Eric
The wayward prince swung his leg over the side of the rail and hauled himself onto the deck of the Shooting Star. This was his ship, the pride of his father's navy, though she sailed under a different flag now. She was anchored not far from the shore but in a perfectly secluded spot to keep her safe from unfriendly eyes. The most pressing danger, especially in this land. Eric turned and extending his hand, pulled Grimsby up beside him.
"We lay low for the night then hit Corona in the morning when they open her gates." Eric stated as he turned away but stopped in his tracks as his first mate loudly cleared his throat. A time honored tradition of those who wished to impart their wisdom, wanted or not. "Captain you should leave that to the men, they know you quite well here must I remind you the Royals-" The captain rolled his eyes as he could not contain a long-winded sigh. "Grimsby, I'll just need an extra clever disguise then, I will not be staying behind. Best get used to that my old friend."
He leaned heavily on the rail and glanced out to sea. It's true Eric and his kin were not welcome here but a dark power drove them, something waiting for them they did not want to disappoint. He was not sure entirely why them or even why the girl but he needed to see it done.

The grand looking ship was docked not far from the tower and Rapunzel had very little trouble following the sea-farers back to it, managing to stay just far enough behind to be unnoticed. She stopped a few feet away from the shore, taking cover behind a large tree so she could decide on her next move. As the pirates began to climb into smaller rowboats, meant to take them out to the docked ship, every potential rescue plan she could have come up with was foiled. The chest holding Pascal was already well on its way across the water, with no way to reach it without being seen by at least half a dozen pirates. She would have to get to it on the ship.
That plan held its own troubles. Not only was it dangerous, how would she even get out to the frigate? It was close to shore but still too far to swim. Rapunzel looked back around the tree, scanning the shore for anything that could be of use. The last of the men were climbing up onto the ship, the sandy beach now empty save for one lone empty rowboat. Wait, empty rowboat? The luck that had kept Rapunzel going thus far once again saved the day. The boat was near the edge of the shore closest to the stern of the vessel, mostly obscured by wild plants. She could make her way around and set out around the back. She would just have to figure out a way on board once she was out on the water. With a renewed sense of hope, Rapunzel carefully neared the abandoned boat.
On closer inspection, it didn't seem to be unseaworthy. Empty, yes, but there were no holes or any other visible signs as to why it would have been left behind. Rapunzel put her hands on the side and gave it a shove. The rowboat barely budged. It had to be the sand making the process a bit more difficult than she had anticipated. Using her shoulder and all the strength she had, she pushed again. This time the boat seemed to move easily towards the water. Rapunzel straightened up with a grin. She did it! Her grin quickly faded when she saw that it wasn't just her own will that had accomplished the task. A shadow fell over her face and she backed up, only to find herself hitting the broad chest of a very large man.
"Well, hello there. We'll be glad to give you a ride on to our ship. I think it's about time you tell the Captain just why you've been following us." Rapunzel winced as the large pirate grasped her shoulders and tossed her into the rowboat, two others already joining her. It looked like her luck had run out.

The captain could not stop pacing back and forth. He saw the last of the long boats making its final approach and he turned and surveyed the situation. Everything had been loaded on-board and he rested his hand on the precious chest. Would its contents be enough he thought? Where was the girl? It was a very long shot they would find her in the capital. If they did how could they make off with her? He didn't know much about her but from what the Dark One had said, if she was there it was likely the Royals knew about her powers too. She would be well guarded.
The men didn't need to know he was making this up as he went so far. It comforted him though that if there was one thing he was good at it was dealing with things as they came. He preferred it that way, plans have a nasty habit of falling apart. Though his deal had gotten him in way over his head this time, they would manage he knew. Somehow they had too. What would happen to his father if they failed? He didn't want to think about that yet and he heard the men coming up from the last boat. He withdrew his hand from the lid and walked quickly to the rail. Stepping up he leaned over the side and dropped his arm to help them up. His mouth opened in surprise. Looking up at him was not one of his crew at all but a pair of green eyes belonging to a beautiful young woman. "Captain we brought you a surprise." exclaimed the burly man climbing up behind her.

