Found some nifty news in my Entertainment Weekly about Heroes. There's two different articles. Yup, I'm still behind on my magazines but catching up, so ya'll may already have heard about this. 1. From Entertainment Weekly, #935, May 25, 2007 - only included info about Heroes [...] Heroes creator Tim Kring will also do some heavy lifting: He'll launch a six-episode spin-off, Heroes: Origins, featuring new characters--one of whom could join the cast in season 3. "It's a stand-alone series with new heroes--and viewers will vote [online for] which hero returns," explains Reilly.[...] ~*~*~*~*~ 2. From Entertainment Weekly, #936, June 1, 2007 - only included info about Heroes spin-off ARE YOU KILLING TV? The way you watch TV is changing--and your favorite shows are hurting. Blame schedule interruptus (digital video recorders and downloading), those annoying hiatuses, and daylight saving time (no, really). Here's what the networks are doing to woo you back.[...]Fortunately for Heroes, the series has a concept that's flexible enough to create new, repeat-killing opportunities. next season, NBC will fill the show's hiatus with Heroes: Origins, a placeholder that's part miniseries, part spin-off. [...] Kring--who will lead a completely separate creative team to produce Origins--says "the whole impetus" for the new series was Heroes' post-hiatus slide. "This type of show has an addictive quality to it, and when you break that addiction, you have interrupted part of the reason of its success," says Kring. "[Fans] just suddenly have other things they are doing--and they know the DVD is coming."[...] (By Jeff Jensen, Additional reporting by Jennifer Armstrong, Lynette Rice, Dan Snierson, and Tanner Stransky)~*~ From a sidebar alongside this article: FOUR THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT 'HEROES: ORIGINS'IT'S A NEW-CENTURY 'TWILIGHT ZONE' Creator Tim Kring cites Rod Serling's anthology series as the model for Origins. Each episode--'"cautionary tales about fantastic characters"--will focus on the origin story of one or two heroes. NO EXPERIENCE NECESSARY Origins won't be dependent on Heroes' mythology. Familiar faces may cameo, and the show could explore fringe characters like Claude the Invisible Man (Christopher Eccleston). Viewers will also get to vote a character onto the flagship show. "We like to think of it as the farm team for Heroes," says Kring. THE PREMIERE WILL EMPHASIZE FUN think Hiro Nakamura, Heroes' gleeful "Powers are fun!" Everyman. Says Kring: "The first episode won't be a particularly dour version of the show." FYI: Origins will start production this fall but probably won't launch until next spring. CELEBRITY CREATORS ARE WELCOME Kring is hoping Heroes' Hollywood fans--writers, directors, and actors--"might be interested in coming to play with us for 10 days of so." Our wish list: Charlie Kaufman, Spike Jonze, and Jack Black.-- JJ
