Disney's new streaming service to feature Loki and Scarlet Witch shows Anthony Breznican
September 18, 2018 at 10:12 PM EDT
Disney’s new streaming video service needs some heroes, but it’s turning to some former Marvel villains who have been drawn to the light.
Tom Hiddleston’s Loki and Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch could each get their own limited series on the platform, which is expected to launch in late 2019, sources confirm to EW.
That would brings significant Marvel firepower to the Disney service, which will also feature a Star Wars series run by Iron Man and The Jungle Book filmmaker Jon Favreau.
Disney will need powerhouses like that to draw new viewers, especially in a marketplace already crowded by Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, and other streaming services.
Original programing that harks back to beloved franchises or characters has proven to be key to luring subscribers.
CBS All Access turned to Star Trek to attract viewers — beginning with the current Discovery and a planned Jean-Luc Picard series with Patrick Stewart returning to his Next Generation role. The DC Universe app, meanwhile, is launching with a gritty new take on Titans.
No writers or directors have yet been attached to the Loki or Scarlet Witch shows, but Variety’s Justin Kroll, who broke the news, reports that Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige, the driving force between the interlocked Marvel Cinematic Universe, would have a hand in developing the programs.
ABC already has Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., which spun off Clark Gregg’s Agent Coulson from the films. (Gregg returns to the big screen with a 1990s version of his character in next year’s Captain Marvel.) And Netflix licensed Marvel characters for its Defenders universe, with Luke Cage, Daredevil, Iron Fist, Jessica Jones, and The Punisher.
While those shows have included a few scattered nods to the MCU, there has been relatively little crossover. Viewers could expect much more interconnection with Hiddleston and Olsen returning as their fan-favorite characters, who each started out on the side of evil, only to be tempted toward decency and goodness as their stories unfolded.
It’s unclear when the shows might be set in each character’s timeline, but the smart guess is the shows would be prequels of sorts (if only because — SPOILER WARNING — we saw both their lives end in Avengers: Infinity War).
Of course, things could always change when next spring’s untitled Infinity War sequel hits.
At least, they better. In any case, both will get a new life when the Disney streaming service launches.

Yah, that’s what it’s showing currently. I was bummed about that! But then, these are meant to be more like epic mini series rather than full on shows.

EPISODE 1 EASTER EGGS
I am LOVING this show already! I've always loved timey-wimey stuff, so I'm really enjoying this! Also love learning about a new aspect of Marvel; the TVA! The easter egg vid was really helpful! The marvelous (pun intended) writers of the MCU pack in so freakin' much into everything they create that it's just impossible to catch it all and these Screen Crush vids do an amazing job and finding so many things! Not really spoilery, to be honest. They do bring up some stuff from comics but this ep, at least, was just combing over the first ep and finding so many connections.
The reveal at the end that the variant they're chasing is Loki is brilliant! What better person to hunt own a Loki than another Loki? The dude it just too crafty.
Keeping this one short as I've already watched the second ep and can't remember where one ep ended and the other ended. Plus, I'm tired from work, lol!

EPISODE 2 EASTER EGGS
Such a great episode! Brilliant writing and brilliant idea to have the Variant Loki hiding in apocalypse events. Was totally expecting this Loki they've been chasing to be a female. Our Loki's profile in the first ep, where his sex was stated as "Fluid" already hinted at it and that little show of the different Loki variants shows that Loki can be any type of being, so why not any sex?
I can't wait to find out what the heck Lady Loki has up her sleeve! What did all those charges going off do? With all those branches going off the Sacred Timeline, it looks like Lady Loki is creating the Multiverse! That'll lead perfectly into Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness and Spider-Man: No Way Home with rumors of Spideys and other characters from other universes showing up in it.
I'm so excited for the next ep!

EPISODE 3 EASTER EGGS
Well crap. How are they gonna get out of this? Who's gonna step in and help Loki and Silvi? I'm guessing Mobius.
Speaking of, big reveal that Mobius and the others working at the TVA were NOT created by the Timekeepers just to be agents. If Silvi isn't lying (I don't think she is, about this, at least), then all those agents, including Mobius, are all Variants who've had their minds wiped. Definitely makes me question if these Timekeepers are good guys or bad guys. I mean, they could be good guys who feel they have to sacrifice Variants to help them keep the Sacred Timeline on its track, or they could be bad guys who have picked a timeline that best benefits themselves and mind wiped an army for themselves to keep it going smoothly.
Either way, we've got that interesting discussion of, just because you CAN do something that might benefit people as a whole, do you really have the right to take away people's free will? Like with Thanos wiping out half the population in order to save planets and their people from destroying themselves to extinction.
Alrighty, keeping this short as it seems I'm the only one reviewing so far and also, it's been almost a week since I'd rewatched this ep!

I'm here, too, I promise! I loved episode 3, with all the interplay between Loki and Sylvie, Loki's memories of Frigga, Loki singing drunkenly on a train (I also can't sit backward on a train), the futile attempt to get on the Ark. I definitely did wonder how they were going to get out of that. And yeah, it is pretty narcissistic to fall in love with a variant of yourself, but I still thought it was sweet. I don't want Loki to be alone. I don't want Sylvie to be alone, either. This poor little girl is just sitting there playing with a dragon and a Valkyrie, and the TVA breaks in and takes her away from her life and her family -- it's awful! But that did explain Ravonna's interest in this case, and that she's evil. Definitely wasn't expecting that reveal, or that Sylvie would help Hunter B-15 remember her old life, or that they would actually "purge" Mobius and then Loki (WTF?!). But it's okay because they just got teleported to some apocalyptic universe that's filled with Loki's, even an alligator one. This show has kept me guessing, for sure. I have absolutely no clue who or what is actually running the TVA.

EPISODE 4 EASTER EGGS
EPISODE 5 EASTER EGGS
EPISODE 6 EASTER EGGS
I didn't get around to reviewing the last four eps and it feels like it's been such a long time since I've watched, so I'll probably keep this short. I really enjoyed this series! I like that we got to meet the character that will probably be the next big MCU villain. I love how a Loki variant was responsible for creating the multiverse. I really loved the place at the end of time. The cinematography was beautiful! I was really bummed that Mobius got memory wiped and that we didn't get to see him get that memory back. But, I was less bummed when I learned that... LOKI'S BEEN RENEWED FOR SEASON 2!!! ETA is 2022. I'm really looking forward to more Loki variants fun and more Mobius!