Rapunzel glared up at the owner of the outstretched hand. The captain, the man she had seen at the tower, stared back at her. She ignored the hand, not moving an inch from the boat. She would not make this easy on them.
"You'll move lassie or you'll be sent right to Davy Jones' locker." The lanky pirate behind her growled, jabbing his corkscrew bladed sword down towards the water. Rapunzel crossed her arms over her chest, forcing herself to look calm despite the terror that kept her heart and mind racing. Before the lanky pirate could make good on his threat, the largest pirate made the decision for her, grabbing her around the waist and lifting her over the rail as if she were nothing more than a rag doll. Rapunzel barely had a moment to struggle, knowing that once she was up in his arms any flailing movement would send her falling to her death in the shallow water below. Once she was on the deck though, face to face with the pirate captain, her stubborn demeanor returned as she cooly and stealthily took stock of her new surroundings.
"I assume that you all have good reason to be taking me captive like this? I was just enjoying a quiet walk through the woods when these... these ruffians came upon me and insisted on taking me here." Rapunzel knew that she had a terrible poker face. It was one of Eugene's favorite things to tease her about- that he could always tell when she was up to something just because of the way her eyes told a different story. She prayed that it was only because Eugene knew her so well and that this captain wouldn't pick up on her tells.

With his attempt to help rebuffed the man from below, Rand, hoisted the young lass up onto the deck. Eric now stood staring her in the face as she squared her shoulders and he saw her stubbornness set back in. "I promise you no one will harm you miss" he waved Rand off as he came aboard.
"I assume that you all have good reason to be taking me captive like this? I was just enjoying a quiet walk through the woods when these... these ruffians came upon me and insisted on taking me here."
"I caught her following us." Rand said as he merely shrugged and walked away. Eric turned his attention back to their guest. "Now that wouldn't be true, would it? I can't imagine you would go looking for trouble following a group of... ruffians such as ourselves?" he said as he cocked his head slightly to one side.

"Now that wouldn't be true, would it? I can't imagine you would go looking for trouble following a group of... ruffians such as ourselves?"
Shooting a look after the retreating pirate, Rapunzel turned back to the captain. The tone of his voice told her that she had been caught and no amount of denying it would get her off the hook. So she decided to try a different approach. Softening her voice and relaxing her body language, she replied, "You know it is...I was truly in the forest looking for the fabled lost tower with a little friend of mine. After hours of searching, I finally found it but apparently so had you and your crew. You startled me. I didn't expect anyone to be there and I hid but my friend became trapped in one of the trunks that you carried away." It was mostly the truth, with just enough vagueness thrown in there to keep suspicion off of her. "So you see, I was following you but only because I wanted to rescue him. He is very dear to me..." She trailed off, letting her words sink in for a few moments before adding, "I'm sorry I called you ruffians. I'm sure you're really very nice...pirates. If you return my friend to me, I'll just take my leave and no one will ever know that you were here."

The captain took a moment to let her words sink in. "A little friend you say..." Eric walked over and cracked the lid to the chest. Out skurried a small reptile of some kind. It crossed the deck and climbed up onto the woman's shoulder. He watched this out of the corner of his eye and then let the chest slam shut. "Well now, since we cleared up that little oddity... Perhaps you could tell me why a young lass would be out searching for that tower all by herself?" He turned back to face her. "And I don't believe I caught your name."

"A little friend you say..."
"Oh Pascal!" Rapunzel cried as the little chameleon settled back on her shoulder. Right where he belonged. But the little green reptile, though obviously glad to see her, still hung his head a bit in shame knowing what this daring rescue may have cost his friend. "It was worth it," she whispered to him, gently stroking his head.
"Well now, since we cleared up that little oddity... Perhaps you could tell me why a young lass would be out searching for that tower all by herself?" "And I don't believe I caught your name."
Rapunzel looked back up as the captain addressed her. Her name...there was no way she could give him her real name. Not when she was the one that they were looking for. A vision of the wildflowers, long forgotten back at the tower, sprang to mind and Rapunzel stammered out the first thing she could think of, "L-Lily. My name is Lily. Like the flower." Her arm dropped from Pascal back down to her side. "And I wasn't all alone. I had Pascal to keep me company."

