the stairs but paused and looked back at Pickett. "It's been a while. We got any outstanding warrrants on New Melbourne?" he inquired.

"If I can't remember 'em, the law won't either," said Frank with a smile, deciding on the fly that logic was for wimps. "Don't worry, Mox. Everything will be fine."

***Frank, Jax, and Wendy enter from Planet - New Melbourne - Docks & Surrounding Areas***
WENDY
Somewhere along the way to Frank's ship, Wendy had given herself over to exhaustion. She lightly dozed as the potent injection did its work to restore her system to normal. Wendy sensed a change in her surroundings and knew they were aboard Frank's ship now.
"Jax," she said groggily. "What about your client? You're putting your job... your whole way of life at risk if you go with me." Everyone else in her life had left her. Now she was giving him that same option. The selfish part of her wanted so badly for him to stay but she also couldn't bare the thought of him losing everything. He'd already done more for her by far than all the other people had in her life. Combined.

FRANK PICKETT
"Chloe!" boomed Pickett as he entered, his voice echoing around the cargo bay. "Chloe, get your ass down here, you have a goddamn patient!"
"Jax, What about your client? You're putting your job... your whole way of life at risk if you go with me."
Pickett wheeled around. "Hooker, you can stay or you can go, but either way we're getting off this planet in six minutes so don't be half-in and half-out."
Dr Chloe Utterson quickly sprinted down the stairwell. "Cap, I'm not deaf, but keep yellling and I will be," she said with a hefty sigh. The young doctor glanced from Pickett to Wendy and Jax. "Oh, hello. Actually, when you got someone this good-lookin' coming aboard, yell your lungs out. Good call, Cap."
Pickett barely had time to facepalm, but managed to sneak one in like a professional. "Chloe, not now," he said. "This is Wendy. She's very important, and I need you to look at her in the infirmary. Now. And where's Mox?"

"...And where's Mox?"
"He's right here," he said, wiping grease from his hands with a cloth as he'd just come from the engine room. "And he ain't deaf, either."
He paused to take in the new male and female occupants of the cargo bay. "Uh, new...cargo?" he asked Frank with a furrowed brow.

JAX
"Jax, What about your client? You're putting your job... your whole way of life at risk if you go with me."
He set Wendy down gently on a crate before answering her question. "Don't worry about that Wendy. He's one of my regulars, so I think he'll forgive me. Plus I'm giving him a decent discount next time." He smiled to reassure her that this one incident was not going to break him. He was in good standing with the Companion guild and he had plenty of regulars; not to mention new clients waiting for him to accept their offers. He was golden.
"Hooker, you can stay or you can go, but either way we're getting off this planet in six minutes so don't be half-in and half-out."
His smile turned sour, however, at Pickett's words and he glared at him unabashedly. "I go where she goes, you ben tian sheng de yi dui rou. And call me 'hooker' again and see what happens."

WENDY
"Don't worry about that Wendy. He's one of my regulars, so I think he'll forgive me. Plus I'm giving him a decent discount next time."
Wendy was relieved that he didn't take her up on her offer to leave. She was afraid to face this alone, particularly the part where she was going to be stuck on a ship with Frank.
"Hooker, you can stay or you can go, but either way we're getting off this planet in six minutes so don't be half-in and half-out."
"I go where she goes, you ben tian sheng de yi dui rou. And call me 'hooker' again and see what happens."
Afraid of this bickering escalating to anything further, Wendy placed her vid screen down and made a show of massaging her temples in hopes of distracting them. Wendy looked up at the new arrival; a doctor. Wendy began mentally going through the names of doctors her contacts had reached out to but her train of thought was interrupted by Frank.
"This is Wendy. She's very important, and I need you to look at her in the infirmary. Now. And where's Mox?"
Wendy's hands paused as she looked over at Frank in slight confusion. Very important? What did he mean by that?

FRANK PICKETT
"Uh, new...cargo?"
"Somethin' like that," said Pickett with slight uncertainty.
"I go where she goes, you ben tian sheng de yi dui rou. And call me 'hooker' again and see what happens."
Pickett rounded on Jax. "This is my ship. My command. Mine. So if you want to stay on-board it would fuckin' behoove you to keep a respectful tongue," he snarled, and called to Mox. "Moxie, if this whore raises his fists to me I want you to shoot him."
"Gah! Too many people talking!" said Chloe, shooting Pickett a, 'don't shoot anyone in the cargo bay because the blood gets through the floor grating and then we have to lift it up to clean it' look. In the few years he'd known her, Pickett had become impressed by Chloe's database of situation-specific looks.
She moved toward Wendy, placing a gentle hand on the newcomer's shoulder. "Ignore Captain Shouty-face," said Chloe sweetly. "I think you ought to get to the infirmary with me. Just so we can check you out...if you're shiny with that."
Pickett was uncertain what to do. "Mox, let's get this ship off the ground. Chloe, do what you gotta do to help Wendy," he said, and almost gave Jax an order before deciding not to.

WENDY
Wendy flinched as the shouting sent shooting pains through her head. She was in full agreement that there were way too many people talking. Her system was still in shock, causing her to have no control over the thoughts of all these people invading her mind as well, though they were coming across as garbled noises.
She felt a hand on her shoulder and looked up at Chloe, concentrating on her voice.
"Ignore Captain Shouty-face," "I think you ought to get to the infirmary with me. Just so we can check you out...if you're shiny with that."
"Very," she said, wanting nothing more than some peace and quiet. Wendy carefully stood up and spoke quietly to Jax as she handed him her vid screen. "Jax, please hold on to this for me. It's intel on Tam." She knew Jax would understand the importance by just those last three words. Information on the one person her contacts believed was her last chance of breaking free of the Alliance for good.
Turning back to Chloe, she said, "Lead the way. Slow and easy, if you don't mind. I'm still a little off kilter."

MOX
After entering the code to shut the cargo bay door, he returned to Frank's side and addressed the two men. "Now, now, we're all on the same side here...or not. But at the very least, we're all invested in the same goal of getting off Alliance radar as soon as possible, right?" he offered, looking to Frank for confirmation.
He then turned to the other man. "Sir, I think you should accompany the doc and your friend to the infirmary, and find somewhere to strap in. Frank, you should join me on the bridge. And you might wanna' lead the way in case I forgot how to get there." He went to the base of the stairs and stood there, waiting. "Frank," he added sternly in his well-practiced 'I ain't asking' tone.

Jax just nodded at Mox and gave one last scathing look at Pickett before following after the doctor and Wendy. There was no point in staying there arguing anyway. Pickett wasn't worth wasting his time on anyway and his friend needed him more.

Mox's tone shook Pickett out of his stupor. Too many of his crew had specific tones tailored for him. "Yeah," he said quickly, turning and glancing at Chloe as he did. "You work on her like your own life depended on it." Because if she dies, it might.