He was getting the feeling she was not being entirely honest with him. "Well miss Lily I must apologize in advance, in response to the later half of your request. We will not keep you any longer than our need demands us." Unfortunately for her, he could not risk releasing her just yet. "But you must remain our guest a little while longer. We can not have word getting out about us while we remain in your land."
He meant to leave but stopped. "If you would do me the pleasure of joining me for dinner this evening my cabin is yours my lady." He bowed low but straightened and fixed her with a sincere expression. "You have nothing to fear, afterwords I shall leave you to your privacy." He lead her inside then took his leave briefly to stow the chest and make up a space for himself below deck. He needed a moment to check the contents...

Without any other choice, Rapunzel numbly followed the captain into his cabin. Tears threatened to blur her vision but she valiantly pushed them back. Getting emotional would no sooner get her off this ship than she would sprout wings and fly away. But once the captain had left to attend to other matters, she began to pace the room and speak as much the Pascal as to herself. "Oh no. This is bad. This is really really bad. Pascal, we need to get out of here."
The green chameleon nudged his head against her cheek, offering what comfort he could. It was much appreciated and Rapunzel stopped suddenly, almost sending the little guy flying off her shoulder. "Alright. I have to think. What would Eugene do? If this was one of Flynn Rider's heists and he had to escape, what would he do?" She looked around the cabin. There wasn't much, it was fairly simple. A bed, a table, a wardrobe... Her eyes fell on a large window port. Just large enough for her to fit through. "First, check the windows." One look outside told her that it was only a viable option if she wished to plunge to her death. The fall was steep. "Okay not the window."
What would he look for next? "Door. Always a good option." Rapunzel cracked the door open a bit. Always a good option, except when it's being guarded by big, mean looking pirate. "Ah, just, uh...trying to get some air in here. Sorry." Swiftly she pulled the door shut. What next? She swept her eyes around the room, looking for just the right thing. There had to be a way. There was always a way. And there it was. A medium sized square in the ceiling that looked different from the rest. But too high for her to reach. Rapunzel pushed the room's round table underneath and clambered on top. As she pressed her hand against the square, it began to raise and let in glorious sunlight. A skylight! If it led to an upper level of the stern, she could climb up and then shimmy down a rope to the water below. There had been plenty laying on the upper deck. No one would know she was gone until it was too late.
Eagerly, Rapunzel stuck her arms up through the now open square and began to lift herself up.

Rand stood by the helm leaning against the side with the ocean at his back. Just as the captain had expected the hatch from his quarters creaked open and he saw a pair of hands crasp the edge of the lip. "Guess you could use a hand after all. Let's go lass." He knelt down and gently lifted her up on the deck beside him.
Eric walked up the steps in front of them. "You didn't give me the chance to offer you a drink at least." Eric lead her down below again. "It might come as a shock but we're not bad men, Lily. Though I don't expect you to take my word for it I hope you will come to believe that." The captain nodded at the man by the door. He left to fetch some food. Eric fixed the table and chairs and not long after the refreshments where delivered. Once he set a plate in front of her he went on. "If I may, I can't help but wonder... What was in the tower that would have been of use to you? What stories brought you there?"

No. No no no. Rapunzel felt a single tear glide down her cheek. She needed to get home. Her parents would be sick with worry. Eugene would come looking for her, he would- The thought chilled Rapunzel to the bone. Eugene would come looking and he would find her. She knew he would. Her and a ship full of pirates. Though they were being cordial now, she wasn't perceived as much of a threat. What would they do to him? If he were hurt...they had been through that once. What if this time she couldn't save him?
"It might come as a shock but we're not bad men, Lily. Though I don't expect you to take my word for it I hope you will come to believe that." "If I may, I can't help but wonder... What was in the tower that would have been of use to you? What stories brought you there?"
Rapunzel didn't touch her food. She merely leaned against the back of her chair, hands in her lap and mumbled a quiet response. "Stories that have been passed throughout the village. About a mysterious tower in the forest. I was just...just curious." Her eyes raised to his, a pleading look in them. "You don't understand. There are people waiting for me. My family...my husband, he will come looking for me. He'll already be looking for me."

"Stories that have been passed throughout the village. About a mysterious tower in the forest. I was just...just curious."
Her eyes raised to his, a pleading look in them. It took Eric aback. It cut him though he did not let it show on his face. He didn't want to be in this position if she was who he thought she was...
"You don't understand. There are people waiting for me. My family...my husband, he will come looking for me. He'll already be looking for me."
The captain wasn't sure who might be looking for her or if he should be worried but regardless this was likely to force his hand. He had one thing he needed to ask... "This is a regrettable situation to be sure... I hope it will all be over soon, for all of us." Eric thought he might get what he needed if he put it as nonchalantly as possible. "Please have something, it would break my heart if you went hungry, my dear... Tell me, do all young women in your land wear your hair so short? It is an odd fashion. Then again I may be out of touch, it's been quite some time since I've been in these parts." he lied. He was sure if she knew who he truly was she would be somewhat less inclined to offer him any help at all. It didn't matter what her status was, she would be privy to his family's reputation. That is unless she had been living locked away from the world her whole life, he mused...

"Please have something, it would break my heart if you went hungry, my dear..."
Despite the plea, Rapunzel pushed her plate away. Her stomach was twisted into so many knots that she couldn't have consumed it if she had wanted to. And she didn't want to.
"Tell me, do all young women in your land wear your hair so short? It is an odd fashion. Then again I may be out of touch, it's been quite some time since I've been in these parts."
Absently, her fingers reached up to the short ends of her brunette hair. It still felt strange to her and occasionally she found herself forgetting that she no longer had the yards and yards of sunny yellow hair. But at the mention, she suddenly became very aware of that fact...and that this pirate captain must have seen something in the tower that would give him cause to believe that he was no longer looking for a young woman with yards of sunny, magical hair.
"Lice. T-there was a terrible outbreak of it in the village just last year. I cut it short to make it easier to treat," she responded quickly, "Unfortunately it's growing back a bit more slowly than I'd like."

Eric raised his eyebrows, starting to become slightly agitated, he no longer cared for that little subtlety. "What village do you come from, wearing clothes as fine as yours, that would be vulnerable to such a terrible outbreak of Lice?" He was prepared to push her, he knew she was hiding something. He did make sure to keep his tone non-threatening. "I can sense you know a great deal more than you are telling me. If you come clean we can move past all this, I only need information dear Lily. And perhaps a little help wouldn't go amiss." At this point he knew she would not admit to being the maiden he sought but if he downplayed his need perhaps she wouldn't be afraid to come forward.

"What village do you come from, wearing clothes as fine as yours, that would be vulnerable to such a terrible outbreak of Lice?"
It seemed that she was beginning to rattle him but that question proved to her that he was as determined to find out her secret as she was to keep it. She leveled a serious look at him. "Infected blankets. At least that I what I have heard. There was a trade of supplies with a new ally and somehow their shipment had been contaminated with the little buggers."
"I can sense you know a great deal more than you are telling me. If you come clean we can move past all this, I only need information dear Lily. And perhaps a little help wouldn't go amiss."
"I'm sorry that I can't help you, Captain. But I don't know what you want from me. And I'm sure that I'd have no information that would be of use to you." Once again, she crossed her arms over her chest. "I'm just a simple village girl. Does my family do well for themselves? Yes. And I am fortunate to have some lovely things. But that does not mean that I would know more than someone living in the streets."

"Infected blankets." she said as she continued to weave her tale.
The captain had been leaning forward and when he realized she was going to keep up the charade he sat back in his chair and swiped his hand off the table as if pushing aside a layer of dust.
"I'm sorry that I can't help you, Captain."
He turned his head to the side and stared off into space as she continued, only half listening. When he heard her silence Eric turned his eyes back towards her without moving his head. He gave her a moment to decipher that look as she saw fit. "This is now a dangerous game we play miss." He gave that statement just the right amount of intensity and a little resignation. "You know who was in that tower, if word reached me in a far off land then it surely was known to you. The maiden who can heal any wound. Even those of time itself." Perhaps she would respond to a heartfelt plea... "You owe me nothing lass that I know... I mean her no harm, but this maiden could save the life of one I love. I need to speak with her." That was the grim truth he had been avoiding. If somewhat skewed. He turned his head back towards her so she could see his full expression. There could be no doubt anymore as to what he was insinuating.

Rapunzel looked away, his words hitting her like a heavy stone. The desperation was clear in his voice now, all facade of coolness gone from both parties. She knew that it was over and that she had lost. But if a hurt loved one was what he wanted her for, unfortunately he had lost as well. And though he was holding her there against her will, though he was a pirate...her heart truly hurt for what she had to tell him. Silence reigned over the table for several more moments until Rapunzel softly said, "She can't. I'm so sorry, but she can't save anyone now."
Sincerity filled her voice and she placed her hands palms down on the table. "The maiden's hair was cut in that tower. It turned brown...those who abused it to turn back the clocks became old and withered and turned into dust. The magic was lost and she doesn't know how to bring it back. Or if it even can be." Finally she met his gaze again, almost afraid of what she'd find there. But despite that, her words were matter of fact. "You found the hair. You know that I speak the truth."

Eric felt the breath leave his lungs. He had planned on resistance but he had not expected to hear those words from her mouth.
"You found the hair. You know that I speak the truth."
This was what he was afraid of when he had looked into that chest. He glanced up and she stared back into his eyes. He could not find the words he needed. Finally he spoke softly, "How can you be sure? Truly your power was tied to your hair? But some yet remains... And the chest..." The last part he spoke almost to himself. He was desperate to cling to anything that might let hope survive the night. The sun hung low in the sky after their talk, just like his spirits.

"How can you be sure? Truly your power was tied to your hair? But some yet remains... And the chest..."
An irrational guilt rose in Rapunzel's chest at the obvious distress of the Captain. From his reaction, whoever it was must have been very important to him. She bit her lip, debating whether she should tell the small amount of information she yet held back. She no longer wanted to lie to him. Whatever she could do to help, she wanted to do. But false hope could be more harmful than no hope at all. Rapunzel didn't want to cause anyone the pain of that. Still, the despair on his face encouraged her to continue her story.
"Something did happen. Just after the hair was cut. My husband was mortally wounded. He cut my hair to protect me and all I could do was sit there and watch him..." Rapunzel trailed off, getting lost in the emotion of that moment that was still very fresh with her even after so long. "In his final moments, I cried over him and sang the healing incantation. And it worked. Bright yellow strands of light, like long hair, surrounded us and my Eugene came back to me. But that was the last time. I've tried but no amount of singing and no amount of tears has been able to do what my hair used to." She bit her lip and reached out to take the Captain's hand, any fear of him long dispelled. "I will try again. I'll do whatever I can to help you. But you need to let me send word to my parents and to Eugene that I am alright and will return to them when I can."

"It would be unjust of me to deny you that request especially after what you are willing to do for a man you do not even know." Eric felt a flutter of hope in his heart and at the same time he felt terrible about what really awaited them at journey's end. He could not bring himself to tell her that part. This was so much easier when he did not know her. She truly was saving his father's life though, who would otherwise be forfeit. He needed to remember that. This was how it needed to be... He was sure... "Do you have someone you trust to take the message to your loved ones? We can deliver it to them in person so they can see you are safe. If we took it directly, I'm sure things would not go so smoothly."

Rapunzel's face broke into a wide grin and she jumped up from the table to throw her arms around the man. "Oh thank you! I was really beginning to worry about them. Eugene has a way of running headfirst into situations and getting himself into trouble...something we have in common I guess!" She laughed brightly, knowing exactly that it was something that had brought them together to begin with. "And my mother and father must be half out of their minds by now. When your daughter is abducted and locked away in a tower for eighteen years, it makes you a little over protective."
"Do you have someone you trust to take the message to your loved ones? We can deliver it to them in person so they can see you are safe. If we took it directly, I'm sure things would not go so smoothly."
"No, they definitely wouldn't." Rapunzel replied, her face scrunching up a little as she thought. "The Snuggly Duckling! It's a tavern not too far from here. I can send word with one of my friends there."

When she jumped up and gave him a hug Eric froze before gently taking her by the shoulders and moving her to arms length. Under the guise of showing her his smile of course. He hated himself for that act of letting this continue but he couldn't make himself do anything else. Her idea plucked him out of his self loathing.
"The Snuggly Duckling! It's a tavern not too far from here. I can send word with one of my friends there."
"Consider it done! We'll pay your friends a visit at first light and then with your blessing, set sail. Everything you may need will be provided for, Lily. I promise you that." It wouldn't be the last time but he thought it best to not mention their port of call either... He felt so different all of a sudden... Like he was trapped inside watching someone else make decisions with his words and actions. It was a powerless feeling. It was already far to late to change course now... "By the way, my name is Eric."

"By the way, my name is Eric."
"It's nice to officially meet you, Eric. Oh, uh..." An embarrassed expression passed over Rapunzel's face, "I'm sorry, I tried to deceive you earlier. I've had a few experiences with the wrong kind of people so when I realized that you were looking for the girl with the magic hair, I got a little nervous. It seems silly now because you're not really that terrifying pirate that I thought you were and you're actually very nice so-" She was rambling. Mother Gothel always hated it when when rambled. "My real name is Rapunzel." She finished, getting to the point.

Out there... I imagine that's where one could find out who they truly were. That's freedom.

You're actually very nice, she said... She was going to be the death of him. Eric was going to have to get used to this bubbly painfully optimistic attitude quickly so it would not get the jump on him at every turn. It was going to be a long voyage... "I'm glad we have that all sorted out lass... I'm going to take my leave now. Get some rest, Rapunzel."

"Goodnight Eric! And don't worry. These things have a way of working out." With a last positive smile, she settled down on the bed. She knew that she was doing the right thing. Helping Eric was important. But looking out the window at the night sky, she felt a distinct pang in her heart because for the first time since she had returned there, home felt very far away.

**Later the next day**
The trip to the Snuggly Duckling was successful and blessedly unadventurous. Eric now had the men scrambling to their stations having prepped the ship for the high sea's. The ports where secured and the canvas unfurled at full sail. The rigging strained as the wind began to push the ship forward. The weather was perfect today Eric thought as he watched the ship accelerate out of the inlet and the shore began to shrink. With everything going as planned now, he turned the helm over to Rand and walked to the gun deck and watched the waves pass by. He wasn't sure how much time had fled but it did seem to get away from him sometimes when he enjoyed the sights like this. He loved the sea, he always had. He shook the feeling for a moment and scanned the deck looking for Rapunzel. He wanted to make sure she was doing okay.

Rapunzel stood at the rail of the stern, watching her home get smaller and smaller as the ship cut across the water. They were barely at sea and already her stomach was churning. It was strange and unexpected. She had never shown signs of sea sickness before- well at least she hadn't the few times that she had been on the water. Hopefully it was just a passing thing. It would be an awfully long journey if she spent the entirety of it with her head over the railing and she already missed Eugene terribly. They had not been separated this long since that fateful day that he climbed through her tower window and she hit him with her frying pan.
Trying to cheer herself, she turned around and looked back over the ship. Seeing Eric, she waved at him. "Hello, Captain." she greeted, smile on her face.

Eric
"Hello, Captain." she greeted, smile on her face.
He changed his course to walk up beside Rapunzel and leaned against the rail. "Good morning my dear. I hope it finds you in good form," he gave her a sideways glance. She looked a bit uneasy, perhaps with the motion of the ship but it didn't come close to overpowering that cheer that was present in her voice as she spoke. Or dim her glow. He really admired her. She was a kind soul and that kind of spirit needed to be kindled. It was becoming rare indeed. "You know what I like to do to keep my mind occupied on these trips? I focus on a point on the horizon, once you have your legs the motion isn't as jarring. For me at least," he hoped he was being helpful. "Sometimes you spy a strip of land and I like to imagine what adventures may lie there, or who might call it home. And sometimes..." He stopped as he actually saw something small but unmistakable, sails...
